"In this study, the vapour phase reduction of titanium tetrachloride conforms to the traditional Kroll chemistry, but employs argon as an inert carrier gas and requires a higher reaction temperature of 1150°C to 1250°C. A vapour phase reaction is advantageous because titanium is the only condensed phase present, and the metal can be collected free of magnesium or magnesium chloride, in marked contrast to the titanium sponge produced by the conventional Kroll process. The yield of metallic titanium from the reaction was determined as magnesium additions ranged from 36% to 168% of the stoichiometric requirement. Yields of over 99% were obtained when an excess of magnesium was present. Although the collection efficiency was low, metallic titanium was collected at the reaction site, where all other species were present as vapours. Magnesium and chlorine concentrations in the collected titanium were less than 0.3%.IntroductionA proposed method (Curlook, 1987) for titanium production has been investigated as an alternative to the conventional Kroll process (Kroll, 1940). The advantages of the new process include a simplified means of recovering the product metal, and a potential for lower overall energy consumption and greater product purity. "Radium is selectively leachable from uranium ores with various types of lixiviants. Among a number of lixiviants tried on Midwest Lake uranium ore, KCl provided the highest per cent of radium extraction (60%-65%). Leach results further confirmed that a certain portion of Ra is not amenable to KCl leaching. More than 99% of the dissolved radium could be removed by treating the KCl leach liquor with barite or with radium selective complex resin (XFS-43230 resin of Dow Chemical Inc.) or by precipitating as RaBaSO4. Uranium leachings from the Ra-preleached uranium ores indicate that radium leaching prior to uranium may be applied as an extension to the conventional or alternative (i.e. acid chloride) leaching process of uranium ores in order to yield environmentally acceptable tailings (in terms of radium in the solids).IntroductionAt present, radium is considered as an environmental issue, particularly for uranium ore mine mill operations, rather than a commercial commodity. Radium was once a highly priced commodity ($180/mg during the first great war) but now it hardly has any commercial value. Its principal applications were in the field of cancer treatment and in the manufacturing of lwninous dials for watches. Nowadays readily-available synthetic radioisotopes are finding applications in place of radium.Because of scarcity and high toxicity, further commercial applications have never been explored.Radium was first discovered and extracted from uranium ore by P. Curie, M. Curie and G. Bement in 1898. Radium is widely distributed in nature but in exceedingly minute quantities. It is one of the daughter products of uranium or thorium and its maximum concentration is 3.3 x 10-7 part/part of U(21). Because of its short half-life (approximately 1620 years) in a geological time scale, its occurrence in nature as a distinct mineral is most unlikely.The details of the original radium leaching process developed by the Curies and Bernont are in the literature. This process essentially involved the roasting of uranium ore with caustic. carbonate followed by sulphuric acid leaching. The precipitated RaSO4 and BaS04 were treated with boiling Na2CO3 to convert them into the corresponding carbonates which later were dissolved in HCI. RaCI2 and Ba02 were separated and concentrated from the chloride liquor by fractional crystallization. But, in the course of time several modifications were made or proposed to the original process. Regardless of the process employed 226Ra extraction from the uranium ore was seldom better than 90%, and further as much as 20% 2URa loss took place during the concentration and purification process."

