"RésuméComme l'exploitation d'un gisement à grande profondeur représente un défi de taille et que la profondeur à laquelle se situe celui d'Ansil varie de 1200 m à 1460 m, nous avons dû mettre en place une infrastructure de surface d'envergure incluant un treuil de production et un chevalement d'une très grande capacité. De même, l'infrastructure sous terre a été proposée en tenant compte de ce fait important; d'ailleurs, l'excavation de deux puits circulaires dont l'un est en beton et acier et l'autre exclusivement en béton en témoigne. De plus, la plupart des cheminées principales qui furent excavées sous terre sont de forme circulaire.L 'exploitation du gisement s'effectue par une méthode chantier ouvert (abattage par longs trous), remblaye immédiatement âpres avec un mélange de roche stérile et ciment. Un taux de minage de 1750 tonnes par jour est requis pour assurer la production.L 'utilisation d'une technologie de pointe tels: les ventilateurs et les portes de ventilation sous terre contrôlées de la surface, un système de relèves macroséismiques, de chargeuses-navettes contrôles à distance, en passant par le dessin et la planification assistes par ordinateur nous permet d'optimiser l'exploitation du gisement Ansil.IntroductionEtant donne la grande profondeur a laquelle le gisement Ansil se situe, no us avons à mettre en place une infrastructure souterraine et de surface d'envergure pour nous permettre d'atteindre nos objectifs d'exploitation.Infrastructure de surfaceLa mine Ansil dispose d'une infrastructure de surface d'importance possédant une grande capacité (Fig. I). Les deux facteurs qui furent déterminant pour le dimensionnement des infrastructures furent le taux d'extraction de 1990 t/jour et la profondeur a laquelle I 'exploitation s'effectue, puis que cette dernière affecte le temps de cycle et la capacité de hissage.La première composante principale de I 'infrastructure de surface est un treuil de production a 2 tambours de 3.65 m de diamètre et de 2.0 m de largeur chacun. Ce treuil de marque Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay construit en 1970, opère avec 2 moteurs de 930 kW a une vitesse de 700 m/min. et il a une capacité maximale de 32000 kg. Deux câbles d'acier de 45 mm de diarnètre et de 160 000 kg de résistance a la rupture servant au hissage des bennes d'une capacité de 12 tonnes. De plus, un moteur/générateur de 3000 kW (M.G. Set) raccorde au treuil de production sert a stabliser son alimentation électrique."

"While the mine developer looks for bigger and better orebodies in countries offering lower risks to development capital, the opera-tor of existing mines is looking for bigger and better ways to use his existing resources. Mining operations today utilize a variety of stand-alone systems for planning and managing their operations. In both small and large mines, payroll, accounting, inventory, planning, and engineering requirements are met using a combination of manual and computer-based systems.Technical advances and new enabling technologies are changing how mines are doing business. PC-based systems are allowing small operations to join the larger mines in using advanced computer-based systems. Advanced monitors are being used in maintenance to track, predict and correct the health of production equipment. Production monitoring systems are used to measure the performance of operating equipment and personnel in real time. This detailed information on how much, where, when, and by whom is being used for proactive management and planning. Ultimately, this information can be used to optimize and control the machines’ activities, eventually leading to robotic and autonomous operation of mining equipment.As the use of technology increases in mining, specific information objectives are being met but other problems are being created. The life cycle of technology is small, and as current systems are replaced by newer ones, integration problems and additional end-user training are created. In addition, onboard monitoring systems can create large volumes of data, data which are frequently archived without being analyzed. Mine operators are also duplicating efforts applying new technologies in an effort to be more competitive, but in doing so are creating interfaces which are only compatible with their own facilities. As system development moved from the centralized mainframe computer to the PC environment, the fragmentation of these systems became more pronounced.To efficiently continue in adapting and utilizing advancing technology, the mining industry needs to develop a system architecture that readily integrates as many sub-systems as possible. This will provide a framework for existing system integration and design guide-lines for future development. The Total Mining System (TMS) concept will allow a network of stand-alone functional modules to be readily integrated with minimal effort. This paper will discuss some of the current technologies cur-rently in use in some surface mine operations.In addition, a description of the information system and communications requirements that will be needed to integrate these components in the future, will be discussed."

