A Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for Low and Intermediate Level radioactive waste has been proposed by Ontario Power Generation for the Bruce Nuclear site in Ontario, Canada. The DGR is to be constructed at a depth of about 680m below ground surface within the argillaceous Ordovician limestone of the Cobourg Formation. The objective of this paper is to apply paleoclimate boundary conditions to a regional-scale groundwater flow model for the DGR site and to describe the influence of glacial loading and unloading on flow system evolution using the FRAC3DVS-OPG flow and transport model. The regional-scale domain encompasses an area of 18,775km2 extending from Lake Huron to Georgian Bay in southwestern Ontario, Canada. From a hydrogeologic perspective, the domain can be subdivided into a shallow zone, an intermediate zone, and a deep zone comprised of the low-permeability units of Ordovician and the more permeable Cambrian where present. The deep groundwater zone is characterized by units containing stagnant water having high concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) that can exceed 300g=L. The high TDS values at depth require density-dependent coupled flow and transport calculations within FRAC3DVS-OPG. The computational sequence involves the calculation of steady-state density independent flow that is used as the initial condition for the determination of pseudo-equilibrium for a density-dependent flow system that has an initial TDS distribution. The 1,000,000 year pseudo-equilibrium heads and brine concentrations are used as the initial condition for the paleoclimate simulations. Over the past 900,000 years, the Canadian Shield has experienced approximately nine episodes of complete glaciation. During the glaciation cycles, the entire Canadian land mass has been covered by a series of continental ice-sheets whose maximum thickness reached 4 km and whose southern extents reached, in some cases, beyond the present-day Canada-U.S. border. The glaciation phase of a single glaciation-deglaciation episode is typically 90,000 years in duration, while the deglaciation portion proceeds relatively rapidly and has an average duration of approximately 10,000 years. Output from the University of Toronto Glacial Systems Model, a continental scale North American glacial reconstruction of the most recent 120,000 year glaciation event developed by W. R. Peltier, is used to supply the paleoclimate boundary conditions used in this paper. Permeabilty reductions due to the presence of permafrost are also considered in the paleoclimate simulations. This paper will demonstrate that the choice of rock properties can significantly affect residual pore water pressures within the rock matrix, as well as the migration of glacial meltwater.

"Multi-pass friction stir processing (FSP) was performed to fabricate a new Al-Mg-Graphene nanocomposite. Microstructural developments and distribution of graphene were studied by using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. In the stirred zone (SZ), grain structure was refined down to about 2 µm attributing to the operative dynamic restoration mechanisms and the locking effect of graphene phase. As a result, the yield strength of Al-Mg alloy was improved more than two times due to incorporation of graphene nano-sheets. Also, the indentation hardness resistance of nanocomposite was increased up to ~60%.INTRODUCTION Aluminum-matrix nanocomposites have garnered significant in recent years due to their superior performance and potential advantages for several industrial applications including the automotive and aerospace sectors. Among various reinforcing nano-materials, carbon-based structures featuring sp2 or sp3 hybridization bonds have been found to offer considerably improved physical and mechanical properties. Such carbon allotropes form at micro- and nano-scales including; graphite, carbon nano-tube (CNT), nano-fiber, and graphene. The potential of two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials was introduced in 2004, with the development of graphene as an alternate 2D allotropic form of the carbon structure with a honey-comb lattice at the atomic-scale. It has been shown that it is currently among the strongest materials ever tested with an intrinsic tensile strength of 130 GPa and Young’s modulus of 1000 GPa, and also offers unique thermal and electrical properties.To fabricate metal-matrix nanocomposites reinforced by graphene nano-sheets with typical metallurgical processing techniques, some attempts have been reported in the literature for various solid-state techniques including; hot rolling, mechanical alloying, and friction stir processing (FSP) of pre-cast plates or surface dispersed graphene oxides. The main challenge in those methods was to facilitate the considerable high temperature and pressure for attaining a uniform dispersion of the nano-sheets during the consolidation process. In most cases, significant difficulties have been reported in obtaining a uniform dispersion of graphene within the metal matrix. Among various techniques for production of metal-matrix nanocomposites, FSP has attracted significant attention as a method of surface modification since it was first reported by Mishra et al. In this process, a non-consumable rotating tool is plunged into the surface of material for the aim of microstructure modification. Extreme material plasticity is induced without melting as a result of friction between the tool and workpiece. Frictional heating and severe plastic deformation induced by the FSP process enables metal matrix nanocomposite fabrication by softening the base material and mechanical stirring to disperse the reinforcing nano-materials into the matrix."