"Advanced radiation resistant oxide dispersion strengthened steel (ARROS) is being developed as a fuel cladding tube material for future nuclear reactor system applications. The research activities consist of advanced radiation resistant ODS steel development and fabrication technology development of ODS steel structural components. One candidate material with a chemical composition of (in wt%) Fe-10Cr-1Mo-0.5Mn-0.1V-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3and was selected as representative materials, and this material was named as the advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROSTM).On the basis of this ODS steel composition, an optimized fabrication process of structural components such as plates, sheets and tubes has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot/cold working, and heat treatment processes. These R&D activities are expected to contribute to the realization of ODS materials in the future.INTRODUCTIONA sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is being developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) with a view to economics, safety, reliability, and sustainability. The prototype Gen-IV SFR with a capacity of 150 MWe is under design, and this prototype reactor is scheduled to operate from 2028. For a commercial SFR system application, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high creep strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures (Jeong, 2014). Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS)steel is one of the most promising structural materials because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density, which is extremely stable at high temperatures under a neutron irradiation environment for a prolonged operating period(Kim, 2016). As the first step, several batches of ODS steel were designed and the candidate samples with a 2 kg scale each were fabricated by mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling processes. The mechanical properties of these samples were evaluated. Up to now, two candidate materials with chemical compositions of (in wt%) Fe-10Cr-1Mo-0.5Mn-0.1V-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3 was selected as representative materials, and these materials were named as the advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROSTM).The next step was to optimize the fabrication process of the ARROS compositions for in-core structural components such as the fuel cladding tubes of a SFR. An optimized fabrication process of fuel cladding tube with a composition of ARROS has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot consolidation, hot/cold working and heat treatment processes. Joining technologies of the ODS steel tubes is being developed using solid-state welding such as magnetic pulse welding, friction stir welding and diffusion boding. It is expected that the development of ARROS will contribute to the realization of a commercial SFR with high economics and sufficient safety in the future. In this paper, the study of fabrication process of ARROS structural components is introduced."

STEEPROCK LAKE (Figure 1) lies about two miles north of Atikokan, a village approximately one hundred and forty miles west of Fort William and one hundred miles east of Fort Frances on the Canadian National railway. The possible presence of hematite beneath the waters of Middle arm was inferred by early geological investigators (1890-1903) from the dense hematite float found on the southerly shores of this portion of the lake (1). A dip-needle survey of Middle arm, undertaken in the winter of 1930-31 by J. G. Cross, indicated two areas of high magnetic attraction which Mr. Cross thought might be due to magnetic iron oxides associated with possible hematite bodies. Bedrock could not be reached by the ineffectual hand-drilling so courageously attempted, and further work was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that Mr. Jos. Errington, of Toronto, convinced of the possibilities, determined to support Mr. Cross to the extent of several thousand feet of drilling. During the winter of 1937-38, holes Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 13 were put down (see Figure 1). The first four of these holes demonstrated that the areas of magnetic attraction outlined by the dip-needle survey east of the Narrows and southwest of Elbow point were due to ash rock (2). As a result, Mr. Cross decided to investigate the bordering areas of low magnetic attraction and selected a location near the high ferruginous lime (3) point in the northeast of Middle arm. Dense, hard hematite beneath approximately 350 feet of water and clay was struck in the first hole, and, before the end of the winter's drilling, hematite had been encountered in holes Nos. 6 to 13 along a straight line 700 feet in length (see Figure 1). In the meantime, the Steerola ( 4) Exploration Company had been formed to continue development and already, in the spring of 1938, W. D. Neeland, the Company geologist, had come to the conclusion that the most probable location for possible hematite was at the ash-lime contact. Accordingly, during the summer, drilling was continued off-shore in holes Nos. 15, 25, and 27 (see Figure 2) toward possible hematite bodies inferred by Mr. Neeland.

A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily -defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased. CERTAIN materials, of which iron is one, are so reactive that they cannot be zone refined in any known container without becoming contaminated. For such substances, the floating zone method ( 1) may be used. In this method, the specimen is supported vertically in an inert atmosphere and the molten zone supports itself by its own sur-face tension. The method was first applied to silicon (2) and has since been used for other reactive metals such as zirconium and titanium. Pavement condition assessment is an indispensable constituent in maintaining roadway infrastructure. Current practices for pavement condition assessment are labor intensive which introduce subjectivity in pavement rating and are time consuming. Automated methods rely on full 3D reconstruction of the pavement surface which introduces high equipment and computation costs. This paper presents a methodology for detection of patch type distresses in asphalt pavement images. This method uses filtering and histogram equalization for clearing and enhancing the image accordingly. It continues by applying the morphological process of closing, along with some rules based on the characteristics of a patch when captured in an image, to finally detect the area it occupies. Criteria for area, length, and width of a patch as seen in an image are taken into account to decide whether a probable patch is actually a patch. The method has been implemented in C#. The preliminary experiments demonstrate it produces promising recognition results

