Electrical Conductivity. - The subject of the relative conducting power of different minerals is one of minor interest.* In general most minerals, except those having a metallic luster among the sulphides and oxides, are non-conductors. Only the non-conductors can show pyro-electrical phenomena, and only the conductors can give a thermo-electric current. 437. Frictional Electricity. - The development of an electrical charge on many bodies by friction is a familiar subject. All minerals become electric by friction, although the degree to which this is manifested differs widely. There is no line of distinction among minerals, dividing them into positively electric and negatively electric; for both electrical states may be presented by different varieties of the same species, and by the same variety in different states. The gems are in general positively electric only when polished; the diamond, however, exhibits positive electricity whether polished or not. But the system of timbering which he describes as used in the levels, stopes, etc., though it must be admitted to be very strong and safe, seems to me somewhat extravagant. The amount of timber required every month for such a system must be enormous; and only where suitable material could be cheaply obtained would such a plan be economically practicable. The first point which strikes me is the unusually great diameter of the timber employed. In the mines of Pfaffenberg and Meiseberg, which are under my supervision, the country-rock consists of argillaceous slates, traversed by innumerable small fissures or joints, dipping at all angles and striking to all points of the compass. Introduction Methane is contained under pressure within the fractures and adsorbed on the surface of the coal seams and adjacent strata. It is released into the mine atmosphere during mining of the seam creating explosive gas-air mixtures. Large volumes of air, sometimes as high as 20 tons of air for each ton of coal mined, are circulated constantly to dilute and carry away methane from coal mines. Removal of methane from solid coal, wherever high methane emissions occur, has been discussed by Spindler and Poundstone (1960) and Thakur and Davis (1977). Methane control in longwall gobs is much more complicated. As longwall mining progresses, the overburden continually subsides, and the immediate roof caves behind the roof supports. Even the underlying strata heave and open up communication channels feeding gas to the longwall gobs. The pressure of gas in the underlying and overlying strata is usually higher than the ambient air pressure in the mine. Thus the mine workings become natural pressure sinks, into which gas flows from the entire disturbed zone. Winter (1975) defines this zone as the "gas emission space". Depending on the number of gas-bearing zones in the gas emission space and their gas contents, the total methane emission from longwall gobs could vary from a few to more than one hundred cubic meters of gas per ton of mined coal. Hence the ventilation of longwall faces demands a large quantity of air. This ventilation need is further enhanced by high air losses specially on caving faces (with no stowing of the gobs). The old system of longwall ventilation, the 'U' pattern, where all the air was brought down one gate road and exited through the other gate road, loses large quantities of air through gobs giving a high methane concentration at the return end of the face. The 'Y' ventilation pattern where intake air is brought down both head and tail gate roads relieves the situation to some extent but, on most longwalls, some kind of methane control is still needed. With the onset of longwall mining in Europe several decades ago, the initial work on methane control on longwall has naturally been done there. The basic principle of methane control has always been, and still remains, some means of "bypassing methane from the gas emission space without letting it mix with the mine air". In most cases the bypassing mechanism is either a strategically located borehole or a roadway. A successful methane control program depends on the following basic premises: a. Determination of the geometry of the gas emission space and location of gas bearing horizons therein. b. Estimation of the rate of methane influx into the longwall gob. c. A scheme to bypass the gas in the most economic and efficient manner and thus prevent it from entering the mine atmosphere. In successful methane drainage programs a high proportion, usually between 50 and 70 percent, of the total gas emissions in a working district is removed before it can enter the mine airways. Advantages of methane drainage can be summarized as: 1. Generally reduced methane levels in the mine leading to increased safety and productivity. 2. Reduced air requirements and corresponding savings in ventilation horsepower. 3. Faster rate of advance for development headings and economy in the size of headings. 4. Possible use of mine gas as an additional source of fuel. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the geometry of gas emission space and methane influx therein and discuss more successful European and U.S. longwall gob gas control techniques.

