AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric Pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temPerature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. Methods Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. Terminology and Basic Specifications Minerals and closely allied natural substances that are used for personal adornment, as raw stock for the fashioning of ornamental objects, or for other decorative purposes can be referred to collectively as gem materials. Industrial gem materials are those employed directly in various areas of industry. Substances that are manufactured for gem or industrial uses are termed synthetic gem materials; most of these correspond in composition and crystal structure to certain minerals found in nature. Imitation materials are those whose use is based upon their resemblance to substances of different composition and greater value. Gem stone is a designation commonly restricted to those materials suitable for personal adornment, and the complementary term ornamental stone is applied to the remaining materials not used industrially. This distinction is arbitrary and somewhat inconstant, owing to numerous geographic differences and historical shifts in end uses. Further, there is a complete gradation between the category of ornamental stones and that of dimension stone. Although many building and monumental stones are undeniably ornamental in their uses, treatment of such material is beyond the scope of this chapter. Substances that lose their identity in use are excluded from the gem category. Thus a transparent crystal of beryl would not be classed as a gem stone if it were treated as a source of beryllium metal. The adjectives precious and semiprecious have been employed as a means of distinguishing different gem materials on the basis of their recognized value. Diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire consistently have been regarded as precious stones, and in cut form they commonly are referred to as the noble gems. Opal, pearl, turquois, and chrysoberyl also have been classed as precious at various times. In recent years, however, it has been increasingly recognized that no satisfactory distinction can be based upon assessed value or any group of intrinsic properties, and at the present time all gem stones normally are referred to as precious. Indeed, the tendency is to extend this term to include many of the so-called ornamental stones, and the designation semiprecious has been essentially discontinued. Unlike most mineral commodities of economic value, gem materials are little altered in processing for end uses. Some stones are used in essentially their natural form, and most are reshaped and polished without significant changes in their fundamental properties. Thus the preparation of gem and ornamental stones is intended chiefly to emphasize or enhance desirable characteristics that are present initially. The worth of most synthetic gem stones is founded upon the identity between their major properties and the natural characteristics of the corresponding minerals, just as the pleasing qualities of imitation stones depend upon how well certain of their properties simulate those of more valuable substances. The most important specifications of gem materials represent four basic factors: beauty, durability, rarity, and portability. Beauty, whether expressed as splendor, "purity," attractiveness, or in some other way, is mainly a function of personal response to optical properties such as color, transparency, indices of refraction, and dispersion. This paper describes the evolution of transportation at an important mining property, beginning at a time when the railhead was 400 mi. distant, and tracing the steps leading to the development of what is probably the heaviest ore train ever operated in underground mine service over narrow-gage tracks, a 300-ton ore train on a 20-in. track, at working costs closely approximating those obtained on systems involving much greater capital expenditure. Useful where geological and financial considerations render inadvisable the excavation and maintenance of large tunnels and heavier rolling stock. THE problem of transportation in the Clifton-Morenci district of Arizona has been one of peculiar difficulty and consequently has been an important factor in the cost of mining and treating the ores produced. From the crude beginning made over 50 years ago, many changes have been necessary to keep pace with the increased output of copper. A heavy-duty haulage system has developed on the original 20-in. track gage to meet the existent metal-mine conditions.

TEN years ago a broad knowledge of aerial mapping, coupled with a smattering of geology, qualified one to speak on the subject of the appli-cation of aerial mapping to geology. Today, with aerial maps a common tool in the hands of expert geologists on every continent throughout the world, it would be nothing short of presumptuous for the author of this paper, who is not a geologist, to give any geological statements on his own authority. Relatively, today we are only purveyors of general geological gossip, with a definite case here and there by way of illustration. But we can present a story of the really marvellous strides that have been made in the evolution of aerial mapping, built around a skeleton of geological tidbits, from which some useful conclusions may be drawn. The average geologist goes about reading his aerial maps much as one would approach the problem of deciphering a cryptogram. To begin with, typical key expressions appear in recurring sequences and under certain conditions. If once the meaning of these isolated bits of infor-mation can be ascertained, the message begins to take meaning. In a similar fashion, the geologist works out his key from aerial maps of territory with which he has some familiarity. He learns that a certain type of thin, white line may mean a vein of quartz. He sees that a certain change in the photographic tone of vegetation on the ground reflects two kinds of soils on opposite sides of, a contact. He sees that a certain type of alignment of topographical features often means a fault. He learns that by the erosion pattern .he can frequently distinguish soft formations from harder ones. And so, bit by bit, he ties together the information of the picture with his experience on the ground until he develops a reasonably creditable capacity of interpretation. Through the complete gamut of surface conditions, ranging all the way from flat, arid, exposed desert terrain to dense jungle, or rugged mountains, the evidence from which the geologist must make his inter-pretation varies with bewildering profusion. The quality of photographs which are obtainable may range from perfect pictures in the desert to almost useless smudges in the steaming jungles. One thing he has learned with certainty-the airplane carrying its mapping camera is a superb reconnaissance tool, only awaiting his ingenuity in correlating the pictures with the ground to simplify most exploratory problems.

