"For the requirements of the mining company “Rudnik-Rudnik”, engaged in undergr-ound exploitation of polymetallic ore and lead, zinc and copper concentrates production, the Department of Computer Application of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade, designed a computer supported and integrated information-management system. This paper presents a concept of this system covering both monitoring and management of production in ""Rudnik-Rudnik"".The ""Rudnik"" Rudnik, Yugoslavia is a mining company, engaged in underground exploitation of polymetallic ore and production of ore, zinc and copper concentrate as well as other metals such as silver, bismuth and cadmium. This mining company runs stable business activities and undergoes a permanent growth of valuable production volume.The basic characteristics of production-technical system of ""Rudnik"" company are: uniform and up-todate technical-technological solutions: linking of production chain from underground exploitation of ore to flotation, namely final product - concentrate of lead, zinc and copper; complete mechanization of production; relatively low level of computer technics implementation; namely, ununiformed implementation of different application of computer-supported information technologies in production and business activities of the Company.These are the assumptions on the basis of which the management of the Company made a decision, in 1999, to upgrade information-management functions through development and application of modern integrated and computer-supported production-business information-management system (hereinafter: IMS, namely IMS Rudnik). For this purpose the Company requested the Department of Computer Application, Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade to make the Project on IMS for their needs."

"The dispersion of gas into bubbles is an essential feature of flotation machines. Three measurements have typically been used to describe the dispersion: superficial gas velocity (Jg), gas holdup and bubble size along with the derived quantity, bubble surface area flux. Measurement devices continue to be developed. The McGill Jg sensor based on accumulating bubbles by natural buoyancy comprises a tube with a valve and pressure transducer (Figure 1). The tube is immersed at a desired location and depth (H1) in a flotation cell. On closing the valve pressure increases to a maximum (P1) when the tube is full of air. The Jg is estimated from the slope of pressure-time curve (dP/dt).The relationship between Jg and dP/dt is derived from first principles. Testing the relationship is difficult in a flotation machine as the spatial variation in Jg is generally not known. This problem is overcome using a specially designed experimental setup and the estimated Jg is shown to equal the known Jg.The derivation reveals the importance of bulk density (?b). The sensor was modified to provide an estimate of ?b (Figure 2). A second tube was added immersed to a different depth (H2) and kept full of accumulated air giving a pressure P2. The estimate of ?b is given by (P1-P2)/(H1-H2) (i.e., at the end of collecting the pressure-time data). This two-tube sensor also helps dampen process noise as illustrated by a sudden change in level when collecting the pressure-time curve. Both the original and modified versions have been widely used in plant test work."

"Discrete Element Method (DEM) has become a standard tool to simulate grinding mills in order to gain information about load behaviour, power drawn, etc. However, parameters necessary to run a simulation are not always readily available. For example, the coefficient of restitution used in DEM simulation from the literature ranges from 0.1 to 0.9 due to lack of accurate values. The lack of correct input parameters results in the fact that some simulation parameters are adjusted to match the simulation prediction with the experimental results. It is inappropriate to tune one single parameter arbitrarily in order to fit the prediction with experimental results. The correct value of parameters for DEM simulation should be established, and rigorous validation on simulation results by DEM needs to be done.The objectives of the ongoing project are to measure the coefficient of restitution at conditions analogous to grinding practice. Equipment has been built to measure the coefficient of restitution. A typical case of impact test showing the vertical position of a ball as a function of time is presented in Figure 1. The coefficient of restitution between steel ball of different sizes and the targets including steel liner (e = 0.91), mild steel block (e = 0.57) and rubber liner (e = 0.7) have been measured. The coefficient of restitution reduces to 0.38-0.52 when there is a layer of coal particles (1-2 mm) on the steel liner. The effects of ball size, drop height on coefficient of restitution are investigated. Then a DEM code is developed of several contact models to simulate the impact process. This code can reveal details on velocities (translational and rotational) and forces (normal and tangential) during the brief impact interval. Figure 2 is a comparison of the rebound rotational velocity between experiment and prediction by different models. The results can be used as DEM input and to assess contact models."