"Manalta Coal Ltd. 's Vesta Mine will supply Alberta Power Limited's 740 MW Battle River Generating Station with 1 128 000 tonnes of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal in 1983. Mana/ta Coal Ltd. and Alberta Power Limited are in their seventh year of a 31-year coal supply agreement. With the exception of localized topographic highs where three coal seams are mined, the Vesta Mine is primarily a single-seam mining operation. Vesta's comprehensive programs of mine planning, preventative maintenance, reclamation, and employee relations make it an efficient and a well run operation. Introduction The Vesta Mine, located in east-central Alberta approximately 300 km northeast of Calgary, supplies sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to Alberta Power Limited's 740 MW Battle River Generating Station. The coal reserves and principal stripping equipment are owned by Alberta Power Limited. Manalta Coal Ltd. owns and operates the additional mining equipment and support facilities. Coal production is from a single pit, 3.5 km in length. Both single and multi-seam operations are encountered in the active pit. In 1983, production is anticipated to increase to I 128 000 tonnes from 906 000 tonnes in 1982. The additional tonnage will be achieved by operating 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The following sections briefly highlight historical, geological and mining/reclamation aspects of the Vesta Mine. Figure I illustrates the location of the Vesta Mine in relation to the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. History Coal mining for domestic use began near the turn of the century in the Vesta Mine area. Initially, small underground room-and-pillar operations were dominant. As equipment technology advanced, surface strip mining replaced the underground methods."

Production of advanced linepipe steels with strength levels of 685MPa (100ksi) and higher requires excellent control of runout table cooling to produce the desired final fine-grained microstructures, which may include acicular ferrite. Cooling is exerted on the runout table by applying water jets onto the hot surface of the strip and heat is removed from the steel by forced convective boiling. The associated boiling mechanisms are complex and include film, transition and nucleate boiling. A pilot-scale runout table test rig has been built to systematically study boiling heat transfer from a moving steel plate by employing industrial scale headers. Experiments were conducted using test plates moving at speeds between 0.3 m/s and 1.4 m/s. The plates were cooled down from 850°C to temperatures below saturation by a single water jet supplied through an industrial size circular nozzle. Based on these experiments heat fluxes were determined and further used to develop improved runout table cooling models.

"The mines in the Bancroft area of southeastern Ontario, a few kilometres west of the town of Bancroft, are in Faraday and Cardiff Townships. Three companies, known as Canadian Dyno Mines Limited, Macassa Gold Mines Limited (Bicroft Division) and Madawaska Mines Limited (formerly Faraday Uranium Mines Limited), with plants capable of handling a total of 4,()()() tons (3,629 tonnes) of ore a day, were at one time in production. A fourth company, Greyhawk Uranium Mines Limited, operated a small mine whose ore was shipped for custom treatment to the nearby Faraday mill. Canadian Dyno Mines Limited ceased operations in June 1960. In June 1963 the Bicroft Mine was closed and a year later Faraday closed because of contract completion. But in 1975, Faraday (now called Madawaska) was re-opened but closed again in 1982. During 1959, the peak year, these four mines produced an estimated 1,100 tons (998 tonnes) of uranium precipitates, which represented nearly 7 per cent of Canada's output for that year(Fig. 1).The deposits occur in pegmatitic granite dykes in a region of high-grade metamorphic and metasomatic rocks. Uranium distribution is usually controlled by the distribution of mafic minerals, particularly hematite and magnetite, and by late fractures. The best visual indicators for uranium concentration are hematite staining in the pegmatite, followed by the amount of mafic inclusions or crystals. The Bancroft area orebodies are the only known deposits of the general pegmatitic class in Canada that contained economic deposits of uranium. The principal radioactive minerals are uraninite and uranothorite. By comparison with many other pegmatitic occurrences, some of the ore bodies are unusually large, persistent in depth and relatively rich in uranium minerals. At the end of 1981, total ore reserves were estimated at 1,500,00 short tons (1,360, 000 tonnes) averaging 0.11 % U3O8."