At both the international and country level, the issue of how the mining sector and indigenous populations should engage on issues of mutual interest or concern has emerged as one of central importance and controversy; involving the mining industry, Aboriginal communities, governments, the courts, and other stakeholders. At its heart, stakeholder engagement is an ethical issue, although it manifests itself in international instruments, domestic laws, industry guidance and agreements. At the international level, the concept of ?free, prior and informed consent? (FPIC), while not subject to widespread agreement on the finer details of evolving definitions, seems to be emerging as an increasingly recognized engagement norm. Within Canada, through a series of decisions, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) has articulated a fiduciary obligation of the Crown to consult with and accommodate impacted Aboriginal groups on resource management issues. Provincial governments have been variously attempting to adjust their resource management regimes to stay in alignment with SCC and lower court decisions. Mining sector organizations, working with First Nations partners, have developed agreements to work together for mutual benefit. At the individual mine and community level, there have been instances of constructive engagement, as well situations of physical resistance and legal challenges. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential impact of new rules under the Ontario Mining Act introduced in 2012 and taking full effect in 2013, which amongst other procedural specifications, addresses the issue of mining industry-Aboriginal consultation in exploration and development activities. Leading up to the passage of the regulations, representatives from some junior mineral exploration companies have been highly critical of the new rules. Similarly, there have been a range of responses to the new rules from some in the First Nations community. The paper will review the regulation in terms of its apparent alignment with SCC decisions and the international norm, compare the regulations with existing mining sector organization guidance documents, and it will draw on the stated perspectives and commentaries of First Nations communities, mining firms, governments, nongovernmental organizations, and others. Building on the foregoing, the paper will provide a preliminary analysis of the perspectives and potential impacts of the new regulation on various stakeholders, and on that basis, possible avenues for further consideration will be suggested.

"In Malaysia, there were two rare earths processing plants namely Asian Rare Earth (ARE) and the Malaysian Rare Earth Corporation Plant (MAREC) in Perak, which were operated until 1992 and were subsequently closed due to problems pertaining to disposal of large amount of radioactive waste. Recently, Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) has become one of the largest rare earths processing plant in the world producing rare earth elements (REE) in Gebeng, Pahang. The primary raw material is lanthanide concentrate (LC) which is imported from Mount Weld mine in Australia and shipped to Malaysia. LC is produced from lanthanide ore after mining and mineral processing. The ore has a lower impact than Bayan Obo, Mountain Pass and adsorbed clay deposits, given the small footprint of the mine itself and the remoteness of the location. The type of ore being mined (rare earth phosphates: carbonatite, monazite) may have higher thorium content than bastnasite ore from the Chinese or American mines but still far below radiation concerns. This paper was written to review the processing flowsheet at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP), the environmental impact associated with the processing of the said ores and the sustainability of the operation.INTRODUCTIONRare earth minerals are one of a set of 17 minerals or chemical elements which consists of yttrium and scandium, as well as the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). Despite their importance, rare earth minerals rarely exist in economically viable concentrations and they are usually difficult to extract. Rare-earth minerals create strong magnets when added to magnetic elements such as iron, and are useful for the production of electronics systems as well as electric cars. They are also used extensively in automotive catalytic converters, fluid cracking catalysts in petroleum refining, wind turbines, phosphors in colour televisions and flat panel screens, displays for mobile phones and laptops, rechargeable batteries, and various medical devices. The elements are typically split into two subgroups: the cerium sub-group of ‘‘Light’’ rare earth elements (LREEs) which includes La to Eu and the yttrium sub-group of ‘‘Heavy’’ rare earth elements (HREEs) which include the remaining lanthanide elements, Gd to Lu, including yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al., 2013; Trifonov, 1963). Scandium, however, when it is classified as a rare earth element, is not included in either the LREE or HREE classifications (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al, 2013). Half of the world’s 110 million tons of reserves exist in China while other sizable deposits are found in Russia, United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Canada, and Greenland. The countries known to be actively mining REE are China, Russia, India, Brazil and Malaysia (Hao et al., 2015). Among these countries, China has the largest REE production, accounting for more than 93% of global supply (Yap, 2015). The critical metal report (Moss et al. 2011) listed 14 economically vital raw materials that are prone to supply disruption and concluded that supply disruption would threaten the goal for cleaner transport and sustainable energy since rare earth metals are used in products using green technology, such as hybrid/electric vehicles, carbon capture systems, wind power generation, low-energy lighting, and energy efficient flat-screen displays."