$1. Introduction.—Any given piece of metal is made up of a very great number of grains, usually microscopic, each of which is a perfect crystal save only in outward form, with cleavage planes of low cohesion, geometrically arranged quite as in fie familiar non-metallic crystals. The plastic deformation of such a mass occurs chiefly through the slipping of the crystalline blocks of which each grain is composed along these cleavage planes, causing steps called slip bands to form on a previously polished surface. In this slip, the metal immediately adjoining each of the cleavage planes along which the slip takes place is thought to pass extremely rapidly through a very mobile state into the amorphous state, in which it is harder than the remaining still crystalline metal between the amorphous layers thus formed along the slip planes. Whether the slip planes below the surface in ferrite can be detected by cutting, polishing, and etching sections is in dispute; but if this detection is possible at all, it is usually made impossible by heating the metal even gently. In short, the change along the slip planes does not persist through heating, and it is thought not to persist through time even at the room temperature, nearly all the amorphous metal recrystallizing. The network in Fig. 22 and the parallel N.-70-E. lines in Fig. 21 are slip bands in copper. When plastically deformed metal is heated, certain parts of certain grains may twin, that is, their component crystalline units may rotate into a position, or more exactly into an orientation, symmetrical with the initial orientation and hence with that of the remainder of that grain. As seen in a microsection of a metal the twinned areas usually have parallel sides. The existence of twinning is recognized in metallic sections either by the presence of such parallel-sided areas differing in brightness from the adjoining metal, especially when seen under oblique light after etching, or more surely by the zigzagging of the slip bands which form when twinned metal is itself deformed again. Explanations bused on theory and laboratory tests tire offered for certain unusual features of SP logs which may befog their interpretation, namely the "sawtooth" SP and the reduction or increase of SP with time. The sawtooth SP is frequently seen in SP recordings of thick, very permeable watcr. sands of the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Using SP data from a resistor network analog, this anomaly is explained on the basis of a thin shale streak within the sand. under which the invading filtrate accumulates by gravity segregcitiorr. The electromotive force then appearing across the shale streak gives rise to the anomalous SP. Reduction of the SP on successive logging runs Ira often been observed in very permeable sands when as indicated by the resistivity curves, the invasion depth has been reduced to practically zero. Laboratory results verify that this phenomenon may be due, to the presence of air electromotive force, across the mod rake when the fluids on either side differ in activity. Also, there is, in some cases; an increase of SP deflection on successive logging runs, because the emf initially present across the mud cake disappears as the somewhat saline water just behind the mud cake is progressively flushed out by the invading filtrate.. Field example and laboratory data are presented. I N T R ODUCT1ON Some unusual features are frequently observed on certain SP logs which make interpretation difficult. The purpose of this paper is to offer explanations of several cases of interest. All of these arc related to the conditions of invasion. The cases to be discussed are as follows. 1. The sawtooth SP anomaly which is frequently seen within the thick, highly permeable saltwater sands of the Louisiuana Gulf Coast 1. Reduction of the SP deflection from the usual sand line in very permeable sections when the depth of invasion is practically nil. As will be explained, such a reduction is attributable to a membrane electromotive force across the mud cake. 3. An increase of the SP with time just after the iormation is drilled as a result of progressive flushing of the invaded zone. FUNDAMENTALS OF SP PHENOMENA An explanation of SP phenomena must begin with the following basic ideas. 1. The SP log derives its character from ohmic potential differences in the hole produced by currents flowing through the mud.' These currents are driven by electromotive forces which are primarily electrochemical in origin. Other possible types of SP-producing electromotive forces may be disregarded for the purposes of this paper. 2. The electrochemical emf's associated with permeable formations are now understood to consist of liquid-junction emf's and membrane emf's.',' As schematically shown by thc battery symbols in Fig. 1, the liquid-junction emf, E,,,, exists at the contact between waters of different chemical activities, a,,,, (mud filtrate) and tr,,. (formation water); the shale membrane emf, lS.sn. exists across the adjacent shales whcn they separate waters of different activities. The emf's just cited are additivc in producing SP currents (arrowed circles of Fig. I). Thus, neglecting for the moment any possible membrane emf across thc mud cake, the total electrochemical emf, E,, will be given by their sum, where K,., -! K,q,, = 12 + 59, or 71 at 75 °F. In the log interpretations the SP of a thick sand (i.e.. the static SP) is generally related to the activities of the filtrate and formation water through Eq. 1. by setting the static SP equal to - E,.