There are currently two operators producing oil from the surface-mineable portions of Alberta?s oil sands (Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Suncor Inc.) and two other companies are proposing to enter the industry (Albian Sands in 2002 and True North in 2004). Tailings from the two current oil sands plants contain approximately 220 000 tonnes per year of recoverable TiO2 and approximately 80 000 tonnes per year of recoverable zircon. This represents approximately 6% of the world?s TiO 2 consumption and approximately 9% of the world?s zircon production. With the commissioning of plants by Albian Sands and True North, and the announced expansion of plants by Syncrude and Suncor, it is expected that these tonnages could quadruple in the next ten years. All of these operators have at least 50 years of reserves even at these expanded production rates. The occurrence of heavy minerals in Alberta?s oil sands has long been known and is well documented in the literature. There have been a number of attempts to produce market-grade products from this resource and the results of this work have been quite mixed. Typically, researchers have used the normal mineral dressing techniques of the industry and have found the mineral assemblage does not respond to these techniques all that well. This has led to the widelyheld suspicion that there must be some difficult metallurgical problems associated with this resource. There are three main problem areas that have created difficulties for previous researchers: 1) The bitumen coating on the sand grains; 2) Secondary mineralization such as pyrite, siderite and calcite 3) A high proportion of aluminosilicates (approximately 25%) that have the same gravity, electrostatic and magnetic properties as other minerals in the heavy mineral suite. Recent work by Lakefield Research shows that these problems can be largely overcome with some novel approaches. The bitumen can be removed by washing with a solvent in the presence of a demulsifier. The pyrite can be removed by flotation. And the titanium and zircon minerals can be separated by selective flotation followed by conventional electrostatic and magnetic separation.

