"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Two Longyear No. 12 Junior Straitline diamond drills were used for the work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Among the recently patented detonating compounds that have been suggested as substitutes for the commonly used fulminate of mercury is the normal lead salt of trinitroresorcin, or styphnic acid. As no data concerning its use or practi¬cability were available, a study of its properties was made in the explosives laboratory at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, Pa. This paper embodies the results obtained.Normal lead trinitroresorcinate was first prepared and patented*** by Herz; it probably found some use during the World War, but no record of its performance is available,Preparation of Lead Trinitrpresorcinate.In his patent specifications, Herz states that the normal salt may be obtained in a quantitative way by precipitating a multiple of the equivalent weight of the lead salt of a strong inorganic acid - such as lead nitrate - in the presence of a weak organic acid - such as acetic acid - by heating with a Teak solution of the alkali-metal salts or alkaline-earth salts of trinitroresorcin. Herz gives the following example: 245 grams of dry trinitroresorcinand 290 grams of crystalline sodium carbonate are dissolved in in 18.8 liters of boiling water, to which 77 c.c. of glacial acetic acid is added. The toiling solution is mixed with a boiling solution of 650 grams of lead nitrate in 1.4 liters of water, stirring rapidly; and the mixture is boiled for two minutes, after which it is cooled quickly with constant stirring. The precipitated crystals are then filtered off, washed several times with cold water, and dried."

As part of the Bureau of Mines research program on recovering alumina from domestic resources, methods for extracting iron from aluminum sulfate solutions (obtained by leaching kaolinitic clay with dilute sulfuric ,acid) were investigated. In countercurrent extraction experiments at a l-gal/hr flow rate of aluminum sulfate leach liquor, the iron concentration 'was decreased from 1.4 g/l to 0.01 g/l after four stages of using a primary amine extractant. The iron-loaded amine solution was regenerated in five stages using 3[N] sulfuric acid or in four stages using 6[N] sulfuric acid. The aluminum sulfate solution obtained was suitable for the preparation of alumina meeting cell-grade standards of less than 0.01 pct iron.

Reduce worker exposure to respirable dust without interfering with bag-filling operations. Approach A dust control hood was developed which contains and captures dust close to its source and prevents it from entering the bag-filling operator's work place. How It Works A sheet metal hood is placed around the nozzle of the bag filling machine. The hood is connected through ducts to the plant exhaust ventilation system. Air pulled into the front of the hood and around the sides of the bag picks up dust generated inside the hood, and carries it to the dust collector. The size of the hood can be adapted to fit most fluidized valve-type bag-filling machines. The height of the hood depends on the bulk density of the product and weight of the bags being filled. The 14-inch-width of the hood allows it to be used on multi-nozzle baging machines spaced 16 inches on center. Only 2/3 of the bag is actually within the hood, and this allows easy operator access for placing the bags on the nozzle.

Develop a means for estimating vertical stress conditions in or around an underground mine so that appropriate measures for ground control can be taken before hazardous conditions arise. Background High vertical stress in an underground mine could cause or enhance hazardous ground control conditions which might lead to accidents, fatalities, and loss of reserves. An understanding of the vertical stress conditions at the mining level would allow a mine operator to take precautions that will minimize the occurrence of ground control problems. A knowledge of the underground stress conditions prior to mining could be used as an aid in future mine plan development to avoid or minimize ground control problems. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a computer program for calculating the vertical stress resulting from the pressure of overlying rock masses on a mine or geologic surface at various depths.

The Bureau of Mines developed two methods for determining iron II and iron III in 2- to 5-mg samples of coal using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometry. One method used solid coal samples; the other method used aqueous solutions. The method using solid samples was more simple, technically, but required the use of X-ray fluorescent analysis, or another independent method, for determining total iron in the samples, and the results were subject to some uncertainty. The method using aqueous solutions appeared capable of greater certainty and did not require additional methods of total iron analysis but was more involved procedurally. The coals analyzed were found to contain much more iron II than iron III.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on 138 waterflood projects in Wyoming. Injection was in 25 producing zones and 65 fields. Specific data presented include field location, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. The 138 projects studied will, if successful, recover about 800 million barrels of secondary oil. Almost all of the injection water is from deep water wells.

Flotation studies of phosphate-bearing waste pond materials, low-grade washer products, and raw ores, all from the Tennessee brown phosphate district, showed that these types of materials could be treated without des liming to recover high-grade phosphate concentrates. The investigation showed that fine grinding before flotation was a requisite for increased recovery of the phosphate values and that the optimum pH conditions were in the range of 10.0 to 10.5 when using anionic collectors. Multiple-cleaning of the rougher phosphate concentrate was required to produce high-grade concentrates. Phosphate recoveries ranged from 60 to 82 percent and were inversely related to the grade of concentrate produced.

