THE following pages c9ntain a brief description of the processes involved in the manufacture of silica brick at the Sydney plant of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. Silica brick manufacture was commenced at Sydney in 1918, for the purpose of supplying the requirements of the steel plant, where about three million silica bricks were used annually. Previous to that date, all silica refractories were brought to Sydney from American sources and were subject to a freight cost of nine dollars per ton, or about twenty-seven dollars per thousand. As a preliminary step to manufacture, a thorough investigation of all possible sources of silica in the vicinity of Sydney was carried on during 1916 and 1917. ?Eighteen separate deposits were examined. Of this number, only four were found suitable for brick making, and the Leitches Creek silica, being the nearest of these four deposits to Sydney, was selected as the raw material for the proposed plant. CRYSTAL MODIFICATIONS OF SILICA A brief review of the silica minerals may serve to indicate why careful investigation of sources of supply is necessary before actual brick-making is attempted. The crystal modifications of silica, i.e., quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite, all possessing alpha and beta phases, play a most important part in determining the suitability or otherwise of the resulting brick. By heat treatment, any one of these forms of silica may be converted to either of the others. The inversion temperatures (after Fenner) in degrees Centigrade are shown on rage 160.

"The better the information on the rock mass and its fracture system, the better is the basis for any rock mechanical decision that is required during the excavation process. While in conventional tunnelling free view to the tunnel face is available, possibilities are limited for mechanised tunnelling using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). An approach, already formulated in 2005, is used that produces digital photographs through openings in the cutting wheel of a TBM and merges them into a circular three-dimensional image. The 3D image is then used for geometric rock mass characterisation purposes including geological mapping, for example to measure spatial orientations or determine joint spacing. In the paper the basic concept is described together with first results from a pilot test.INTRODUCTIONA three-dimensional image unites digital photographs with spatial information on the objects/surfaces it shows. Since they combine geometric and visual information they are a straightforward source for geometric rock mass analysis and geological mapping. Their obvious benefits among others are: (i) they allow spatial measurements even in inaccessible regions, (ii) they provide objective and reproducible records of the rock mass conditions, and (iii) they increase working safety (Gaich et al. 2004).Pre-requisite for the generation of 3D images is the acquisition of at least two photographs from the region of interest. From the photographs the imaged object surfaces are reconstructed by means of image analysis using methods from photogrammetry (Slama, 1980) and computer vision (Hartley & Zisserman, 2001). MR. J. C. NICHOLSON: The author has discussed his subject in a very thorough manner. One difficulty is the tendency to regard a 'permitted' explosive as a 'safe' explosive. There is no such article as a safe explosive; any explosive is only as safe as the man who handles it. In making up the primer, the method illustrated in the paper is alright for the ordinary explosive but not so for the sheathed explosive, for the sheathing would be punctured. MR. T. L. McCALL: I fee! quite certain that there would be little, if any, trouble from flame shots or misfires if the author's suggestions were carried out. There is a tendency on the part of the shot-firer to over-shoot, so as to bring clown more coal for the miner, and frequently a shot has not sufficient burden imposed upon it. Shooting one hole may not only lessen the burden on an adjacent hole, but may practically release it altogether, in which case the second hole should be fired with a very small charge, or perhaps it might not be necessary to shoot it at all. While the paper refers to shooting in the coal only, it should be under-stood that the instructions given are equally applicable to brushing shots. I do not wish to bring up any contentious point, but would the author say a word on cushioning with air gaps and on multiple shooting? Single shooting in rock might open up a feeder of gas which could be ignited by the ?second shot.

A Canadian company, Sight Power Inc., has developed a revolutionary, fully automated shaft monitoring and inspection system for deep-level mining based on a 3D mobile laser scanning technology. It consists of a special hardware unit and proprietary software with Artificial Intelligence elements for object recognition, features identification and change detection. The main purpose of this system is to significantly improve the safety of underground mining as well as to increase the available hoisting time thus generating substantial additional revenue for the mine.

