IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C. WHEREVER the amount of work renders it practicable the plan of using permanent standard solutions, in connection with the colorimetric carbon test, affords such manifold advantages that it is to be strongly recommended. That it has not attained a wider and more general application, is mainly due to the fact that, as the method is generally employed, the difficulty attending the production of the colors, and their doubtful stability when produced, have been only too evident to those who have undertaken their composition. The old method of using standard solutions made from sugar, coffee, etc., has always been hampered by the tendency of the colors to change upon exposure to the light, and the consequent liability to serious error, unless they are closely watched. Appreciating these difficulties, while recognizing the desirability of permanent colors, Mr. Magnus Troilius, at the suggestion of Prof. F. L. Erkmann, investigated the properties of cobalt, copper and ferric chlorides, with the view of determining their efficacy in the production of standard solutions. His results, as obtained, seem to have been satisfactory, but his treatment failed to eliminate many of the objections that have rendered the use of organic colors undesirable. The

This paper states the theory underlying the design of two kinds of dimensionally scaled models of parts of idealized oil fields. One of these simulates an oil well and its surrounding sand for a distance of 16 ft. radially from the well. The other model simulates linear flow through layered sands. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, permeability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of well completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands. Introduction Recent work on the fundamental behavior of flowing mixtures of fluids in sands has resulted in the development of some new theory in this field, much of which has been presented in previous papers.l-4 However, the application of this theory to the behavior of oil wells or oil fields has proved too complicated for ordinary mathematical techniques, except in very highly simplified cases. A practical solution to this problem appears therefore, to lie in the use of dimensionally scaled models of elements of oil fields. The object of this paper is, first, to present the theoretical and experimental basis of the design of such models, and, second, to describe their construction and operation. Experiments now under way on the models already built will yield material for other reports, which will be devoted to interpretation of the results in terms of oil-field behavior. So far, simple dimensional models of two kinds have been built and are being operated. These models represent different parts of an idealized oil field but obey the same underlying theory. The only fluids represented are oil and water, since certain questionable approximations are necessary for gas-liquid systems. General Theory Dimensional models have been used in other fields for a long time, and their theory is adequately given in the literature. 5 Here, it suffices to state that each physical element entering into a dynamic relation may be given a definite description in terms of three fundamental, but arbitrarily chosen, dimensions. These usually are mass, length, and time, symbolized here by the small letters m, I, and t. Two systems are said to be dimensionally similar or dimensionally scaled if for each element in one system there is a corresponding element in the second system and the ratios of the numerical magnitudes of corresponding elements are constant for all elements of the same dimensional type.

THE equilibrium between titanium in liquid iron and titanium oxides has been studied by Hadley and Derge.&apos; They have shown that a minimum occurs in the oxygen content of the metal between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Ti, but its exact level was not fixed. The oxide phase in this minimum range was principally TiO, containing some iron oxide. On the other hand, for concentrations above 5 pct Ti the oxide phase was TiO and the oxygen content of the metal increased rapidly with increasing titanium content. From their observations and the free energy of Ti0 and TiOz reported by Kelley and ah,&apos; it is possible to derive approximate values for the activity coefficients of titanium and oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys and the conditions for equilibrium in steel deoxidation. Neglecting possible departures from the stoichio-metric composition, the condition of equilibrium with Ti0 may be expressed as follows: TiO= Ti_ + C) log K = log NTl + log [% O] + log yTi + log fQ Here as a matter of convenience the titanium concentration is expressed in mol fraction while that of oxygen is in weight percent. The activity coefficients are yTi and fo. The value of log fo approaches zero as the concentration of titanium approaches zero, while that of log yTi approaches a limiting value of In Fig. 1 the sum of log NTi + log [% 0] is plotted for mol fractions of titanium between 0.05 and 0.50. The smooth extrapolation gives a value of —4.15 which corresponds to log K — log y:i . We therefore have the equation: According to the data of Kelley and Mah,&apos; the free energy of formation of Ti0 at 1900°K is -82,400 cal. The free energy of solution of half a mol of oxygen in iron, taking 1 pct 0 as the standard state, is -29,300 cal. From these we write: From these equations the activity coefficient of titanium at infinite dilution in iron is found to have a value of 0.011 or log y°. = -1.96. This is only an approximate value but is certainly better than the estimated 0.05 in Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking To obtain approximate values for the activity coefficient at intermediate concentrations, it is as- sumed that log yTi(l is constant and equal to -1.96. This corresponds to a value of E;: = 3 In yTi/aNTi = 9.0 which is not unreasonable We