Enormous quantities of limestone are used for metallurgical purposes. Approximately 23 million tons were so used in the United States in 1925 chiefly for smelting iron ores in the blast furnace. Smaller amounts are used in basic open-hearth steel manufacture, and in smelting lead, copper and antimony ores. Most limestone producers lave little knowledge of the way in which their stone is used in metallurgy. Maximum tolerances of silica, alumina, sulphur and possibly magnesium; and minimum content of calcium carbonate may be arbitrarily fixed for the guidance of the producer, but aside from these requirements little information is available to producers on the manner in which their stone is used, the office it performs in smelting, or the effects of impurities. More complete [wledge] of utilization would enable limestone operators to solve their production problems more intelligently.

This report describes the analysis tools developed at West Virginia University which can be implemented to optimally design coal mine electrical systems. The basic analytical tools for all power systems are the load-flow and short-circuit analysis. Well known programs have been developed for analysis of ac transmission and distribution systems, but they are not applicable to a system which has combined ac/dc distribution, such as a coal mine power system. Furthermore, the topology of a coal mine electrcal system changes continuously due to the movement of the locomotives on the track. In the first section of this report, algorithms for carrying out load flow and short-circuit analysis of a coal mine electrical system are described. Results from the study of a typical coal mine system are presented. In the second section a method is described to optimally size power cables for cyclic loads. The method is based on the development of a thermal-electric model for a low-voltage power cable. Results from experimental verification of the model are also presented. These techniques are useful in the safe, efficient, reliable and economical design of the coal mine electrical power systems.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study of current trends in methods employed by the coal industry to dispose of acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment sludge. Thirty-three AMD treatment plants, operated by 11 Pennsylvania coal companies, were randomly surveyed. These plants provided data for calculating sludge volumes, as well as information on sludge settling, transportation, and disposal. Onsite visits allowed observation of problems associated with the various methods of sludge disposal: (1) disposal into a deep mine, (2) permanent retention in ponds, (3) disposal at an active coal refuse area, and (4) onsite burial. Method 1 is the most frequently used and the most environmentally sound. It is apparent, based on this representative sampling of AMD treatment plants, that the magnitude of sludge production is such that an aggressive and directed effort in reduction of sludge volume is seriously needed. The areas of major concern are (1) the amount of surface land required for sludge storage and disposal, (2) reclamation of these disturbed surface areas, and (3) effective and efficient means of removing, transporting, and disposing of AMD sludge. In this report, an engineering approach to the practical problems associated with the existing disposal methods is presented, together with recommendations for future research.

This Bureau of Mines publication provides the enthalpy of formation of malachite [Cua(COs)(OH)2] as determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry. At 298.15 K the enthalpy of formation from the component oxides is -15.l0±0.30 kcal/mole and from the elements, -251.9±0.5 kcal/mole.

The Bureau of Mines has long been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts, the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions1 issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. The Government, with the exception of the Tennessee Valley Authority, purchased approximately 5.5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1971. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 4,366 samples. These are published (table 1) for the use of Government officials and the public. Such analyses of delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

A solvent extraction procedure using 8-hydroxyquinoline and chloroform was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a preconcentration technique for the determination of aluminum, calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, nickel, and zinc in large samples of high purity tungsten. X-ray spectrographic and atomic absorption methods were used to determine the trace metals after preconcentration. The presence of 10 grams of tungsten had a pronounced effect on the distribution of 8-hydroxyquinoline between the aqueous and chloroform phases. This change in the 8-hydroxyquinoline distribution in turn had an adverse effect on the extraction of the trace metals. Extraction efficiencies can also be adversely affected by an increase in the quantity of extractable metals present, as shown by radiotracer tests using 65Zn. Excess 8-hydroxyquinoline in the extracts did not interfere with the determination -of the serious interference in the combined ion exchange paper--X-ray spectrographic method. Although preconcentration by 8-hydroxyquinoline extraction was found to be partially successful, other preconcentrationn methods based on ion exchange and dithizone extraction were found to be superior.