Prior to 1915, numerous attempts were made to treat tin concentrates in the United States, but for various reasons they were unsuccessful. Tin ore is said to have been found in nearly every state, but none of the deposits has proved to be of commercial importance. An annual output of a few hundred tons in Alaska is the only domestic production; hence any considerable production of tin in the United States must be from foreign ores. The most promising occurrence of tin was found in the Black Hills, S. Dak.; in the early development stage, it was called the Cornwall of America. Associated with the tin is tungsten The story is told that an exceedingly fine specimen of the Black Hills ore was sent to England to encourage stock promotion; the desired effect was produced until a skeptic chipped off a small piece, which the analysis showed to be wolframite. First Attempts at Smelting One of the first promising attempts at tin smelting in the United States was made by R. T. White at Bayonne, N. J., in 1903. Mr. White, after spending some time in England studying the methods of tin smelting, organized a company called the International Tin Co., and erected a plant to treat tin concentrates from the Straits of Malacca. About the time the plant was completed, the English Government placed an export duty of 40 per cent. ad valorem on tin concentrates exported to other than British smelters, which duty made it impossible to operate this plant so the enterprise was abandoned, As this export duty is still effective, the only source of tin-ore supply for the United States is the Bolivian concentrates. Residual oil in watered-out reservoirs is a tremendous reserve which has been unrecoverable by established production methods. A study of the new recovery methods indicated that the forward combustion urocess might- recover oil from such reservoirs; however, no thermal recovery operating experience in a watered-out system was available. The Delaware-Childers pilot thermal test was undertaken to test the feasibility of thermal recovery in this watered-out reservoir. The pilot test consisted of a 2.22-acre, inverted five-spot in the 600-ft deep Bartlesville sand. The reservoir in the pilot area had a porosity of 20.6 per cent, a permeability of 118 md and an average sand thickness of 45 ft. The reservoir contains a 33' API, 6-cp oil. Combustion was started Nov. 22, 1960. The initial air injection capacity was 750 Mscf/D, but it was eventually increased to 2,000 Mscf/D. The test was surrounded by an active water flood; therefore, water production was initially high, but decreased as the heat wave moved toward the producing wells. Oil-bank arrival at an individual well was indicated by a drop in GOR and WOR, and an increase in oil production. Combustion-front arrival was evident at three of the pilot producers, and they were plugged. Cumulative oil production from pilot area wells war over 12,000 bbl. Operational difficulties were negligible and only conventional equipment was necessary. The combustion efficiency of this test averaged over 80 per cent. Results from coring showed that the leading edge of the combustion front tended to be wedge-shaped but a nearly complete sweep of the reservoir was eventually obtained. An isopach map based on evidence from 10 core holes and the existing wells showed that 126 acre-ft had been swept by the heat wave. Using this swept volume, an air requirement of 15.7 MMscf/acre-ft was calculated. It was calculated that 275 ,STB/acre-ft was consumed bv the heat wave. INTRODUCTION There is a large amount of oil remaining in reservoirs that have been water flooded. A study of ways to recover this oil showed that the forward combustion process might be applicable. Results from a number of forward combustion tests have been reported in the literature, but none of these tests were conducted in a watered-out system. The Delaware-Childers pilot thermal test was initiated in 1960 to define the operating characteristics of underground combustion in this watered-out Bartlesville sand reservoir, The purpose of this paper is to present the pilot test results in detail. FORWARD COMBUSTION PROCESS The forward combustion process consists of initiating combustion in the formation surrounding an injection well and driving this heat wave through the formation toward offset producing wells. As the combustion front progresses through the reservoir, oil and formation water are vaporized, driven forward in the gaseous phase, and recon-densed in the cooler part of the formation. These distilled liquids, water of combustion and gaseous combustion products, form a bank or three-phase region ahead of the burning front. This bank pushes mobile reservoir fluids toward the production wells. The rate of movement of the combustion front is controlled by the rate at which the nondistill able