THE disposal of tailing or waste material, which is generally a very large proportion of the ore treated, is a major problem in the location and operation of any concentrating enterprise and especially so where the life of the operation is expected to continue for many years. Many factors need to be taken into consideration in the selection of a tailing site, chief among which are economical handling of the material, subsequent re-treatment of the tailing, and precaution against stream pollution by waste water. The final location of many mill sites bas been governed largely by the selection of a sui table area for tailing storage. The Sullivan concentrator of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company is situated about three miles from the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B.C., and one of the deciding factors in its location at this distance from the mine was the availability of a suitable area in which tailing could be deposited. In view of the indicated long life of the property, a far-sighted policy bad to be adopted in the matter of tailing storage, for not only would it be necessary to accumulate a huge tonnage of finely ground material, but also reclamation for iron recovery at some future date bad to be considered. Some idea of the extent of the problem may be grasped when it is noted that, by the end of 1938, over 18,000,000 tons of tailing bad been impounded in an area of some 200 acres.

"Abstract - Electrical and structural characteristics of formations favorable for sulfur occurrences in northeast Syria are described using geo-electrical prospecting methods. Simple (VES) and combined (CVES) Schlumberger vertical electrical soundings and geo-electrical profiling using a Wenner configuration were applied to the Teshreen structure. Six profiles (A, B, C, D, E, and F) at the borders of anticlines, where positive and negative structures are joined and salt formations have a tendency to disappear, were studied.Secondary structures, characterized by high apparent resistivity exceeding 3000 Ohm.m were located on each profile using a Wenner profiling configuration. These secondary structures are demonstrated to be favorable for sulfur prospecting by both drilled wells and vertical electrical soundings. Traditional interpretation of the 84 VES measurments is supported by data from 14 CVES measurments. The CVES technique is a powerful tool, due to its improved resolution of the electrical boundaries.Thicknesses and resistivities of the Lower Al-Fares, Al-Garibeh, and Al-Dibbaneh formations were determined through the interpretation of VES measurments. The same VES measurments were then interpreted using the Pichgin method, whereby all the subsurface tectonic features were determined for depth penetration corresponding to AB/2 = 1000 m. The integration of the first and second VES phases creates a clear picture of the subsurface, including tectonic, geometric, and geoelectrical information. In summary, the sulfur occurrences in the research area are controlled by tectonic paths that are well defined by geo-electrical methods. These diverse geo-electrical methods could be used successfully for sulfur prospecting in similar environments."

This paper presents the R&D results on the development of a new knowledge-based system for predicting stope instability and associated unplanned dilution in deep underground mining operations. A new prototype was developed based on databases generated from 3D non-linear elasto-plastic finite element stress analysis, heuristic rules, and case histories. This prototype aims to assist mine operators to make decisions on strategic mine planning and feasibility in a quick and efficient manner thereby minimizing risk on ground failure and optimizing mining costs.

"The mining industry is facing serious long- and short-term challenges relating to uncertain commodity prices, environmental pressures, and margin compression due to rising energy costs. Energy issues, formerly treated as an operating cost, are changing as executives search for longer term solutions to deal with uncertain fossil fuel prices and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, mining executives are increasingly willing to consider introducing a proportion of renewable energy (RE) systems into the mine energy mix. This paper examines how RE can be successfully integrated at mine sites, as well as some of the benefits and barriers to their wider adoption.RÉSUMÉ L’industrie minière fait face à de sérieux défis, à long et à court terme, en raison de l’incertitude des prix des matières premières, des pressions environnementales et des compressions de la marge bénéficiaire dues à la hausse des coûts de l’énergie. Les questions énergétiques, auparavant considérées comme un coût d’exploitation, changent alors que les cadres cherchent des solutions à plus long terme afin de prendre des mesures pour contrer les prix incertains des combustibles fossiles et les émissions des gaz à effet de serre. C’est pourquoi les cadres miniers sont de plus en plus disposés à considérer l’introduction d’une proportion de systèmes d’énergie renouvelable dans l’équation énergétique de la mine. In this work, the rheological behavior of ultra-low cement alumina-based castables with addition of flake graphite and extruded graphite pellets has been investigated. Emphasis has been laid on the influence of the type and amount of carbon additions and the results are compared with corresponding alumina castable samples without any carbon addition. It is found that alumina-based castables with extruded graphite pellets have good rheological behavior and flowability with lower water demand (< 6.3%), and no segregation during the shearing of castable.

