The historic city of Charters Towers in North Queensland is underlain by an extensive labyrinth of old mine workings in a large number of flat lying, subparallel, main and cross-cutting cross reefs extending of the order of 5 km along strike and down to a depth of 700 m in parts. These old workings produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold at a grade of over one ounce to the tonne prior to closure in 1920.Citigold is progressing the development of a modern, high productivity, low cost new mine to extract extensions of these reefs as well as other as yet un-mined reefs. To do this it is changing the paradigm for operating in such circumstances. This paper first briefly reviews the setting for the development and then discusses the philosophies and concepts that Citigold is proposing to use, harnessing technology to create a mine that exemplifies more productive and safer mining based on operating in the digital age.The paper addresses how a modern approach is being applied to the planning of a mechanised, deep, narrow vein, hard rock gold mine under a city. It also describes briefly the successful æexperimentationÆ with longhole open stoping methods developed at the companyÆs small underground operation (the Imperial Mine) to the south of the city, which will also be expanded substantially as part of the Charters Towers Gold Project.The paper also addresses the development of new and/or modified technologies in the venture, with the objective of pursuing continuous and autonomous mining methods. The company is adopting a holistic systems approach, addressing people, process and technology in order to efficiently identify and locate the high-grade ore zones and then extract them effectively at a high grade by minimising waste development and haulage, dilution and energy consumption, and with minimal environmental impact.CITATION:Lynch, M and White, B, 2013. The Australian mining sector is undergoing a significant transformation with the adoption of advanced technology to the operational landscape. This has highlighted a critical disconnect between our traditional educational systems and the skill requirements of working with these advanced technologies. This paper aims to provide a behavioural science analysis of how the traditional manufacturing mindset, deeply rooted in our educational frameworks from primary to tertiary education, registered training organisations (RTOs), and in-house learning and development, is misaligned with the needs of today’s technologically advanced mining operations. Originating in the industrial revolution, the manufacturing mindset prioritised efficiency, mass production, and the division of labour. In educational institutions, this translated into an emphasis on rote learning, linear examinations, and a rigid adherence to processes and procedures. Such a system, while effective in producing a workforce suited for repetitive and predictable tasks, falls short in fostering skills like problem-solving, adaptability, flexibility, and coping with change – skills that are increasingly vital in a mining sector dominated by automation, robotics, and AI. The paper discusses how the focus on disciplined adherence to standard work procedures and processes in educational and training programs has inadvertently stifled creativity and autonomy in learners. This issue is compounded in the workplace, where employees, having been conditioned to operate within strict guidelines, now face the challenge of adapting to environments where autonomous decision-making and creative problem solving are crucial. In essence, the traditional approach to education and training has prepared individuals for a world of work that no longer exists. This paper advocates for a whole of pipeline approach, grounded in behavioural science, to revamp mining education and training. It highlights the importance of understanding and influencing the behavioural aspects of learning and recommends for an approach that promotes diversity, critical thinking, and adaptability, preparing the workforce to excel in the rapidly changing landscape of the Australian mining sector.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. The need to better understand and develop strategies to improve instantaneous shovel productivity at the Cadia Hill Open Pit Mine (CHM) instigated the development of the æShot to ShovelÆ project. This project has involved the implementation of a drill and blast (D&B) information management system to capture current and future experience. Equally important has been the manual monitoring of shovel productivity and direct use and analysis of high precision GPS and productivity data logged by ModularÆs Dispatch System. The analysis of this type of data was facilitated with the application of GIS based software (ie MapInfo). This has shown to be a powerful medium to display, interpret and assess this type of spatial information on a blast-by-blast basis. Cadia HillÆs well-defined D&B processes supplemented with the application of the above systems are providing a unique capability to assess and better understand the impact of both muckpile conditions and operator proficiency on instantaneous loading productivity. This is facilitating the definition of appropriate optimisation strategies in both drilling and blasting and operator proficiency training. This paper gives a summary of the work conducted in the æShot to ShovelÆ project, describes the engineering tools being implemented and discusses preliminary findings and their practical implications.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober<sup>®</sup> economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. Viscosity of oxide melts is one of the fundamental physicochemical properties that plays a crucial role in important technological and natural processes like slag flow, slag/metal separation, volcano eruptions etc. However, many oxides melt at extremely high temperatures and are highly corrosive in the liquid state, which makes experimental measurement of melt viscosity by traditional experimental techniques a difficult and expensive, if not unachievable, task. In this case it might be useful to employ other methods of viscosity determination such as modelling or simulation. In the present paper the shear viscosity coefficients of selected pure refractory oxides (CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and others) have been simulated at temperatures above their melting points via the classical molecular dynamics and compared to the available viscosity data (eg experimental viscosities, other model predictions) collected by the authors. The simulation has been carried out using the noncommercial molecular dynamics simulation package LAMMPS and the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential, which parameters for the selected oxides were taken from the literature. Several viscosity calculation techniques (the Stokes-Einstein and Green-Kubo equations, the so called Einstein relations, and the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics methods) have been applied to ensure a more reliable viscosity calculation. It has been demonstrated that the simulated viscosity of the selected melts agrees with the available experimental data. It has also been shown that the simulated viscosity of a number of the oxide melts investigated is close to that calculated by phenomenological viscosity models, which supports viscosity extrapolation from the corresponding binaries and ternaries, if no experimental data is present for unary systems. In general, it has been demonstrated that the molecular dynamics simulation could provide a reasonable estimation of viscosity if no other viscosity data is available.