The St. John Del Rey Mining Company, Limited, is an English company owning 150 square miles -of mining lands near Belo Horizonte, Minas Geraes, Brazil. The area is 2,300 to 5,000 feet above sea level, with a pleasant and healthy climate. Bedrock is Precambrian. The Nova Lima series of metamorphosed sediments and some volcanics is overlain uncomfortably by the Minas series of quartzites, itabirites. etc. Batholithic granite and gneiss cut both series and basic dykes cut all these rocks. There are important deposits of gold, iron, and manganese on the Company's holdings, as well as occurrences of arsenic, antimony, cobalt, nickel, dolomite, day, quartz, -ochre, bauxite, kyanite, and asbestos. Except for gold and consequent recovery of arsenic, all the other materials are relatively unexploited. The Company operates the Morro Velho gold mine and the Espirito Santo and Raposos gold mine. The Morro Velho mine was purchased in 1834 for £56,000. To the end of 1952 it had produced 7,000,000 troy ounces of gold from 15,000,000 short tons of ore. The ore z?ones are replacement deposits in a sinuous siliceous dolomitic rock locally termed "lapa seca," and plunge east, near surface at 45 °, at 8,000 feet at 15°. The ore minerals are pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Gold is finely distributed and almost nowhere visible. Ore reserves at the end of 1952 were estimated at 5.5 million short tons grading 0.39 oz. gold per ton. Chances exist for new ore within the mine area. The Espirito Santo and Reposos mine, in folded banded iron formation, has mineralization similar to Morro Velho but sulphides are less abundant. The mine to a depth of 2,500 feet has estimated ore reserves of 1.5 million tons of an average grade of 0.28 oz. gold per ton. New ore may be expected both laterally and at depth. To the end -of 1952, the ?Company had paid dividends of almost £4,- 600,000, largely earned from the operation of the gold mines.

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. "Crucible slag tests were employed to evaluate different refractory brick classes for the Cerro Matoso electric furnace. Comprehensive analysis was conducted to evaluate the crucible erosion and characterize any slag/refractory reaction products.The classes of refractories investigated were:•,tar-impregnated magnesia;•,rebonded fused grain magnesia-chrome;•,direct bonded magnesia-chrome;•,alumina-chrome;•,picrochromite; and•,magnesia-alumina (spinel).It was concluded that tar-impregnated MgO bricks were the most suitable for the slag chemistry and furnace environment according to corrosion and infiltration resistance. A picrochromite (MgCr2O4) brick performed exceptionally well with regards to erosion resistance, however, the slag infiltrated extensively through the brick pores. Alumina-chrome, direct bonded magnesia-chromite, and spinel (magnesia-alumina) bricks were evaluated as not suitable for use in the furnace."

Abstract - Natural gamma ray well logging, an effective tool in geophysical prospecting, is used to investigate the radioactive and phosphatic layers in the Khneifiss mine in Syria. The interpretation of the gamma ray measurements, using numerical methods of analysis developed previously and applied successfully in some phosphatic areas in Syria, make it possible to define precisely the phosphate thickness from place to place in the study area. This technique has been successfully applied while studying seven boreholes in the area. Sixty-three core samples from phosphatic layers in the boreholes have been analyzed, using gamma ray spectrometry for the determination of P2O5 , U, Th, and K. Good correlation between P2O5 content and U concentration has been found. The total count gamma logs correlate reasonably well with the U core analysis, suggesting that radioactive equilibrium exists in the U decay series. These gamma logs can be therefore used effectively to quantitatively map the distribution of P2O5 and U. The characteristics of both subsurface phosphatic sand and phosphatic rocks have been investigated and outlined using a statistical approach. The affinity of uranium to some trace elements such as V, Sr, Cu, and Ni has been verified using correlation matrices of these elements.