"The Davy McKee combined mixer-settler (CMS), is a liquid-liquid contactor, which has been commercially applied to the recovery of uranium from dilute sulphuric acid-bearing leach liquors. CMS differs from most other solvent extraction systems in that the mixing and separation of the phases is carried out in the same vessel.IntroductionTypical solvent extraction plants for the recovery of uranium operate at organic to aqueous feed flow ratios of 1 : 2 to 1 : 30. Because it is beneficial to mix the organic and aqueous phases at an organic/aqueous (O / A) ratio of between I : 2 and 2 : I there is incompatibility between the over-all and operating O /A ratios.Conventional mixer-settler designs require an external recycle of the minority flow which results in the possibility of over-mixing, increased settling requirements and entrainment losses. Other workers have approached this problem in terms o f enhanced sett ling and this has been partly successful.Davy McKee's approach involved a radical rethink of the principles of liquid-liquid contact and separation.Description of CMSThe CMS has the important advance that the required mixing O/A ratio can be achieved without external recycle and is not affected by the O /A ratio of the feeds. Three zones co-exist within the CMS unit-a central mixing zone and upper and lower separation zones. A pump impeller on a draught tube is installed within the mixing zone and baffles are installed above and below the mixing zone. "A variety of reagents are utilized in coal preparation, but aside from performing their desired function relatively little is known about the behavior of these reagents within the processing circuits. Where exactly do reagents go once dosed? In this paper, we present preliminary results of partitioning studies on frother (i.e., MIBC) and collector (i.e., diesel) chemicals commonly used in coal flotation, and examine implications for water management (e.g., in closed-loop systems). Additionally, we discuss the usefulness of such data in predicting environmental transport and fate of chemicals – which is currently a top priority for industry.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of coal preparation is to upgrade mined coal into more valuable products. Since coal is primarily used as a fuel source for electricity generation, product specifications are typically contracted to minimize unwanted constituents that detract from the overall heat value (e.g., ash and moisture) or that add to environmental pollution or other problems like corrosion at a power plant (e.g., sulfur) (Pitt & Millward, 1979). Failure to meet specifications results in a financial penalty for the coal producer (Szwilski, 1986), and thus preparation processes have evolved to simultaneously optimize recovery of valuable “clean” coal with rejection of mineral matter and moisture. In addition to advancements in equipment and circuitry, development and application of various chemical reagents has dramatically improved the performance of coal preparation processes.Contemporary preparation plants typically include multiple circuits that can be categorized by the size of particles they process: coarse, intermediate, and fine/ultra-fine (Figure 1). Coarse and intermediate circuits generally rely on size classification and gravity separations (e.g., dense-media cyclones), and do not require significant chemical reagents. However, fine and ultra-fine circuits often use froth flotation to separate coal from impurities, which requires chemical additives (Table 1). The primary additives include collectors, which coat the surface of the coal particles to render them (more) hydrophobic and thus more likely to attach to air bubbles and float; and frothers, which aid in the formation and stability of the froth that will accumulate the floated coal particles. Modifiers are also commonly added to flotation circuits to regulate pH in instances where coal or impurity characteristics may change water chemistries (Laskowski, 2001). Following flotation, coagulants and flocculants are often utilized in solid-liquid separations (i.e., dewatering or clarification) for coal products, and for tailings slurries prior to their disposal in impoundments. Coagulants function via double-layer compression1 to bring colloidal particles together, while flocculants promote bridging between the grouped colloids – and the combined result is enhanced sedimentation (Wills, 2006). Defoaming or anti-foaming agents may also be required to avoid fouling of dewatering operations."

After the formation of a concentration gradient of SiC within C-C composite, either zircon or mullite thin films were coated on the surface by sol-gel process. Oxidation resistance tests of as-prepared composites with a couple consisting of a ceramic thin film and a SiC-gradient were then carried out in air at the temperature range from 600 to 1600°C. By the coating of zircon with a thickness of 1.5 µm, a pronounced oxidation resistance was observed; the mass loss by oxidation was almost negligible at 1000°C and one hundredth of original composite at 1400°C. In the case of the coating of mullite with a thickness of 1.0 pm, the marked improvement in oxidation resistance over the whole temperature range examined, from 600 to 1600°C, was found with the combination of a SiC-gradient and a mullite thin film

"Ni-based superalloys have been replaced in the last low pressure stage of jet turbines for aircraft by titanium aluminides. In order to improve the properties of these Ti-Al alloys and extend their usage deeper into aircraft engines grain refinement by inoculation has been investigated. Borides are the most common inoculants for Ti-Al alloys, however they form brittle particles which are detrimental to the final properties of the alloy. Inoculants manufactured from a Ti-Al alloy with refractory metal additions were proposed to alleviate the issues arising from inoculation with brittle particles. An alloy was chosen which had less than 10% lattice mismatch with the alloy of interest (Ti-46Al) to maximize efficiency. Initial experimentation showed a decrease in as-cast grain size by a factor of 2 between the inoculated and non-inoculated samples along with an absence of the brittle particles found with boron inoculations. Investigations into the interaction between the inoculants and the melt were also carried out to better understand the inoculant size distribution and efficiency upon solidification.INTRODUCTIONTitanium aluminum alloys are an interesting material for aerospace applications. Their high temperature oxidation resistance and high specific strength make them particularly promising (Kim & Dimiduk, 1991). Recently, titanium aluminides have replaced nickel based superalloys in the last low pressure stage of the GEnx turbine engine. In order to increase their usefulness in turbines their properties must be improved for high temperature (>800oC) applications. Grain refinement is one method to improve the properties of a material, however current methods of grain refinement of Ti-Al alloys by inoculation have significant drawbacks. A new method of inoculating Ti-Al alloys by using Ti-Al alloys with small refractory metal additions (Nb, Ta) has been developed to avoid the drawbacks of current methods while still being effective grain refiners."

