This paper deals with two separate case studies investigating the froth phase performance and characterisation of two industrial rougher/ scavenger flotation circuits. Froth phase performance was quantified using a mass balance approach to estimate froth zone recovery. Measured characteristics of the froth phase included frother solution concentration determined by gas chromatography, and the time taken for an equilibrium froth sample to decay to one-half of its original froth height. The latter measurement is referred to as the æfroth half-lifeÆ and is strongly linked to froth stability. Special methods and techniques developed to preserve frother in solution and to measure froth half-life are briefly described. The frother type in the first case study was a mixture of straight and branched alcohols, whilst the frother type in the second case study was a mixture of alcohols, aldehydes and triethoxybutane. The first case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a low-grade ore containing only a small fraction of floatable copper sulfide minerals, while the second case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a higher grade complex sulfide ore containing significant quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and pyrite. It was found that froth zone recovery of valuable mineral generally decreased down-the-bank of the two industrial rougher/scavenger circuits. Moreover, decreases in froth zone recovery significantly limit the overall cell recovery of valuable mineral achievable from the plant scavenger cells. However, the decrease in froth zone recovery could not be linked to the removal of frother from the pulp solution to the concentrate product in the preceding rougher flotation stages. Measurements of residual frother in solution suggested that, approximately, only five to ten per cent of the added frother was removed into the rougher/scavenger concentrate, with the remainder appearing in the scavenger tailings. This finding suggested there was apparently adequate frother in solution in the scavenger stages.

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

The heavy media cyclones at Argyle Diamonds are subjected to extremely abrasive service conditions and have been the subject of a development program from the time the first ore was treated in the AKl processing plant. In the past ten years the cyclones have been re-engineered from a standard DSM design, in which some components would only last four days, to the current Argyle design in which the minimum component life is 175 days. Development has focused upon the elimination of turbulence in the cyclone and combating unavoidable abrasion through the use of appropriate wear materials.

For the last decade Australia has been the leading exporter of both steam and coking coal. In the ten-year period 1989 - 1998 steam coal exports increased by 93 per cent and metallurgical coal exports increased by 50 per cent. However, profitability of the steam coal sector has been disappointing. The coking coal sector, especially the hard coking coal segment, has fared better but its profitability was more because of its ability to maintain relatively high prices rather than its inherent productivity. Until quite recently the Australian coking coal sector was widely expected to be able to maintain this comfortable state without undue effort for the three major æpartnersÆ; the companies, the State Government and the unions. But coking coal could now be heading down the path followed by steam coal that ends with long-term over-supply and, despite steady improvements in productivity, poor profitability. Steam coal entered the ænewÆ era of long-term over-supply some years ago. Over-supply was due to the rapid increase in production in Indonesia, often from new mines and Australia. AustraliaÆs production rise was underlain by the apparent belief that the best way to lower costs was to increase production. In the first couple of years costs didnÆt fall much but the additional tonnage was sold at lower and lower prices into the spot market. By mid-1998 the difference between the contract price set with Japanese utilities and spot sales was often in excess of $US12 per tonne. Japanese contract prices and tonnages have since fallen significantly. Steam coal has moved from being a product to being a commodity. Any profits are due more to the low Australian dollar rather than inherent mine productivity. Seaborne coking coal trade has been dominated by Australia, Canada and the USA, with the USA becoming less competitive. Unfortunately, when the Queensland capacity expansion was well down the pipeline, the Asian financial crisis occurred and the Japanese economy entered what appears to be a long-term recession. Contract prices fell 18 per cent, tonnages decreased and some mines have been reclassified as supplying lower priced coking coal. The paper analyses past and expected future trends in labour and mine productivity, rail freight and FOB export port cash and total costs of the Australian steam coal and coking coal sectors and discusses the market outlook for Australia. The future economic viability of the industry is analysed and discussed in the light of the rapidly changing global environment.