Realising the circular economy (CE) is faced with some significant challenges. Process metallurgy and its infrastructure play key roles at the heart of making the CE work. Therefore, the enabling role of process metallurgy within the CE will be central to the discussion in this paper, touching among others on product and system design as well as the key metallurgical and other process fundamentals that need to be investigated and understood to make the CE a reality. The central role of materials and its processing will be discussed in an integrated circular cities perspective. A key focus will be a discussion on designing a resilient “Smart Materials Grid” using and innovating metallurgical process engineering tools, which will manage the flows through Sustainable Circular Cities. The discussion will be using copper as leitmotiv of the discussion i.e. from copper ore, to metal, to complex products, recycling, product design and simulation and its impact. INTRODUCTION The transformation of our economies from linear to circular models in which waste materials become resources is the focus of the Circular Economy (CE) paradigm. Its important intentions: to take control of the damage we have been doing to the planet to ensure its livability and the welfare of future generations. This can only be achieved through careful utilisation of human, natural and economic resources. The concept is derived from several others (Beaulieu et al., 2015), of which Cradle-to-Cradle, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Industrial Ecology, and Life Cycle Thinking are just a few. Other relevant concepts include resource efficiency (RE), design-for-recycling (DfR), and various others discussed by Blomsma and Brennan (2017) and Homrich et al. (2018), as well as various R-hierarchies e.g. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R). However, does society comprehend these concepts, the actors and actions that influence them and how they interact? Do we know the limits of CE? Does society understand the key role of Copper and other metals to rendering the CE operable? True life cycle and systems thinking, focussed on simulation-based, process and metallurgical design are required to answer these questions. Lieder and Rashid (2016) identify nine widely-varying fields that study the concept ranging from sustainability sciences and engineering to economics, business, law, and social sciences. Overlap between questions addressed highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Nanz et al., 2017) in the assessment of the current status, and further steps needed to transform to CE. This doesn’t apply just in academia, but also in industry where concrete implementation of CE needs to occur at multiple levels, thus necessitating cooperation between government, civil society and other stakeholders (Beaulieu et al., 2015).

Cameco's Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) started commercial uranium ore production in 2015. Initial mining was focused in areas of the ore body with relatively low concentrations of elements of concern (EOCs). As mining progressed into areas of the ore body that were richer in EOCs, some statistically significant behavior of certain analytes was noted in the water treatment circuits. It was ultimately found that the CLO ore body natively hosts numerous alkyl arsine compounds in addition to inorganic arsenide minerals. The alkyl arsines were found to be recalcitrant to typical adsorption on ferrihydrite, with the degree of recalcitrance associated with the degree of alkylation. A number of changes to the process circuits and water balance were performed and planned in order to inhibit the transport of alkyl arsines from the ore stream into the process water stream, and to optimize the overall site water usage. In some instances, the interactions of equipment in conjoined circuits of the process had controlling effects on the behavior of the overall circuit. Work continues to iterate upon the capital design features in order to further tighten the water balance, and to optimize water usage and operating costs.

EUROPEAN Russia is mainly a great plain, the average elevation of which is only 600 feet above sea level and the maximum elevation less than 1,200 feet (Figure 1). The main divide between the Arctic ocean and the Black sea and Caspian sea is an indistinguishable topographic feature from which the Dneiper and Don rivers flow southward to the Black sea and the Volga river to the Caspian. The valleys of these rivers are but little below the general level (Figure 2). To the south, this great, rolling plain is broken by a low ridge of Precambrian gneisses and intrusive rocks. The Crimea is an upland from which the descent to the Black Sea coast is precipitous (Figure 3). The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic occupies the southern part of the plain. It is the southwestern unit of the Union, bordered by Rumania and Poland on the west and by the Crimean Soviet Socialist Republic on the south.

