The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.

The piezocone penetration test (CPTu) is one of the primary screening tools used by the mining industry to evaluate whether tailings are susceptible to liquefaction (static or cyclic). Liquefaction analysis using the CPTu is influenced by the fines content of the soil, and most CPT screening tools empirically use the behaviour type index (Ic) to correct for fines. The issue with this approach is that such empirical relationships have been developed using data collected from natural soils and their applicability to different tailings deposits needs to be studied. In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning to develop a site-specific model to estimate fines content of tailings using gamma piezocone penetration testing (GCPTu) measurements. The results are then compared to the fines content derived from the soil behavior type index (Ic) proposed by Robertson and Wride (1998). A dataset of paired GCPTu and laboratory results were compiled and a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was employed to calibrate a model to estimate tailings fines content from in-situ GCPTu data. We calibrated GCPTu data to geotechnical 75 μm fines content measured in the laboratory. The geotechnical fines content is the fines content as a percentage of solids. The development dataset was comprised of paired GCPTu-laboratory results collected in 2009-2019 from a mining area with predominately clay mineral and quartz sand tailings. Results show that the developed model predicts the geotechnical 75 μm fines content of the studied deposits with 7.8% error. The Ic based method estimates the fines content with 31% error. Evidently, the Ic method is not applicable to the studied tailings deposits. It is appreciated that many tailings fines do not contain clay, and that the success on this program may not be repeatable everywhere. However, the authors wish to point out that the application of site-specific machine learning algorithms may be used to significantly improve empirical geotechnical parameters.

Drilling and blasting are an essential part of most mining operations, and are commonly major operating cost centres. The effectiveness of blasting can have a significant influence on all subsequent activities, and hence overall operating costs. Drilling and blasting systems must be compatible with the overall mining method, to minimise total costs and ensure operational efficiency. Selection of suitable equipment and techniques requires an understanding of the total operation, plus current skills in specialised technologies. This paper examines the contribution of drilling and blasting to total costs, including the balance between capital and operating costs. The use of computer modelling is discussed, to demonstrate how blast performance and costs can be predicted and alternatives analysed. Case studies illustrate how cost savings can be made in operating mines, and alternative systems evaluated to optimise new projects.

For a large scale open pit mining and concentrating operation, on a low-grade disseminated ore body, it is possible to set an approximate lower bound on economically feasible operating scales and an approximate upper bound on economically desirable scales in a relatively straight forward manner. The optimum scale ofplanned operations, with respect to the objective ofmaximisation ofthe net value ofthe orebody, will have to be arrived at by iterative planning runs, but it may be expected to lie close to this upper bound. The effects of infrastructural costs and of the addition of a risk premium to the cost of capital, to form the discount rate for planning purposes, are considered theoretically and by worked example. It is concluded that a perceived special, unsystematic, risk should not be accounted for by the use of such a risk premium as this is inducive to placing a greater amount of investment capital at risk, for no greater return-rate to investment.

This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

Separation of Nickel and Cobalt from Manganese, Magnesium and Calcium by Synergistic Solvent Extraction - From Batch Tests to Pilot Plant Operation The synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of Versatic 10/LIX63/TBP was used for the separation and purification of nickel and cobalt from synthetic laterite leach solution after iron removal. Very encouraging results were obtained for separating nickel and cobalt from manganese, magnesium and calcium. In batch tests, the organic composition of the synergistic system was optimised and very large synergistic shifts for nickel and cobalt were observed. The ?pH50(Mn-Co) and ?pH50(Mn-Ni) values were as large as 1.65 and 2.40, respectively. The extraction and stripping kinetics of nickel and cobalt was fast. Semi continuous extraction tests were conducted with a pH profile of 5.5/6.1/6.5 in three stages at 40¦C. The nickel and cobalt extractions reached 99.9 per cent with only 5 mg/L Ni and <1 mg/L Co left in the raffinate. With two stages of scrubbing, only 2 mg/L Mn and less than 1 mg/L Mg and Ca were left in the scrubbed organic solution. With two stripping stages, the stripping efficiencies of Ni and Co reached over 95 per cent. A fully continuous pilot plant operation was conducted successfully for 280 hours. With an O/A ratio of about 2 and a pH profile of 5.5/5.8/6.0/6.3 for the four stages EX1/EX2/Ex3/EX4, both nickel and cobalt were almost completely extracted. Using a pH profile of 5.4/5.0 for SC1/SC2, the manganese scrubbing efficiency was over 96 per cent. Using three strip stages, over 98 per cent Ni and 99 per cent Co were stripped with only 64 mg/L Ni in the stripped organic solution. The nickel concentration in the loaded strip liquor reached 83 g/L, resulting in a ?Ni of over 28 g/L. The chemical stability of the system was also assessed over 12 weeks under proposed industrial operating conditions. Operation exclusively under strip conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in LIX63 oxime half lives of 1.1 and 2.1 years, respectively. Operation exclusively under extract conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in oxime half lives of 0.26 and 0.82 years, respectively. Losses of Versatic 10 were less than four per cent.

Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. THE area dealt with in this paper is included within a radius of about 3 miles of the Poimena township. Several thousand tons of tin have been won from this field, and probably £200,000 spent in exploiting it.PREVIOUS LITERATUREThe field has been reported on by Government geologists on four occasions and several ,articles on it have appeared in the mining journals. With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

Rb-Sr measurements on total-rock samples of granitic rocks from the Mount Isa region have confirmed the existence of two periods of granite-forming activity. The Kalkadoon Granite, together with the Ewen Granite and possibly an older phase of the Sybella Granite, has been shown to belong to the earlier age-group at 1760 m.y.; the Wimberu Granite and a pegmatite associated with the Sybella Granite have been dated at 1540 m.y. The initial Sr ratio suggests that the Wimberu Granite may be new material of deep-seated origin.Further Rb-Sr measurements have confirmed previously-reported K-Ar results upon biotites from these rocks, whilst showing that, in this metamorphic terrain, biotites have lost varying amounts of radiogenic Sr and Ar, and therefore yield ages which are younger than the true age of the second event.

THIS paper is the outcome of experiments carried on and experience gained. at the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company's tailings plant at Waihi, New Zealand. The plant was erected to treat accumulated tailings which had been discharged into the Chinemuri River by the Waihi batteries.The Chinemuri River is a common sludge channel for all mining debris, tailings, and ashes from the power plants, the last being the cause of occasional high residues, which gave so much trouble to the management. The tailings were dredged from the bed of the river into barges by means of a Pohle air lift, the power being supplied: by a 13 b.h.p. Tangye oil engine driving an air compressor and a centrifugal pump. The sands were elevated from the barges by bucket-belt elevators over screens, to eliminate large particles and rubbish, into storage hoppers, and from there fed direct into four C. Judd Ltd. tube mills.The method of treatment was fine grinding in a weak cyanide solution, agitation in B. and M. tanks, filtration with turn-over vacuum filters, and precipitation with zinc shavings. The comparatively high values of the residues in gold gave a great deal of trouble, 'and it was not until repeated experiments were carried out that the cause of the trouble was located. FOR rapidly marking in geological and topographical features on parish plans, the author has used the Veeder cyclometer with very satisfactory results. A simple Veeder cyclometer, usually retailed at cycle depots at 4s., is fixed to the axle of the front wheel of an ordinary bicycle. The cyclometer is desigued to read in miles and tenths of miles, which are recorded through gearing actuated by a striker on a spoke of the bicycle wheel engaging one of the vanes of the cyclometer once every revolution.By using 80 strikers the reading would be in chains and tenths of chains; therefore the use of 8 strikers gives the reading in chains, utilizing all the figures. The cyclometer is designed to be placed on the right-hand side of the bicycle, and takes up a minimum of space, being only about the size of the top joint of the thumb. With some makes of cycles there is insufficient clearance, so the cyclometer must then be placed on the left side, and the 8 strikers made to engage the top vanes, as shown in the sketch (Fig. 1).Very accurate readings can be obtained by this instrument. The work described herein is the opening phase of an extensive system of underground excavation undertaken under contract with a Malayan authority.The specifications called for the lining of all tunnels in earth or broken rock with circular segmented cast iron lining, similar to that of the London tubes, and it is the installation of these linings which it is proposed to discuss.Owing to the long deferred delivery quoted and the obvious need for speed of access to the internal installation, it was decided to defer driving the completed circular section and substitute two small timbered headings.These could later be opened out in turn to full section and lined without prejudice to traffic, since both of them had access to the internal workings.NATURE OF ROCKThe rock series through which the circular sections were driven consisted of:(a) A wide zone of intrusive porphyritic granite, consisting generally of orthoclase phenocrysts in a ground mass of micro pegmatite. This area showed advanced weathering, varying from a stage showing slightly tinted kaolin containing approximately 20% of small boulders to one of ultimate decomposition to pure kaolin;(b) A narrow zone of weathered augite diorite, consisting of rock masses of a maximum weight of some 100-150 tons, isolated by clay seams up to 1 ft. 6 in. in width.The whole area was in a state of quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium, which resulted in heavy pressure immediately after excavation. Freshly broken faces would appear to be quite solid but, within a few minutes, would commence to sweat and "slab off" under pressure and, unless support was placed promptly, the whole face would burst out and run from above. Mucking was slow, owing to the plastic nature of the clay and the ease with which it puddled into slurry.In zone (b) a good deal of trouble was experienced because of the fact that the somewhat heavy blasting necessary tended to cause movement of the large rock masses. Subsequent scouring out of the supporting clay bands by the waterflow permitted settlement of the ground on to the timbers and many reinforcing sets were therefore required.The timbering of the pilot headings and its relation to the cross-section of the circular tunnels is shown in Fig. 1. The projection of operating costs for mining, processing, and other site operating costs is an exercise which can be fraught with considerable peril. Not only are the physical characteristics of each mineral property unique, but a range of other factors will influence the consultant's approach to compiling cash flow estimates. This paper details some of the techniques used in estimating operating costs for use in order-of-magnitude cost studies and feasibility studies, and describes how to avoid common areas of difficulty. A series of examples relating to open pit gold mining and processing cost estimates illustrate these problems, and various corrective methods are described. The mining and treatment processes, and their associated cost elements, are followed in sequence of operation from on-going ore delineation through to disposal of the product. In addition the problem of assigning management, administration and overhead costs along with taxation allowances is addressed. Of critical importance is the application or possible misapplication of accrual procedures to the cost elements. In many cases such misapplication can introduce more pronounced errors with projects of short duration, such as the typical open pit/C.I.P. gold operation commenced in the last decade. The importance of providing verification of estimates depending upon the standard of the cost study is also investigated, and opinion is provided upon the minimum levels of verification necessary at various stages. Finally, the amalgamation of the various individual cost elements into a coherent whole is reviewed.