"IntroductionThe purpose o f this paper is to review the evidence at hand concerning the earliest centuries of cast iron in Europe, from roughly 1400 A.D. until the second half of the sixteenth century. For the most part it is concerned with the relationship between two technologies which emerged first in China and then later appear in Western lands, gunpowder weapons and iron founding. We should not assume, as I hope to show later in this discussion, that weapons constituted the only product for which the iron founder had any market, but it is clearly true that attempts to produce weapons constituted the most severe technical challenge for the early founder. Firearms appear for the first time in Europe in the 1320s and develop into significant weapons on the field of battle by the end of the century. Theirs is a complex history, subject neither to easy summary treatment nor to simplified models of development. I hope to be able, through the analysis of the evidence concerning cast iron, to show that one important strand in the fabric of gunpowder&apos;s history concerns the materials from which cannon could be made. This question is subject to a number of shades of meaning, because ""cannon"" can be made for many purposes under a profusion of different names, and under sharply varying conditions of use. As a result, the question of materials is frequently really a question of competing materials, and involves a complex set of factors, of which production costs and the ultimate safety of the user seem the most important. Judged in this manner cast iron was an important but unsatisfactory metal for weapons purposes until 1543, at which time English founders learned to make iron muzzle-loading cannon which could rival bronze ordinance in most important performance criteria, but which cost much less to produce. With that event, the history of cast iron and the history of weapons entered into the close relationship that persisted until the advent of rifled artillery made of steel in the middle of the nineteenth century."

"The author will give a capsule history of Benguet Corporation and attempt to identify its operating environment and underlying ""strategy"" until 1974, when the company&apos;s management assumed office. The company&apos;s operating environment and ""interim strategy"" from 1975 to 1980 will be described. The discussion will cover an environmental forecast and define the company&apos;s"" strategy for survival"" for the balance of this century.IntroductionIn December last year, I was asked to deliver a pa per for the management lecture series a t the Asian Institute of Management in Manila. The paper was entitled "" The 1970&apos;s: A Decade of Disaster For New Mining Projects"" . In that paper, it was my task to review the results of new mining projects in the Philippines during the previous decade. The task was not a happy one, for the results themselves were not only unhappy, but disastrous on a scale unprecedented in Philippine history. Out of a total of 17 major mining project s involving an aggregate capital investment in excess o f US $2 billion during the 1970s, only three project s have been profitable, and all the rest have either gone "" belly up"" or are teetering on the very edge of financial disaster.It is in the context of this shocking record of widespread financial dislocation in the Philippine mining industry, (which in varying degrees appears to have been paralleled in virtually every other country in the world where mining is an important sector of the economy) that I address myself tonight to the theme of this symposium. My paper is entitled ""Risk Management Strategy in Mining"" and it is sub titled ""Can Benguet Corporation Survive to Celebrate its Centennial in 2003?"". I have inserted the word ""Strategy"" and added the subtitle, because I wish to make it clear first, that my presentation to you tonight will be focused exclusively on the strategic aspect s of risk management, and second that I will limit myself to Benguet&apos;s own ""in-house"" experience and perspectives on this subject. I would caution you therefore, to consider my views within this restricted framework, and in light of the particular and sometimes peculiar circumstances within which Benguet Corporation operates."