"Potentially economic deposits of rare earth elements (REE) often contain elevated levels of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), primarily thorium and uranium and their associated radioactive decay products. The concentrations of NORM usually exceed typical background levels of natural radioactivity, sometimes by factors of ten or more, and can be of concern relative to occupational radiation protection and the management and disposal of REE mineral processing and metallurgical wastes. This paper provides a summary of the radiological issues normally encountered in the REE concentrate production industry. In addition to an introduction to background radiation and radioactivity, including the thorium and uranium radioactive decay series, radiation levels expected to be encountered in REE concentrate production are outlined. The occupational, environmental and regulatory aspects of REE production related to NORM, including radiation dose limits, radioactive waste disposal guidelines, and threshold VALUES (for the application of transport regulations, are presented.INTRODUCTIONConcurrent with the increasing demand for new sources of rare earth elements (REE) to meet modern industrial needs, there is also an increasing awareness of the radioactivity associated with the REE ores and resources. This is an especially important consideration in addressing questions from the public and local communities who are often concerned about “radiation” and “radioactivity”. Public concern is heightened by reference to legacy issues that arose during times of less regulatory oversight; as well, the benefits of modern technologies, practices and regulation are overlooked. Such concerns are also often inflamed by unfounded claims by non-governmental organizations (NGO’s). Thus, it is important that all concerned have a full understanding of just what the potential risks from radiation associated with REE are, or are not. This paper provides an overview of the sources of radioactivity, the potential implications of radiation and radioactivity in the REE industry, and a brief discussion of established and reliable methods of managing exposure to radiation and radioactivity."

"Preventative maintenance is a burden for equipment users but a demand from the machine suppliers to ensure performance. Machine availability depends on preventative maintenance being followed.Mining equipment is becoming more and more sophisticated and productive, yet less and less time is available for preventative maintenance. Manufacturers invest in reducing costs, simplifying operating requirements, and lowering maintenance requirements, but it is the users who must invest more heavily in the advanced maintenance systems to keep the units operating.IntroductionPreventative maintenance has been, and still is a key factor in avoiding disturbances in production due to equipment downtime. Manufacturers ask for it in extensive maintenance schedules, check lists, programs, etc. often with a ""threat"" that, if not performed, the machine guarantee will not be valid. Modern mining and construction machinery has become sophisticated, like all other machinery, with elaborate hydraulic, electric and electronic systems and computerized controllers. Maintenance organizations within the mining industry have grown to heavy cost centres just to keep up the availability of the equipment.It is difficult for machine manufacturers to have maintenance programs that suit every user. International suppliers have to deal with different cultures, education levels, environments, organizations, etc. Maintenance programs recommended by manufacturers often do not meet some user's needs while they are ""overkilling"" to others. Preventative maintenance schemes recommendations of what to do, in what frequency, etc.) usually fit mechanical components in the equipment, e.g. wear measurements, crack indications, lubrication, oil changes, etc. But how does one perform preventative maintenance on huge hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic systems and computers? Failures in these systems usually occur without any warning and are more or less impossible to predict. Another difficulty in creating effective preventative maintenance programs for these kinds of systems is the relatively low volume of mining and construction equipment that is produced per year. For example, although Atlas Copco is one of the largest manufacturers in the world of underground blast hole drilling machines, the company still does not produce more than a few hundred drilling jumbos per year. These are made in more than 10 different models, with different systems and components, and very often are custom adapted to the end user's requirements."

"The current state of environment has been achieved by acting linearly. At the same time, we know that transition towards circular economy cannot be made the same way that we have used to, trusting only a market economy and economic growth. Environmental improvements have been promoted, some progress has been made, but major steps towards sustainability have not been taken. Industry is now facing significant change, from process related environmental thinking to product-based environmental thinking.Engineers make decisions which have lifelong influence and even longer on environment and society. Material engineers in case of saving natural resources and increasing material cycle, have an important role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Best knowledge of minerals and materials is in the material development phase. If we want to increase the cycle of different materials, it is vital to make decisions towards circular economy in early phase of product´s life cycle.The target of this study is to promote circular economy; to increase material efficiency; to save natural resources; and to extend product lifecycles in process industry via product design and material development. In this study we have a new kind of cooperation. We combine two disciplines, engineering science and fine arts. We promote sustainability via breaking out the silos. We bring the cyclic artistic thinking into engineering science and environmental research. The new research combination makes the existing information visible in a new way, and it will change attitudes and ways to act by means other than traditional linear rationality.We have tested the new working method via the industrial case study with the chosen product: the sandwich panel of construction industry. The target of the study was to create something new from the chosen product with artistic thinking. The working method will be presented in this paper."

