One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining, and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to cope with them. The history of mining shows that until about the last 50 years, much work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high-pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated about the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its, effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps," a term which was probably derived from the German word "damps," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were : Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere in which a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp A flammable mixture of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide, most often found in mines during fires or after explosions.

All important industries have certain basic principles in common which govern them and give them a family resemblance. In addition, each industry has a certain individuality due to some principle or principles which govern, or are accepted as governing, that industry and which is not effective in others. The customs and practices of an industry depend on these basic principles much as the corollaries follow a proposition in geometry. After the proposition is proved or is accepted as proved, the corollaries are seen to be true almost without additional evidence or proof. In many cases, the corollaries are more important in practical affairs than the proposition on which they depend. By continued application the corollaries may come to be accepted as law and the fact that their truth depends on the correctness of the fundamental proposition is forgotten or ignored. If it is discovered that an error was made in demonstrating the proposition and that the proposition is untrue, the corollaries are, in most cases at least, equally untrue. Considerable time may be required, however, to realize the fact that the corollaries have failed, particularly if they have been embodied in custom and law. For example, in the business of government the proposition that women are intellectually inferior to men was formerly considered, by most men at least, to be duly proved if not axiomatic. This propositiot was never embodied in law, but its corollaries—that the rights of the wife in property and even in her own children were inferior to the rights of the husband, and that women had no place in governmental affairs—were duly incorporated in law or so completely approved by custom that they had the effect of law. Developments of the past few decades have proved, to the satisfaction of the majority, that woman's intellectual inferiority to man had not been satisfactorily demonstrated, and that the proposition that she was inferior, although accepted for many generations, was untrue. It was not so great a shock to men to discover that this proposition was wrong as it was to find out that its corollaries were also untrue and that the laws embodying them were not good laws and were subject to repeal. IN discussing the classification of iron to-day, we are to leave out of consideration the general division into non-malleable or cast iron and malleable iron, as to the adequacy of which no question has been raised; and to confine ourselves to the subdivisions of malleable iron. This has been classified, according to the extent to which the properties imparted by carbon are present (viz., resilience, hardness, strength„ and, above all, the capacity for being hardened by sudden cooling from a high temperature), into (1) wrought iron which cannot be hardened, and (2) steel which can be hardened; and this classification I shall, for briefness, term the carbon classification. Until within a few years all authorities, both metallurgical and general,, have concurred in explicitly recognizing the carbon-given qualities, and preeminently the capacity for being hardened, as the essential qualities of steel ; this is laid down with clearness by every writer on the subject. For several years this old classification has not been sufficient to, meet all our needs, since the genius of Bessemer, Siemens, and, I may add, Holley, has produced wrought iron which has been perfectly melted, and thus freed from certain mechanical adhering impurities. This causes what we call homogeneousness for want of a better word, and gives rise to many important qualities which the old wrought iron had not;. qualities universally recognized, though not readily described. I shall, for briefness, style them the fusion qualities, and a classification based on them., a fusion classification. THE rapid increase in reliability, the low cost f operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the' motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made.