Decline shafts are an attractive option to both new and existing mining operations where there is a need to access an inclined orebody deposit via on-reef development so as to generate a return in the shortest possible time. There are many different technologies that are available to transport men, material and rock in incline shafts. This paper focuses on the applicability of two hoisting technologies for decline shafts, namely endless and direct rope systems. The pros and cons of each system are reviewed. A common concern with direct rope haulage systems is the possibility of generating slack rope during deceleration. This paper illustrates the issues involved in designing a system so as to avoid the possibility of slack rope. In conclusion, the key factors relevant to the selection of endless or direct rope haulages for a particular decline application are reviewed. In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

The area, A, under a gamma-ray log that passes through a horizontal bed given by: A = gl/k. Here is the equivalent concentration of U3O8 in the body, l the thickness of the body, and k the calibration factor or sensitivityof the logger. The area is independent of the logging speed or logger time constant.This relationship, together with the first moment about the maximum of the log and its value there suflicient to determine the thickness, position of the centre of the bed from the log maximum and the concentration of U3O8.Numerical results obtained from artificial and field data show that the computed results arc as good as those obtained by methods such as the inverse filter technique and the iterative method. The present method yields results that arc easier to feed into an ore reserve data base.

The discussion submitted by Drs. Stillwell and Edwards is at once helpful and gratifying to the authors. Their contribution deals with two phases of the problem-(I) an additional suggestion for the relative solubility of galena and marmatite, and (2) submission of an alternative explanation for the greater leaching of the Northern ore-body. With the first we agree in principle, and herewith present recent data which will help to substantiate the idea, though the mechanism is not believed to be as simple as indicated by Stillwell and Edwards. Concerning the second suggestion, the original explanation put forward. in the paper is held to fit the facts more closely.In view of the influence, as shown by Garrells' paper,in which the presence of Cl' ion may have upon the relative solubilities of lead and zinc, it is perhaps worth noting that Broken Hill mine water carries a higher content of Cl' than has been reported from many of the other lead-zinc districts.Since our paper was published, an analysis of water issuing from the newly-opened Northern ore-body on the 2,600-ft. level has been made (12/1/43).
