There is an increasing trend in the extraction and development of copper resources from complex deposits. These deposits pose mineral processing challenges, as they often contain low grade disseminated copper ore with high levels of impurities particularly arsenic. Although arsenic is a naturally occurring element, the concentrations of arsenic can be magnified by mining and mineral processing activities. Therefore, while arsenic has no significant market value, its presence in the ore deposit will have production, environmental and human health implications. The current talk of risk management as a separate discipline and management function is like earlier imposition of Quality Control (QC) as an overlay on shoddy production management. Risk management is vital, but is integral in the way we marshal our staff, make decisions, then monitor and review and make crucial secondary decisions. New leaders must not assume that hiring experts ensures good decisions. It is only the essential step one. The worst company I worked for had more expertise than the best. The difference was in culture and decision-making processes. Failed feasibility studies, persistent technical factions in a company that cancel each other, heaps of expert consultant reports piled up like a dump of bricks, even great but half-managers in large and small companies cancelling expertise at their disposal, are the worst manifestations. Just daily foul-ups are common even amongst smart people. We miners have made a great industry but are content to drift far below excellence, even where that word is bandied around. All the management literature and management courses will not right the situation û we have been sending budding managers to this good stuff for two generations and the effects are worthwhile but marginal. A few key ideals, ideas and slogans are not the way. These make inspiring books that work about as long as the Christmas spirit does in the real world. What we need is a coachesÆ manual and a standard of the essential package of culture and work processes that make excellence possible and show how to maintain it long term. It has not been written until now because most managers want to remain dilettante amateur managers without the discipline that creates excellence. First, believe excellence is possible and worth any effort; then commit to it.

Coal winning in the Latrobe Valley exceeds 45 mtpa uses a small number of Bucket Wheel Excavators and high speed conveyor systems. While this equipment offers many advantages in the production cycle, incorrect use can lead to low productivity and risks to the safety of the operators and equipment. The mining equipment is of high capital value and easily damaged when used outside the correct operating range. In the extreme case, this can result in total machine collapse, having major implications for personnel safety as well as production and costs. With an active productivity improvement program in the Latrobe Valley in the last two years resulting in a 50 per cent reduction of personnel, many experienced operators have retired. Mine management are facing the urgent need to rapidly train new operators to maintain high productivity levels and reduce the risk of accidents to personnel and high capital cost plant. With the assistance of the Central Gippsland College of TAFE a Certificate Level course has been developed for open cut operators. The course covers all essential training needs for the Latrobe Valley mines. The training is developed from National Competency Standards, allowing transfer of skills, and is flexible to suit other enterprises. It has been written for self-paced learning with the total job understanding, and to have competency-based learning outcomes, training tasks and assessments built-in to modules. With the introduction of this new training program, management is convinced that the element of risk within the mine will be significantly reduced. For these reasons it is an ideal training model for other enterprises.

Currently, social impact assessment (SIA) is used to determine social impacts across the life-of-mine (LOM) to closure. This paper draws on recently completed SIA reports from the Martha gold mine in Waihi and qualitative interviews in the community that explored post-closure options, to review the challenges mining companies face when engaging with iwi4 through the SIA process and what that may mean for closure planning. The Maori of New Zealand consistently lobby to have a distinct voice in resource management issues. This is in line with the evolution of indigenous participation in SIA globally and with New Zealand policies, not least of which, the Treaty of Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) makes provision for Maori self-determination with regard to natural resources. Land use for mining has been a source of conflict for Maori and mining can have profound cultural and social impacts on the Maori community, yet despite Treaty intentions their representation in SIA has been comparatively limited. With this in mind, the Waitangi Tribunal has released the Ko Aotearoa Tenei (Wai 262) report, which recommends far reaching reforms to laws and policies affecting Maori culture and identity including natural resource management. This landmark report seeks to move the Maori-Government relationship beyond grievance to partnership. Given suggested policy changes in Wai 262 and the risks of poorly conceived closure planning, it is timely to review where Maori currently fit into the SIA process. The findings of this research suggest that improvements to the outcomes of this process will require companies to act beyond compliance. The co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material (Co-Mix) with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retaining capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimise acid generation and metal leaching. When compacted, Co-Mix materials have low volume change characteristics with respect to total stress and matric suction together with high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures or a full depth waste repository. The theoretical properties of Co-Mix blends are investigated. The results of a laboratory program to characterise the physical and hydraulic properties of co-mixed tailings and waste rock are presented. Various ratios of tailings were blended with different waste rock materials. Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted at confining pressures ranging between 0 and 400 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-Mix materials was found to vary between 4 + 10-5 m/s and 5 + 10-9 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and confining pressure. These results together with other physical properties show excellent hydraulic and strength characteristics can be achieved for Co-Mix materials.