It must be stressed that the following comments are offered only to assist mineral industry professionals in understanding the issues involved in personal liability. The information and views expressed herein are not intended to be a comprehensive guide or definitive statement of the law and they should not be regarded as a substitute for specific advice for individual situations. Readers should consult their own legal and other professional advisers before applying the content of this paper to their own particular circumstances. It is hardly news that work in the mining industry is governed by a complex regulatory and legal system which is constantly changing, but few realise just how directly they can be affected and become personally liable for any breaches. These may result in civil or criminal proceedings and personal assets are at risk. Owners, company directors, managers and now employees are at risk, together with consultants, contractors and suppliers of equipment or consumables, as well as government inspectors. They are liable for their personal decisions to act (or failure to act) in managing operations or carrying out directions, as well as for the actions of others under their control. This paper identifies the areas where such individuals in the open pit mining industry in Australia face the risk of personal liability and measures which can be used to minimise the risk or which can be used to make out a defence to legal action which could arise. There have always been a myriad of Commonwealth, State and Local Government laws and regulations with which to comply, and now international protocols are being used as a basis to impose greater obligations on all people. Once, the `corporate veil' gave some protection to the individual, but today there is negligible protection from the full force of the law. Not only are there various types of law enforcement officers, but public interest groups, shareholders, customers, suppliers, creditors etc may litigate. This paper is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of the provisions of all the legislation or case law where individuals can be held) personally liable. These areas would include environmental, pollution and heritage law (including Aboriginal sacred sites); occupational health and safety (including workers' compensation) law; trade practices and fair trading law; contract law; corporations law (including the requirements of the Australian Stock Exchange [ASX] and Australian Securities Commission [ASC]); industrial relations law; anti-discrimination and sexual harassment law; taxation (including superannuation trustee) law; and the Common Law. The focus is on the following areas of regulation, which are outside the usual experience of those in the open pit mining industry (the Mining Acts and Regulations are specifically not dealt with here): ò Environment Law; ò Trade Practices Law; ò Occupational Health and Safety Law; and ò Corporations Law.

The southern Attiki peninsula is a very interesting area from an environmental point of view. The port and the city of Lavrio is situated at the east coast of the peninsula with about 10 000 inhabitants and there are also a few villages in the vicinity. The south-eastern part of the peninsula hosts the famous Lavrio mines which exploited the silver bearing orebodies of the area for more than 25 centuries. As a result, soils around the city of Lavrio are polluted with high heavy metal loads. The area is also of archaeological interest, as there are well preserved remnants of ancient mining and processing plants and archaeological sites. Soil samples collected from an area of approximately 120 km2 around Lavrio were analysed for their metal contents and the spatial distribution of the concentrations of ten selected elements were estimated from these data sets. The spatial data analysis and transformation capabilities of Geographic Information Systems, combined with extensive mining and geological data, helped the authors to identify the extent and causes of metal pollution around Lavrio.

This paper presents a summary of tools and methods used for geotechnical assessments and monitoring systems at block caving mines. A critical review of these tools is given based on the authorÆs experience in block caving operations. The reviewed tools include cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, geotechnical monitoring systems, numerical stress analysis and others. Some of these tools have been developed under certain circumstances in particular mines and experience shows that their applications under different geological and mining conditions have often been difficult. Examples from block cave mines are also utilised in this paper to illustrate the importance of the further development of these tools, whilst possible improvements on these tools are also suggested.

Multiple operating points for mine fans are a problem that fan and mining engineers must constantly be aware of in mine/fan systems. In a single-fan system, unstable conditions can be avoided by restricting fan operation to the "normal operating range." When mine fans are operated in parallel, the situation becomes a little more complicated. Multiple operating points are more often encountered and the fan user must be aware of these multiple points to have a suitable set of operating conditions. However, for fans in parallel, the engineer can plot the combined characteristic in a relatively straightforward manner and thus can avoid conditions that would cause instability in the mine/fan system.

During the post war era, the requirements of the "Third" World for modern civil works, energy and industry, coupled with an insistence that these capital installations are understood and controlled by indigenous people, have crea- ted a demand and flow of technology from those countries with well developed skills. Thus has grown a real trade in technology - an activity in which consultants play an important role. An indication of the magnitude of this trade is given, together with an outline of some of the special problems. Australia is shown to be dis- advantaged and has been slow to offer the incen- tives to consultants which other countries offer.