now have the value for the activity of titanium and the percentage of oxygen in equilibrium with TiO. It is therefore a simple matter to calculate the activity coefficient of oxygen which is shown in Fig. 2. The effect of titanium is rather large, being comparable to that of vanadium, but not so large as has been reported for aluminum. The slope of the line at low concentrations corresponds to E: = aln yo/ aNTi=-0.37. At concentrations below 1 pct Ti the deoxidation constant and oxygen content for equilibrium with TiO, can be calculated from the foregoing data and the free energy of formation of TiO,, which according to Kelley and Mah is -144,600 cal at 1900°K. The free energy of solution of oxygen has been given; that of Ti to form a dilute solution with 1 pct Ti as the standard state is RT ln (0.5585 y:i/47.9) = -34,800 cal. From these data we find (for concentrations in wt pct): TiO, = Ti + 2 -0; hFTgO0= + 51,200 cal log if =-5.89 The interaction coefficients, concentrations being expressed as wt pct, are e;: = alogfTi/a[% Ti] = +0.048 and e:&apos; = a logfo,/a[ojTi] = -0.187. The calculation gives the following results which, in view of the impurity of the oxide phase, must be regarded as approximate:

HAULAGE in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct,‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* STUDIES BY THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on. a test block. Addition of oil to a suspension of hydrophobic coal particles can influence its dewatering characteristics. An agglomeration process occurs in which coal particles are held together by negative capillary pressure at particle/oil/water contacts. Consequently, the units round which flow can occur are enlarged and this improves dewatering parameters such as drainage rate, solids recovery, and equilibrium moisture content. This paper discusses processes which attempt to use this principle, in terms of metallurgical and economic efficiency. The discussion is augmented by results of recent experiments on the effect of oil addition to centrifuges and vacuum filters.

(New Haven Meeting, February, 1909.) THE Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great interest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and the writer were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer&apos;s report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses. INTRODUCTION Over the years, Congress has written into the Internal Revenue Code various provisions aimed at lessening at least one financial burden faced by taxpayers in the mining industry - the federal income tax burden. These provisions include the election to deduct exploration expenses, the election to defer deduction of development expenses, and the percentage depletion deduction. Careful tax planning from the very beginning of a mining venture is essential in taking maximum advantage of these tax benefits. A major decision to be made is the choice of organizational structure. (For a more detailed discussion of this subject, see McCabe, John J., "Developing Structures for Investments in Mineral Property," New York University Institute on Federal Taxation, 42 NYU 24, 1984). One such structure is the use of multiple corporations, with mining activities conducted by one corporation and nonmining activities, such as manufacturing, financing and administration, conducted by the other corporation. This technique, which will be discussed in detail below, can be particularly advantageous in delaying recapture of previously deducted exploration expenses and in maximizing depletion deductions. TAX BENEFITS IN MINING Exploration Subject to certain restrictions discussed below, exploration expenditures (i.e., expenditures paid or incurred during the taxable year for the purpose of ascertaining the existence, location, extent, or quality of any deposit of ore or other mineral, and paid or incurred before the beginning of the development state of the mine are deductible at the election of the taxpayer (Section 617(a)).* Were it not for this option, exploration expenditures would be required to be capitalized and recovered through depletion, after production begins. Exploration of a mineral deposit can be very costly and may not result in commercial production for some time. If the taxpayer has income to he offset by the deductions, a mining venture can usually be structured in such a way as to allow the offset of mining losses against the other income. With today&apos;s high interest rates, this election can be quite valuable in present value terms. Corporate and noncorporate taxpayers are subject to different restrictions on this tax benefit. Corporations may elect to deduct only 85 percent of eligible exploration expenditures (Section 291(b)). (The Tax Reform Act of 1984 reduced this to 80 percent effective for expenditures after December 31, 1984, in taxable years ending after such date). The remaining 15 percent (20 percent after December 31, 1984) is capitalized and recovered at the same rate as five-year ACRS property (Section 291(b)). Individual taxpayers are not subject to this 85 percent rule; however, any amount deducted in excess of ten-year straightline amortization is a tax preference item for individuals (Section 57(a)(5)). Individuals may avoid the tax preference by electing to capitalize exploration expenditures and amortize them over ten years (Section 58(i)). In order to prevent the taxpayer from, in effect, converting ordinary income into capital gain by selling property that has given rise to exploration expense deductions, the Code requires recapture of such deductions upon the occurrence of certain events (Section 617): 1. Upon disposition of the property, adjusted exploration expenditures are recaptured to the extent of gain realized on the disposition (Section 617(d)). 2. If the property is leased, the lessor is disallowed any depletion deduction until his adjusted exploration expenditures have been recaptured in the form of foregone depletion deductions (Section 617(c)).

