Eudialyte is one of perspective resources of zirconium and other rare earth elements (REEs). Large reserves of eudialyte concentrated in the Murmansk region of the Russian Federation. Usually, technologies of REE treatment include the decomposition of eudialyte concentrate in different acidic, extraction and utilization of all components. The main problems in the leaching of eudialyte include are: the formation of an unfiltered silicon-containing gel; low recovery of REE; difficulty extraction of metals from the productive solution; high aggressiveness of the reagents. One of the promising trends of intensification of the processing of hard-to-degrease rare metal raw materials is the use of energy methods for affecting mineral suspensions. These methods make it possible to increase the efficiency of break up fine-dispersed mineral complexes and extracting micro- and nanoparticles of a valuable component in subsequent deep processing. The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of energy impacts on the nitric acid leaching of eudialyte concentrate. Experimental studies were carried out in a developed laboratory facility that makes it possible to evaluate the effect of electrochemical, ultrasonic and combined effects on the leaching of zirconium and REE from eudialyte concentrate. The studies carried out on the samples of eudialyte concentrate with the size class of -0.315 + 0.063 mm showed that the use of electrochemical and acoustic effects increases the extraction of ZrO2 in the production solution in 1.6 - 2.5 times, REE in 1.3 - 2.2 times, respectively. An analysis of the microstructure and phase composition of the surface of the eudialyte concentrate showed that the intensification of the leaching process is due to surface cleaning from the silicon-containing gel, as well as the opening of capillary channels and microcracks, which accelerates mass-transfer processes. The results obtained open wide opportunities for creation of modern and effective technology of processing of eudialyte concentrate, producing high-quality zirconium products and REE.

"Energy is vital for economic growth and sustainable development. Greater efforts are being devoted to developing unconventional energy resources such as oil shale as an alternative promising source of oil or solid fuel supplement. The main object of this contribution is to determine the upgrade potential of El-Nakheil oil shale using froth flotation. Samples were prepared by comminution followed by sieving into different size fractions. The flotation behavior of the material and extent of cleaning was studied with respect to nonionic and ionic collectors of anionic and cationic types. It was found that the organic rich portions could not be rendered sufficiently hydrophobic by the used collectors and selectivity towards surfactant was very low."

In this paper High Pressure Grinding Rolls(HPGR) was utilized to pretreat CVRD southern specular hematite for enhancing the pelletization of the refractory hematite. The process parameters of HPGR, balling and firing were optimized, and the mechanism of HPGR was demonstrated by determining the surface activity by means of Blaine specific surface area tester, laser size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro calorimeter and pelletability index. It is shown that the pelletization of the refractory hematite was greatly improved. The drop strength of green balls increases from 3.4 times to 13.6 times from 0.5m height while the bentonite dosage decreases from 2.2% to 1.3%.The compressive strength of roasted pellets also reaches 2500N/pellet. The mechanism of the pretreatment of CVRD southern specular hematite concentrates by HPGR is revealed that the surface activity is improved by an increases in specific surface area and the amount of micron size fractions, and higher lattice deformation and defects due to the fractures occurring inside particles during static pressure comminution, resulting in more wetting enthalpy, higher pelletability index and good property of roasting.

"Due to complex mineral composition and fine ingrained nature concentration of iron ores deposited in Mikhailovskoye mine field requires application of wet magnetic separation to produce 65–66% Fetotal and 8.2–8.6 %SiO2, concentrate with 90–94% of material being –0.044micron grain size. Higher specific consumption of ROM, increase of production costs with concurrent reduction of output - those are inevitable side effects of desired concentrate grade improvement. Large-scale complex analysis and surveys have been carried out aimed at concentrate grade improvement with concurrent output increase. Classification of feed in hydraulic cyclones (hereinafter referred to as hydrocyclones) has been the bottleneck for improvement of processing throughput and concentrate output. Hydrocyclone classification efficiency is 50-60% and further improvement is practically impossible. Actual circulating load may achieve as much as 500-600% while the optimal rate is 200-250%. Application of wet fine screening has been considered to improve iron ore concentrate grade. Objective of this work is to design processing flow diagram for unoxidized ferruginous quartzites with implementation of wet fine screening. Large-scale tests have been run in Crushing and Concentrating Plant with application of wet fine screening stage. These tests included application of wet fine screening in 2 and 3 stages of classification to separate desired grain sized material; replacement of hydrocyclone classification with fine screening; application of fine screening as additional stages to concentration process and screening of final concentrate. Testing Methods. EXPERIMENTS AS WELL AS THEORETICAL RESEARCH HAVE BEEN APPLIED FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS WORK; INCLUDING MAGNETIC, GRAIN-SIZE AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS. MODERN ANALYTICAL DATABASE HAS BEEN APPLIED TO STUDY WET FINE SCREENING FEATURES, MINERAL AND PHYSICAL COMPOSITION OF CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS. Work Results: - analysis of wet fine screening application for iron ore concentration. - technological solutions enabling to improve slurry classification of fine ingrained low magnetic iron ore have been developed. - effective process flow diagram including fine screening has been designed based on the feasible and reasonable arrangement solutions."