Caval Ridge Mine (CVM) is one of the newly established open-cut coal mines of BHP in Queensland, where no tailings dam is planned to be built in order to minimise environmental impacts from mining activities. The waste streams from the Coal Handling and Processing Plant, including fine tailings dewatered by belt filter presses, coarse rejects, and mixed plant rejects, are co-disposed within waste dumps built with pre-strip and dragline spoils. Due to high rejects output (35 – 60% of feed) and low spoil to reject ratio (< 5) the large quantities of rejects bring significant geotechnical and operational challenges to CVM, which are exacerbated by increasing annual production rates and additional rejects from washing coal from an adjacent mine. Further in-house geotechnical review commenced in mid-2014 based on the initial geotechnical studies during the project stage of CVM between 2011 and 2013. The outcomes have enabled rejects disposal at CVM by constructing large belt filtered tailings cells, coarse rejects only dumps, and co-disposal of the mixed plant rejects at dump tip-heads. This paper presents the rejects disposal strategies at CVM from both technical and operational aspects. It also discusses future projects for belt filtered tailings moisture reduction including assessment of tailings clay mineralogy, as well as mixed plant reject co-disposal verification and optimisation.CITATION:Li, J, Payne, D and Hooi, H, 2018. This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

The McPhee Creek bedded iron deposit is a recent discovery made by Giralia Resources NL (Giralia) in the northern Pilbara of Western Australia. The deposit lies 30 km north of the town of Nullagine along the southeastern margin of the East Pilbara Granite-Greenstone Terrane (EPGGT).The McPhee Creek area is located in the Kelly Greenstone Belt in the southeastern part of the EPGGT. The Archaean aged greenstone belt consists of volcanic and sedimentary sequences including the Warrawoona Group and the Gorge Creek Group. The McPhee Creek iron ore deposit lies within banded iron formation (BIF) rocks of the Gorge Creek Group. The structure of the McPhee Creek area is dominated by a northeast trending, upright synform (Sandy Creek Syncline) and associated folding that is truncated by northeast trending faults in the east. Iron ore mineralisation is predominantly stratabound and follows the dip of the bedding – however, in some areas, particularly in the southwest of the deposit, mapped steep to moderate dips of bedding planes are at odds with underlying fl at mineralised zones in drill sections. Zones within the deposit that contain substantial thickness of iron ore correspond to areas of complex folding suggesting structural control and iron enrichment in fold hinges. Petrographic analyses confirm mineralisation is goethite dominant and the deposit is strongly supergene enriched.Giralia initially identified iron ore potential in the McPhee Creek area through the presence of a small known channel iron deposit (CID) mesa. Giralia began exploration in 2008 by re-drilling a portion of the CID (subsequently named Crescent Moon) and reported a small low-grade Inferred Mineral Resource. Target generation in the wider area utilising Geological Society of Western Australia maps and Ikonos satellite images identifi ed strongly ferruginous outcrops associated with major structures along an 8 km long range located 2.5 km to the west north-west of the Crescent Moon CID deposit. In late July 2008, a total of 62 rock chip samples were collected during a helicopter supported sampling program conducted at McPhee Creek. Samples taken from haematite-goethite enriched BIF and canga zones outcropping intermittently over the 8 km length of the western and central areas of the prominent range assayed up to 63 per cent Fe. These zones represent the discovery outcrops and surface expression of the McPhee Creek main range iron ore deposit.Follow up sampling, geological mapping, bulldozing of access tracks and ramps and reverse circulation (RC) drilling commenced in September 2009. A maiden Inferred Mineral Resource was announced by Giralia to the Australasian Securities Exchange (ASX) on 15 December 2009.The current Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource at December 2010 stands at 260 Mt grading 56.2 per cent Fe, 0.12 per cent P, 6.7 per cent SiO2, 2.3 per cent Al2O3 and 9.5 per cent LOI at a 50 per cent Fe cut-off. McPhee Creek is one of the largest iron deposits found in Archaean BIF in the northern Pilbara.