The fracture path in a Cu-4 pct Ag alloy wet with mercury was found to he dependent on the heat treatment used prior to tensile testing. Both quenched and slow-cooled alloys were embrittled by the mercury.. For quenched alloys, which were single -phase, the crack path was intergranular. Slowly cooled alloys, which contained precipitate platelets, exhibited transgranular fracture. By comparing stress-strain data for these alloys with similar data on mercury -embyittled solid-solution alloys, it was found that the role of the precipitate and that of the grain boundary in the fracture process were equivalent . THE fracture path which results when metals are strained in a liquid environment appears to be dependent upon the nature of the specific system. Mixed transgranular and intergranular cracking has been observed in the 2024 T4 aluminum alloy when wet with a Hg-Zn amalgam.' Transgranular fracture was induced in an A1-4 pct Cu alloy by masking off the grain boundaries from the liquid Hg-Zn amalgam.' The embrittlement of solid-solution alloys of copper in mercury results in intergranular fracture.' The effect of a precipitated phase on the fracture path in copper alloys is the subject of the present investigation. Cu-4 pct Ag was chosen so that its behavior could be compared with previous work on embrittlement of copper alloys. PROCEDURE High-purity copper (99.999 pct) was used as a base metal, along with 99.999 pct purity silver. Melting was carried out in graphite crucibles with manual agitation to get adequate mixing. The ingots were homogenized by means of vacuum annealing, chemically cleaned, and cold-rolled with intermediate vacuum anneals, to the desired thickness of 0.025 in. The rolled sheets were sheared to the final specimen size of 1 by 0.025 by 0.1 in. The specimens were then electropolished in phosphoric acid (concentrated) and heat-treated in an evacuated capsule at the solution temperature of 770°C. One batch was slow-cooled and the other quenched in water. The thermal etching which occurred during heat treatment was sufficient to permit grain boundary and precipitate delineation. Tensile tests were carried out in air and in mercury on a Table-Model Instron at a pulling speed of 0.2 in. per min. Wetting was accomplished by electro-polishing in phosphoric acid, rinsing in alcohol, and immersing in a pool of mercury. Once wet the coating was stable throughout the mechanical tests. In our studies it was found that wetting the surface or total immersion in mercury produced identical results. For convenience, the wetting technique was used for the experiments described. The crack pattern was observed directly on the surface by removing the mercury after testing. De-wetting was accomplished by flame heating the samples in a vacuum after testing and before observation of the surface. No etchant or polishing was used so as not to obscure the crack pattern on the surface. The mercury removal, however, resulted in a pitted surface but otherwise left the pertinent features visible. Photomicrographs were taken in this condition so as not to disturb the structure associated with the crack pattern. The average precipitate spacing was measured previous to coating the sample with mercury by use of an optical eyepiece micrometer. Generally speaking, drilling equipment and techniques presently in use are not capable of meeting the complex technical-and economic-requirements of deep core drilling. Drilling to great depths involves increasing risk, time, and money. And it is especially true that costs increase with depth when conventional core drilling methods are used. Introduction of wire-line drilling techniques has been a great boon to deep core drilling, and is rapidly gaining general acceptance. But, in spite of recent progress, there remains a great need to improve productive drilling time and penetration rates, and still maintain high core recoveries.