"In the last thirty years, the study of earthquake mechanisms has emphasized the major role of rock friction. Earthquakes appear to be the result of a frictional instability and occur by sudden slippage along a pre-existing fault or a plate interface. Multiphysics couplings play a major role in earthquake nucleation and seismic slip. The effect of shear heating and thermal pressurization may be of prime importance in the control of the stability of shear deformation inside the slipping zone. Other mechanisms in relation with thermal decomposition of minerals affect the pore pressure and the temperature evolution of the system, and can play a significant role in the extreme strain localization observed in field. The actual width of the localized zone is a key parameter for understanding fault weakening mechanisms. On the basis of field observations, laboratory experiments and recent advanced modeling, these phenomena are analyzed and discussed in order to bring some new insights in the understanding of earthquakes nucleation.INTRODUCTIONIn the last thirty years, the study of earthquake mechanisms has emphasized the major role of rock friction. The conceptual model of spring slider system is commonly used to represent the interaction between an elastic crustal block and a fault zone. Stick-slip instability is possible if the softening rate of the shear resistance of the fault zone is high enough as compared to the stiffness of the crustal block. Therefore, weakening mechanisms that can explain how the frictional resistance of a fault decreases with slip and/or slip rate is of prime importance to understand how an earthquake nucleates. In recent years, several drilling programs in active faults (e.g. the Nojima fault in Japan, Boullier, 2011; the Aigion Fault in Greece, Cornet et al. 2004, the Chelungpu fault in Taiwan, Ma et al. 2006, and the San Andreas fault in the U.S.A. Ellsworth et al. 2000) as well as high velocity friction experiments (e.g. Tanikawa et al 2012a; Tanikawa et al. 2012b) have highlighted the physico-chemical processes involved in the nucleation of seismic slip (see for the example the review paper of Niemeijer et al. 2012)."

"Rock mass characterization for deep underground construction and mining offers many challenges. This paper first describes some of the key challenges when characterizing highly stressed brittle rocks and then offers some guidance on how to arrive at reliable rock mass strength parameters for deep mining applications. Focus is placed on characterization for rock mass strength determination. It is illustrated how the common use of currently available rock mass characterization systems tend to underestimate the strength of rock at depth. Modifications to currently adopted approaches, i.e., the use of Geological Strength Index GSI for rock mass strength determination, are presented.INTRODUCTIONFor green fields projects, the first challenge of rock mass characterization stems from a lack of access to examine the rock mass at scales larger than typical core sizes (i.e., ~63mm in diameter) until late in the mine design when the flexibility for making changes is constrained. Hence, rock mass characterization often has to rely on information derived from boreholes alone (e.g., core, logs, etc.). This challenge is lessened when mines are expanded from existing operations. A second challenge is related to changing rock mass behaviour with increasing depth and stress. At depth, the rock is highly stressed, thus closer to failure, and often highly confined which leads to a higher interlocking with elevated strength but more brittleness. The goals of rock mass characterization are to be tailored to the technical goals of an investigation. For example, for cave engineering, the workflow includes the assessment of five key engineering aspects (Brown, 2007): Caveability; fragmentation; cave performance; extraction level stability; and mine construction (rock support). Each engineering aspect has to address specific engineering questions and each design component is influenced by different rock mass behaviour aspects and thus is dominated by different rock mass properties, e.g., the vulnerability to stress fracturing (spalling), the bulking characteristics for flow control and support selection, and the confining stress impact on pillar or support design. An effective rock mass characterization program, including logging, mapping and laboratory testing, thus has to collect and interpret features that are relevant for the above listed purposes. Some of the predominant factors are: block volume of defected and non-defected rock; spalling strength; tensile strength of defects; rock mass modulus; and rock mass strength parameters for application to low and high confinement design aspects."