Of four main gypsum areas in the province, commercial production has only come from Falkland and the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys of southeast British Columbia. The Windermere deposit in southeast B.C. has been the major producer since /948. Gypsum and anhydrite from the Falkland deposit is used principally in cement-making at Kam/oops. GYPSUM deposits in British Columbia are known from four different areas: the southeast part of the province in the proximity of the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys; Forgetmenot Creek astride the British Columbia - Alberta boundary near Intersection Mountain; Falkland; and O'Connor River north of Haines . To date, commercial production has only come from Falkland and the southeast part of the province. Gypsum deposits of southeast British Columbia occur in the Burnais Formation of Devonian age. Outcrops of gypsum and numerous sinkholes indicating its presence are scattered over large areas of the Stanford Range. Several properties have been examined by industry in both the recent and more distant past. Significant production is reported from only two deposits. The Mayook deposit, active from 1926 to 1929 and from 1947 to 1954, produced approximately 95,000 tonnes of gypsum. The Windermere deposit, which has been active since 1948, is operated by Westrock Industries and has produced more than 6.8 million tonnes of gypsum. The Burnais Formation is composed principally of well bedded, finely 'laminated gypsum but also contains thin lenses of black fetid limestone and dolomite. Part of the Formation consists of breccia with angular carbonate clasts in massive, coarse grained gypsum. In several exposures, the Formation appears 10 be from 200 10 400 m thick, of which more than 75 Industrial Minerals in Canada per cent is gypsum . In the Stanford Range reserves mineable by quarry methods are estimated to be approximately 450 million tonnes.

"IntroductionBasal Proterozoic quartz-pebble conglomerates are found both west of Elliot Lake, in Duncan, Jarvis and Aweres Townships, north of Sault Ste. Marie and to the east and northeast of Sudbury, Ontario. Locally, while well packed and pyrite-rich, they carry little to no uranium. Locally, they carry gold. These features generally are ascribed to variations in the source areas of the rocks.In two other areas of Canada, similar basal Proterozoic units contain quartz-pebble conglomerate beds with uranium.Sakami LakeLocation and HistoryThe Sakarni Lake uranium deposit is found in a narrow, northeast-trending, Archean greenstone belt located 95 miles southeast of Fort George, on James Bay, and 240 miles north of Matagami, Quebec (Fig. 1).The deposit was detected by Inco in 1971, during an airborne EM survey which carried a newly developed Inco spectrometer system flown at 450 feet. Ground investigation, in 1972, resulted in the discovery and sampling of quartz-pebble conglomerate which yielded assays as high as 0.19% U3O8.Extensive field exploration was conducted between 1972 and 1975. Sixty-five diamond drill holes, to a total of 13,969 metres, served to define the extent and economic potential of the conglomerates which extend over a total strike length of about eight kilometres."