residue which serves as process fuel can be completely burned off the sand. The production performance from a heat wave conducted in a watered-out oil reservoir will differ from one conducted in a dissolved gas-depleted reservoir because of the difference in fluid saturations. The primary depleted reservoir contains connate water saturation, relatively high oil saturation and some gas saturation. The watered-out reservoir contains a highly mobile water saturation, residual oil saturation and little gas saturation. As the combustion front moves forward in either type of depleted reservoir, it drives the distillable oil, the water in place and the water of combustion ahead, and burns the nondistillable portion of the oil. THIS paper deals principally with investigations undertaken by the Welding Research Sub-committee of the Welding Committee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation. The general object of the investigations has been to extend the use of welding in the construction of merchant ships and, specifically, to provide a definite basis for obtaining the best economy and efficiency in employing welding in place of riveting in the construction of the hulls of such ships. Composition of Ship-plate Steel The chemical composition of the steel employed in such hull construction varies with the thickness of the plates. Through the courtesy of Mr. H. Jasper Cox of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, the following information may be given concerning the kind of steel plate employed in American Shipyards in 1918 for the hull construction of merchant ships. Lloyd's requirements do not relate to the chemical composition. They require a tensile strength of 58,000 lb. per square inch (40.75 kg. per sq. mm.) for their lower limit and 72,000 lb. per square inch (50.59 kg. per sq. mm.) for their upper limit. For the information of the Committee, Lloyd's obtained from their surveyors at various works data of the carbon content, which is as follows:

THE degree to which our mineral requirements are being met by mining leaner, more complex or more remote deposits is indicated by developments during 1953. Heavy capital investment, skilled technical advice, planning, and able execution are requirements for the typical venture. Producers, faced with rising costs and with softer prices, are seeking improved mining and recovery. Developments in production of iron ore are typical of the course being followed in metal and nonmetal mining. Iron ore development in the U. S. is concentrated on the spectacular work with Lake Superior taconite, while in Canada new production is expected from Labrador and output from Steep Rock, Algoma, and Newfoundland is being increased. Shipment of iron will soon be made from Venezuela.

IN the pressure die-casting of zinc alloys it is customary to force the molten alloy under high pressure into a permanent steel die by means of a plunger moving in a bushing that has a clearance on the diameter of the order of 0.002 in. Successful operation of the plunger type of machine requires the presence in the zinc alloy of certain percentages of aluminum. Without these aluminum additions, the normal reaction of molten zinc on ferrous materials causes sticking of the plunger and a complete shutdown of the equipment. All of the zinc alloys used for pressure die-casting today contain approximately 4 per cent of aluminum, which is more than sufficient to make plunger operation feasible. The clearance between the plunger and its bushing is an important matter. As the space becomes larger, there is a loss in effective metal pressure. Ordinary gray cast iron served fairly well and is still used in some machines. However, the rate at which the plunger clearance increases with this material is considered by many to be far too great. There is, therefore, a serious interest in finding new materials more capable of retaining the desired clearance during long periods of use. Today many die casters are using special materials for plungers and bushings selected by the somewhat expensive and time-consuming test of actual experience. An analysis of the problem reveals two possible end points of plunger operation: (1) the building up of zinc-alloy plunger-material reaction products in sufficient bulk to cause sticking and (2) rapid solution, wear or erosion, all of which will increase the clearance to an undesirable extent. If neither of these takes place, the plunger will operate for a long time, of course. The authors have developed a laboratory apparatus in which the action of a plunger moving in a bushing immersed in molten zinc alloy could be simulated closely. Such a machine made possible a more rapid and less expensive survey of the available construction materials and an analysis of the specific alloying reactions taking place in the clear-ance area.