A complementary ion exchange/solvent extraction process for the recovery of copper from low- grade ores is described. It has successfully been implemented on a full-scale plant level at the Buchim Copper Mine in Macedonia, yielding a maximum copper cathode production of 2400 tons per year. Compared with conventional SX/EW operations, this technology makes the exploitation of low-grade copper ores economically attractive, due to reduced operational and capital expenditures. Furthermore, the additional Lewatit® ion-exchange installations diminish the volumes of harmful organic substances in the following SX step and minimise the risks associated with the handling and usage of these chemicals, such as environmental pollution or fires. Finally, the significantly diminished quantities of liquids for the SX operation have a tremendous effect on the footprint of the plant (ca. 50% less) thereby leading to a reduction of capital expenditures. This paper reviews the main stages of the combined IX/SX process, the applications for metal recovery and introduces projects where the process is applied. Key findings of the process are also presented. A comprehensive technical comparison between processes has been carried out. This paper also evaluates the advantages of using combined IX/SX technology as a purification and separation step in copper production process, with the aim of further increasing the overall copper recovery and to ensure that a suitable copper concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a Ion Exchange (IX) process in the classic Solvent Extraction-Electrowinning process(SX/EW) is found to be beneficial for processing of pregnant leach solutions both from spent and new copper heaps and dumps, acid mine drainage and other industrial streams without any preconditioning as well as in terms of achieving improved recoveries and copper cathode quality. INTRODUCTION The concentration and separation of copper from primary leachates is one of the key operations in the hydrometallurgical processing of oxide ores (Langner, 2011). Conventionally, this basic operation is conducted by submitting the pregnant leach solution (PLS), with a 1–5 g/L Cu content, from the initial sulfuric acid leach to a solvent-extraction (SX) process in which copper reports to the organic phase. After phase separation, the metal is stripped from the extractant/diluent mixture employing sulfuric acid to furnish a concentrated metal solution, usually containing 40–50 g Cu/L. The final products of the overall process are copper cathodes, which are obtained from a terminal electrowinning step.

Fuel cells are promising sources of electrical energy because of their exceptionally high efficiencies and low environmental emissions. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are high temperature, ceramic electrolyte cells, which unlike most other fuel cells, can work with a variety of fuels besides pure hydrogen, including hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulfide. In this presentation I present the models we have built for a single H2S fuelled SOFC. The goal is to model the electrochemical reaction coupled with mass transfer, fluid flow and current/voltage distribution in an yttria stabilized zirconia electrolyte fuel cell assembly operated between 750 and 850 °C. Two models of the above SOFC are discussed in this work, 1) an algebraic model derived by integrating a one-dimensional model along the thickness of the cell, and 2) a two-dimensional finite element axi-symmetric model. Important physical and kinetic parameters in the 1-D model are fitted using experimental data sets at three different temperatures and reasonable fits are obtained for the data sets at 800 °C and 850 °C. However, the third data set at 750 °C does not give a good fit using this model. We need to apply the curve-fitting to more data sets to investigate it further. The main conclusion that can be drawn from the present study is that the ohmic resistance of the cell is very high. Contact resistances are believed to be the reason behind this although there could be contributions from resistive interphases. The 2-D model also gives reasonable fits to data sets. One of the publications by the laboratory group doing the experimental work in our department presented very interesting data that shows the cell performance being a strong function of fuel flow-rate. We want to model this behaviour and will have to depend on the 2-D model as the 1-D model does not have flow-rates as parameters.

"Coupon testing has been used to investigate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of rockbolts in a laboratory based experimental program. This program has focused on the use of ASTM G39 three- and four-point bent beam coupon specimens, immersed in an acidified sodium chloride test solution containing hydrogen sulfide. The specimens were loaded to a range of stresses from zero, to just above the materials yield strength. It was found that only specimens above an applied stress of 580MPa failed by means of SCC, showing that rockbolts loaded to near their yield strength may be susceptible to SCC in-situ.INTRODUCTIONStress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a failure mechanism that affects material through the growth of hairline cracks when exposed to a corrosive medium while under stress (Jones and Ricker, 1999). SCC has been found to affect rockbolts in the Australian underground coal mining industry and has the capacity to cause the catastrophic failure of ground support systems, potentially leading to falls of ground in underground excavations, injury or death to mine personnel, damage or loss of equipment, and loss of productivity through the loss of roadway access (Crosky et al, 2002).Coupon testing utilises small scale samples that are intended to be indicative of the behaviour exhibited by a material in-situ (ASTM G39). The small scale, and usually high surface area to volume ratio of coupon specimens mean that they corrode at faster rate proportional to their mass, greatly reducing testing times. The small scale of the specimens allows them to be more easily prepared and handled, loaning them to mass manufacturing techniques.A previous study conducted by Vandermaat et al (2012b) into the use of three- and four-point coupon testing in-situ in an underground coal mine failed to result in SCC of the specimens. This paper serves as a follow up laboratory investigation in order to understand why these specimens did not fail. Previous studies into the SCC in rockbolts carried out by Gamboa and Atrens (2003) determined that rockbolt steel has a critical stress threshold of approximately 90% of the material ultimate tensile strength (800-900MPa). This study will focus on this critical stress threshold as a possible explanation for the lack of failure in the in-situ specimens (Vandermaat, 2012b)."