"The aim of this work is to seek the inhibitors of the meteoric and bacterial dissolution of sulphides and gangue minerals to stop the undesirable chemical reactions during conservation of the flotation wastes. The approach of passivation of surfaces by chemical treatment of the solid phase is applied for this objective.The samples taken from different depths of an old French waste dump revealed the capacity of the flotation tailings to produce acid waters (pH 1.8-2.4) and to release heavy metals. Mineralogical studies show not only the product of sulphide oxidation, i.e. sulphates, but also the complex transformations of aluminosilicates in acidic liquid phase. The detection by XRD of aluminium hydroxides (gibbsite, boehmite) allows supposing the recrystallisation phenomena during tailings conservation.Comparative tests of the passivation of the surface of sulphide minerals and waste of flotation with using of conventional reagents (CaO, NaOH, phosphates) and original reagents for this purpose (alkyl dithiocarbamates) allow to identify the optimal treatment conditions and the efficient chemicals.Leach tests were carried out in percolation columns during 68 weeks. The normalised leaching tests according to French legislation were run to confirm the selected treatment conditions. The results obtained show that a single treatment with carbamate inhibits the oxidation of the pyrite and the other sulphides, and totally prevents the formation of acid waters (the stabilised pH was 5.3-5.8). Treatment of in situ drainage water allows to obtaining a total precipitation of heavy metals: the residual concentrations of Fe, Cu and Zn are lower than 0,1 mg/l.The passivation of sulphides is the result of the formation with carbamate (studied by IR spectroscopy and XPS) of organometallic compounds, which are stable in acid medium. The presence of thiuramdisulphide (product of alkylcarbamate oxidation) at the mineral surface stabilises the mixed adsorption layer and leads to a considerable reduction in the hydratation rate of surface by avoiding the corrosion of the pyrite. No aluminium was detected in leach solution with this treatment."

This paper, by studying the surface properties of pure dolomite minerals separated from representative marine sedimentary rare earth-bearing phosphate ores in Zhijin, Guizhou, aims to study the effect of different anions on the ? potential of dolomite. The research findings showed that the dolomite mineral had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 6.5, and the PZC shifted towards lower pH values with addition of anion SiO32- and PO43-. Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

Bentonite is an excellent sealant mineral material because of its desirable swelling and self-healing characteristics, low permeability, sorptive qualities, and longevity in nature. A new type of water-swelling building sealant made from bentonite was studied in this paper. The building sealant is prepared by Na-base bentonite, vaseline and paraffin wax under different mass fraction of bentonite (which is 60%,65%,70% respectively). Under unrestricted state, some properties of samples were investigated. The volume expansion ratio at 24 h is 211%, 222%, 256% , and permeability coefficient is 2.86×10-8 cm/s, 4.15×10-8 cm/s and 4.78×10-8 cm/s respectively; low temperature flexibility of the sample (bentonite quality is 65%, 70% respectively) is good, and it does not flow heated for 2 h under 80?. The results of XRD and SEM indicate that bentonite is coated preferably by vaseline, and the spacing of layers of bentonite do not changed. The sample can keep full water swelling ability, and has good molding process. The test results prove that the properties of samples may reach the standard of building sealant.