"The research study has been devoted to point out the better way to process a colemanite concentrate characterised by a high content of two kind of As sulphides (realgar and orpiment) finely disseminated in the matrix of the boron mineral.Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses have been carried out to determine all the mineralogical constituents and to evaluate their distribution, frequency and mutual relationships.There is a not neglectable part of realgar highly disseminated into the colemanite crystals.The orpiment recurs in small acicular crystals of 20÷30 µm in length and 5 µm in width, very difficult to liberate from the colemanite mineral particles.The colemanite concentrate, in fact, has been addressed to a chemical plant which products were boric acid and gypsum, the contaminated by As. It was unacceptable for further applications and very dangerous if rejected in the environment.Grinding tests under dry and wet conditions have been carried out in order to evaluate the liberation modality of the As sulphide minerals from the colemanite.Some difficulties have been overtaken in order to obtain a selective liberation of the As sulphides from the colemanite even if a certain decreasing in As grade in the higher size classes has been registered.All the comminution products have been analysed by SEM monitoring the liberation degree of the mineralogical constituents.Flotation tests have been carried out after different comminution flow sheet adopting different modulating conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters:• collector concentration versus contaminants concentration (As minerals) in the froths;• kind and quantity of the frothing agent to maximise the mineral recovery in the froths;• kind and quantity of the modulating agents to maximise the selectivity of the process;• conditioning modalities in order to obtain a suitable dispersion of fines and to avoid segregation of Asbearingparticles together with colemanite ones;• solid/liquid ratio of the pulp to minimise the water flow into the plant."

"To design sustainable products that can be recycled with high resource efficiency, low environmental impact and economic feasibility, the choice of materials and materials combinations, made in the design stage, is fundamental. The products we design, manufacture and use now will be the resources of the future. Designers are able to select materials for a product according to the many functional requirements they must fulfil. But they have a limited knowledge of the recycling processes and its requirements regarding quality of the secondary material streams. Resource Engineers have to manage the processing of these streams, that are becoming more complex with the increasing variety of materials and decreasing size of components. After mechanical separation of the materials streams resulting from shredding of EOL (endof- life) products, there is always a degree of contamination, from two possible causes:Incomplete liberation: the bonds between different materials combined in a component are not completely destroyed by shredding, resulting in some particles containing two or more materials attached;Separation efficiency: the mechanical separation processes are not able to separate perfectly the many material particles; there are always a number of foreign particles in the recovered streams.Sometimes, those contaminants cannot be removed by the industrial metallurgic recycling processes, and a more serious problem occurs when the contamination levels compromise the recycling of the material stream by lowering its quality (i.e. the properties of the recycled material will be lower due to the contamination). As a consequence, the material must be diluted in virgin raw material and/or used in a less demanding application (downgrading), causing resource depletion and increased energy use, waste production and recycling costs. In order to make the best choice of materials combinations for a product, a systematic approach is necessary, that can close the gap between the knowledge areas of Product Design and Recycling Technology."

"In disintegrating solid ores with mineral values disseminated in them, one of the principal tasks is to selectively separate valuable mineral particles from the matrix in which they reside, striving at the same time to keep their natural shape and size as intact as possible.The conventional mechanical disintegration methods do not meet this most important requirement in full. The other major objective here is to reduce electric power consumption during the fragmentation stage, since up to 65 per cent of the total power consumption at concentrators processing ores of non-ferrous, ferrous, rare, and precious metals is spent on disintegration steps.Numerous experiments conducted on dozens of ore types (tin, tungsten, and many others, as well as on rock containing diamonds, rubies, emeralds, etc.) have invariably demonstrated by far superior integrity of mineral values as compared with that obtained by mechanical as well as other types of disintegration.However, the process remains as power-intensive as ever which is due to the imperfect nature of the electro-technical devices that convert the network electric current into high-voltage electric impulses responsible for the disintegration process.The maximum capacity attained in disintegrating the hardest materials from 40 mm to 2 mm size in a single operating chamber with four high-voltage electrodes does not exceed 1.0-1.5 t/h. Attempts at increasing the number of electrodes and the capacity of the operating chamber have failed so far because of high overall dimensions and mass of the electrical part of the installation supplying the chamber with pulsating current, as well as of the commutation requirements. At the same time, a number of overseas operations have reported a significant breakthrough in their attempts to reduce dozens of times the overall dimensions and mass of the discharge impulse generating installation (EIS), which enables us to contemplate to increase the capacity of the EIS at least ten times in the nearest future. Yet, even with the currently achieved capacity of the EIS, these installations have found wide use in geological surveying, precious and semi-precious stones production, in grinding super hard materials, etc., since they provide spectacular selectivity of disintegration and thus the integrity of valuable mineral crystals."

"Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The knowledge of aggregate structure can lead to better understanding and control of many solid-liquid separation processes (sedimentation, filtration, thickening and flotation). Many authors highlight the importance of structural properties (i.e. floc density) for different industrial applications.This approach was applied to achieve the flotation of molybdenum precipitate obtained with organic collector a- benzoin oxime for molar ratio 1:2. Flotation tests were carried out at lab and pilot scale with rigorous control of the size distribution of bubbles and the values of dissipation energy in the systems.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions, which were deduced from experimental data of laser sizer devices and optic microscopy pictures of precipitate. The boundary fractal dimensions Df of large aggregates allows the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs (elementary germs-microflocs-flocs). The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with structuration or breakage phases.The destruction process characterised by a fractal dimension Dg controls the final size distribution. The floc destruction occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy (0.02 – 0.05 W/kg). The relation between Dg and the system dissipation energy Et (for various energy E dissipated in the agitation cell) involves the different breakage mechanisms of aggregates in function of the aggregation bonds (Fig. 1).Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles (elementary germs or/and microfloc according to E), and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle attachment during the precipitate flotation in column. Yet, very small bubbles, which increase the collision probability, would make the flotation feed rate decrease. The optima ratio between superficial gas and feed velocities are determined for bubble size and flotation results control at pilot scale. Thus, it is possible to providing the catastrophically changes of precipitate column flotation by using the following established experimental relation: the mean diameter d of the flocs under the action of dissipated energy Et follows a power like law (d~Et -0.5). This allows estimating the size distribution of flocs for the E values which can appear in column."

"The bubble size distribution plays a fundamental role in flotation kinetics. Nowadays it is possible to measure the bubble size distribution, gas holdup and superficial gas velocity by using specialized equipment developed for this purpose. In this article a methodology is presented for estimating the kinetic rate constant using a known particle and bubble size distributions. The attachment and detachment probabilities were modelled from three matrixes. The first matrix represents particle size distribution, the second was named the probability matrix, and the third is the bubble size distribution. Using laboratory data, it has been possible to estimate the flotation rate constant as a function of operating conditions and both the bubble and particle size distributions. The model tested at laboratory scale achieved a quadratic correlation coefficient equal to 0.97. This methodology could be used in the operation and control of the flotation, when in the near future we have industrial equipment that allows in-line measurement, in real time, of gas dispersion and bubble size distribution. knowing particle size distribution, it will be possible to manipulate the operating flotation cell conditions, in order to modify the bubble size distribution and find the bubble distribution that maximizes flotation kinetics. Furthermore, knowing the bubble size distribution, the grinding operator will be able to look for the particle size distribution that produces the maximum flotation kinetics. In order to do this, the operator will have to modify the solids percentage fed to the hydrocyclone cluster, modify the apex/vortex ratio, etc. Finally, this article shows that the maximum flotation speed is reached when the particle size distibution slope is equal to the bubble size distribution slope."

Water is a strategic resource for the mining industry. The rising cost has forced the industry to become more efficient in their use, reduce and recycle waste as much as possible. The importance of having a reliable water balance is increasingly urgent, because the resource is scarce and vital to the sustainability of human life, animal and ecosystem. Conventional flowmeters can suffer disruptions or failures by corrosion, fouling, presence of elements in the water as acids, salts and suspended solids. Use of radiotracers is advantageous to determine fluid velocities that are transported through pipes, as they are detectable by means of the radiation emitted, the same way for surface flows, such as natural watercourses and drainage from tailings dams, fluorescent tracers are those with the best advantages. For velocity measurements in pipelines a Iodine-131 tracer solution, around 5 mCi was injected into the suction of the pumps. The technique used is the transit time between detectors at known distances and determining the time of passage of the radiotracer. For measurements of surface fluxes using the fluorescent tracer Rhodamine WT by tracer dilution technique, injecting the tracer at a constant rate and measuring it known concentration diluted downstream. This work has been performed in Minera Los Pelambres, located in the IV Region of Chile, measuring the flow rate pumped from 12 pools with 1-7 pumps operating, obtaining speeds of 0.56 to 2.62 m/s. In pumping wells three facilities have been measured at speeds of 0.111-0.223 m/s, plus six surface flows with flow rates of 8.45 to 357.2 L/s.