THE Plains of east-central Alberta herein described embrace an area from Viking east to the Saskatchewan boundary and from North Saskatchewan river south to Coronation and Monitor (Figure 1). By far the greater part of this area is deeply drift-covered, and .outcrops of bedrock are relatively few and often widely separated. Within the area there are large morainal hills and others of considerable extent that superficially have all the characters of morainal hills but contain a core of bedrock. These latter, then, were hills when the ice sheet traversed the country and only have been modified by glacial agencies. In many places on them, the drift is but a thin veneer, as is certainly the case in part of the Neutral hills (Figure 2) northeast of Coronation and north of Monitor. In other cases, however, as in the Blackfoot hills, southwest of Lloydminster, the drift is sufficiently thick to conceal practically all the bedrock and in many places no information is available as to whether a bedrock core, representing a pre-glacial hill, is present. There is no question, however, that the larger river valleys, as for example those of the North Saskatchewan and Battle rivers, are in part at least pre-glacial. Proof of this can be demonstrated in many places, because obviously the valleys must have been present in pre-glacial times to allow glacial deposits to have accumulated in them. It is also known that inter-glacial deposits occur. At one locality in Battle River valley, in sec. 30, tp. 45, range 2, west of the 4th mer., the following section occurs( l ): 15 feet of boulder clay with granite and other boulders. 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels containing pebbles of Precambrian rocks and fresh-water shells. From this it is apparent that the 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels must have derived their Precambrian pebbles from a previous glaciation of which the overlying boulder clay represents another ice advance in this area. Thus, although the river valleys contain glacial and interglacial deposits, they have not been filled by them to such an extent that the drainage has been diverted, and in many places, especially in the case of Battle river and some smaller streams, the size of the valley is altogether out of proportion to the size of the stream it now contains.

"Dust size distribution and aerosol size distribution measurements have been carried out in several Canadian underground uranium mines. In addition, dust samples have been analyzed for long-lived radioactive products of the U-238 and Th-232 natural decay chains using ex-spectroscopy and -y-spectroscopy techniques.From the data collected one may summarize: (a) most airborne particulates are of size below I u-m and 50% by mass are found above 1 u-m; (b) dust clouds are bimodal; (c) preferential deposition of radon (thoron) daughters takes place on airborne particulates in the sub -micron range at about 0.1 u-m; (d) deposition of radon (thoron) daughters is proportional to particle surface area; and (e) ex-spectroscopy and -y-spectroscopy of dust samples reveals the presence of U-238, Ra-226 and some of their short-lived and long-lived decay products.IntroductionExtended inhalation of airborne radioisotopes poses a potential health problem to occupational workers. Because of this, monitoring of radiation and dust levels for dose exposure calculation purposes is not only recommended but in most cases mandatory.CANMET (Energy, Mines a nd Resources Canada) has long since been engaged in a comprehensive monitoring program aimed at determining dust concentrations in the respirable size range, aerosol concentration in the sub-micron range, and in the radioactivity associated with these particulates in underground uranium mines. Measurements have been carried-out with gravimetric dust samplers, dust size selectors (including a horizontal elutriator , a fineparticle spectrometer and Nuclepore* filters of different pore sizes) and a condensation nucleus counter(1 – 6). Inactive and active working sites have been monitored according to some typical mining operations. A summary of these data has been given elsewhere(3- 5)."