' I. Natural-Gas Explorations. The rapid development of the natural-gas* industry in Western Pennsylvania, and the great economy which results from its use, both for manufacturing and domestic purposes, has led to an inquiry as to the occurrence of this gaseous mineral in all thickly populated and large manufacturing centers of the United States. Natural-gas springs are to be found in almost every State in the Union, and in many States gas has been obtained in wells sunk either for water, oil, or gas, or in search of solid mineral deposits. The occurrence of natural gas is, however, not dependent upon mere chance, as is popularly supposed, but upon the existence of special geological phenomena; this fact is now recognized by professional men and by many practical men concerned either in the exploration for or in the use of this gas. The desire among our leading manufacturers, to emulate Pittsburgh, has led to the sinking of many wells in many localities, in search of natural gas. Some of these wells are now being located and drilled under the direction of professional experts, but many more have been, and are still being located by "quack " explorers, who often depend upon spiritualistic communications, or the diviningrod, or by intelligent persons, who are ignorant, however, of the geological and physical conditions under which gas has already been found. In this paper, the author derives a series of formulas from basic principles and illustrates the application of these formulas to practical grinding charge problems. The paper establishes the nearly proportional relationship of mill power to charge level and shows how this relationship can be used to advantage in the design, manufacture and operation of grinding mills. The procedures outlined offer a rapid means of anticipating the power requirements for a given charge or determining makeup charges for a given power reading. The theories which have been developed concerning the dynamics of grinding have been motivated largely by the desire to derive workable formulas for the accurate determination of grinding mill power. This accurate determination has always been handicapped by the large number of variables to be considered, some of which are mill diameter, length, speed, liner design, grinding charge and material density, volumetric mill loading, internal friction, and charge size and gradation. In efforts to determine mill power, attempts have been made to utilize torque concepts. The formulas derived consider the grinding mass as a rigid body and utilize factors that are based on empirical data so that the movement of the charge within the mill is compensated for. These formulas are of principal interest to the mill designer since he is charged with the responsibility of analyzing all of the variables and from them predicting a mill size and a motor size which are compatible both with each other and with the grinding job for which they were intended. The mill operator, on the other hand, has an entirely different problem. The mill dimensions are already established and so is the driving motor. The operator's main concern is to obtain maximum performance from the mill he already has. For him, the many variables which perplex the mill designer are fixed values. Mill diameter, length and speed are set and, to a large extent, so are the conditions inside the mill from which the torque formula advocates derive their empirical data. It is conceivable that if the major mill dimensions which affect power demand are held constant, and if the variables influencing empirical factors are held fairly constant, as they are in an operating mill, then the only major variable remaining which affects power is the level of the charge itself. The papers discussed in the following pages were presented during two sessions of the Geophysics Education Committee of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Feb. 17 and 18, 1941. At the first meeting, to consider the "Influence of Geophysics upon Geology Curricula," this Committee was joined by the Geophysics and Mining Geology Committees of the A.I.M.E., the Society of Economic Geologists, representatives of the American Geophysical Union, and delegates from the Committees on College Curricula and on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Quentin D. Singewald and Sherwin F. Kelly presided. At the ensuing session, especially emphasizing the integration of geology, physics and chemistry for the solution of earth problems, the joint participants with the Geophysics Education Committee were the Geophysics Committee, and representatives of the American Geophysical Union and of the Committee on College Curricula of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Richard M. Field and W. R. Chedsey presided. In the following summary of the discussion at the two meetings, written discussion submitted subsequently is not differentiated from that offered orally at the session. A provisional report of the Geophysics Education Committee was presented at the second session, and some of the following discussion refers to it. This report has not been printed (it is anticipated that a more comprehensive, final one will be rendered at the 1942 annual meeting), but a few mimeographed copies of this provisional report are at the A.I.M.E. headquarters and will be mailed on request. . Dr. W. P. HAYNES presented some notes prepared by Dr. F. H. LAHEE, Chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' Committee on College Curricula. This Committee's inquiries reveal the general opinion that a four-year academic preparation is inadequate, five or six being advisable. The fundamentals, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English composition, should be stressed in the first three years, with specialization in the last two or three years. Some companies provide an apprenticeship period, and themselves give additional training.. During academic years more attention needs to be given to engineering training, to field mapping, and in geology to stratigraphy and sedimentation. The amount of mere memory work should be cut, and men trained to observe and reason. Dr. Lahee emphasized the need of more adequate preparation in English composition, because of the inability of many graduates to compose acceptable reports. SHERWIN F. KELLY pointed out that much time in university training, which ought to be devoted to technical subjects, was taken up with English courses. He emphasized that it is the part of the universities to demand of the high schools that the students they send to the university be properly trained to speak and write English. Prof. W. T. THOM protested against the crowding of high-school material into already overcrowded college curricula. C. E. DOBBIN, chairman of the Committee on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, described briefly the work of his committee in publicizing geology, and said that it found a widespread popular interest in the subject but a lack of appreciation of its importance. He recommended that attempts to coordinate the works of geologists and geophysicists be expanded somewhat, toward the further developing and encouraging of a "species of geopolitician" capable of assisting the progress of geology and geophysics by more vigorous advertising of

The mining possibilities of the volcanic area south of Bel-mont, Nye county, Nevada, have long been known. Some of the old-time prospectors knew that gold existed there. Its remoteness from any source of supplies, its long distances from water, the absence of game, and more, perhaps, the lack of grass for animals to subsist upon, has made this an unattractive region in which to search for mines. The decline of the Comstock mines, the exhaustion of sundry large and rich ore-bodies, the high cost of mining, marketing, and, particularly, the ruinously high freight-charges upon refractory ore that had to be shipped to distant smelters, have kept investors out of Nevada for the last few gears; and mining people have hardly yet awakened to the importance of To-nopah, Goldfield, and perhaps the newer and less developed districts. The discovery of Tonopah by J. L. Butler, who located the Mizpah claim in May, 1900, and the fortunes soon realized there, attracted many people. As the boom declined, many went away, some scattering out into the surrounding country, and the population is now about 7,000. In the fall of 1902 a discovery of gold was made 23 miles south, in what is now known as the Sandstorm group, 4 miles NW. of Goldfield. In the winter of 1903—4 the Combination, January and Florence mines were discovered, and shipments of high-grade ore soon followed. In January, 1905, there were 10,000 people in Gold-field. In June, 1904, rich gold-ore was found 85 miles SE., at the foot of the south end of the Kawich mountains, but this discovery was kept quiet until a re-location could be made. On August 10, 1904, the Bullfrog claims, and a month later the Ladd mountain and neighboring claims, were located. The Shoshone group was located September 24. This district is

ON Aug. 10, 1884, the Retsof Mining Co. began the sinking of an 18 by 12-ft. shaft at Retsof, N. Y. Rock salt was reached in 1885, in September, at 1008 ft. below the surface. The first salt was shipped in the fall of 1885. A timber breaker was built in 1886. In July, 1895, there was a consolidation of the Retsof Mining Co., the Greigsville Salt & Mining Co., the Livonia Salt Co., and the Lehigh Salt & Mining Co. These consolidated salt companies are now known as the Retsof Mining Co., a subsidiary of the International Salt Co. Eventually all of the mines were closed except the mine of the Retsof Mining Co., at Retsof, Livingston County, New York. On July 6, 1921, about ½ mile south of the original shaft and plant of the Retsof Mining Co., a new 9 by 28-ft. concrete-lined shaft was started. The shaft is 1063 ft. deep from the top of the shaft collar to the bottom of the salt bed. At the same time a reinforced-concrete breaker and other buildings were erected. This new plant began opera-tions on Dec. 15, 1923. It was designed for a capacity of 3000 tons in 8 hours.

Although marked by numerous well-known attributes of its own, gold does not possess a kind and range of physical, chemical and geological characteristics wholly different and apart from those of other metals. Instead, it is merely one of the family of metals, with its individual and distinctive traits subordinate to the underlying family relationships and resemblances. The geologist concerned with pure science will pursue, therefore, the same general course and will examine the same broad kinds of facts and interrelations when studying the occurrence of gold as when studying that of copper or cadmium, or any other metal. But when we come to consider the use and economics of the metals, we discover that gold differs strikingly from all the others. Gold, in short, is unique, not by virtue of its inherent characteristics, but because of a peculiar and concerted psychological regard in which it is held. It will be evident, therefore, that the geologist who would deal with gold supply must give far greater weight to economic considerations than is required in his contacts with any other metal. If the geologist be called the scientist of occurrence, and the economist the scientist of use, the economic geologist stands as the necessary link between them. Perhaps it is in part because the economic geologist has made himself more familiar with the science of occurrence than with the science of use and has thus in some degree failed to bridge effectively the gap between the two fields, especially with regard to gold, that the usen1 of gold now appear to be in a state of general concern and even of alarm for the security and adequacy of future supplies. In the case of no other mineral commodity do the users, as a rule, trouble themselves greatly about the adequacy of supply except in so far as that may affect the price which they shall have to pay for the commodity. Oversupply, with resulting low price, they regard as a gift of good fortune. As to long-term undersupply, they are generally content to go ahead on faith, leaving the producer to discover as best he may the means for meeting their requirements or the inventor to find a substitute. But history has shown that for gold a different situation exists. While

Recently some experimental work was conducted by the author in connection with the direct leaching of certain zinc ores with sulfuric acid with the object of subsequently recovering the zinc by electrolysis. The ores contained relatively large quantities of soluble silica, making it necessary to evolve special methods for handling the silicate solutions resulting from a leach of the ore, and also for the final removal of the silica before electrolysis. The problem was complicated by the presence of vanadium in the ore, the commercial recovery of which was very desirable. This paper, however, deals only with the silica phase of the problem. The zinc in the ore occurs in the form of a silicate (hemimorphite) and, to a very small extent, as the phosphate (hopeite) and carbonate (calamine); the vanadium is found as descloizite and vanadinite but mainly as descloizite. The experimental work was done in a plant producing 50 lb. of zinc = daily, in which the complete cycle of operations, including the final electrodeposition of the zinc, was performed continuously for one year. Some of the conclusions given here are the result of the operations in -this plant; the others are from laboratory tests inaugurated both as a guide to the plant operations and, in certain cases especially, to determine the limits in question. The practice in the 50-lb. zinc plant was to direct leach the ore crushed to pass 40 mesh, with spent electrolyte from the cells containing approximately 3 per cent. zinc and 10 per cent. free acid. This resulted in an acid leach solution and an ore residue. The acid leach solution was ' subjected to a special treatment for subsequent removal of vanadium; then the silica and vanadium in solution were precipitated together and removed as a "silica residue" by pressing through an ordinary plate and frame press. The next step was to treat the filtrate from the silica residue with zinc dust as a final purification step before it went to

The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.