The Mineral Resources Act 1989-90 came into force on 1 Septem- ber 1990 and the Second Schedule of this Act set out the Savings, Transitional and Validation Clauses to this legislation. The Second Schedule gave rise to a number of interesting situa- tions however due to the fact that the time set aside to attend to these matters (the prescribed period) has now expired, with the exception of the points raised below, most of these situations are now history and are of no relevance. The Transitional provisions of the Second Schedule provided for a three month "prescribed period" in which certain actions were required to be undertaken to ensure tenements granted or applied for under the repealed legislation transitioned into the framework provided by the Mineral Resources Act. This Second Schedule of the Mineral Resources Act highlighted a number of anomalies which are still worthy of mention and are listed below.

New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and northern- most New Zealand lie on a long, narrow, ridge system, the Norfolk Ridge System, which is sit- uated in the centre of a geologically complex region of ridges and basins between Pacific Basin oceanic crust and continental crust of Australia (see Eade, 1987).

The limitations of the conventional practices, and their effects, in prospecting for and in the evaluation of alluvial gold deposits are briefly reviewed. Geophysical prospecting methods have demonstrated their complementary role in the delineation of deposits by reducing the number of boreholes which are primarily of a 'probing' type. Larger diameter boreholes, although more expensive on a linear basis, are much cheaper on a volume recovered basis. The need to have sufficient volume as well as number of samples is stressed. Classical statistical methods are not appropriate for such deposits as there is sufficient structure, or spatial correlation, to require the application of geostatistics. Quite reliable semi-variograms, but not in all cases, of the spherical scheme have been obtained. Subsequent kriging has, to date, been confined to unworked deposits: retrospective estimates to compare to production have not therefore been produced. However, the technique shows promise but indicates a considerably greater borehole density (of the conventional diameter) may be necessary to produce confident estimates. Used in conjunction with larger diameter boreholes, a lesser borehole density may be sufficient, through radical reductions of the sampling error.

This paper describes the design of the steel fibre reinforced precast concrete (SFRC) segmental lining for the intake and discharge tunnels for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. In addition, the key design requirements and design methods for the lining of these 2 km long, 2.8 m internal diameter tunnels, including structural, durability and maintenance requirements are discussed. Details of the segment configuration and erection process are presented along with information on the manufacture and trial testing of the concrete for the segments. The paper also gives a brief introduction to steel fibre reinforced concrete behaviour. Construction of the tunnels commenced in April 2007, and the authors believe this is the first application of this technology in Australia.

During overburden blasting operations in dragline pits, coal edge losses along the lowwall edge of the new pit are often experienced. In tonnage terms, losses can be significant. With the thick seams at Callide Mine, 20,000 tonnes of coal can be lost along a 600 metre pit. In addition to the immediate dollar value of the coal, replacement of this coal (from which overburden has been removed) will be from higher ratio and higher cost pits in the future. Unit costs of production for the remainder of the coal uncovered in the current pit increase. Experiments involving variation of blasthole inclination and/or amount of standoff on the front row of blastholes have given no significant improvement in the coal edge loss control.