Cyanide is widely used gold lixiviant for hydrometallurgical processes. The resulting tails contain complex toxic compounds. With reference to this, the protection of the environment should be the major issue. A complete detoxification of cyanides before disposal, a partial detoxification to the allowable concentrations and a disposal of tails at a polygon followed by the detoxification of excess water into the environment are offered as an environmentally friendly way of disposal. However, a complete detoxification of the cyanidation tails does not give the required results due to the presence of toxic compounds, cyanides and thiocyanates in tailings ponds. This is due to adsorption-desorption process occurring between solid and liquid phases. A partial detoxification is used to down cyanide to the allowable concentrations, which are safe to the environment. The storage of tails without detoxification is mainly used at low concentrations of toxic compounds in the disposed tails. With reference to this, water recycling is practiced by Russian plants in order to reduce as much as possible or almost eliminate toxic effluents into the environment. Fresh water is applied if necessary and to make up for water losses, with 8-12% of total water supply. This allows for the stability of water balance and the decrease of consumption of the reagents applied. The conditioning technologies of water recycling followed by regeneration of free cyanide and metals recovery as saleable concentrates are specially developed due to adverse impact of water recycling on gold recovery processes due to high concentration of base metals (copper). These technologies are also profitable. In order to detoxify cyanide in the tails for tailings dam, effective and inexpensive technologies involving a seasonal use of detoxified reagents were developed. For example, a technology with aldehydes use which is applied by a series of operations. Effluents disposed to the environment are detoxified using chlorination followed by almost a complete destruction of toxic cyanides and thiocyanates. Before disposal, chlorinated water is settled to precipitate the resulting hydroxides of metals and complete chemical reactions such as a full decomposition of hypochlorite ions. In order to protect ground water, watertight screens from local water-resistant materials are used. The samples of these materials were previously tested and chosen according to their maximum ability to adsorb toxic compounds in the tailings pond. If local water-resistant materials are not available, whole welded impermeable polymer screens are used. The options mentioned allow the storage of cyanidation tails in accordance with national ecological standards. Investigations over the application of hybrid comminution circuits with the High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), on the main comminution stage on the basis of the lime and cement industry, were presented in the paper. Two crushing circuits were investigated, the first HPGR-based and the other one, with conventional jaw crusher. The results presented in the article confirm that hybrid comminution circuits with the application of HPGR are innovative ones, and they assure achieving the technological and economic competitiveness in the mineral raw materials processing industry. They are much more favorable in terms of the final product fineness and capacity but insignificantly less effective about the unit energy consumption. Technological performance of conventional crushing circuit and HPGR-based one were also compared in lab scale. The circuit with HPGR application gives finer products both on crushing and grinding stages. The average particle size reduction obtained in HPGR-based circuit is as much as twice greater, comparing to the conventional crushing devices. Keywords: comminution, HPGR technology

We present a novel on line inductive sensor for the determination of the quality of the concentrates of iron ores. This device is coupled with a cheap USB Data Acquisition System that makes it versatile enough to simultaneously control up to seven fluxes at a very low cost (< $300 US dollars), and achieves a resolution better than 0.5 % on the determination of the magnetic iron content in the concentrate. A RLC circuit with its inductive element placed surrounding a sample of pure magnetite concentrate is tuned at its resonance frequency, by means of adjusting, the feeding voltage of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and several samples with mixtures of different contents of silica and magnetite are placed in order to get a calibration curve. After some signal conditioning, a National Instruments USB-DAQ NI-6008, acquires the amplitude of the signal via USB port on a PC using a Lab-View program designed for such purpose, in which the calibration curve is used for on-screen data presentation directly in percent of magnetite content. The implementation of this device for control purposes on line directly placed on the concentrators would allow better efficiency of the process and higher quality of the final concentrate by con-trolling; the rotation speed, the rising or dilution water fluxes or bypasses towards milling recirculation cycles.