"A full-scale demonstration unit of Tampella&apos;s LIFAC desulphurization process was tested at SaskPower&apos;s Poplar River Power Station Unit No. I. The test program included a series of parametric tests, followed by a 1500 hour operational evaluation. This paper summarizes the results of the test program, and SaskPower&apos;s economic evaluation which led to selection of the LlFAC process for SaskPower&apos;s 300 MW Shand power station. IntroductionOne of the major influences on the coal mining industry today is public and legislative response to acid rain. When sulphur-bearing fuels such as coal are burned, the sulphur oxidizes to sulphur dioxid e (S00 which, if uncontrolled, enters the atmosphere as one of the by-products of combustion. S02 then combines with water in the air to form an acid and acid rain results. Combustion also produces nitrogen oxides (N0J which can combine with water in the air forming nitrogen based acid , also contributing to acid rain.Acid rain has become a significant international concern. Newspapers have reported on dying forests, dead lakes and crumbling statues. Papers also include articles professing that the physical results of acid rain are vastly overstated. In the United States, a IO-year, Y2-billion dollar study called the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) was commissioned to evaluate the effects of acid rain. Even this extensive scientific study did not resolve the controversy. Despite disagreement over the quantitative effects of acid rain, there is no doubt that public concern over the issue is widespread and deeply felt.In response to this concern, legislators throughout the world have reacted with programs that restrict the emission s o f SO, and NO,. To industries involved in the supply and use of coal, the impact of these legislative programs has been extensive. United States power plants will be spending 10 billion dollars in the next decade for flue gas clean-up equipment. Even all this new equipment will not stem the tide of change to low sulphur coals and to “clean “natural gas. The following summarizes legislative actions taken for Canada and the United States."

"Tunnel boring machines have been tried in underground mining applications as early as 1957. Although tunneling machines hardly threaten to supplant traditional drill-blast-muck operations for drifting, the latest modern machines offer substantial improvements in progress rates over traditional methods under certain conditions.An evaluation guide is offered which identifies conditions that favour machine boring. Different types of costs related to the use of a tunnel machine are discussed. The advantages of the tunnel machine over the traditional method are reviewed. IntroductionThe first tunnel boring machine ever used in a mine was in Quebec in the year 1957. Although less than successful at the time, this experiment served to illustrate the mining industry&apos; s willingness to try new ideas. Since 1957, the manufacture of tunnel boring machines has developed into a full-size industry. Most contractors in Europe and North America will now consider the use of a tunnel boring machine first on any long tunnel that can have a circular section.The modern tunneling machine offers a great potential to the mining industry. Just as the blasthole and raise drill machines have revolutionized mining in the last decade, it is expected that tunnel boring machines will make an equal impact in the future.This is not to suggest that tunnel boring machines will replace explosives in the foreseeable future, but they can supplement drill-and-blast operations. In areas where long drifts, inclines, declines or cross-cuts are needed in a hurry, the tunnel boring machines offer the fastest way to a production return on investment. Figure 1 shows the range of production that two types of tunnel machines have produced as compared with conventional excavation methods in various ground conditions.Rotary hard-rock tunnel boring machines (Fig. 2) commonly produce progress rates in excess of 20 metres per day in uniform ground from 300 to over 2,000 kgl cm2 in unconfined compression strength . These averages are for the completed tunnels. One 7. I6-metre-diameter tunnel boring machine just completed a 1O.7-km tunnel in hard rock of 700 to 2,800 kg/cm>, The last eight months of production averaged 30 metres per day."

Direct smelting of copper concentrate to blister copper has the advantages of energy saving and environmental protection. There has been a lot of effort invested in process development including test work and theoretic analysis in the past half century. However, the process has only been applied commercially to a few smelters that treat chalcocite types of copper concentrate. The main limitation to treating chalcopyrite types of copper concentrate is high copper content in smelting slag and low direct copper recovery. Thus intensive slag cleaning is needed. In this paper, the thermodynamic analysis was mainly carried out for the multiphase equilibrium of direct to blister copper smelting for both chalcopyrite and chalcocite concentrates. The practical problems in direct to blister copper smelting, which are mainly in copper content in slag, are clarified. The operational window of slag composition for different temperatures and oxygen partial pressure for the treatment of chalcocite type concentrates is identified. The process operation optimization for the blending of chalcocite, pyrite and chalcopyrite concentrates was done. INTRODUCTION The extractive metallurgy of copper can be divided into two broad groups of processes, namely, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, and the former is dominant. About 80% of copper in the world is produced by pyrometallurgy (Christopher et al., 2006). The first stage of conventional copper pyrometallurgy processing is to smelt copper concentrate to copper matte composed of FeS and Cu2S with slagging to remove a proportion of the iron (Gargul, Boryczko, & Bukowska, 2017). The smelting processes include bath and flash smelting. The second stage of the process is to convert copper matte to blister copper. In most cases, the copper matte is converted in Peirce Smith (P-S) converters, which are batch operations (Kubiszewski, 2015). The P-S converting can be divided into two periods, slagging and copper blowing. During slagging period, FeS in copper matte is oxidized to FeO, which reacts with silica flux forming slag. When the iron content in matte is less than 1%, copper begins to oxidize and reduce to form blister copper (Kucharski, Sak, Madej, Wędrychowicz, & Mróz, 2013).

