The Palaeoproterozoic Leveäniemi iron oxide apatite (IOA) deposit of the so-called Kiruna type is currently mined by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (publ.), commonly known as LKAB. The mineralogy of iron oxides, ie magnetite, hematite, maghemite, and goethite is more complicated compared to the neighbouring and more famous IOA deposits of Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. Furthermore, the mineral chemistry of the iron oxides in the Leveäniemi deposit is also slightly different. Especially, the information about the deportment of titanium and vanadium in iron oxides and distribution in the deposit is essential since they can have an impact in the steelmaking process. For this study 50 samples were selected from exploration drill cores and investigated by optical microscopy, FE-SEM-EDS and EPMA at LKAB and the Geological Survey of Finland. Investigations revealed that magnetite is the predominant iron oxide mineral with secondary hematite being the second most abundant mineral. Primary hematite, maghemite, and goethite seem to be less abundant. It should be noted, however, that this investigation focused on magnetite which currently is the only mineral with economic value. Vanadium occurs as a substitution element in the crystal lattice of iron oxide minerals in the Leveäniemi deposit and not as discrete stochiometric vanadium minerals. In the investigated samples vanadium concentration in magnetite ranges from 0.12 to 0.32 wt per cent V2O3 with higher concentration in the southern part of the deposit. Contrary, titanium does not substitute for iron in the crystal lattice of magnetite or secondary hematite (less than 0.018 wt per cent TiO2). It either occurs as tiny inclusions of titanium oxide minerals or as exsolution lamellae of ilmenite in magnetite. The spatial distribution for titanium in the deposit, however, remains unknown. Furthermore, results of this study indicate that alteration of primary magnetite to secondary hematite has had no significant effect on the trace element chemistry of these minerals in the Leveäniemi deposit.

The article presents results of thermodynamic calculations and laboratory studies, focusing on the cobalt behaviour during oxidative smelting of copper-nickel mattes. The compositions of the studied solutions are related to the products formed during the second stage of the converting process of copper-nickel matte at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant (NMP) of MMC Norilsk Nickel company. These sulfide products typically contain from 1.5 to 12 wt per cent of iron. The obtained experimental results and thermodynamic calculations indicate that adjusting the CaO ratio to increase the proportion of CaO or complete replacement of SiO2 with fluxes containing CaO leads to a significant increase in cobalt recovery rates in the matte phase (with an iron concentration of 2.5 wt per cent) raising them from 30 per cent to 45 per cent. Meanwhile, the recovery rates of copper and nickel remain constant.

The operation of the cyanide-sensitive Mintek/TB1 kegold electrode was studied in the laboratory, with regard to equilibration time and drift, the effects of pH, stirring, salinity, dissolved oxygen, zinc and copper(I) ions. Methods for valid calibration in the range 20-600 mg(NaCN)/L and pH values in the range 9 - 12 in the absence of copper were also studied. Increasing the salinity beyond a threshold of 40 g(NaCI)/L improves calibration and measurement. The sensitivity is 91 mV per decade change in the concentration of ionic cyanide, and output is reproducible to within 10 mV with attention to the factors listed above. However, salinity of 40 g(NaCI)/L also sensitises the electrode to interference by copper(1) ions. This copper sensitivity seems capable of saturation, suggesting a research strategy for possible remedies.

The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). The major technological advances of the last 30 years have profoundly reshaped mining practices. Machines keep getting bigger while productivity continues to increase and manning levels drop. These trends will continue and the introduction of breakthrough technologies will continue to accelerate, driven by a continued focus on lowering the cost of production, improving the productivity of workers and machines, and ensuring safer working environments. At the same time, global consolidation of mining companies has impacted on technology development in a range of ways. There are many potential technologies being proposed, some already operating in Australian mines. The automation of underground load-haul-dump (LHD) trucks for example, continues the process of removing workers from the most dangerous operating environments. Global positioning systems fitted to draglines, fibre optic communication channels, and 400 tonne trucks are only some examples of what lies ahead. However, where we need to return focus is to the technology of management û which is also one of the two key interrelated themes of this keynote address. Have we, as an industry, adequately been able to keep up with technological advances? Are our management systems as competent as the machinery we employ? The other key theme is the processes of globalisation and consolidation. What are the impacts on our industry? What are the implications of these processes, particularly for the ways in which we manage our people? My paper is divided into several components:some comments on the coal industry and the dramatic restructuring we have seen in recent years; in the context of this restructuring, an overview of my company and its evolution; my views on the role of contractors; some comments on the consolidation also occurring in the mining machinery and equipment, technology and services sectors; some observations on two major areas of technology û drill and blast; and trucks, shovels and excavators; the implications of consolidation and new technology for our employees and management; and finally some comments on research programs.