Streaming-potential experiments were conducted within the Muddy- and Dakota-sandstone interval of a Denver basin well. Analysis of the data shows that, for this case, streaming potentials opposite sands were higher than those opposite shales when the mud was fresh. Streaming potentials opposite shales, however, were of sufficient magniiIlde to be important in SP interpretation. They were linearly dependent upon pressure differential, and they increased with mud filtrate resistivity. The magnitude of streaming potentials opposite sands was influenced by the characteristics of the original mud cake formed at the time of drilling. Use of mud samples taken at the time of logging may not always be satisfactory for determining streaming-potential corrections. Both the streaming and electrochemical potentials were found to be affected by the previous history of the borehole system. Following a change in mud characteristics, several days were required for SP stabilization. This was, in part, due to the mud cake acting as an imperfect shale membrane. INTRODUCTION Laboratory investigations by Wyllie,1 Salisch,2 Moore," Sen Gupta and Bannerjee,0 and Hill and Anderson&apos; have shown that streaming potentials developed across mud cakes deposited on permeable filter beds are of sufficient magnitude to be critically important in SP interpretation. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck,&apos; Gondouin and Scala; and Hill and Anderson." The magnitude of the shale streaming potentials obtained by Schenck and by Gondouin et a1 led these authors to conclude that in many cases the shale streaming potential would approximately equal the mud-cake streaming potential. Hill and Anderson, however, obtained somewhat lower magnitudes of shale streaming potential. The field experiment described in the present paper was a cooperative project carried out by the respective operations and research departments of Schlumberger Well Surveying Corp., Shell Development Co. and Shell Oil Co. The primary objective of the experiment was to determine in the borehole the streaming-potential behavior of both shales and mud cakes under conditions approaching, as nearly as possible, those normally encountered in logging practice. METHODS AND EQUIPMENT WELL A Muddy- and Dakota-sandstone vie11 in the Denver basin was chosen for the experiment. Both sandstones were water-bearing and, since reservoir pressures in these sandstones are abnormally low (gradient of approximately 0.25 psi/ft), it was expected that studies of streaming potential could be conducted from low-pressure differentials (approximately 200 psi) to about 27000 psi by bailing mud from the hole, filling up and then applying wellhead pressure. True stress-true strain data are given for nominally pure molybdenum (99.95 pct) over the temperature range -196° to 1540°C (0.027 to 0.63 T/T). Strain rate sensitivity was determined by rate change tests and stress relaxation tests. Inhomogeneous yielding and strain aging effects were observed. The yield stress and tensile strength depend markedly on temperature below 400°C and are insensitive to temperature in the range 400&apos; to 800°C. The ductile to brittle transition range is +25O to -25OC. Strain rate sensitivity and stress relaxation effects are very large near room temperature. THIS report presents data which were obtained as a part of a continuing program designed to document the deformation behavior of nominally pure metals over a wide temperature range.&apos;" This research program is rooted in the conviction that sufficient tensile and creep data of appropriate quality and detail does not exist to provide precise phe-nomenological descriptions of the deformation behavior of pure metals as a function of temperature, strain rate, and grain size. Such knowledge is needed to provide a firm base for alloy design and an experimental framework to which theories of deformation must conform. These data also complement a parallel exploratory program investigating the properties of refractory metals, including molybdenum, and their alloys. Several important reviews and research reports dealing with the tensile properties of molybdenum as a function of temperature have appeared."-lo To a great extent the work to be reported in the present paper parallels that of Bechtold and of Pugh. The authors&apos; results are in general agreement with those of Bechtold and Pugh. The principle differences be- tween the present experiments and those published previously are as follows: 1—Wire specimens prepared from arc cast molybdenum were used in the present experiments, bar specimens were used by others. Pugh used arc cast material while Bechtold&apos;s most extensive results" were obtained on powder metallurgy specimens. 2—Several different grain sizes were tested in the present experiments. 3—The testing range was extended to cover from -196°C to 1570°C (0.027 to 0.63 T/Tm). 4—The combination of wire specimens, high speed autographic recording, and a stiff testing machine permitted more detailed study of initial yielding. The principle contribution of the present paper is the demonstration of the relatively consistent mechanical properties of nominally pure arc cast molybdenum specimens of differing metallurgical history. Bechtold and Scotts have shown that arc cast and powder metallurgy molybdenum samples have comparable tensile properties in the range —75" to 200°C when processed to have the same re-crystallized grain size. Material The molybdenum used in this investigation was supplied by the Climax Molybdenum CO. Its metallurgical history is outlined in Table I; the final products were 0,030 in, diam wire specimens annealed at 1100&apos; and 1375°C and 0.060 in. diam wire