"A dynamic ventilation-modeling package, VREX, was used to simulate the mine activities through tracking the equipment movements in underground workings and determine the airflow demand for a new production scenario in a ventilation-on-demand (VOD) system. It incorporates the mine development data from a discrete event simulation and balances the ventilation network using the CANVENT ventilation solver. A case study was performed to demonstrate the capabilities of the software, evaluate the performance of the network and determine the potential energy savings for implementing VOD in a deep mine operation.INTRODUCTIONThe ventilation cost of an underground mine can be significant—up to 50% of the mine’s energy consumption could be used to run fans and provide heat/refrigeration to meet the specified production environment for workers and equipment. The VOD system has proven to be more efficient in operating the fans and supplying the amount of air corresponding to the mine activities taking place in underground workings (Hardcastle, Kocsis, & O’Connor, 2006). In order to properly solve and evaluate the VOD system, a dynamic ventilation modeling software VREX—the ventilation rules engine has been developed to simulate the mine activities and determine the airflow demand for each production scenario within an operation period (Dasys & Cameron, 2011).VREX is a decision support tool, backed by the CANVENT mine ventilation solver (Li, Kocsis, & Hardcastle, 2009), for determining the outcomes of network configuration changes over time. The software incorporates the mine development data with ventilation modeling through the discrete event simulation (DES) performed by SimMineTM. As it simulates the air requirements for different vehicles and activities, VREX can evaluate both the performance of the ventilation system and the potential economic benefits of making operational or technological changes (Pritchard, 2010). For example, the model can be used to assess the economic and environmental impacts arising from modifying regulations to support the use of electric or lower emission vehicles. The combination of DES and ventilation modeling provides a new technology to generate the production scenarios according to mine schedules and activities and to determine the potential benefits for various levels of ventilation control, such as time interval and work shift change."

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15,000 t/a magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China, Site construction commenced in February 2005 with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005, Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005, Since that time ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken, This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

"I ASSUME that any effort on my part to deal with the question of the importance of the mining industry is going to be largely an exercise in preaching to the converted, but there are one or two aspects that I'd like to particularly mention.The first is that, in terms of almost all factors, the mining industry is a very important industry in Canada. It is important in terms of employment in relation to the gross national product of Canada and it is particularly important in the international trade of Canada. So far from being insignificant domestically, it is also an extremely important factor in the international picture. That's an important point to bear in mind, because as we talk about all the other matters we never can lose sight of the fact that mining management always has to be conscious of its international competitive position. It is something that one forgets at one's peril, and to a somewhat greater extent than is true of many other industries, those managements have to compete in an international context for their markets, to some extent for their people for specialized skills and of course for finance. In the evolution of domestic policies it is a very, very perilous step to take to impair that competitive ability of the domestic mining industry."

The HBMS reverb furnace in Flin Flon was originally designed in the late 1920s. Throughout the decades campaign life has been increased due to operational practices, technological changes and brick quality improvements. In recent decades the campaign life had been extended such that a complete rebuild was scheduled every 3 years. The latest furnace rebuild and start up has been after a campaign life of nearly 6 years. Brick construction methods and techniques along with furnace operational practices allow the present campaign to be double that of the historical campaign length.