A technique for determining the recovery of attached particles across the froth phase in flotation that relies on measuring the rate at which bubble-particle aggregates enter the froth is used to investigate the selectivity of attached particles across the froth phase. Combining these measurements with those of other techniques for determining the froth recovery of attached particles provides an insight into the different subprocesses of particle rejection in the froth phase. The results of experiments conducted in a 3 m3 Outokumpu tank cell show that the detachment of particles from aggregates in the froth phase occurs largely at the pulp-froth interface. In particular it is shown that the pulp-froth interface selectively detaches particles from aggregates according to their physical attributes.

In mining and processing operations where minerals, high in pyrite and low in calcite/dolomite are processed, acid is generated, which needs to be neutralised. Ticor at Empangeni in South Africa (SA) produces rutile (TiO2), leucoxene (TiO2 plus iron compounds), titanium (Ti), zircon (Zi) and ilmenite (TiO2 plus iron compounds). Neutralisation is required in the processing plant where acid is leached into the wash water. This water needs to be treated to a quality suitable for re-use in the metallurgical process or to a higher quality to make it suitable for discharge into the Empangeni sewage system (SA). For re-use the water needs to be neutral and under-saturated with respect to gypsum while for discharge into the sewage system the sulfate concentration needs to be reduced to less than 500 mg/L (as SO4). Acid mine water is generally neutralised with lime. Disadvantages associated with lime are the costs and maintenance of the slaking equipment as well as hazards, associated with handling of the alkali. The cost of powdered limestone (CaCO3) in South Africa, a by-product, is 50 - 60 per cent cheaper than lime. A technology has been developed where limestone is used for neutralisation of acid mine water instead of lime. This development includes: Limestone handling and dosing system. A novel, robust system has been developed where waste CaCO3 from the paper industry is slurried to a constant density. A full-scale plant was constructed to evaluate its performance (Figure 4). The dosing system consists of an inclined slab onto which the limestone is stored and from where it is slurried into a make-up tank. The density of the slurry in the make-up tank is controlled via a loadcell that measures the weight of the tank (operated at constant volume) and activates/deactivates the spray of the recycle slurry onto the slab. Integrated limestone neutralisation/lime treatment process. In this process powdered CaCO3 is used for neutralisation and partial sulfate removal of acid leached from the coal washing plant. The sulfate concentration can be further reduced to below the saturation level of gypsum (ie 1200 mg/L) through gypsum crystallisation by means of lime treatment, resulting in metal precipitation (eg Fe3+ and Al3+). CO2- treatment for CaCO3 precipitation. The pH of the lime treated water can be adjusted to pH levels of 8.5 and lower using CO2. The CO2, generated during limestone neutralisation (Equation 2), can be captured and used in this stage of the process. The first two stages (limestone- and lime neutralisation) of this technology have been implemented on full-scale at Ticor to treat the effluent of the process. The constructed plant is 80 m3/hr and differs from coal processing plants by way of not containing Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the water. The CO2-treatment stage (Stage 3) will soon be implemented at IHM as part of a program to optimise the technology for maximum benefits.

Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.

Oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides is accelerated by the activity of acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microorganisms. The ideal biocide for controlling biocatalysed acid rock drainage (ARD) would be inexpensive, inhibitory toward sulfide-oxidising bacteria at low concentrations, relatively non-toxic toward non-target organisms, degradable in the environment outside the zone of application, stable and long-lived in the impacted environment, sufficiently mobile to penetrate into piles of waste rock or tailings, and effective regardless of the metal sulfides present. A potent agent for combating ARD that fits these criteria is the thiocyanate anion (SCN-). The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of thiocyanate in controlling or preventing ARD within several types of sulfidic waste rock and tailings. Results were evaluated within a context encompassing process water and solids management strategies employed at different precious and base metal mines. Sulfidic rock was treated with solutions of potassium thiocyanate and subjected to accelerated weathering tests in lab-scale humidity cells, trays, and columns. Certain tests also utilised solid phase copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) to evaluate a ærelease on demandÆ strategy. Leach solutions were analysed for parameters indicative of ARD including pH, redox potential, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, iron, and certain heavy metals. Two larger scale field tests were also initiated by personnel at separate mines using, in the first case, ore containing a pyritic component in large columns and, in the second case, waste rock containing base metal sulfides in lined pits. Humidity cell tests showed low concentrations of thiocyanate solution applied to pyritic waste rock could reduce ARD formation by 90 per cent or more compared to untreated controls, with the residual release of ARD components (eg sulfate, Fe, acidity) probably reflective of strictly chemical oxidation of the sulfides by molecular oxygen. Thiocyanate applied at a concentration of 22 mg/kg to waste rock from a base metal mining operation in large laboratory scale columns reduced acidity and sulfate release by 75 per cent to 80 per cent compared to untreated controls. This extent of reduction in ARD may not meet discharge water quality criteria, but has the potential to significantly reduce lime consumption and sludge production in a conventional neutralisation facility. The use of a solid-phase metal thiocyanate compound (CuSCN) at a dosage of 194 mg/kg pyritic ore resulted in the following per cent reductions in leach solution parameters in comparison to controls: sulfate (78 per cent), acidity (93 per cent), dissolved Fe (99.4 per cent), and dissolved arsenic (99.9 per cent). This compound has the further advantage of being relatively stable until needed, dissolving only in the presence of an acidic and oxidising ARD solution. If this line of investigation progresses favorably, it offers the possibility of an ARD prevention technique that may be applicable in some settings. Mine-site pilot scale tests with pyritic ore resulted in reductions in sulfate (56 per cent) and Fe, As (66 - 68 per cent). In sum, thiocyanate at relatively low concentrations dramatically reduced ARD from sulfidic rock in a simulated heap. The pilot test using waste rock containing base metal sulfides has begun only recently. A preliminary process design and cost estimate was made for fullscale application of thiocyanate to waste rock at a hypothetical gold mining operation producing 5000 tpd of ore and 10 000 tpd of sulfide containing waste rock. The combined capital and operating costs for the full-scale thiocyanate application facility were about $US 0.25/tonne of waste rock and $US 0.50/tonne of ore. Although thiocyanate is readily available commercially, it also occurs in process solutions associated with certain types of mining processes. Such solutions after selective treatment might be recycled to sulfidic waste rock or tailings, rather than being treated for thiocyanate degradation.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user's technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer's commercial specification may require weighing against the producer's practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.

The BHP Billiton Cannington mine uses sequential flotation to treat a silver, lead and zinc ore supplied from an underground mine. The final products from the process plant are a silver rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. Operational history of plant performance highlighted that the majority of valuable metal losses to final tailing occurred in the -5 ¦m fraction. Research completed on the flotation characteristics of this size fraction in plant feed resulted in the development of a split flotation process to improve the silver and lead mineral recoveries. Construction of a $A 9.5 million brownfield project to install the new split flotation circuit at Cannington was completed in July 2002. The circuit consists of three stages of cyclone classification to recover the ultra fine material to a final cyclone overflow stream, conditioning of this pulp to achieve optimal process conditions, and conventional rougher and three stage cleaner flotation to produce a silver rich lead concentrate. The rougher tail from the new circuit is recombined with the cyclone underflow streams and processed through the original lead-zinc flotation circuit. This paper discusses the circuit design, material properties, material selection for components of the circuit, operational practices and requirements to ensure the circuit succeeded in meeting production targets. The technology is subject of a number of patent applications including international application No PCT/AU02/00400.

A viscosity model has been developed for both completely liquid and heterogeneous, partly crystallised slags in the Al2O3-CaO-æFeOÆ-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic iron. The Urbain formalism has been modified to describe the viscosities of the liquid slag phase over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. The Roscoe equation has been used to describe the effect of presence of solid suspension (slurry effect) on the viscosity. The parameters of the viscosity model were optimised to describe large experimental data set in the low-order subsystems, as well as in the multi-component system. The computer package FACT was used for prediction of the proportion of solids and the composition of the remaining liquid phase. The model provides a good description of the experimental data (over four thousand experimental points) in liquid phase, and liquid + solid mixtures, over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. This model can now be used for viscosity predictions in industrial slag systems. An example of the application of the new model to slag cleaning and reduction smelting processes is given in this paper.

Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic constraints on hydrothermal fluid composition from the Pliocene Boyongan and Bayugo porphyry copper-gold deposits (southern Philippines ) reveal mixing of magmatic and sea water reservoirs as the hydrothermal system evolved. Magmatic-equilibrated fluids (d18O: +8.3ë to +9.1ë; dD: -61ë to -51ë) are represented by hypersaline brines implicated in copper-gold transport and deposition. These dominate the fluid inclusion assemblage in early comb-quartz (unidirectional solidification textures), miarolitic quartz, and in K-silicate-stage quartz-K-feldspar ¦ biotite veins. Fluids responsible for post-K-silicate alteration assemblages of pyrite-clay (illite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite), alunite and smectite are represented by low-moderate salinity two-phase inclusions in co-existing quartz. These are interpreted as mixtures of evolved magmatic fluids (d18O dD: -42ë to -20ë) with evolved Pliocene sea water (d18O: + 4.0ë; dD: +4ë). The isotopic evidence for sea water involvement in the hydrothermal system suggests that porphyry emplacement and associated diatreme formation could have occurred in a submarine setting. The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. Reagents used for batch flotation tests were Aeroxanthate-343 & 350, Dow Z-6, & reagent-4037 (from Benambra) as copper collectors; Na2SiO3 & Na2S2O3as gangue depressants; lime & HCl as pH regulators; and pine oil & MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) as flotation frothers. A Denver Sub A flotation cell of capacity 250 gms was used for the batch flotation experiments. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for copper assays and microscopy for selectivity and liberation studies. Melbourne tap water was used throughout the experiments. Unless otherwise stated, the following parameters apply to the flotation experiments: flotation impeller speed - 1300 rpm, pulp density during flotation- 22%, reagents addition - in 4 stages, total conditioning time for collectors - 8 minutes, total flotation time- 9 minutes. A variable quantity of copper mineral collector according to the test in question was added, then conditioned the pulp for 2 minutes. The froth was removed by hand, scraping the full length of the cell at constant depth every 10 seconds. No frother is required for this copper tailing flotation. Four concentrates were collected after addition of collector and conditioning at 2,4,6 and 9 minutes. The pulp volume was maintained at a constant level to yield a constant froth depth.

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

In panel/block caving mines, large amounts of information are collected at the operations. This information includes grades and extracted tonnage, fragmentation, lithology, design of stopes and main infrastructure, geotechnical information, overbreak progress, seismicity, numerical modelling and many other mine variables. To improve the reliability of the production plan it is required to integrate the mine data into one platform. In this paper, the logic of a new technological platform is presented for analysis, modelling and design in panel/block caving mines. The platform includes an acquisition system for mine data and geotechnical information, a back-analysis module for calibrating statistical models and a module of visualisation of the results. The application and benefits of the platform is illustrated for mining induced seismic risk for panel/block caving mining operation. Of all of the processes in the mining cycle, blasting has the greatest impact on the efficiency of both mining itself and the initial stages of ore processing. The cost of blasting can be readily accounted for, but the true benefits of an effective blasting operation are seldom measured or reported. This means that blasting is seldom optimised in terms of its overall economic impact on an operation. Blasting operations have evolved according to the environment provided by mine management. Most operations seek to minimise the unit cost of each component process (overburden removal, blasting, excavation and transport, crushing or grinding) without recognising the impact that blasting performance has on subsequent activities. The creation of æcost centresÆ or æmanagement unitsÆ that isolate blasting from its downstream impacts reinforce this trend. Modern blasting technology is regarded as sophisticated by virtue of the mechanical design of the drills, the chemistry of the explosives and the flexibility and reliability of modern blast initiation systems. However, blast performance is controlled by the nature of the rock mass and there is generally an inadequate appreciation of how blast designs should be tailored to suit different rock mass conditions or to meet different blasting objectives. Most operations utilise a limited suite of standard designs without routinely tailoring designs to suit the actual conditions at hand or the objectives of each blast. Mining operations would benefit from tackling the following specific challenges:What is the appropriate target performance for blasting operations to generate the maximum economic benefit for the operation as a whole? How should designs be configured to suit the changing rock mass conditions and operating constraints? What compromise (if any) should be allowed from the ideal to assist conflicting scheduling or other operational requirements? How can blast performance be measured and reported to provide appropriate guidance to future operations? These challenges can be tackled through the process of æblast engineeringÆ. This paper discusses the potential impact of blasting performance on the economics of mining operations and the author argues that very considerable benefits over and above those currently being achieved could be realised by improving the routine engineering of mine blasts. The paper then explores how the industryÆs failure to recognise the economic importance of blasting has resulted in the engineering of blasting operations receiving less management and technical support than is appropriate. Finally, a simple approach to the engineering of routine blasting operations is described as an example of how these challenges can be tackled.
