"Uranium, thorium and yttrium have been recovered, since the 1950s, from pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates occurring in the basal sediments of the Quirke syncline at Elliot Lake. Gold, an element of interest in similar type deposits occurring worldwide, is a very minor constituent of the Elliot Lake conglomerates because the provenance area of the sediments had few gold-bearing rocks.Uranium, thorium and rare elements are found in resistate and diagenetic minerals occurring in the matrix of the conglomerates. The valuable elements are recovered from the acid soluble minerals during the milling process.Large uranium reserves occur in mines found on both limbs of the Quirke syncline. Major reserves are being developed on the South Limb of the syncline, where the Stanleigh Mine, among four past-producers, has been reactivated.IntroductionUranium and thorium commonly occur in anomalous amounts in coarse basal sediments. Radioactivity in basal conglomeratic sediments is generally attributable to resistate minerals, that rarely occur in concentrations high enough to be of economic significance. One type of basal conglomerate found worldwide, in Precambrian cratonic basins, has uranium or uranium and gold concentrations large enough to be of economic interest. Principal among the occurrences are the pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates of the Huronian in Canada, of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and at Jacobina in Brazil.The uranium and gold mineralization of these conglomerates was derived from provenance areas where both elements occurred and were later concentrated through source degradation and deposition in placers in a reducing environment. Only the Huronian conglomerates, generally much richer in uranium but with negligible gold, have been exploited solely for their uranium content.The uraniferous conglomerates of the Huronian at Elliot Lake, 500 km north of Toronto, continue to represent a major world source and supply of uranium concentrate."

The main importance of acicular ferrite microstructures arises from their desired combination of mechanical properties in comparison with the bainite and ferrite-pearlite microstructures. Several factors affect the microstructural transition from bainite microstructure into the acicular ferrite one. As is well established any factor corrupting the prior austenitc grain boundaries nucleation potential, such as the thin layer of allotriomorph ferrite and the austenitc deformation inhomogenities may promote the acicular ferrite formation instead of bainite. Accordingly, this study deals with the effects of the aforementioned features on the acicular ferrite formation in low carbon microalloyed steel. The results indicate that the formation of strain-induced ferrite at the prior austenite grain boundaries accompanied by deformation inhomogenities in the austenite grains change the effectiveness of allotriomorph ferrite on acicular ferrite formation from active to inert one.

Underground caverns stability and excavatability of rock masses are of significance in geotechnical engineering, in both design and construction stages. Risks associated with underground group caverns of Houziyan hydropower station in southwestern China are growing as a result of continuous excavation-induced unloading. To improve our understanding of the underground caverns instability and resolve the complex subsurface conditions of the highly fractured rock mass, a high resolution microseismic monitoring system was established in the deep underground caverns, pursuing the relationship between the measured data about microseismic activity and excavation damage zones of surrounding rock mass. Through analyzing the tempo-spatial distribution of microseismic activity, excavation damage zones and potential risk regions in underground caverns were identified. Furthermore, the correlation between microseismic activity and pre-existing geological structures, as well as traditional monitoring was analyzed. In order to validate the correlation between seismicity and potential slip surface of underground caverns, a model was implemented into numerical code to further evaluate the deformation and stability of surrounding rock mass. The monitoring results demonstrate that microseismic events mainly occur at high stress concentration regions, which coincides with the results obtained from numerical analysis. Therefore, the comprehensive method incorporating microseismic monitoring and numerical analysis, as well as traditional monitoring and filed observation has been proven to be very promising in deformation and even instability prediction of surrounding rock mass in underground caverns subject to delineation of potential slip surfaces and excavation damage zones.

In many modem concentrators the use of supervisory systems in their grinding circuits has meant more consistent operations and increases in capacity. These systems rely on a series of specific algorithms that uses different pieces of information and drives actions over the process. One of these algorithms is the ball mill overload detection, which plays an important role in any supervisory strategy designed to maximize ore feed rate in wet grinding circuits. This paper introduces different overload detection algorithms, and compares them in terms of the time taken to detect the overload condition. This comparative analysis is based on highly noisy power draw measurements obtained in an industrial plant.

"The Adanac molybdenum porphyry deposit near Atlin, in northwestern British Columbia, was discovered in 1905. It was explored extensively between 1967 and 1980.The deposit is within a complex, multi-phase, quartz monzonite stock that is a satellite of the post-accretionary, Surprise Lake Batholith. Biotite K-Ar dates range from 703 ± 2.4 Ma to 71.6 ± 2.1 Ma, indicating a Late Cretaceous age of emplacement.The deposit comprises an irregular-shaped ring or halo peripheral to a quartz monzonite porphyry dome, or ""cupola': The shape of the ring, and of a smal~ fine-grained quartz monzonite intrusion, and the presence of higher-grade mineralimtion on the eastern flank of the cupola, suggest partial control by a preminera/ structure. The deposit is truncated by a steep, northwesterly dipping, normal fault (Adera Fault) that down-dropped the northern half of the deposit by a minimum of 100 mThe deposit lacks strong zonal alteration but there are narrow envelopes of potassic alteration around some veins and local zones of intense wall-rock silicification. There is considerable retrograde alteration along postminera/ faults and fractures.Molybdenite occurs in veins and fractures, many of which are relatively flat-lying. They occur in all phases of quartz monzonite. Molybdenum is the only element of economic significance. There are vein and skarn occurrences with tungsten, tin, lead, zinc and precious metals peripheral to the deposit.In 1981, Placer Development Limited reported an ""undiluted mineable mineral reserve"" of 151 971 000 tonnes grading 0.063% Mo at a cutoff grade of 0.04% Mo and a strip ratio of 1.5:1."

