Soil and vegetation development were studied on abandoned mine sites near Velva in Ward County, North Dakota. The sites studied were 1, 7, 17, 30 and 45 years old since abandonment; unmined sites were also studied to provide measures of comparison. Species diversity was the highest at unmined sites (114) and lowest at the I year old site (26); sites 7, 17,30 and 45 years old had 37, 52, 43 and 68 species, respectively. Stand ordination revealed that site ages were the most important in influencing species diversity and composition. Stand-environ-mental complex ordinations encompassing 53 variables showed topographic variables to be the most important followed by site ages. Rates of nutrient accumulations were as follows: organic carbon 13.1 g m-2 yr-1; nitrogen 2.5 g m-2 yr-1; phosphorus 0.01 g m-2 yr-1; potassium 0.49 g m-2 yr-1. Carbon-nitrogen ratios showed the widest range for 1 year old sites (5-40) but 70 percent of the 45 year old sites showed values below 15 which were com-parable to the unmined mixed grass prairie sites. Species distributional diagrams are provided to show their habitat preferences which may be helpful in formulating species prescriptions for revegetation.

A prototype EM Location System was fabricated and tested at the Geneva Mine near Dragerton, Utah. This system consisted of six manpack transmitters and six manpack receivers covering the frequency band from 900 Hz to 2900 Hz as well as a six channel receiver designed for use, in a helicopter. Tests showed that EM signals from lightweight (3/4 lb) transmitters could be detected both on the surface and from a helicopter through as much as 4450 ft of relatively high conductivity (2 X 10- 2 mhos/m) overburden. Furthermore, the resulting field strength profiles could be used to determine source location to within 150 ft of the actual surveyed location in the mine. Modifications were made to a Monitoring, Locating and Communications System being tested at the Bruceton Mine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These modifications have improved the performance and quality of the paging and voice telephony mode of the system. Subsurface receiver modifications have improved reception of voice downlink signals.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of a unique new mining machine using cutting bits that take a constant-depth linear cut in the coal face. The studies show that this innovative new cutting concept, being developed by the Bureau of Mines, can be designed into the basic continuous mining machine. The resulting miner would be attractive to mine owners because coal could be mined with minimum generation of airborne respirable dust, substantial increases in productivity, and elimination of methane ignition due to cutting.

Workers at the Consolidated Aluminum Corp. primary aluminum smelter at Lake Charles, LA walked out at midnight March 31 when their contract expired. Management personnel operated the smelter and prebaked carbon anode facilities until an agreement for a new 3-year contract was reached April 18. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) began operations at its can recycling facility at Taylor, MS. The facility can process 3 million pounds per month of aluminum and steel cans. Alcoa announced plans to increase the capacity of its aluminum paste and flake production plant at Logan's Ferry, PA by 50 percent. Completion was scheduled for mid-1980.

As a rule, the usual zinc retort smelter fired with natural gas made its own burners, of which there might be 300 per block, out of standard pipe fit-tings. The gas was discharged through a feeder pipe at various distances into a cylindrical horizontal "blow hole" through a pillar block and thence into the furnace; the best location of this gas-feeder pipe was at the horizontal central axis of the blow hole; the side entry into the blow hole usually was used. The air entered the same blow hole behind the gas, through a short nipple, in the inner end of which was a constructing orifice in a clay plug; in this ,work cone-shaped funnels of various lengths also were used. Even with the air and gas correctly proportioned to each burner, small differences in their dimensions were found to influence greatly the temperatures reached, their uniformity, and consequently the percentage of zinc extracted. This fourth paper of a series on cooperative work in the zinc retort plants of the Eagle-Picher Mining & Smelting Company discloses the methods and principles followed in approximating closely the optimum dimensions for various burners, with examples from experimental and commercial furnaces showing the interrelation of such dimensions with combustion and temperatures in the furnace.