Warren and Averbach's multiple order, Fourier method was applied to solid specimens of SAE 1045 steel. The material was hardened to three hardness levels and specimens of each hardness were shot peened to three intensities. Particle size, root-mem-square strain, mean strain, md macro residual stress were determined for each. Microstrains caused by either hardening or peening varied markedly over microregions. In general, increasing the hardness or peening intensity increased the rms strain and decreased the particle size. Similar effects were observed by varying hardness and peening intensity independently. At a Rockwell hardness of C 50, peening had little effect on line broadening, but both mean strain and macro residual stress increased. Mean strain was independent of column length. Induced macro residual stress by peening was affected most by initial hardness, but not by specific peening intensity. The purpose of this work is to establish the state of residual strain and particle size by X-ray diffraction in hardened and cold-worked plain carbon steel and attempt to relate these X-ray measured parameters to fatigue performance. X-ray line broadening (and its micro implications), along with X-ray residual stress (and its macro implications), may be basic indicators of the inherent fatigue resistance of the material. X-ray line broadening is caused by variable lattice strains and small particle size. Both are a result of plastic deformation which accompanies hardening or cold working processes. Therefore, X-ray line broadening is a good measure of both. warren1 has recently reviewed the Warren and Averbach2,3 Fourier analysis of line broadening. Strain and particle size effects can be separated because broadening due to particle size is independent of order of the diffraction peaks, while broadening due to strain is not. Microstrain is obtained as a root-mean-square strain averaged over discrete distances within the crystals causing diffraction. These distances are quite small, varying from 10 to 10081, and may be interpreted as the gage length over which the strains are averaged. Because of their variable nature, the X-ray line is broadened. The plot of rms strain vs distance (or column length) within the specimen gives a measure of their variability. Small particles also cause X-ray line broadening as already mentioned. A particle is interpreted as a region within a crystal or grain which diffracts X-rays coherently. This region is one of given orientation and may be bounded by a small angle grain boundary, dislocations, a twin boundary, or a stacking fault. The present work covers measurement of X-ray line broadening and macro residual stress on an SAE 1045 steel, quenched and tempered to various hardnesses. Various amounts of cold working were produced by shot peening the surfaces to various Almen intensities. Particle size, root-mean-square strain, and mean strain were calculated from the Fourier coefficients of the X-ray diffraction profiles in a direction normal to the peened surface. No effort was made to separate the various causes of particle size broadening. Macro residual stresses were reported in directions parallel to the peened surface. I) X-RAY METHOD The Fourier coefficients were determined for the 110 and 220 X-ray profiles. They were corrected for instrumental broadening by the method of Stokes,4 using an annealed reference specimen of similar geometry presumed to be free from broadening due to small particles and distortions. The object of the National Research Council in maintaining a system of research fellowships is to promote fundamental research in physics and chemistry primarily in educational institutions in the United States. Safety and health are no longer secondary responsibilities but must be of paramount concern to every mining operation, according to Anthony J. Thompson, an attorney with Hamel, Park, McCabe & Saunders of Washington D.C. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) forecasts an estimated 19,000 inspections during 1979, and the economic and psychological impact of these inspections may he significant. To illustrate his point Thompson reviewed the experiences of a relatively large operation during a recent MSHA visit. The inspector was on the premises for two months, issuing between 250 to 300 "significant and substantial" (s&s) citations. During the most intensive period, about one month in duration, the operation experienced a production loss estimated between 2500 to 3000 tons; an accident rate up 30% over the previous month and 20% over the same month in the preceding year; 100% of the safety director's and safety engi¬neer's time was devoted to the inspection; 50% of top level management's time; and 90% of the mid-level or front line supervisory's time.