The McGill component of the consortium contributed detailed examination of the electrokinetic properties of the constituent minerals, primarily pentlandite and serpentine. Mineral specimens were derived from an ore sample; mineralogical examination showed the serpentine was predominantly clinochrysotile, a fibrous mineral responsible for much of the flotation separation problem. The study included design of a novel sedimentation potential measuring device to classify the surface charge of the ore and electrophoresis measurements on single and mixed minerals which progressively approached flotation conditions. The sedimentation potential measurements provided a general association between surface charge and the visual state of aggregation as a function of pH. The electrophoresis experiments started with single minerals in a background of indifferent electrolyte and progressed to mixed minerals in a background of supernatant derived from an ore sample. The single mineral tests supported the suspected electrostatic interaction, i.e., hetero-coagulation, at flotation pH 9-10. The mixed mineral tests demonstrated this interaction and also revealed hetero-coagulation with Mg(OH)2 precipitates, derived from the supernatant. This interpretation was confirmed by optical and electron beam imaging. A series of agents, CMC, polyphosphate, soda ash, EDTA, were examined to disperse the system. To accommodate the small mass of single mineral available a novel turbidity measurement using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer was introduced. Selected conditions were used in contact angle and small-scale flotation tests.

"The influence of lead ions on zinc electrowinning process was investigated by means of electrochemical noise measurements (ENMs) and cyclic voltammetry in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. All electrochemical experiments were performed in sulphuric acid electrolyte containing different lead ion concentrations as impurity. Lead was added in six trace levels between 0.05–0.8 mg/L in the bath. The lead content of the zinc deposits was dependent on the introduced lead concentrations. The overpotential associated with zinc electrodeposition shifted to higher values with the increase of lead concentration in the solution. An appropriate correlation was found between the different concentrations of lead in the electrolyte and the morphology of zinc deposit by ENM. The results showed that the increase of lead ion concentrations is generally accompanied with the decrease of skew and increase of kurtosis values that could be related to the morphology of zinc deposit. Effectively, the morphology changes from well-defined hexagonal platelets to large hexagonal, layered platelets and finally to non-symmetric refined crystalline structure, respectively.INTRODUCTION In commercial zinc electrowinning, zinc oxide is leached from the roasted calcine with an aqueous acid sulfate electrolyte. "The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the convergence measurements in a drift excavated in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. The drift axis is in the direction of the major principal horizontal stress whereas the stress state is quasi-isotropic in the drift’s section. The initial geometry of the drift being circular, the anisotropic character of the deformation is taken into account by assuming that the drift shape evolves in an elliptical shape. The convergence measurement data on six different points around the drift are analyzed to identify the main axes of the deformation ellipse, following the methodology proposed by Vu et al. (2013, Rock Mech Rock Eng, 46, 231-246). Then, using the semi-empirical law proposed by Sulem et al. (1987, Int J Rock Mech Min Sci, 24, 145–154), the convergence evolution is fitted independently for each axis of the ellipse. This method permits to distinguish two effects: the face advance effect and the time-dependent behavior of the ground. The results for the two directions of the ellipse axes show very close values for the parameters describing the time-dependent properties of the ground, the distance of influence of the face, and the extension of the decompressed zone around the gallery. Such model can provide valuable insights for predictions of the convergence evolution in the long-term. INTRODUCTIONDeep disposal of radioactive waste has been studied in France for more than two decades. The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) began in 2000 the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) with the main goal of demonstrating the feasibility of a geological repository in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Several research programs have taken place to improve the knowledge of the rock properties and its response to the excavation progress. The optimization of supports design for long-term behavior is an important point to develop. A network of experimental drifts has been constructed with variations on: excavation method, structure geometry, supports system and orientations with respect to in-situ principal stresses’ directions. In each drift different sections have been instrumented to monitor the convergence evolution and the rock deformation. Continuous monitoring of the excavated zone around the drifts revealed the development of a fractured zone (extensional and shear fractures) induced by the excavation. The extent of this fractured zone depends on both the drift orientation and the in-situ stress field (Armand et al., 2014). Indeed, the fractures distribution has an important influence on the convergence of the drifts."

Gibraltar Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine in central British Columbia. The stability and potential failure modes of pit walls in the Granite Pit are controlled by the orientations of joints and faults. The structural geology also has an impact on as-mined bench geometries. Geotechnical mapping and surveying were conducted using stereo photographs and photogrammetry software. Detailed digital terrain models were constructed to determine the pit wall geometry and the locations and orientations of larger structural features. The pit wall geometry is compared to conventional survey results and the mapped structures are compared to results from a nearby geotechnical borehole.