This paper gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Humboldt County, Nev., made during the month of June, 19373/. During the field work, virtually all the mining districts in the county were visited and many data were obtained on a number of active and inactive properties. No attempt has boon made to include in this report all the properties in the various mining districts, and it should be emphasized that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no being on its merit. The report covers the location of the various mining; districts, types of deposit, information on past operations and current activity, and general information likely to be useful to operators, investors, and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only briefly. The names of the various mining districts mentioned in this report are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. As organized, the districts embraced largo areas with no definite boundaries, and the names have little significance.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at W U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminars on New Technology for Longwall Ground Control. These seminars were conducted in Washington, PA, on April 12, 1994, and Denver, CO, on May 10, 1994. The papers herein describe several new, highly practical USBM technologies now available for ground control in longwall mines, including lie Coal Mice Roof Rating (CMRR), cable bolts, the MULSIM/NL model, and the Wood Crib Performance Model. Other significant topics addressed include longwall panel layout, coal pillar design, horizontal stress in longwall mines, roof support selection for gate entries, and ground control monitoring.

This report summarizes the work performed and results achieved on the above contract from October 18, 1971 through July 14, 1972 under Phase II, Task 1: Detailed Design of Prototype and Task 3: Supporting Experimental Investigation. Operation and Service Manuals resulting from Task 3 are submitted under separate cover as are detailed design drawings and specifications, prepared under Task 1. Both items accompany this report. This report also includes (A) an estimate of the cost of construction, (B) a description covering the use of the equipment, and (C) a proposed test plan to demonstrate performance of the equipment in both the laboratory and a mine.

The Bureau of Mines, in its effort to promote greater utilization of domestically abundant materials, conducted reasearch on an alternate mold material that has commercial potential for titanium investment casting. Using variations of the conventional lost wax molding process, investment shell molds were formed entirely of fused, calcia-stabilized Zr02 and a Zr02-forming binder. Optimization of binder/slurry properties', stucco grain size and dis¬tribution, and curing practices resulted in a structurally sound investment shell that was distortion free and thermally stable. Small titanium castings, weighing up to 10 pounds, were prepared in unheated molds by both static and centrifugal casting techniques. Microstruc¬tural examination of the castings revealed that mold fill and surface quality were enhanced by centrifugal casting, although good results also were obtained from the statically poured molds. Microstructural and electron microprobe examinations showed that excessive, brittle case formation could be avoided by curing the dried shell molds in air for at least 2 hours at 1,400° C. Increasing curing temperature and time above these levels yielded added bene¬fits. Molds fired in vacuum at 1,500° C for 4 hours yielded castings essen¬tially free of case formation. The tensile properties of as-cast test specimens (no surface conditioning performed) id the chemical composition of representative metal samples showed that castings produced were comparable to Grades C-1 and C-2 unalloyed titanium This indicated that no sifnificant degradation of metal properties resulted from mold/metal interaction.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1975.12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 67% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 37% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 21%, Northern States 29%, and other Southern States 13%. Output of primary metal in 1975 was valued at $3.0 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1975, building accounted for about 21%; transportation 19%; electrical 14%; packaging 18%; and consumer durables, 9%.