Consolidation of hydride process, electrolytic, calcium reduced, and comminuted thorium powder, as well as saw chips and lathe turnings, by vacuum hot pressing and by cold pressing-vacuum sintering was studied. The mechanical properties of the consolidated material in the extruded form are compared with those of wrought castings. AT present there little little industrial use for thorium metal, although it has some important though small scale applications in electronic equipment. Despite its high inelting point—about 1750°C —a low modulus of elasticity, 11.4xl0 si at 20°C;&apos; relatively low mechanical properties coupled with a high density, 11.7 g per cu cm; and an unusually high chemical activity with normal atmospheres limit any structural applications. The metal is utilized as an alloying element principally in magnesium. Pure thorium finds utility as electrodes in gaseous discharge lamps such as the high intensity mercury lamp&apos; because its low work function and high electron emissivity provide lower starting potentials and more uniform operating characteristics than other available materials. The metal is also found in photoelectric tubes used for the measurement of the ultraviolet spectrum." Thorium metal has been used in germicidal lamps of the cold cathode type as sputtered coatings on nickel in order to provide a low work function surface and a low starting voltage. Other applications have involved the radioactive properties of thorium for the production of ionized particles." The potential value of thorium is much greater than its present use pattern because of possible utility in the field of nuclear power. Th may be converted through nuclear reaction to a fissionable element U which should be capable of acting similarly to U in the g&apos;eneration of atomic power. Thorium has been reported to be about three times as plentiful as uranium in the earth&apos;s crust, placing it in the order of abundance of lead and molybdenum." Thus, it is of interest in augmenting the potential supply of fissionable material for nuclear power. Because of its high melting point, thorium is usually produced as a powder through the calcium reduction of its oxide or thermal reduction of halides by sodium, magnesium, and calcium. It may also be produced in flake form by electrolysis of fused alkali or alkaline earth chloricles and fluorides. Therefore, powder metallurgy assumes importance in the fab- rication of thorium metal shapes. Furthermore, it is rather difficult to obtain pure thorium by melting, as the molten metal reacts readily with graphite as well as oxide, carbide, and nitride refractories. These contaminate the melt with oxides, carbides, and metallic impurities." The current investigation was undertaken to examine the fabrication of thorium by powder metallurgy methods which have been used for the commercial production of beryllium and other metals.&apos; A sparcity of data concerning the comparative cold and hot compaction of thorium powders of different derivation existed. Therefore, all commercially available types were examined along with other experimentally produced thorium powders in order to round out the comparison of consolidated thorium powders with melted reguline metal. Review of the Literature By heating a mixture of ThC1, with potassium, Berzelius made the first thorium metal as an impure powder in 1828. Improvements in the basic process, increasing thorium assay to 99 pct, were made by several investigators including Arsem," Lely and Hamberger10 and Von Bolton." Calcium reduction of Tho, to make powders was investigated by Berger," Huppertz,&apos;" Kroll," and Kuzel and Wedekind.&apos;" A thorium powder produced by this method using a CaC1, fluxing agent assayed 99.7 pct, as reported by Marden and Rentschler.&apos;" Compacted and sintered, this product was found to be ductile, and could be fabricated into wire and sheet. Improvements of the calcium reduction process were made later" wherein CaCl, was eliminated from the reaction, producing metal assaying 99.8 pct Th. Further work by Lilliendah118 howed that a coarser metal could be obtained by the substitution of ThC1, or ThOC1, for oxide with consequent advantage of stability to atmospheric reaction. Reports on the technology of thorium developed in Germany during World War II have been made by Espe."&apos; Thorium powder of 99.5 pct Th was obtained by reduction of the oxide by calcium. Screening to —200 mesh, compacting with about 20 tsi, and sintering in vacuo at 1320" to 1360°C for 3 hr resulted in a porous sinter cake. The sinter cake was sufficiently ductile to be worked into bar, wire, and sheet which could be employed as electrode materials.