Throughout Chile?s history, mining has consistently been a leading industry in the country. The 1990s marked the beginning of a boom in Chile?s mining industry, especially in copper mining, due to both foreign and local direct investment in the sector. Mining?s contribution to the GDP was 15.6% at current prices in 2009, and it accounts for 56% of the country?s exports. Chile?s copper market share reached 35% in 2009. The investment portfolio in mining in Chile for the coming decade has been estimated at 90 billion US dollars. The acute scarcity of human resources currently experienced by the mining sector in Chile will be accentuated in the coming decade as a result of this scenario of investments. The situation is, additionally, similar to the one confronted by other countries involved in the mining industry such as Australia, South Africa, Canada, and in Latin America includes, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. A study carried out by Fundacion Chile, ¨Labor Force in the Chile Mining Industry, Diagnostic and Recommendations, 2011-2020? shows the projected labor shortage for the operation of projects in the development stage, considering only the requirements of the process of extraction, processing, and maintenance. The demand, accumulated incrementally, will be around 115,000 technically skilled workers, professionals, and qualified workers. This figure refers to the operational work force, and does not include the human resources that will be required for the prior stage of the engineering and construction of the projects (brownfield and greenfield). The demand for technically skilled workers and professions for the stages of engineering and construction of the projects that have already received investments is estimated to be 190,000 people for the period 2012-2020. The peak of the demand for engineering is 2012, with a figure that surpasses the 12,000 professionals for all of the engineering specialties. The analysis of the formation of human resources at the tertiary level (where tertiary includes technical/vocational and academic degrees at the undergraduate level) for mining and related majors demonstrates that the programs are scarce with a bias toward theoretical contents and that they are excessively long (40% longer than comparable programs in Australia, Canada, and in OECD countries). The completion rates are low, especially in the technical-vocational programs, which have a completion rate of only around 30%. Finally, the rates of attraction of technically skilled labor and professionals towards careers in mining are insufficient to reduce the identified skill gaps. In the case of university professionals such as geologists, mining engineers and engineers in metallurgy, 80-90% will work in mining. In the case of graduates of relevant majors, that cover skills also utilized by other industries, not only mining?such as maintenance workers, operators of fixed and mobile equipment, etc.?the mining sector appears to be unattractive for reasons such as shift schedules, geographical location of work sites, and other factors. On the basis of the available diagnosis a strategy for the sector has been developed (Workforce Development and Skills Strategy) whose objective is (i) to define a Mining Qualifications Framework to identify the critical roles to be filled (ii) to start, with public resources, a ¨fast-track? training program to assure the availability of at least 28,000 operators (machinery operators, truck drivers, etc.) and maintenance specialists in 2015 (iii) to promote the development of training hubs for mining with learning technologies to train technical labor and professionals on the basis of world class standards (iv) to design and implement a campaign oriented toward the perception of mining as an attractive field of employment opportunity (v) to develop curricular innovations for tertiary education programs, on the basis of international benchmarks. "The business importance of water for mining companies is unequivocal as it may affect several aspects of mining projects ranging from the life-and-death license to operate to the imperative economic viability. It is thus no wonder that nearly all mining companies acknowledge water-related risks, issues and opportunities in their respective sustainability report. Somehow, this procedure has fostered the idea that water frugality could be the sustainable solution to several water-related issues. The regular exercise of water accounting should then follow as a key strategic requirement. Water accounting is defined as the application of a consistent and structured approach to identifying, measuring, recording and reporting information about water. However, several factors discussed herein have led to the fact that some water accounts are still produced using means (hardware and software) which undermatch the value actually associated with water. The resulting fuzziness about water usage could result in missed opportunities, suboptimal operations or even lead to environmental law violations. This paper subscribes to the distinctive perspective that, once underlying concepts and practical definitions have been standardized under a supported framework, such as the openly available Water Accounting Framework (WAF) published by the Minerals Council of Australia, most of the remaining water accounting issues may be boiled down to accuracy issues and, ultimately, to how much accuracy is valued by the stakeholders. Using the latest WAF document as a baseline for best practices of water accounting and, borrowing concepts from the fields of sensor network design in the process industries and best practices of metal accounting, this paper reviews some essential accuracy issues to be considered when designing or analyzing water accounting systems in mineral processing. The current paper also includes some elements for a promising attempt to include the value of information paradigm inside the water accounting best practices."

"Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially dissimilar from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. This dissimilarity is the reason for the substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Bradley et al. (1983) developed a math model regarding the mill charge as a lump. This model is presented in a simple equation with which motion of the mill charge can be predicted in terms of the parameters describing the specification and the operation of the centrifugal mill. This equation can be used to explain the power draft of the mill as well as the stability of mill operation. More recently, on the other hand, a numerical simulation technology called discrete element method (DEM) has become a vital vehicle for estimating the motion of the grinding media in the mill. The authors developed a mill simulator called ‘Mill Solver’. Mill Solver is designed to simulate various types of mills including centrifugal and vibration mills. The principle of this simulator is to calculate individual kinetic events of interaction of balls in the mill in a minute time interval, hence the mill performance can be constructed for estimation."