In 1958, the Iron Ore Company of Canada decided to proceed with the Carol Project. The ore deposits in the area are part of the highly metamorphosed southern zone of the Labrador Trough. They lie along the shore of W a bush lake, in the western part of Newfoundland-Labrador, 190 miles north of Sept-Iles. The project is designed to mine, by open-pit methods, 17,200,000 long tons of crude ore, grading 37 per cent iron, per year. This ore will be beneficiated to produce 7,000,000 long tons of concentrate, grading 66 per cent iron, of which 5,500,000 long tons will be pelletized. Production is scheduled to commence this summer. Initially, ore will be taken from 45-foot benches in the Smallwood mine, using jet-piercing production drills and large-scale blasting with "slurry" explosives. Four 13-yard electric shovels will muck the broken ore into 100-ton trailer trucks. The trailers will be hauled to two 2,000-ton loading pockets, which feed the ore into 100-ton railcars. Talc is used as a gelating, diluting, antimould and softening agent in the pharmaceutical industries. This article reviews efforts made for producing pharmaceutical grade talc from a mine located in the west of Iran, called Masoud Abad. Reaching to the pharmaceutical standards, was the principal goal of the talc beneficiation. Methods such as flotation and leaching were applied to eliminate the impurities. Considering to the negligible Fe content of the ore, the major impurity was calcium carbonate and to some extent dolomite. Depressants used in froth flotation were dextrine, quebraco and sodium silicate. Variation of collectors such as oil petroleum, paraffin, stearic acid were also used. After optimization of the effective parameters, followed by two stages of flotation (rougher and cleaner) acid leaching process was also applied as a complementary step to remove the impurities. CaO impurities in the sample was 11.63% which reduced to 1.03% after two stages of flotation, and finally reached to 0.03% CaO by leaching process. This figure is more lower than the world pharmaceutical standards (i.e. <0.6 % CaO). The highest recovery was 55% at the best conditions. Other impurities (i.e.As, lead, heavy metals ,?) which were at standard levels, confirmed by the authorized health organizations.

THIS P APER has been pre-pared as a progress report on Mines Branch investigations into problems of ground stress in certain co al mines of Western Canada. As such, it should be considered as a companion report to the one ( 1) presented to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia in 1956 and which dealt with similar investigations in the coal mines of Eastern Canada. For the past 50 years, dynamic incidents in the form of &apos;bumps&apos; and &apos;outbursts&apos; have been occurring in the coal mines of the Inner Foot-hills belt of tl1e Canadian Cordillera. As these phenomena generally become more frequent with in-creased thickness of overburden, a limiting depth of mining of 2,500 feet has been set (2) for estimating recoverable reserves of coal. If such a view were accepted, from a long-term viewpoint very large resources of coking-grade ?coal -in a part of the continent deficient in such coals -would not be available to the nation. The terrain in which these in-6dents take place may be described in geological terms as being dominated by pronounced structure in strata ?consisting of a large proportion of highly indurated rocks. The Geological Survey of Canada has co-operated by carrying out structural studies (3) at the mines, supplemented lithological by stratigraphic observations.

The development of the Granduc mine presents a number of problems which are peculiar to its location and surrounding terrain. Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art. "A pilot shaft furnace was operated for one year at Steep Rock to produce special high-grade products from coarse ore, using lignite as fuel. The furnace is 10 ft in diameter and 60 ft high. When operated to heat coarse Steep Rock ore to drive off combined water and give a 64-per-cent-Fe product, the fuel consomption was 900,000 Btu's per long ton of product. The furnace was run in this way from September 1966 to January 1967 to establish the technique of feeding and discharging the furnace and controlling the gas composition and temperature. The furnace is similar in operation to a lignite water gas producer containing a large proportion of catalytic iron oxide. Steam injection is used to control the temperature. The product was tumbled in a rotary trommel to stabilize it. The resulting fines could be fed to the conventional pellet plant at Steep Rock. The furnace was next operated to make 77-per-cent-Fe metallized coarse ore. Several major modifications in de-sign were made and the furnace was successfully operated for short periods to maintain the required conditions to remove 75 per cent of the oxygen from the ore to give a 75-per-cent-reduced product at a grade of 77 per cent iron. The furnace cooling zone was operated under positive pressure, with internai alkaline water sprays to cool the charge. The product was discharged from the open bottom of the furnace without serions reoxidation. The metallized ore was magnetically separated from the discharge. Most of the charred lignite discharged along with the ore is re-cycled. Fuel requirement was 11,000,000 Btu's per long ton of product. This metallized coarse ore is intended for blast furnace feed. A short test run was carried out to establish the conditions for making a highly reduced melting stock for steel furnaces. To achieve 90 per cent reduction and over 90 per cent Fe, the furnace must be slowed down so that the production rate is about one-half the rate when making a 75-per-cent-reduced metallized product. Fuel requirement is 15,000,000 Btu's per long ton of product. The simple shaft furnace developed is similar to the top half of a blast furnace, with some major modifications to allow discharging into the open air. This Low Temperature Blast Furnace program has been technically successful and has resulted in making data available for the design of a commercial plant. Study of the commercial feasibility of large-scale production of metallized coarse ore at Steep Rock is still continuing."