Prior to mine development, exploration drilling within the Luise Caldera on Niolam Island encountered gold mineralisation to the northwest of the main Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. This mineralisation was referred to as the Kapit orebody, and ten diamond drill holes were subsequently completed over the area to investigate its economic potential. Several significant mineralised intercepts were returned. These were interpreted using the orebody model developed for Lihir at that time which invoked a strong horizontal control to mineralisation. Additional consideration was given to the elevated geothermal temperatures encountered, the proximity of the mineralisation to the ocean, and its perceived depth below sea level, resulting in the Kapit area being given a low priority for follow up investigation. As a result, no further work was completed over Kapit until recently. The Kapit orebody was the target of an intense diamond drilling programme during 2002/2003. Data from this latest round of drilling has significantly improved understanding of the mineralisation and associated geology. The significant orebody now delineated at Kapit substantially differs from past interpretations, and the latest data has upgraded its economic potential. A resource estimate and other critical studies completed in 2003 enabled an updated reserve statement to be issued in February 2004 including the Kapit mineralisation for the first time. Total Probable Reserves at Kapit stand at 25.2 million tonnes (Mt) at 5.28 grams of gold per tonne (g Au/t), for a total of 4.3 million ounces (Moz) of contained gold.

In the process of primary copper smelting in flash smelting furnace (FSF), the ratio of iron to silica (Fe/SiO2 mass ratio) primarily determines the slag viscosity and magnetite formation. Viscous slag does not only cause difficulties in daily operation, such as in tapping, it also increases the copper losses to slag. Thus, keeping the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio at the desired level is an important aspect of FSF and slag cleaning furnace (SCF) operation. In this study, the improvement of the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was conducted in two steps: First, the optimal Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was derived based on thermodynamic data. Based on this analysis, appropriate control limits were determined. Second, this range of favourable Fe/SiO2 mass ratios was implemented into operation by an advice-based control system, which suggests the addition of silica based on the analysis of SCF slag. As this approach was successful, the same advice-based control system principle was adapted for the coke addition to the SCF. After testing the new advice-based control for several months, the production data confirm the predictions by thermodynamics: since the prediction was implemented as an advisor, the copper and magnetite content in SCF slag is significantly reduced and viscous slag is reported less often by operations.

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multi- hearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80% metallization) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally 3% carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500 ¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

Mining is a global industry. The conference is a good example of this, as itÆs jointly organised by professional associations from Canada, Australia and South Africa, and has attracted speakers and delegates from around the world. I commend the organisers for their initiative. I am pleased to be asked to participate in this panel û although I would hasten to add I see myself as perhaps an informed observer rather than an expert. It wonÆt be news to most in this room that AustraliaÆs mining sector is booming. As one of the most productive and diversified mineral regions in the world, this activity is also something that has not escaped the attention of CanadaÆs largest mining companies! This means that I follow what is happening in the industry and more specifically what might be occurring here. Two-way investment between Canada and Australia stood at $9.8 billion in 2005 with Canada as the seventh largest overall investor in Australia with $8.22 billion in investments. The majority of this investment is by Canadian minerals and metals companies. In recognition of the importance of Canadian investment in this sector in Australia, I maintain close contact with our companies. By way of example, in the past two months I spent a week in Western Australia visiting Perth and meeting with companies for example, like Teck Cominco and LionOre as well as seeing various Barrick Gold operations in Kalgoorlie. I attended the opening of AlcanÆs new Asia Pacific Headquarters in Brisbane in August and just two weeks ago was in Cowal, NSW for the opening of BarrickÆs new mine there. Having met with BHP Billiton in Vancouver, IÆm equally aware of active Australian mining interests in Canada. This is not designed to indicate how active I am but rather to demonstrate the dynamism in the mining industry and the diversity of Canadian mining interests in this country and Australian interests in Canada.