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. This report investigates the mechanical behavior of fine soils in a lunar environment in engineering gravity-flow bins. The ultrahigh vacuum, absence of moisture, and a lunar gravity one-sixth that of earth gravity represents a unique environment, both advantageous and detrimental to these systems. On earth, moisture and gases contained in powder masses can be responsible for complex descriptions of gravity flow. Their absence appear to simplify the lunar soil behavior. However, simulation of the lunar gravity and vacuum complicates the development of experimental data for designing bins. The properties of a dry soil powder, its behavior under one-dimensional compression, and its torsional and direct shearing strength under earth atmosphere are described in part 1 of this paper. These properties provide the parameters for a finite-element analysis to optimize the design of bins, to be described by Dr. William Pariseau in part 2. Shear tests assess the failure criteria for the material. Compression tests provide modulus and (Ko) stress-ratio values from the loading portion of the compression cycle, duplicating the condition of a bin at rest with the discharge closed. During the unloading portion of the compression cycle (soil overconsolidated), the residual Ko values rise. It is postulated that this phenomenon creates a high-lateral stress in bins when they approach incipient flow. Assessment of the Ko value, overconsolidation ratio, and the void ratio state is proposed as a criterion to determine the flowability of powder.

In 1984, as part of a project to evaluate Alaskan occurrences of certain critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated a columbium-bearing regolith on upper Idaho Gulch, near Tofty, AK. The regolith is derived from weathering of a dolomitic marble and consists mostly of iron oxide minerals with accessory apatite, zircon, xenotime, rutile, monazite, and the columbium minerals aeschynite, columbite, and ilmenorutile. Two regolith lenses contain 340,000 lb of columbium resources at an average grade of 0.07 pct. Calculated composite concentrates from two regolith samples (approximately 200 lb each) contained 53 and 57 pct of the columbium at grades of 0.97 and 0.86 pct, respectively. In each case the grade could be improved to 1.1 pct Cb with a sacrifice of 9-pct recovery. The regolith's mineralogy, trace-element geochemistry, and similarity to descriptions of other columbium-enriched regoliths suggest that the underlying marble may be a carbonatite. The lack of associated alkalic igneous rocks and the stratiform nature of the regolith, however, may be interpreted as evidence for sedimentary origin of the marble. The marble and regolith are a lode source for some of the minerals in the Idaho Gulch placer deposit.

An evaluation is presented for an ammonium sulfate leaching process designed to extract manganese from Cuyuna, Minn., and Aroostook, Maine, deposits. In this process the manganese and iron in the ore are reduced to MnO and Fe 3 0 4 in a shaft furnace; the reduced ore is then leached with ammonium sulfate solution forming soluble manganous sulfate while leaving most of the iron undissolved. After filtration, the manganese and some impurities are precipitated from solution as carbonates which are then pelletized and calcined to form a product composed mainly of Mn3O4. The plants are designed to produce 100 tons per day of manganese contained in a product that is suitable for the production of ferromanganese. A byproduct credit, together with the extra processing cost, is included for the Cuyuna ore processing plants because Fe2O3 may be recovered for use in blast furnaces. The estimated operating costs per ton of manganese, excluding income taxes and return on investment, are: [ ] The process with or without byproduct recovery, when treating Cuyuna or Aroostook ores, is not economically competitive with ores available at $71.43 per ton of contained manganese.

A brief investigation was made to determine the feasibility of electro-refining beryllium in a KCI-LiCI-BeC12 bath. Thin, platelike crystals of beryllium metal were produced by electrolyzing technical-grade beryllium metal beads (about 94-percent purity) as the soluble anode. Operating cell conditions were: Temperatures of 450° to 600° C.; an inert atmosphere; bath compositions of (1) 38.1 mol. percent KC1, 54.8 mol. percent LiCl, and 7.1 mol. percent BeC12 and (2) 36.7 mol. percent KC1, 52.7 mol. percent LiCl, and 10.6 mol. percent BeC12; cell voltages of 0.30 to 0.80; and initial cathode current densities of 50 to 435 a./sq, ft. Current efficiencies ranging from 87 to 96 percent were obtained. Qualitative spectrographic analyses of the metal products indicated that impurities were reduced. This technique offers the possibility of producing a grade of beryllium purer than that now generally available, which may have better mechanical properties.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch-and small-scale continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from Georgia, to determine the feasibility of recovering usable feldspar and quartz products by flotation. Two flotation methods were utilized for the removal of biotite and other iron-bearing minerals: One was in an acid-cationic circuit, and the other in an alkaline-anionic-cationic circuit. Feldspar was recovered using an acid-cationic method. To produce commercial-grade feldspar and quartz products it was necessary to employ either two sequential froth flotation circuits or one froth flotation circuit supplemented by wet-magnetic separation techniques to remove iron contaminants. Continuous flotation processing yielded a commercial-grade feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.8 Na20, 5.4 K20, and 1.10 CaO, with recoveries of 77.8, 70.3, and 64.4, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality glass sand containing 98.2 percent SiO2 and 0.024 percent Fe2O3. About 42 percent of the quartz was recovered at glass sand specifications. An effective separation of, potash feldspar from the bulk feldspar concentrate was achieved by batch flotation in a mineral separation cell.