The use of electricity in coal mines dates almost from the time when it was realized chat it could be used to produce mechanical power. The first motor put in service underground was installed to drive a small pump nearly 40 years ago, and since then the use of electricity in mines has reached an extent undreamed of at that time. We now find its universal adoption in all the mining countries of the world. Great progress has been made in the development of mining electrical apparatus in the last decade, and excellent and adequate material is now available for the use of electricity underground. Although mining accidents, due to the use of electricity, are not frequent, the miner is justified in demanding chat all electrical apparatus for installation below ground be constructed with a greater degree of safety than that used on the surface. That this view is shared by the authorities of the different mining countries is evidenced by governmental regulations relative to the use, erection, and maintenance of electrical apparatus below ground. Those with which we are specially concerned are the regulations for the installation and use of electricity in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. The potential dangers of electricity in coal mines are: Shock or burns by contact from live parts. Shock or burns by contact with parts which, although normally dead, have become accidentally alive. Acid rock drainage (ARD) is one of the most serious and potentially enduring environmental problems of the mining industry. High liability costs carried by many mining companies to cover potential obligations of ARD are a clear indication of the gravity of the problem. Unchecked, ARD can result in water quality impacts that could well be the industry&apos;s most significant financial and credibility risk. Effectively preventing acid drainage is a formidable challenge that requires the total commitment of the mining industry throughout the entire life-cycle of a mine. To achieve this commitment a strong business case for ARD prevention must be developed. This paper will address the elements of acid prevention and discuss their importance not only to the company but the entire industry as well. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is an industry-led group created to help meet this challenge. In 2009, INAP published the GARD Guide (www.gardguide.com), a web-base best practices guide for the prevention of ARD [1]. In this paper, the GARD Guide will be used to identify preventative actions for all mining industry stakeholders. It will, in turn, be used to estimate ARD management and mitigation value accrued to the company from ARD prevention, which will be used in developing a business case for acid prevention.

"The Archean Blake River Group is best known from a central volcanic complex in Rouyn-Noranda. This volcano-tectonic depression, delimited by the Hunter Creek fault to the north and the Horne Creek fault to the south, is interpreted to be a cauldron approximately 20 km in diameter. Its western and eastern boundaries are the Flavrian Plutonand the D'Alembert shear zone respectively. The complex has an exposed stratigraphic thickness of 10.5 km. Two cycles, composed of andesitic units overlain by bimodal, andesite - rhyolite units, are observed in the area, and are, in turn, overlain by an andesitic unit interpreted to be the lower part of a third cycle.The southern sector of the Blake River Group, south of the central volcanic complex, is considered to be outside the limits of the cauldron, but partly contemporaneous with it. The maximum stratigraphic thickness exposed in this area is 4 .6 km. At least two cycles occur in this sector. The oldest unit, a pre-cauldron andesitic to basaltic unit, occurs only in the southern part of the sector. In the north, two partial andesite - bimodal cycles, interpreted as contemporaneous with the cauldron volcanism, are observed.The eastern sector of the Blake River Group, east of the central volcanic complex, apparently overlies the complex. Two units are observed in this sector: a lower bimodal unit and an uper andesitic unit. The bimodal unit is coupled with the uppermost andesitic unit of the central volcanic complex to form a cycle, and the andesitic unit is considered to be the uppermost unit of the Blake River Group. The total exposed stratigraphic thickness in the sector is 2.5 km.The western sector of the Blake River Group, north and west of the central volcanic complex, is interpreted as the lateral equivalent of the complex. Three andesite - bimodal cycles are exposed in this sector, giving a total stratigraphic thickness of9 .5 km. The two lower cycles correspond directly to the central volcanic complex cycles; this correlation is facilitated by two stratigraphic marker units observed on either side of the Hunter Creek fault: the Fish-roe rhyolite flow, east of the Flavrian pluton, and a spherulitic rhyolite lapilli-tuff, west of the Flavrian pluton.Many of the volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits found in the central volcanic complex are spatially and temporally associated with synvolcanic faults, and felsic domes and feeder dykes that are the sites of felsic volcanism in the bimodal units. However, these features also occur outside the central volcanic complex, and the similarities recognized in this work between the complex and the surrounding area suggest that such deposits need not be restricted to the central volcanic complex. The presence of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits outside the complex confirms this."