Only a few complex real options can be valued using closed-form equations, such as the Black and Scholes formula, because these algorithms are restrictive and prevent the construction of practical project evaluation models. Although a binomial lattice method paired with the ærisk-neutral probabilityÆ provides an easier and flexible modelling of exploration and mining projects, it has limitations when projects are complex, long-lived and influenced by the interplay of various market and private uncertainties. In order to overcome these limitations, modern decision tree software using dynamic programming capability can be used for real option valuations. This is a powerful computational tool in which the impact of various sources of uncertainties can be differentiated, so that the optimal decision path can be explicitly displayed visually. There has been significant academic controversy surrounding whether different real option (RO) valuation methods would lead to different real option values (ROV). This paper, using a realistic copper mining example, demonstrates that as long as the same degree of subjectivity and consistency are used in different real option valuation methods, they yield the same result. This conclusion is valid irrespective of whether the cash flow volatility generated by various sources of uncertainties is handled in an aggregated or in an explicit and differentiated manner. This paper compares two choices for an investor either to æbuy now and developÆ a project or to enter into a ætwo-year option to purchaseÆ after the proponents have developed it. It also shows how significantly different net after-tax operating cash flows may be generated by these different choices on the same underlying asset represented by the project. This is due to the difference in the amount and timing of the relevant capital investments affecting the depreciation and amortisation charges and as a consequence, the income tax paid. "In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. What is the best method of splitting a sample from a reverse circulation drill rig? How important is it to obtain a correctly split sample? What is the impact of an incorrectly split sample? These are just a few of many questions asked daily in the mining industry with regard to sampling. Modern sampling theory is well described in the literature in texts and is taught in short courses throughout the world, however little has been published on the relative performance of sample splitting devices used in the field. This paper compares the performance of the Jones tiered riffle splitter with a cone splitter manufactured by SGS Metal Craft in Western Australia. The testwork was carried out at AnglogoldÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. Mineralisation at Sunrise Dam is hosted in a structurally complex framework of shear zones with dips that range from steep (70¦) to shallow (25¦). The deposit is characterised by significant amounts of coarse gold, which presents a challenge in sampling, analysis and grade estimation. The three major areas where sampling errors can occur are in drilling, sampling, sample preparation and analysis. Sampling errors attributable to drilling and sample preparation often far outweigh the errors made at other stages in the process, however historically most effort to identify sampling errors has concentrated on the laboratory and analytical procedures. Splitter design and cleanliness can have a large impact on sample collection and preparation. Splitter performance was tested with respect to sample weights, particle size distribution, and gold grade consistency. The aim was to determine if each particle has an equal probability of being sampled, the resulting sample has integrity, and if any segregation problems occurred. The cone splitter was found to provide the best split in terms of particle size distribution, with no apparent size bias. Duplicate samples had more comparable masses than those provided by the riffle splitter. Most importantly, the cone splitter gave less grade variability between duplicate samples than the riffle splitter. Testwork also confirmed that, like the riffle splitter, the cone splitter must be oriented vertically and the design of the rig or cone splitter trailer should accommodate this requirement.

Within the mining industry computers have made their most significant impact with 3D design, visualisation and resource modelling/ optimisation. Recently, the application of computers to data gathering and accounting functions has also started to reap benefits. These two areas of application cover the beginning and end of the mining process. There has been limited use of computers on the middle section, the actual mining process. This is interesting when considering the relative proportion of overall mining costs that this section produces. There is a certain amount of irony in the lack of mining application software for developing accurate budgets compared to the systems/software then used to review performance against budget. Computers have been used extensively in the manufacturing industry to design, model and simulate the manufacturing process. This has not been extended to the mining process. But, we all strive to have an open pit that replicates a manufacturing plant û smooth, efficient, optimal production. If we could model mining operations with the confidence of plastic box makers we would reduce risk by an order of magnitude, improve planning and focus on value drivers. Cost û benefit analysis would be easy. The extrapolation of manufacturing to mining process models is difficult. The variables in the manufacturing process are fewer in number, have low volatility and are highly predictable. The time between a box falling on a conveyor belt and falling off is very consistent. Mining is quite the opposite. It has large numbers of variables, some of which are unpredictable and volatile. The time to fill an excavator bucket could vary by 30 per cent and the frequency distribution is unlikely to be a mathematically simple normal distribution. Further, each of these variables can be distorted by one-another û they are interrelated. The mining process is a disjointed flow of parcels whereas manufacturing is a controlled continuous feed. A loaded truck might join a ramp and follow a slow water cart up. This is the equivalent of a localised voltage drop on equipment in a manufacturing plant. The manufacturing plant is quite likely to rapidly recover to full capacity. Whereas the slow truck might throw the mining fleet cycle out of balance for hours û trucks queuing at the ROM bin and so on. A mining process simulation has been created that addresses these mining variable issues to produce a highly accurate model of the open pit mining process. The number of uses for such a model is growing rapidly as it is being utilised for a variety of projects within the industry. This paper discusses the need for and application of mining process models.

Australia contains a variety of iron ores, differing in grade, chemistry, size distribution and genesis. While a proportion of this ore is used world-wide as blast furnace lump, much of the material mined is high grade fines, requiring agglomeration (usually sintering) before blast furnace reduction. Sintering studies initially concentrated on the production of ferrous material of high iron content, coarse size and sufficient cold strength. In recent years research involving pilot plant sintering, precise test procedures and mineralogical analyses has focussed on the additional sinter properties of hot strength and reducibility. Aspects of mineralogical studies applied to iron ore sintering are described.