In a small-scale mining in Brazil?s northeast, scheelite were exploited since 1940?s using a traditional gravity concentration flowchart (composed by jigs and shacking tables) that operates with low efficient for fine particles. Tailing of this plant was submitted to chemical, mineralogical and size characterization. Results pointed 50% smaller than 74µm with a grade of 0.11% WO3. The particle?s size is an important operational variable to heighten recuperation by shacking tables. Tests using Falcon SB40 centrifuge concentrators and shacking table were realized, optimizing their operational variables. Based on the tests results a new flowchart was proposed for concentrating and tailings recovery.

Mineral ilmenite is a major resource for titanium, whose major application is for production of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) for pigment application. The production of pigment grade TiO2 from ilmenite was earlier carried out by acid leaching, which has now been banned due to environmental regulations. Further acid leaching leads to loss of iron metal values as sulphate or chloride which are also treated as effluent. In thermal plasma processing the metal values are recovered as high value pig iron and Titanium dioxide is recovered as Titania rich slag containing 80 to 85 percent TiO2. The Titania rich slag has now been considered as a better input material than synthetic rutile for production of pigment grade Titanium dioxide. On the other hand, high value pig iron goes for automobile industry for specific application. An Inflight-flight Thermal Plasma Processing plant, used for the production of Titania Rich slag and high value Pig iron from ilmenite, with 20kg capacity was designed and fabricated. The reactor has the provision to utilize the flue gas generated for preheating the input of raw materials. Various aspects of designing the furnace operation include viz. Feeding the raw material at a fixed rate, designing the crucible used for melting ilmenite, proper cooling arrangements, an innovative method for tapping the melt, recovery of heat from the gases, various safety arrangements which are some of the important milestone of the present work. The various operations have been carried out through a controller panel. Experiments were carried out to optimize various processing parameters using statistical modeling. Large scale experiments have been carried out at 10 to15 kg scale. The material balance has been calculate, and it has been observed, that about 95 percent recovery could be obtained for both Iron and Titanium oxide from ilmenite. The detailed characterization on Titania rich slag and iron has been carried out. It has also been shown that using the above slag, it is possible to prepare nanosized Titanium dioxide powder containing about 98 percent Titanium dioxide by optimizing leaching conditions. The heap leaching of oxide copper ores with copper cathode recovery by solvent extraction and electrowinning is now well established as a low-cost method of copper recovery. The main purpose of this study was to extract copper from the copper low-grade oxide ore of Chodarchaei mine using column leaching. The copper oxide ore contained 1.1% Cu and 1.75% Fe. The mineralogical analysis indicated the malachite (Cu2(OH)2CO3) was mainly composed of oxidized phases. The sulfuric acid leaching experiments were performed under the laboratory conditions. The influence of several parameters on the course of the reaction such as particle size, acid concentration, flow rate, and time was examined. The optimum collective extraction of copper and iron was obtained at a particle size of +10-15 mm for a leaching duration of 3 days with sulfuric acid concentration of 100 gpl and using a flow rate of 2.5 cc/min. Under these conditions, the recovery of copper and iron were 98.54% and 41.99%, respectively. Keywords: column leaching, copper, iron, working diagram.

The mechanism of cobalt removal from zinc sulfate solution with zinc dust is still not understood well. The experiments in this paper were carried out by zinc dust from zinc sulfate solution with high cobalt to study the mechanism of cobalt removal. Residues after the cementation process from zinc sulfate solution were analyzed by SEM and Electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) to investigate the morphology of products. Different temperature will cause different structure of particles. With the increasement of temperature, cobalt removal can be improved considerably. The mechanism of cobalt removal by zinc dust is thought as follows: firstly, the cobalt ion forms Co-Zn alloy with zinc particles, and the reaction reaches equilibrium quickly; secondly, the Co-Zn alloy continues reacting to Co with Co2+, which is the control procedure of the whole reaction.