COPPER and the copper-base solid solutions readily form twin crystals when plastically deformed at a suitably elevated temperature or annealed after cold deformation. In fact, no feature of the microstructure of these materials is more prominent or characteristic than these straight-sided bands or simple lines of division which sometimes come from groups of thin polysynthetic lamellae, penetrating part way or wholly through the parent grain substance, but often divide the grain into a few or perhaps only two crystallographically related parts. Nearly always the bands as seen in the usual microscopic examination of a specimen come into vivid contrast with the adjacent crystalline material owing to the inherent difference in orientation. Bands which under special conditions of orientation cannot be seen with vertically incident light are often visible under oblique illumination and, when this fails, contrasting effects usually may be obtained by using polarized light. There is no longer any doubt that these synthetic banded structures obtained in the ordinary course of working and annealing are due to twinning of the spinel type which was observed long ago in a number of metals crystallizing in the isometric system.1 It has been customary in metallurgical literature to designate these synthetic twins, which grow into prominence during an annealing process, as "annealing twins" without regard to the actual mode of their formation, which is, indeed, obscure and with scant recognition of the fact that prior deformation is essential, no twins having been observed in metal of known unstrained history. This is questionable; especially in view of. the fact that in a number of metals and minerals, reorientation into the twin configuration is known to occur as a result of a simple shearing mechanism along the recognized twinning planes and the

INTRODUCTION Washability characteristics derived from float-and-sink analysis in Chapter 4 demonstrate that coal is intrinsically heterogeneous, and this heterogeneity is also evident in the proximate, ultimate, and size analyses. A range of particles from high to low specific gravity is usually seen in the run-of-mine coal. One objective of coal preparation is to recover the high quality float material (the particles of lower specific gravity) such that the recovered product meets certain quality specifications, as well as to reject or recycle low quality particles of higher specific gravity. The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants and by theoretical calculation based on run-of-mine washability studies, are known to be different with each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods to predict the technical and economical efficiency of separation of cleaning equipment and systems. Many formulas have been proposed by international investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations, primarily based on the yield and/or ash of the various products of coal cleaning. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. Any laboratory corrosion test, as judged from the practical point of view, is valuable only to the extent that it foretells what will, in all probability, occur in service. Such a test is most properly to be considered as a "pilot test," that is, a test which indicates the direction along which action may be expected to occur rather than as a truly quantitative test which would be expected to tell just how and to what extent the action would proceed. It is generally recognized that laboratory corrosion tests should be chosen with particular reference to the character of service expected for any particular type of metal, so far as it can be foreseen. Even when this requirement has been fulfilled, however, the question whether the actual service behavior of the material is in accordance and general agreement with predictions based upon such laboratory tests is always a pertinent one. The information available in the technical literature bearing on the correlation between the service behavior of metals from the corrosion standpoint, and the results obtained with the same metals in laboratory corrosion tests is very meager, indeed. The results which have been obtained in weather-exposure tests of sheet duralumin which form the body of this discussion are presented here for their bearing on this particular phase of the problem of the corrosion resistance of duralumin. Although the exposure tests described have not been completed, in the sense that all of the tests, in the series initially laid down, have been accomplished, still the general trend shown by the results is so clear that a number of definite conclusions at this stage (subject, of course, to possible modification in the light of later results) are believed to be warranted. The tests reported upon here form one phase of the much broader study of this subject which has been under way for several years in which the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department, the