"The province of Quebec has a strong tradition in industrial minerals. Ten commodities are produced and the annual total shipments have exceeded $600 million in recent years. Quebec is a world renowned producer of chrysotile, titanium slag, graphite, and ilmenite. Quebec is an important North American producer of mica, talc, and peat moss. This paper reviews the main minerals and commodities that have been the object of exploration or development in recent years, namely graphite, wollastonite, dolomite, and silica. Some of the leading projects concerning magnesium minerals and apatite-ilmenite are described. IntroductionQuebec has a strong tradition in industrial minerals. It goes back to the second half of the 19th century when the first graphite and apatite mines in the Gatineau area and asbestos mines in the Eastern Townships were opened. Since then, more than 25 commodities have been produced in Quebec, making industrial minerals an integral part of the Quebec mineral industry. Today, industrial minerals and building materials count for one third of the total mineral production in Quebec.Present industrial mineral production includes 10 commodities (Table 1). In the last five years, the value of industrial mineral shipments has varied between 500 and 700 millions dollars annually, which represents 20% to 25% of Quebec’s total mineral production. For many years, Quebec has been a major producer of chrysotile and titanium slag, the only producer in eastern North America of mica, graphite and ilmenite, and a leading Canadian producer of talc and peat moss. Quebec also produces, mainly for domestic markets, dolomite, limestone, salt and silica.Quebec’s industrial mineral sector has been quite active in the recent years. Exploration by government geologists and companies has led to the outlining of new deposits, some of which are now in production; others are currently being evaluated. Technical and economic studies are also underway to determine the feasibility of various development projects."

Introduction Some interest is being shown in Canada in underground gasification of coal and, as developments have now taken place in several countries of the world, it is thought that a review of progress, particularly from the viewpoint of a mining engineer, may be of interest. The literature on the subject, and notably that of Russian origin, is already very voluminous. The various methods of underground gasification of coal have evolved from initial attempts to employ underground workings as gasifiers of previously fragmented coal or to use some method that involves little or no preparatory work underground. The &apos;stream&apos; method, shown schematically in Figure 1, has been the only one used in tests to date in countries outside the U.S.S.R. Other methods, involving preparatory work underground prior to gasification, are the early &apos;chamber&apos; method, where fragmented coal was gasified in rooms between inlet and outlet entries, and the underground borehole&apos; method, illustrated in Figure 2, where gasification is developed in a succession of boreholes which are temporarily sealed and then abandoned in turn after gasification. The stream method appears. to be particularly suitable for pitching seems as it is claimed that the pitch prevents ash accumulation or serious blockage from roof falls, and it also aids the circulation of the stream. As a considerable proportion of Canadian medium and high-rank coal seams are inclined, it would seem that, at least at the outset, the stream method or a modification thereof would be the one most applicable to all but the Saskatchewan lignite fields and the flat domestic-coal fields of Alberta.

"What is new in air compressors? A good deal - the designers have been keeping pace with technical developments in related fields and also contributing new techniques of their own. Plant reliability no longer requires bulky slow-speed machines. Even the reciprocating machines, which still provide the most efficient method of compressing air, have been greatly reduced in size and installation cost for a given capacity rating. New materials and fabrication techniques are being used, by most manufacturers, to produce less costly plants in total. Many packaged plants are available, which generally means a more complete assembly for shipment. This type of construction offers savings in handling and erection costs at the site. A warning is in order, however - the extent of packaging in any given plant should be investigated carefully to determine what is included and just what field costs can be realized. A suggested specification has been offered for consideration when studying comparative costs. Rotating machines intrigue many because of their potential as regard fewer wearing parts, higher speeds and hence smaller units, utilizing less expensive drivers, and lack of contamination of the compressed air by lubricants. The inherent shortcomings of these machines - lower •efficiency and capacity control - have been much improved lately, and this type of plant is now becoming quite popular. Noise control, of much concern to everyone, is another development that has received considerable attention.Systems for efficient capacity control and continuous monitoring of compressor operation offer additional reliability and low-cost operation of the modern compressed air plant. Accessory equipment and its effect on over-all plant operation is also considered."