[Methods s of preparing the manganese metal that has been used in chemical and metallurgical investigations have passed through a cycle. Most of the investigations made before the turn of the century, used Moissen's pyrophoric manganese.3/ This material was made by electrolysis into a mercury cathode and distillation in vacuo. This report describes an experimental program which we conducted on behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, to select from currently available materials two novel systems of construction for air-restraining bulkheads to be used in control of radon-polluted air in underground uranium mines. The program included both laboratory and field tests, the latter conducted in a portion of an operating mine owned and operated by Union Carbide Corporation at LaSal, Utah. The test site was a worked-out, double entry stope having a Volume of about 2000 cubic meters, and was located immediately adjacent to an exhaust airway. The bulkheads were constructed of 15 cm x 1.5 cm timber uprights, 5 cm x 15 cm horizontal members supporting a close-fitted 13 mm plywood curtain-wall., which was covered with a low-permeability membrane to seal in the radon-polluted air. The two membrane materials selected for testing were chosen from a list of twenty-two potentially acceptable candidates using criteria such as strength, flammability, ease of application, adhesion, radon permeability, and elasticity. Thirteen of the candidates were tested in our laboratories for adhesion to plywood and to both wet and dry concrete (simulating wet and dry mine rock surfaces), and for their general physical properties, including radon permeability. The final selections made by the Technical Project Officer, and based on our recommendation, were a pre-formed ethylene propylene diene monomeric rubber (EPDM) membrane 1.12 mm thick, normally used as a roof sealant in industrial construction, and available from Carlisle Tire and Rubber Co., Division of Carlisle Corp., Carlisle, PA, and Aquafas 48-00, a water-based mastic used in a wide variety of commercial applications and available from H. B. Fuller Co., Foster Products Division, Spring House, PA. The EPDM membrane was applied as a single sheet, laminated (dry) between two layers of plywood, and the Aquafas was applied both by troweling and spraying onto a plywood surface. In the field test, radon concentrations were continuously measured before, after, and in the trapped air behind each bulkhead. Temperature, pressure, and velocity of the air in the adjacent airway were also measured and recorded continuously. Radon fluxes at the rock/air interface and through the bulkheads themselves were measured manually on a frequent basis. All continuously acquired raw data were recorded automatically on two USBM Data Aquisition Systems (DAS), and the raw data were converted into engineering units and recorded on magnetic disks by a specially programmed microcomputer that was interfaced with the DAS's. Relatively clean (i.e. low radon concentration) air was pumped into a point near the face of one test bulkhead from a location 170 meters away through vent bag. Several air curtains and two air-restraining bulkheads were erected in passageways adjacent to the test area in an effort to control both velocity and radon concentration of the air flowing past the bulkhead faces. An average concentration of approximately 500 pCi/liter at a flow of 550 m3/minute was attained as the background concentration against which leakage through the bulkheads was measured. The entire field test period extended from October, 1981 to March, 1982, a total of six months, and was subdivided into seven successive time periods: 1) site preparation 2) background measurements prior to bulkhead construction 3) passive restraint, with bulkheads in place and totally sealed 4) open bleeder period of natural convection ventilation in and out of the bulkheaded area through a 10 cm (diameter) opening, with connecting tubing; leading into an Exhaust airway 5) open bleeder period, having forced exhaust through a 1.0 cm opening using a servo-controlled fan 6) charcoal trapping period, using the servo-controlled fan to exhaust air through the charcoal traps, to test the effectiveness of such traps in removal of radon from the exhausted air 7) site decommissioning Each of the two systems tested, one incorporating the pro-formed EPDM-rubber membrane and the other utilizing Aquafas 48-00, was assessed for effectiveness in controlling radon-polluted air by observing the change in the radon concentration in the ventilation air flowing continuously over the surface of each bulkhead. The sensitivity of the observed measurements was limited by the volume flow-rate of the ventilation air and the radon concentration in that air. The data would indicate that the observed increments in radon concentration in the ventilation air moving across bulkheads B-l and B-2 were essentially zero within the limits of sensitivity of the measurements. Data from radon flux measurement taken both on the sealed ribs adjacent to the bulkheads and on the bulkheads themselves did not differ significantly from blank data.

The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

Methane sensors using principle of catalytic oxidation of methane are employed for determination of methane content in ambient air of coal mines. Certain foreign gases or vapors in the air poison the catalyst of the sensor effecting the sensor's response. After literature search of poison compounds of Pt and Pd oxidation catalyst, experimental studies of catalyst poison kinetics were made for three siloxane compounds, tributyl-phosphate, monobromotrifluoromethane, and hydrogen sulfide, selected as poison vapors. Concentration range of the poison vapors was varied in a range from 3000 to 0.1 ppb (v/v). Three siloxane vapors produced strong catalyst poison effect, followed by tributylphosphate, hydrogen sulfide and monobromotrifluoromethane for the high concentration level of the poison vapors. The poison effects are influenced significantly by concentration of the vapors. Threshold poison vapor concentrations where effect of the poison vapors on the sensor is minimal were determined experimentally. Experimental studies were made further for prevention method of catalyst poison by adsorption techniques. Use of activated carbon cloth inserted on the sensor's head prevented catalyst poisoning efficiently.