"Rare earth permanent magnets (REPM) have become virtually indispensible in hundreds of applications including aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy, medical and military. An understanding of REPMs is important since they are key drivers of demand for the overall rare earth sector. Rare earth permanent magnets stand out due to their superior magnetic properties of high induction and coercive force. We will discuss the past, current and future of the permanent magnet market and supply chain. We will summarize present and potential new nanocomposite and lower content or non rare earth magnet technologies and customer options which may mitigate rare earth usage.INTRODUCTIONRare earth permanent magnets are ubiquitous and often unseen critical components in many civilian, green energy and military technologies. They have become imbedded in applications such as hybrid electric vehicles, computer hard drives, direct-drive high power wind generators, audio speakers, motors, energy conversion systems, most weapons systems and hundreds of other uses. Several rare earth elements including neodymium, samarium, dysprosium, praseodymium, terbium and gadolinium are essential ingredients in production of the highest performance magnets available in the world today. They have enabled vast miniaturization and the significant increase in power density in hundreds of applications.China has become the dominant source of rare earth elements over the last two decades. Today, nearly 100 percent of the world’s rare earth metals and more than 95 percent of the rare earth oxides come from China. China’s near worldwide monopoly on the production of downstream materials such as rare earth oxides, metals and magnets severely impacts the supply chain in this growing global market. The past decade has seen an unmistakable trend toward increased dominance in raw material production and manufacturing by China, and a steep decline in U.S. production capabilities, most notably in the neodymium iron boron (Nd-Fe-B) market where there is currently no domestic production. This Chinese dominance is further demonstrated with over 65 percent of hard ferrite and roughly half of aluminum nickel cobalt (Alnico) and samarium cobalt (Sm-Co) production in that nation (Figure 1). In addition, China has imposed export quotas and export taxes of up to 25 percent for rare earth elements, arguably in violation of their covenants made with their protocol of accession to the Word Trade Organization. These export quotas have been decreasing steadily over the last several years in spite of rising global demand and were slashed by 72 percent in July 2010 (Bradsher, 2010) causing many recent news stories."

The burning sulphide ores in the Sullivan Mine generate sulphur dioxide gases. This paper is concerned with a description of the environmental impact of SO2 on air quality in the mine and on the surface in the vicinity of the mine. As a result of surface caving, SO2 has been able to vent to surface and winds have carried it into one residential area of Kimberley. Monitoring practices are described.

Crowing pressures on aggregate resources include diminishing reserves, high transportation costs, sterilization and land use conflicts. In the absence of detailed resource knowledge for a particular region, aggregate resource potential maps provide the best "first approximation" regarding the surficial distribution of sand and gravel. The 1:50 000 scale Level Ill aggregate potential map integrates several important factors which influence the management of sand and gravel. Data used to generate this type of thematic map is readily available in most areas, fieldwork required is minimal, there is a logical quantitative evaluation of the data layers and integration is easily accomplished on a desktop PC-based platform. Also the aggregate potential map, with its focus on identifying areas of potential future aggregate exploitation as well as present inventory, provides a useful tool for the aggregate explorationist.

Mine reconciliation is seen, for many, as a test of the quality of model estimates, while in fact it should be seen as a powerful tool for detecting and correcting problems in each step of mining operations, from resource estimation to metal production. Adequate reconciliation practices allow a more efficient control of the mining processes; however, its results can be illusory unless all parties involved have been in compliance with the principles of sampling correctness. This paper presents a new, segmented reconciliation matrix, which is based on the Theory of Sampling (TOS), developed to monitor gold operations and reserve estimation.

Introduction The geology of the Sudbury nickel field has been studied extensively, but there are few reports dealing with the structure of the interior of the basin. It was not until the Treadwell-Yukon zinc-lead deposits were discovered that attention was strongly directed toward the large-scale faulting that has split the basin parallel to its long axis. This faulting has been responsible for the , ore deposits in the basin and it may be regarded in many ways as the most important geological event, next to the intrusion and differentiation of the nickel eruptive sheet, that has occurred in the Sudbury region. The early reports on the nickel region by Bell, and Barlow, were chiefly concerned with the nickel-copper ores and with the formations of the region. Coleman was the first geologist to map the nickel eruptive as a continuous sheet around the belt and to emphasize its basin character. On the map accompanying his later report, he shows an important offset in the nickel eruptive at its southwest end, where the large fault cuts this portion of the basin, but the fault was not traced into its interior, as little detailed work was clone in the basin at that time. No ore-bodies had been developed outside of the nickel-copper deposits associated with the norite when the map was prepared, and attention was mostly concentrated on the nickel eruptive. Coleman did, however, map and name the various formations found within the basin and, in general, his delineation of these has remained the standard for prospectors and other workers in the field until the present day.