A good understanding of the behavior of broken rock helps to make more informed decisions regarding slope stability and waste dump issues in mines. The cohesion coefficient of rock has little influence on the strength of broken rock; therefore, a criterion based on friction and cohesion of intact materials does not provide an accurate analysis for the strength of broken rock. This paper illustrates the effective strength of broken rock through a brief literature review about failure of intact rock and rock masses. The complete stress- strain curve and some important points of residual strength of rock are summarized in this paper.

INTRODUCTION ONE of the greatest and most interesting problems of economic geology is to discover criteria bearing on the persistence of ore in depth. It is a question which is very much to the fore in connection with many of our important mines in British Columbia, and, as is to be expected, it is a most controversial one. The present paper, summarizing the views of the writers concerning the possibilities, in some of the mining districts of the Province, for the persistence of commercial ore to greater depths than have been, or are at present, mined, is offered as a basis for a general discussion on the subject and to call attention to the need for renewed study and research on the problem. Sooner or later-at some depth or other-individual ore-shoots become impoverished and bottom. In many mines where this has happened, either at the same or at a lower horizon, another ore-shoot, which had no surface outcrop, has been encountered and has continued downward until it, in turn, has pinched out. The Kolar (Mysore, India) gold field, for instance, presents interesting examples of this recurrence of ore-shoots at depth (1). For many years these mines have been under the management of Messrs. John Taylor and Sons. On more than one occasion they have persisted in sinking or drifting on barren quartz or along a narrow fracture for many hundreds of feet before values were again encountered. Their earliest experiment in such bold development took place at a depth comparable to that at which most mines in British Columbia are considered to be bottomed. In the past, is has been concluded that the ores in British Columbian mines do not go below approximately 2,000 feet, and to that depth only in a few instances. Consideration of the depth to which ores have been mined in the Province appears to support this view. The figures shown in the accompaning table have been gathered from various sources and are approximate.

The present work describes a study of the separation of terbium and dysprosium from heavy RE concentrate through a solvent extraction circuit in a counter-current system. As the efficiency of the REE extraction by acid extractants rises with the increase of the atomic number of the element, the aim of this work is to extract the elements with higher atomic number maintaining Tb and Dy in the aqueous phase. Thus, terbium was separated first with subsequent separation of dysprosium. The experiments were carried out by using IONQUEST®801 as the extractant and a REE-hydrochloric liquor as feed solution. The optimum operational circuit in terbium separation was comprised of 37 stages: extraction, scrubbing, stripping, and solvent washing. For the dysprosium separation 39 stages were required. Terbium separation over 92% with over 95% purity and a Dy separation over 97% with over 95% purity were obtained.

"A correlation has been established between the oxygen demand of Brunswick Mining and Smelting ore and flotation results at the bench, pilot plant and operating plant scale. A method of dete""1llining the aeration requirement of sulphide ores on the basis of this correlation is presented. It is shown that abraded iron from grinding media plays an important role in aeration and flotation. Laboratory grinding must therefore be conducted under controlled conditions with suitable grinding media in order to obtain the true aeration requirement of the ore.A method of evaluating aerator efficiency, also based on oxygen demand measurements, has been used successfully at Brunswick Mining to design pilot plant and full-scale aeration systems.1. Optimization of the mining sequence in terms of economics (maximizing net present value) often leads to multi-front mining methods generating pillars. Significant resources are tied up in these pillars, but mining them is often challenging. In order to improve our understanding of rock mass behaviour while extracting these pillars, an extensive monitoring program has been designed and implemented at Vale?s Coleman mine (Sudbury, Canada). The program focuses on existing and new technologies that have potential for monitoring deformation and rock mass property changes. It includes both active and passive methods: gravimeters, multi-point borehole extensometers, fiber optic strain meters, fixed and portable three-component seismic arrays, borehole imaging and sonic logging, and, repeated LiDAR surveys. This paper reports results from an initial project phase, when only a small amount of mining has taken place. The goal was to test and compare technologies in order to assess their sensitivity, accuracy, repeatability and suitability for underground mining conditions. Value is gained by having a broad range of monitoring devices running side by side, enabling comparisons and benchmarking.

Most of automotive magnesium applications are presently produced by high-pressure die casting processes, For further expansion of the alloy usage in automobiles, novel-manufacturing processes needs to be developed, In this study, squeeze casting of AM50 alloy was carried out using a hydraulic press with an applied pressure of 70 MPa, Tensile properties and fracture behavior of the squeeze-cast AM50 were characterized in comparison with the die cast counterpart, The squeeze-cast AM50 alloy exhibits virtually no porosity in the microstructure evaluated by optical microscopy, The results of tensile testing indicate that the improved tensile properties for the squeeze-cast samples over the conventional high-pressure die-cast parts, The analysis of tensile behavior shows that the strain-hardening rate during the plastic deformation of the squeeze-cast specimens is constantly higher than that of the die-cast specimens. The SEM fractography evidently reveals the ductile fracture features of the squeeze-cast alloy AM50.