The electromagnetic retransmission system is a new, automated method of locating trapped mine workers. This technique overcomes many 1 imitations inherent in electromagnetic direction finding by reducing the effects of the conducting ground to an acceptable maximum, by finding position accurately in the presence of antenna tilt, and by eliminating the need for the receiver to be located directly above the subsurface transmitter. Three transportable three-axis magnetic-dipole transmitters on the surface create a system of electronic grids in which the phases of the downlink Signals convey position information. The subsurface retransmitter modulates the uplink carrier of the existing beacon transmitter with the received downlink signal; the coal-pillar loop antenna is used for both receiving and transmitting. The uplink receiver uses a three-axis antenna and extensive digital signal processing. A small computer integrates data, estimates position, and controls system operation through VHF-FM communications. Both coal-mine and deep-mine operation are possible by selecting appropriate transmitting power and signal frequencies. This report shows such systems to be both feasible and practical.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to review the air and water monitoring requirements of five Federal environmental acts (the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and to compile information on the currently available monitoring instruments. A literature review of the acts and their associated regulations was conducted to determine applicability to the mining industry as well as any air and water monitoring requirements. In addition, an industry search and literature review was performed to assess the instrumentation available to comply with the monitoring regulations. Based on this research, the instruments are classified by general applicability to air, surface water, or ground water monitoring, then catalogued by monitoring parameters. A discussion is provided on recommended and innovative monitoring techniques.

To develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system, one should know what has been done, what is being done today and what is being planned for tomorrow. The bibliography referenced and discussed in this report provides a good source for that knowledge. To scientifically determine where attention should be focused to up-grade a system, the system must be quantized as far as possible. The Mechanization Profile of Appendix A-I is discussed in this report and has been used to analyze and determine the degree of mechanization currently in use and/or described in the literature for all three major elements of the long-wall system, namely, Winning, Roof Support and Haulage. The charted profiles make it self-evident where attention and design effort is needed to remove human operators from the face of the mine.

"This paper contains some new thermodynamic data for silicates in the series Mg2SiO4-Fe2siO4 and MgSiO3-FeSiO3 and gives the results of a thermodynamic attack on the problems of stability end parageneses.. Although some data are lacking satisfactory agreement with mineralogical and petrological observations is indicated.The use of thermodynamic methods in mineralogy and petrology has been rather limited, because accurate thermal data, especially for the more complicated and more important rock-forming minerals, have been too scanty to permit any systematic application to problems in those fields. It is, nevertheless, a fascinating task to investigate to what extent the mode of occurrence and the stability relations of the minerals and mineral parageneses, as revealed by petrological and mineralogical observations, agree with predictions of thermodynamics. At the present stage of development calorimetric data are needed for most of the abundant silicate minerals.Measurement of the heats of solution in hydrofluoric acid of minerals in the series Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4 and MgSiO3-FeSiO3 affords a ready means of obtaining their heats of formation from the oxides. Combination of such data with entropy and heat-capacity values gives a means of obtaining free energies of formation from the oxides, which, in turn, are connected di¬rectly with stability and paragenoses.The two silicates of magnesium, Mg2SiO4 and MgSi03, occur as rock-forming constituents as forsterite and clinoenstatite or enstatite. The orthosilicate (forsterite) forms a series of isomorphic mixtures with ferrous-orthosilicate (fayalite). The continuity of this series, suggested by petrological observations, has boon proved experimentally by Bowon and Shairer.4/ The present work shows that those minerals constitute a series of perfect solid solutions - that is, a series of solid solutions for which heats of formation from the individual pure silicates, Mg2Si04 and Fe2SiO4, aro negligibly small.The metasilicates of magnesium and iron also form an isomorphic series. However, this series differs from the forstorito-fayalite series in the fact that the most iron-rich mixtures, between about En10Fs90 and pure Fs, appear to be unstable with respect to the paragenesis iron-rich olivine plus quartz. The supposed instability of pure FeSiO3 as a crystalline compound, at least at high and at moderate temperatures, is remarkable, as no crystal struc¬tural reason for such instability is apparent. The present work indicates, also, that these minerals form a perfect series of solid solutions and throws additional light on the instability question.In the following, the samples used in this investigation will be described. For each of the natural olivines and orthopyroxenes, with the exception of sample L, a chemical analysis was made of the purified and actually used fraction. All the analytical work was carried cut by Oleg v. Knorring, and the specific gravity determinations, by moans of a pycnomctcr, by Oiva Joensuu, both of the University of Helsinki, Finland. The determinations of the optical properties were made by Mrs. Toini Mikkola, of the Geological Survey of Finland."