Red mud is the major waste material produced during digestion of bauxite ores with caustic soda in alumina production following the Bayer?s process. Its disposal remains a worldwide issue in terms of environmental concerns. A lot of research and developmental activities are going on throughout the world to find effective utilization of red mud, which involves various product developments. At present, building materials, industries are fast growing industrial sector where the need of various raw materials is enormous. The use of red mud in building material production is one of the options for conservation of natural resources and reduction of environmental pollution. A cost-effective and energy efficient mineral cementation process has been developed at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar for use of red mud in manufacture of building brick, block and aggregate. The red mud is an alkaline material, which contains both leachable and non-leachable soda along with different mineral constituents of alumina, iron and silica. The effort has been made to use the mineral constituents of red mud to develop cold setting building brick by mineral cementation process using a binder specially prepared from Portland Slag Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Alkali metal sulfates. The red mud has been used from 40 to 70% by weight along with fly ash and binder in development of cold setting building brick conforming to the specification of IS:12894:2002.

Electrowinning of lead from aqueous solution of PbCl2 and electrowinning of manganese dioxide from aqueous solution of MnCl2 are two research focuses in hydrometallurgy. This paper investigated a new process of simultaneous electrowinning of lead and manganese dioxide in chloride medium. The simultaneous electrowinning process in chloride solution not only can prevent chloride from liberating at anodes but also obtain two electrolysis products and decrease electric energy consumption. Diaphragm cell is used in the simultaneous electrowinning process to form separate anode and cathode compartment. The effects of temperature, HCl concentration in anolyte, NaCl concentration in catholyte and electrolysis time on current efficiency and cell voltage are studied. The results indicate that current efficiency of anode and cathode for 5 hours is 99% and 96% respectively, average cell voltage is 1. 701V, the weight ratio of lead and manganese dioxide produced at electrodes is 2. 39:1 under the optimum conditions. As anode products, manganese dioxide is ??MnO2, content of which in the products is more than 92%.

Among the different valences of vanadium, V (?) is insoluble in acid, V (?) and V (?) is in-soluble in water but soluble in acid. Vanadium mainly exists as V (?) in vanadium titanium-rich material obtained by reduction -milling-separation from vanadiferous titanomagnetite. Therefore, the vanadium titanium-rich material can not be used to extract vanadium by acid directly. In this paper, the vanadium leaching was studied by oxidation roasting and acid leaching. Through oxidation roasting, vanadium is transformed from the insoluble V (?) into V (?) or V (?) in order to improve the leaching of vanadium. The results show that vanadium leaching increases significantly by oxidation roasting-acid leaching. Leaching of vanadium is up to 70.18% under the optimized conditions of roasting temperature of 950 ?, roasting time of 40 min, sulfuric acid concentration of 40%, leaching time of 4h, leaching temperature of 95 ? and liquid to solid ratio of 4 : 1.

Grinding is one of the most important and expensive steps in mineral processing allocating about 70% of the total energy in the plants. Nowadays, for optimizing the energy consumption in these equipments, the rock behavior and its size distribution during the crushing have been normally predicted using selection and breakage functions to be able to optimally model and design grinding circuits. For this purpose, the case of Miduk copper mine in Kerman province, Iran was studied. The samples were taken from primary ball mills feed and were subject to screen analysis to achieve uniform sizes. Then, selection and breakage functions were determined at the different grinding times in laboratorial ball mill. Finally, ore size distribution in different grinding times was estimated using MATLAB software

In view of the bad effect that Na-bentonite direct adsorb Pb2+-containing wastewater, this article has carried out two kinds modification treatment on Na-bentonite: the direct microwave radiation modification and microwave radiation organic modification by adding quaternary ammonium salt?cetyltrimethylammonium bromide,and analysis the main influencing factors of the modification effect. In static conditions, preparing Pb2+-containing wastewater as the research object, it has respectively studied the effects of Na-bentonite, microwave soil of direct microwave modification and microwave soil of organic modification on the process of adsorption Pb2+, and discusses the effects of pH value, temperature, adsorbent dosage, stirring time on the adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater by modified bentonite, at the same time it does a verification test to the practical Pb2+-containing wastewater. Comparison the effects of adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater, the results show that organic modified microwave bentonite is obviously better than direct microwave modified bentonite and Na-bentonite, and can make 6 mg/L Pb2+-containing wastewater meet the national discharge standards. Through scanning electron microscope, the result of test is that organic modified microwave bentonite is the cause of improving adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater. Preparing modified bentonite by microwave heating will not only shorten the response time, reduce energy consumption and work-load, but also modified effect is good.

The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value.