The key issue which determines the use of imaging for explosives and mining research is the question - `What information will I gain by using imaging technology?' This paper will address that question from the point of view of a researcher and cameraman working in industrial imaging and photography. The paper will establish a common set of reference standards for high speed imaging and photography which researchers can apply when deciding which type of imaging technology is appropriate. It will present an overview of current image analysis technologies and practices in use across a range of appropriate scientific fields and draw lines of commonality of approach between these fields and the field of explosives and mining analysis and research. Further to this, the paper will examine the different technologies from an image quality reference point, ease of operation, cost, and reliability parameters. Finally this paper will present an argument for the hybridisation of established and new technologies which could provide a more beneficial approach to the use of imaging as a tool of research and analysis in the explosives and mining industries. This will include a novel approach to high speed filming and analysis in the field which should deliver high quality images in a time frame which is more appropriate to urgent action and solutions.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite -bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (e.g. Kiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (e.g. Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidized fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelized influx of a specialized high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

The evaluation of ore deposits consumes much effort, cost and time, hence research work must aim to minimize these inputs with no loss of accuracy. The present study is devoted to assess the optimum conditions and methods of calculations which give minimum costs of ore exploration. An area of (a x a) where "a" is the zone of influence of the semi-variogram, i.e. (2800 x 2800 square metres) located within the Abu Tartur plateau is the subject of the intensive study. The distances between boreholes are varied ie. a/4, a/6, a/8 and a/ 10 respectively. The average ore grade (G), thickness (t) and relative ore reserves (tG) are calculated by four methods. The results indicate that at a distance equal to a/5, the inverse distance squared method gives the best results. These parameters save about 50 percent of the cost of exploration with a map accuracy greater than 90 Percent.

A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risks of slope fail- ure inherent in steeper slope angles. However, no formal framework for a proper analysis existed to date. This paper describes the results of the past four years' effort in which a formal eco- nomic analysis framework was developed and tested through a case study. This framework, in essence, consists of the availability of tested procedures and com- puter programs. The procedures as well as the programs are divided into two broad functional categories; (1) the first category related to assessing the economic benefits and costs associated with various pit slope angles and (2) the second category that determines the overall financial impact which the assessed benefits and costs exert to the mine operator's overall economic stature.

Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

Thiourea has been recognised for a long time as an acid-stable complexant for gold. Generally, the use of thiourea has been shown to exhibit enhanced leaching kinetics compared to cyanide but suffers the disadvantage of excessive reagent consumption. Thiourea leaching is particularly com- patible with the extraction of gold from refractory ores. This is due to the need for an oxidative pretreatment to liberate the gold. Such pretreatments typically result in the production of an acidic residue. The application of novel thiourea leaching technologies to the extraction of gold from a bioleached pyrite concentrate was investigated. The interac- tion of leach variables with thiourea consumption and gold extraction was established. An economic assessment of thiourea leaching was compared with conventional cyanidation. The results indicated that gold leaching of the bioleached residue using thiourea compared very favourably with cyanidation.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

As a result of the globally increasing consumer use of electronic devices, it is expected that pressure will increase on the supply chain of precious metals. Hence, recycling of these electronics becomes increasingly important, as well as optimising the current processes. One major issue in metallurgical processes is the amount of metal that is lost into the slag. This metal loss is inherent to the production process and therefore, additional processing steps such as slag cleaning may be required. Slag cleaning can be done in electrical resistance furnaces where heat is produced using the Joule effect, making the slag’s electrical conductivity an important operating parameter. Since slags are ionic liquids, the electrical conduction happens via the movement of ions which is called ionic conductivity. However, within the presence of transition metal oxides, a second mechanism of conductivity occurs as electrons are able to hop from one transition state to another, which is known as electronic conductivity. As ‘FeO’ is a common slag component in the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry, both mechanisms are present, but their proportions vary with the respective amounts of the two forms of the multi-valent ions and hence, with the oxygen partial pressure. The goal of the present study is to develop an experimental set-up and methodology for measuring the electrical conductivity of synthetic SiO2 – CaO – AlO1.5 – ‘FeO’ slags at various oxygen partial pressures.