"Historically, alot of jarosite was found in the leaching residue when leaching indium from secondary zinc oxide materials. The reasons for the formation of indium bearing jarosite were theoretically analyzed. The influence of controlling the acidity and the addition of reagents on the indium leaching yield during secondary zinc oxide processing was investigated. In order to increase the leaching yield of indium, a measure of controlling the creation and destruction of jarosite was proposed. The production data shows that the leaching yield of indium was increased from 60 to 96%, and the content of indium in leaching residue simultaneously decreased from 900g/t to 100–200g/t when implementing such controlling measures.INTRODUCTIONIndium does not occur as independent minerals in the earth’s crust and is mainly associated with complex sulphide minerals. Specifically some sphalerites can contain as much as 900g/t of indium. Most indium is recovered from by-products of copper, lead or zinc metallurgy. Therefore, the research on the recovery of by-products in non-ferrous metallurgy is important(Sinclair et al, 2006). The main technologies used for this objective in China include: •,pre-neutralization-reduction-precipitation indium process(Yu et al, 2008), •,countercurrent oxidizing acid leaching process and sulphation roasting-water leaching process(Cao, 2005), •,oxygen pressure acid leaching of zinc concentrate-P204 extraction process(Yang et al, 2006), •,doubleacid leaching-solvent extraction process on lead dross from a reverbatory furnace flue dust(Liu, 2003),•,an acid leaching-solvent extraction process on smelting ash(Zhouet al, 2005). Although high pressure and extreme conditions can be used to improve extraction from high iron bearing indium residues(autoclave processing), mild extraction with lower cost and lower environmental impact are preferred.This paper describes both how the indium extraction using mild conditions in a secondary zinc circuit was quite low and, how through XRD and chemical analysis jarosite formation was found as the main cause. The paper then proceeds to discuss a method for improving the leaching yield and the application of this method in industrial practice."

Nearly all aluminium smelters are increasing the potline amperage to achieve higher aluminium production. In some instances the higher amperage operation has a significant negative impact on shortening the lifetime of aluminum electrolysis cell cathodes due to loss of the protective sidewall cryolite ledge freeze and too rapid penetration of the cell bottom refractory lining by cryolitic bath components due to the higher temperature isotherms. Thus Cathodes require careful thermal modeling of the cathode relining designs and improved refractory materials to allow greater heat loss from the sidewall to preserve a stable sidewall ledge freeze at higher amperages, and the selection of optimum refractory barrier materials to control the penetration and reaction of bath into the cathode bottom refractory and insulation lining. This requires an understanding of the reaction mechanisms and product formation for molten NaF enriched bath and alumino-silicate refractories. It is desirable to use dense, low porosity refractory fireclay firebricks, or similar materials with a sufficiently high silica content to promote the formation the mineralogical phase albite, NaAlSi3O8, that significantly increases the viscosity of the melt which slows the diffusion of reactive species in the melt and thereby retards further bath penetration.

Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.

Adaptive Processing as proposed in geometallurgy has to rely on spatially interpolated information on geometallurgical parameters like phase composition, size distributions of particles of different phases, grain shape parameters, and portions of value elements in different grains. Using the geostatistically predicted values for adaptive processing, e.g. for the selection of milling diameters, thresholds in physical separation, or choices on using an extra pre-separation step, is typically not optimal. Mathematically this effect is introduced by two forms of nonlinearities: 1) The nonlinear scales of compositions, distributions, and shapes have special properties with respect to geostatistics. Classical geostatistics creates some artefacts for these nonlinear scales. On the other hand, modern geostatistical procedures adapted to these scales do not provide unbiased results with respect to linear transformations of the data (e.g. biased block estimates). 2) Neither economic nor ecological effects (e.g. monetary gain) of processing decisions are linear in the interpolated geometallurgical parameters. These nonlinear transforms are not unbiasedly estimated by the likewise transformed unbiased geostatistical predictions of the geometallurgical parameters. Furthermore, we need to optimize the conditional expectation of the gain, rather than obtain an unbiased estimate. Standard geostatistics as such does not provide the "right sort" of estimates for adaptive processing. A nonlinear kriging procedure is needed to approximate the nonlinearities mentioned before. We propose to solve these problems simultaneously using a nonlinear geostatistical technique for predicting the target function (the monetary gain), rather than to predict the geometallurgical parameters and compute the gain from them. The optimization can then be performed directly on this estimated function. It can be shown that this optimization performed on the conditional expectations, not on unbiased predictions, would yield the best possible processing choice. We propose a procedure choosing the processing parameters on an approximation of the conditional expectation. The difficulties with the classical approach and the effectiveness of this new approach are illustrated by a simplified simulation example with a single processing parameter and a simple dependence on the microstructure.