Northparkes Mines commenced production in 1994 and the mine has significant reserves to allow operation into the future. There are a number of potential future concentrator feed sources with variable sulfide mineralogy and grades.In February 2012 a comprehensive flotation survey was conducted to allow mass balancing and evaluate the operation of the flotation circuit. A rudimentary, copper element only, unsized flotation simulator was developed to evaluate high level potential for optimisation and improvement. In 2013 this flotation model was expanded to produce a mineral based, floatability component model to estimate the effect of future concentrator feed source on metallurgical performance. This revised model allows various circuit configurations to be simulated to provide a high level blueprint for the long-term planning to maximise performance.This paper provides a review of the process followed to develop the model, including an analysis into the mineral floatability component model and its calibration against plant operations. Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. This paper discusses the technical and cost benefits of alternative data collection techniques used to collect lithological information, obtain laboratory testing samples and perform in situ testing. A comparison between diamond coring and sonic coring techniques is made using data from a recent geotechnical investigation for a final pit slope cut-back. The impacts of the coring method on laboratory strength testing results, material character testing and, ultimately, the mass strength parameters and subsequent slope design adopted are compared. The sonic coring method was chosen out of necessity and enabled the collection of tube samples of a clay unit of interest as well as bulk samples for material character and geochemical testing. The sonic coring generated unexpected degradation of clastic units, while cohesive clay-dominated units were recovered well. The likelihood that disturbance due to the coring method would result in lower than expected triaxial strength results was recognised ahead of time, with surplus samples collected and single-stage triaxial strength testing undertaken. This testing compared favourably with historic three-stage testing, where sample degradation occurred during the later stages. Material character testing of fine-grained, clay-dominated units was comparable with historic diamond core testing, while grain size estimates for more clastic units tended to be finer than previous results. The use of sonic coring over non-cored methods enabled the collection of material texture data, geotechnical properties and a full suite of geochemical analyses. This provided a comprehensive understanding of the lithological and geotechnical character of the rock and soil mass. A high-confidence geotechnical model was developed. The end result was the development of a slope design that was more aggressive than was previously designed (5° steeper inter-ramp angle), which has proven to be appropriate to the conditions following excavation. Basic principles of stack injection are outlined and supported by calculations of thermal, chemical and aerodynamic requirements of an ideal 4000 tpd furnace. Calculated results show that these requirements vary with conversion of FeO, and that best performance may be expected with XFeO = 1.0 for which calculated production is 6919 tpd and coke rate is only 211 kg/thm. Calculations are also presented for a cycled injection. Discussions show that stack injection is a good way of overcoming softening problems and meeting the demand for iron in a fluctuating demand situation when it exceeds the maximum capacity of a furnace.

Mining at the Tuckabianna Mining Centre in the Murchison district of Western Australia ceased in 1997, after the production of 550 000 ounces of gold at an average grade of 2.5 g/t from 22 separate open pits (Tectonic Resources, 2006). Like many historic mining camps in WA, Tuckabianna was considered exhausted of gold, such that an economic project could not be sustained on the existing resources. Since 1997, three separate companies have owned the Tuckabianna leases. Each of these companies completed minor exploration and some form of mining study to determine if mining could be sustained. All three companies concluded that the remaining resources were insufficient to support an economic project. Silver Lake Resources acquired the adjacent Tuckabianna, Comet and Moyagee projects in 2007 with a combined resource base of 693 000 ounces of gold in 11 separate deposits. In September 2009, Silver Lake commenced exploration in the Murchison targeting extensions to the main resources at the three project centres and completing targeted regional exploration across the lease holding. At the same time, a detailed evaluation of all historic drill data was completed and all resources re-estimated. This has culminated in the resource base increasing to 1.5 million ounces of gold in 20 separate deposits, with two new discoveries being made. In August 2010, a mining feasibility study was commissioned. Preliminary results from the study indicate that an economic stand alone project can be sustained for a minimum of five years. The ability to bring the remaining resource from a once unloved project into production is due to a number of factors: historically high gold price, combining adjacent projects into a single operation, evaluation of all resources regardless of size and grade, and well funded exploration directed to both resource extensions and new discoveries. Using the Tuckabianna Project as an example, this paper attempts to outline the strategy Silver Lake used to define the resources to justify the capital expenditure required for production, and give a summary of some of the successes and failures made as the projects progress towards mining. Examples of where being too rigid and over exuberant have resulted in less than optimal use of expenditure are used to high-light the difficulties in exploring in mature terrains. Evaluation of the success of a company’s exploration strategy at all scales from project acquisition to target selection is critical to the success of future project development. This paper has been part of that process for Silver Lake with some interesting discussions and insights being made. It is hoped that some of the points discussed can be applied to other projects to help achieve the best outcome from the assets available to a company.

The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.