TWINNING has long been recognized as a possible mode of deformation in crystalline solids and has been studied in a wide variety of crystals.&apos; Recently, deformation markings which have the topographical characteristics of twins have been seen in tungsten" and the body-centered cubic alloys of tungsten and molybdenum with rhenium.3-7 These markings have been identified as twins because: 1) they are visible after polishing and etching;2,3 2) their formation is accompanied by an audible click and a drop in load;4 and 3) the habit plane is {112}, the plane which has been identified as the twinning plane for several body-centered cubic metals.&apos; However, there has been no published evidence for the specific determination of the twinning direction in rhenium alloys of tungsten and molybdenum, because usually the deformation twins were not broad enough to be detected with a conventional X-ray beam. Consequently, [111] is inferred as the twinning direction since the latter must lie in a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the twinning plane (112). As Sims and Jaffee3 and Lawley and Maddin4 have shown, the addition of rhenium to molybdenum and tungsten increases the ductility of the alloy over that of the pure metal, but twinning is much more profuse in these alloys than in the pure elements, particularly at Mo-35 pct Re*and W-30 pct Re. Since twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron8 and the silicon-irons,9 direct experimental proof that the deformation markings in tungsten and molybdenum alloys of rhenium are twins seemed to be needed. Using the Laue back-reflection technique, the deformation markings in a Mo-35 pct Re alloy are shown to be deformation twins. The twins have a (112) habit plane and the twinning direction is <111>. The Mo-35 pct Re specimen used was taken from a 0.060-in. zone-refined single crystal deformed 6 pct in tension at 78°K. The Laue back-reflection technique, with a film to specimen distance of 2 cm, and white radiation from a copper target were used.

THE steel industry has always been noted for producing men of forceful and versatile personality, many of whom combine the practicality that results from wide experience with an excellent theoretical background that comes from a college training plus years of wide and constant study of metallurgical literature. One of the best known examples of this type is Earle C. Smith, present Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division. After graduating from Ohio State and from Columbia, where he studied under Campbell, Earle started his career at that grand old prewar training school for steel men the Illinois Steel Co., where in the days of the twelve-hour shift he worked on the open-hearth floor. Following World War I, when he was in charge of government inspection at the Central Steel Co., Massillon, Earle held successively jobs of increasing responsibility with Central Alloy Steel, and when this company was taken over by Republic in 1930 he was made assistant district manager and a few years later was appointed chief metallurgist of the whole corporation.

It should be remembered that the coefficient of expansion of concrete is nearly that of iron; therefore in constructing flues the design must take account of this important detail. The cracking of flues, mentioned by Mr. Havard as having occurred at a temperature of 100° C. and above, . were possibly caused by neglecting to appreciate the extent of the expansion and contraction of the concrete. Effect of Atmospheric Moisture.-The moisture present in the atmosphere is exceedingly injurious to flues of any material, and those made of concrete are no more susceptible than of brick. My experience with flues of the Monier construction, having walls from 1.5 to 2.5 in. thick plastered upon a net-work of iron rods, was unsatisfactory from the standpoint of dura¬bility.

Colorado School of Mines Scientific Society held its first meeting on Friday evening, Jan. 14.1916. H. C. Parmalee gave an interesting talk on the Loss of Cyanide by Hydrolysis. F. E. BRIBER, Secretary. The School of Mines Society of the University of Minnesota held a meeting on Thursday evening, Jan. 13, 1916, at which Fred A. Jordan gave a talk on Magnetic Concentration of Iron Ores. Mr. Jordan is at present testing the new magnetic concentrator designed at the. School of Mines Experiment Station. This apparatus, if successful, will open up an enormous tonnage of ore on the Cuyuna and Mesabi ranges. ADOLPH DOVRE, President. At the College of Mines, University of Washington, Seattle, 33 mining men, with experience varying from one to 25 years, have enrolled in the 19th Annual Three Months&apos; Short Session. At the annual smoker tendered the Short Session miners by the student branch of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Capt. R. H. The Commissioner of Education has issued a call for a public conference on business training for engineers and engineering training for students of business. This conference, national in scope and character fully representative of all interests, will be held in Washington, D. C. on June 23 and 24. Educational institutions, commercial organizations, and educational and engineering societies will be given an opportunity to state their views. Engineers, educators and business men will be invited to discuss the following major topics: Business Training for the Engineer; Engineering Training for Commercial Enterprises; Significance of the. War Experience for Engineering Education; Training of the Engineer for Foreign Projects. This conference has been called on behalf of the Conference Committee on Commercial Engineering. This Committee is composed of administrative professors in engineering and commerce from several of the large educational institutions and representatives from the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, The American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society .of Mechanical Engineers, and a committee f fifteen on Educational Preparation for Foreign Service.