The application of centrifugal separation methods with the use of gravity concentrators has been assigned high priority while gold-containing minerals processing. The separation proceeds under centrifugal force resulted from the rotor spinning and wash water flow in the concentrators. The high specific gravity particles are retained at the trapping surface of the cone, and the low specific gravity particles are brought in the tailings. The centrifugal field in such concentrators (Knelson, Falcon) is generated by the rotating cone provoking the swirling of the free fed slurry flow. The author investigated the regularities of the separation process in the centrifugal gravity concentrator where a two-phase flow of the separated mineral media is under the pulsed pressure of the fluidization water and air. As a result of the study the possibility of the deeper penetration of the fine heavy fraction into the cone rings, providing the fluctuation of the fluidization water or air flow, was theoretically argued and experimentally proved. This allows the increase of the separation performance at low pulsation costs. The developed mathematical models are in close conformity with the actual process of interest and they enable the prediction of the heavy phase behavior at the isolated process stages in the concentrator. Based on the flotation features of coarse particle mineral, a new type of impeller & stator unit is developed. Particles suspension state generated by this impeller & stator unit under different speeds are tested in laboratory, and critical impeller speed suit for coarse particles flotation is presented. Comparing particle suspension parameters of the new impeller & stator unit with that of KYF impeller and stator unit, it comes up that the distance between the interface of two slurry circulation channels and the cell bottom is larger in the flotation cell with new impeller & stator unit. The test results indicate that the new type of impeller & stator unit is suitable for processing coarse particles due to its good suspension capacity for coarse particles. "Impact crushers are widely used in different industries to crush materials which can vary from soft to hard and from ductile to brittle. However, the sizing of impact crushers is still based rather on empirical than on scientific approaches. Therefore, a test rotor was developed in order to investigate the principles of comminution by impact. Rocks of diabase with different diameters were used to gain the crushing properties with the following results:RESISTANCE AGAINST CRUSHINGLikelihood of BreakageThe likelihood of breakage is a function of the impact velocity and the particle diameter. The likelihood increases with higher velocities and larger diameters. Maximum Crushing ForceThe crushing force is related to the area of projection of the rock. The smaller the particles and the higher the velocities the larger are the maximum related contact forces.Contact TimeThe contact time increases with the rock diameter whereas the influence of the impact velocity is neglectable.Mass Specific Crushing WorkThe mass specific crushing work decreases with the particle diameter and increases with the impact velocity."

"Particle scale simulation of industrial particle flows using DEM (Discrete Element Method) offers the opportunity for better understanding the flow dynamics leading to improvements in equipment design and operation that can potentially lead to large increases in efficiency, throughput or product quality. DEM has been used for modelling many industrial applications, particularly milling. This includes ball and rock motions and power consumption in ball mills, AG and SAG mills, vibrational segregation, flows in rotating drums, operation of dragline excavators and hopper flows. In mineral processing, DEM has been concentrated on mills because of their critical importance. However DEM also offers the opportunity to improve many other parts of mineral processing operations. These areas often do not receive the attention that the key comminution equipment commands, but can become critical when they fail or under-perform. Importantly their assessment/improvement using DEM is often much more feasible because of smaller problem sizes and the absence of poorly understood physics such as breakage. In this paper we describe DEM simulations of four important pieces of non-comminution equipment that are commonly found in or near mineral processing plants (these are shown in Figure 1):"

"Over the last 5 years, an ambitious project has been undertaken at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) aiming to isolate, study and, if possible, model the effect of particle size, liberation and collector adsorption density on the floatability of mineral particles. As part of this project, we have conducted highly controlled flotation test-work, combined with state-of-the-art solution and surface analytical techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and detailed mineralogical analysis to fully characterize the flotation behavior of a natural ore.The flotation tests were undertaken using a high-grade lead-zinc ore from BHP-Billiton's Cannington mine (Australia) in a specially designed continuously operated laboratory scale flotation rig. Solution and adsorbed collector concentrations were measured independently during the course of the flotation tests using HPLC based ex-situ techniques. Liberation studies were performed using the JKMRC Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) on selected size intervals of different streams to estimate the specific surface area of galena. These results were used to calculate the collector adsorption density (collector coverage) on galena particles, with the eventual aim of developing a mathematical model describing the relationship between pulp chemistry, feed mineralogy, and floatability of galena particles."