Army Air Corps and the Bureau of Standards have cooperated. It is generally recognized that laboratory corrosion tests should be chosen with particular reference to the character of service expected for any particular type of metal, so far as it can be foreseen. Even when this requirement has been fulfilled, however, the question whether the actual service behavior of the material is in accordance and general agreement with predictions based upon such laboratory tests is always a pertinent one. The information available in the technical literature bearing on the correlation between the service behavior of metals from the corrosion standpoint, and the results obtained with the same metals in laboratory corrosion tests is very meager, indeed. The results which have been obtained in weather-exposure tests of sheet duralumin which form the body of this discussion are presented here for their bearing on this particular phase of the problem of the corrosion resistance of duralumin. Although the exposure tests described have not been completed, in the sense that all of the tests, in the series initially laid down, have been accomplished, still the general trend shown by the results is so clear that a number of definite conclusions at this stage (subject, of course, to possible modification in the light of later results) are believed to be warranted. The tests reported upon here form one phase of the much broader study of this subject which has been under way for several years in which the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department, the Army Air Corps and the Bureau of Standards have cooperated. In the course of a comprehensive investigation for the development of the electrical process for the dehydration of oil-field emulsions, the writer has had an unusual opportunity to direct and execute a number of related, parallel studies concerning crude oil emulsions and extending over a period of nearly six years. Among these was an investigation utilizing the microscope for studying both the general characteristics of crude oil emulsions, the nature of their electrical charge and the action of an alternating current field in causing coalescence of the finely dispersed, more or less permanently suspended, emulsion particles into larger droplets of such mass that subsequent dehydration would follow by the ordinary process of settling, further agglomeration of the water droplets and, finally, separation into commercially dry, pipe line oil and a clean water discharge. It is not the purpose of this paper to enter into a detailed discussion of the highly specialized subject of microscope technique, nor into a theoretical discussion concerning the origin of the electrical charge on the emulsion particle or concerning the mechanism of the electrical phenomena occurring during the electrical treatment of oil-field emulsions. In a short paper of this character one can hope to touch on only a very limited discussion of the theoretical aspects of crude oil emulsions. The subject of emulsions and colloids is comprised in a comparatively young science in which, however, very rapid progress is being made and consequently it is undergoing many changes; a tentative conclusion valid today may be overthrown tomorrow. Nor would it be a simple science even if it were no longer undergoing this rapid progress; a thorough study of emulsions is based upon a knowledge of such fundamental subjects as molecular structure, ionization and other electrical phenomena, surface chemistry, surface and interfacial tension phenomena, viscosity and other factors too numerous to discuss here and the fundamental theories of which are still undergoing more or less change. AT the Cleveland meeting of the Institute in October, 1912, I had the honor to present a paper outlining the conditions surrounding the charcoal iron industry, and giving some of the results of an investigation started about three years ago for the purpose of determining the reason for the poor reputation of the Lake Superior charcoal irons as compared with the Southern and Eastern irons. In that paper I explained the effect of high carbon on quality, and tried to make clear that that paper was a preliminary one, as we felt convinced that we should eventually discover other factors affecting quality. The progress of the investigation has brought out facts that seem to us of the utmost importance practically and theoretically, and the purpose of the present paper is to present these facts with the proofs which seem to us to establish them. The closing year of the nineteenth century saw the publication of the first definite and connected statement of the relationship between the cast irons and the steels.' The metallurgical world was ready to accept the fundamental unity of these two series, acceptance being greatly hastened by Professor Howe's classic paper, The Constitution of Cast Iron, presented at the Richmond meeting of the Institute, February, 1901.

Introduction.—In the year 1885, the writer signed a contract to take charge of the reopening and developing of the celebrated old mines of " El Cerro Rico de Potosi." Two years earlier, an Eng- . lish firm of engineers had made a very glowing report on the property. In the summer of 1885, telegrams arrived from the parties in charge of operations at the mountain, claiming the finding of one of the old veins, with an average richness of over 200 ounces to the ton. In the fall of 1886, the author first personally visited Potosi, but found neither the English report nor the telegram borne out by the facts. After an expenditure of over half a million of dollars and more than three years of continuons hard work, the writer succeeded in unwatering and developing one of the principal old veins of the mountain. This vein, called "Cotamitos," now yields ores of about 75 ounces to the ton, and the old historic mountains of Potosi may be said to have again fairly entered the list of silver-producers. The experience of the author, during his residence in Bolivia, and data obtained from Sr. Don F. Avelino Aramayo, form the basis of this description. POTOSI. Etymology of the Name.—The Quichuá (pronounced Keechna) Indians, known to North American students as the " Incas," although the word "inca" merely signifies ''king," or "chief," of the Quichuás, called the mountain "Sumac-orcko," or the beautiful mountain." Eighty-three years before the discovery of the mountain by the Spaniards, the inca, or king, Huaina Ccapac, travelling from Cantumarca to Calque-Porco, saw the mountain of Potosf and, admiring its grandeur and beauty, said that within its bowels there was, no doubt, much silver. He ordered his vassal* to work the mines. They, having carried their mining implements to the mountain, ascended it and were on the point of commencing work, when they heard a voice of thunder, which said: " Do not take

Oxygen and sulfur distributions in commercial, 5-ton ingots of killed, medium carbon steel are described. Oxygen distribution is found to vary with deoxidation practice. Irregular distribution of oxygen within ingots makes necessary special precautions in sampling of rolled products for analysis of oxygen. Oxygen distribution is discussed in terms of recently published solidification concepts which had been successfully applied to simpler cases of segregation. These concepts have been found inadequate to explain observed oxygen distributions. Convective movements of the liquid metal, as determined by tracer elements, are shown to be capable of accounting for the observed distributions of oxygen. IN an effort to explore the origin of surface and subsurface imperfections in pierced steel products, a study of oxygen and sulfur segregation was made on ingots cast in open-top and hot-top molds. The results of our previous investigations1"3 have indicated the importance of the location and amount of oxide inclusions in an ingot. Inclusions close to the surface of the ingot have been found to contribute greatly to the formation of imperfections in the surface of finished products. This study of the effects of deoxidation and casting practice on segregation and the resulting oxygen distribution in ingots was initiated to determine the parameters controlling the location of inclusions in an ingot. Segregation of solute elements during solidification of low-melting binary alloys has been studied in the past.1, 5 Formation and growth of inclusions in iron melts have been studied under specific conditions."- In spite of these and other recent studies,10-12 segregation during solidification of commercial, killed steel ingots is not well understood. Consideration of solidification rates, of segregation during solidification of the chill, dendritic, and central zones, and of material balances for the segregated elements has indicated that a simplified theoretical solidification model is not adequate. However, the observed high oxygen contents in localized volumes of the dendritic zone can be rationalized if additional effects of convection currents in the ingots, precipitation, and rapid growth of new phases are considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Steelmaking and Processing. A group of nine killed. medium carbon steel heats having compositions listed in Table I have been studied. The deoxidation and mold practices used were varied to give a wide range of steel oxygen contents. The amounts of aluminum added to the ladle and the ingot casting practices (hot top and open top) were the main variables. The steel was made by a duplex practice in 160-ton tilting basic open-hearth furnaces. All nine heats were top-cast into 24 by 24 in. big end down, fluted molds, to a height between 60 and 76 in., using both open tops and exothermic hot tops. The deoxidation practice and the tapping and teeming details for each heat and ingot studied are given in Tables II and III, respectively. Hot-top practice is indicated by the letter H following the heat designation. Furnace and ladle temperatures were measured by standard disposable-tip, Pt/10 pet PtRh thermocouples. Teeming-stream temperatures were obtained as described by Samways et al.,13 by immersing a Pt/10 pet PtRh thermocouple, covered by a silica sheath, into the teeming stream under the nozzle. The output of this thermocouple was recorded with Leeds & Northrup Speedomax potentiometer. Calibration of the latter thermocouples was based on the freezing point of a pure iron/oxygen alloy (2795°F). The accumulated errors of measurements were within ±10°F. The thermocouple measurements were supplemented in this investigation by continuous recording of a ratioing, two-color pyrometer (Shawmeter), protected from smoke by a blast of clean air within the sighting tube, and calibrated to read with better than ±10°F accuracy. Following teeming of three heats, P, R, and T, tracer elements were added to the steel in the molds to obtain a record of the progress of solidification. As soon as the teeming stream was shut off, a 0.010-in.-thick steel can containing a mixture of crushed standard ferro-titanium and ferro-vanadium (0.05 pet of each alloy element) was plunged into the middle of the steel pool to a depth of 6 in. In about 30 sec no indication of the can or its contents remained. The surface of the open-top ingots solidified in 20 to 30 sec. A study of liquid metal movement and the precipitation of oxides was facilitated materially by use of the tracer technique as titanium has a low distribution coefficient between solid and liquid steel while vanadium has a high distribution coefficient.