Gybbon Spilsbury, and Herbert A. Wheeler. The request of twenty residents of Salt Lake City and vicinity for permission to establish the Utah-Nevada Local Section was granted and R. C. Gemmell was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Organization. The following resolution was adopted: Resolved: That under authority of Article V, Section 7, of the Constitution, a special Committee be and hereby is appointed, to consist of the President and six other members of the Institute, to be named by him, Who shall be authorized to appear before the proper authorities at Washington and urge that Mining Engineers be appointed upon the proposed Commission for revision of the Federal Mining Laws. PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs&apos; scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

RECENT studies have indicated that there may be considerable difference in the cleanliness of the central pipe cavity of open top ingots. It has been speculated that some of this difference arises becausk of reactions that occur during reheating in the blooming mill soaking pits. In this respect, it has been recognized that an oxide coating or flow of slaggy material in the cavity could inhibit welding during hot rolling and thus reduce the amount of sound product which may be obtained. This note is intended to summarize some observations on the structure of a split ingot top which may be useful in describing a mechanism whereby the shrinkage cavity could be oxidized during reheating. A 221/2x241/2 in., big-end-down, test ingot was secured from a routine production heat. The chemical analysis representing this ingot is as follows: 0.08 pct C, 1.04 pct Mn, 0.062 pct P, 0.315 pct S, and 0.02 pct Si. In many of the bituminous-coal districts of this country, more than one seam of workable coal exists, and in most cases the lower seam is the more attractive, owing to either its greater thickness or its superior quality. Apprehension that the mining of a seam will destroy the availability of all overlying seams has hindered the development of many fields and has led to the unprofitable working of certain seams in order to save them from an expected total loss. The U. S. Coal & Coke Co., Gary, W. Va., was the first operator in the Pocahontas field to mine the No. 4 seam extensively, which occurs about 80 ft. above No. 3, the scam that was worked first. This was due to the fact that over large areas the upper seam was the only one of workable thickness, at that time. In two places, both seams were workable in the same area, the No. 4 being thinner and containing more impurities than No. 3 seam. In mining these areas, an attempt was made to keep the workings in the upper seam in advance of those in the lower one, and no pillar robbing was done in No. 3 seam until after pillars in that part of the upper seam directly over it had been mined. This resulted in an excessive development in the lower seam, with large areas of finished rooms and standing pillars. The top fell badly, and after a couple of years the falls became so heavy that pillar drawing was unduly expensive. To overcome this obstacle and allow No. 3 seam to be worked in some territory where No. 4 was thick, but too dirty for present use, a study was made of operating methods applied to superimposed seams in Pennsylvania and Maryland. This was started more than seven yean ago by the writer; his data, supplemented by more recent information gathered by his associates, and by two cases mentioned in recent foreign publications, form the basis of this paper. The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense &o suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial mining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of alluvial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into Russia." The statement itself is not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward. Lounsbury says : One might fairly infer from the way in which it [newspaper English] is often spoken of that with the steadily increasing circulation of this sort of periodical literature there is no hope whatever for our speech. "Of that with" is lamentable. The construction is thoroughly bad, and it is bad mainly because the misplaced prepositions have tangled the meaning. I suggest:
