An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

Mining companies employ a multitude of risk management tools. The effectiveness of these tools for decision-making and communicating risk has not been addressed. This paper investigates the use of verbal probabilistic expressions in communicating geomechanical risk. Analysing survey data obtained from a group of mining geomechanics professionals, it identifies limitations of common probabilistic expressions. The paper concludes by making specific recommendations to avoid the use of certain expressions that may result in increased uncertainty, thus compromising the use of risk management tools.

The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

"Mining in the Carletonville area of the Witwatersrand Basin predates 1934. Owing to the depletion of higher grade ore, the current activities focus increasingly on the extraction of lower grade secondary reefs as well as remnant extraction. Of particular interest is multi-reef remnant extraction. Numerical modelling was conducted to investigate some rock engineering aspects of remnants being understoped on a secondary reef horizon. An analysis of the stress evolution in the middling between two reef horizons indicated that a zone of high major and low minor principal stress develops between the two reefs. This indicates a high risk of violent shear failure. Some pillars were nevertheless successfully understoped in the past and a study was conducted to better understand this phenomenon. An ’extended’ energy release rate concept introduced by Napier and Malan (2014) proved to be useful for investigating this problem. It was found that bedding planes and lithology appears to play a role in the stable dissipation of energy in multi-reef remnant geometries. The study indicated that the stope convergence and the various energy components are affected by the presence, position, and properties of a bedding plane. The energy solutions are complex and sometimes counterintuitive. Care should be exercised when modelling specific cases. The modelling was nevertheless valuable as it indicated that energy dissipated on weak layers may reduce the risk of violent failure in a multi-reef mining scenario. Additional work is required to investigate if crushing on the reef plane plays a prominent role when mining these remnants. IntroductionTo extend the lives of the Witwatersrand gold mines, work is being conducted to include a larger number of remnants and pillars in the reserve base of the mines. According to Jager and Ryder (1999), a remnant is an unmined block of ground surrounded by extensive mining. Remnants are typically left because of adverse or difficult mining conditions caused by geological structures, poor ground conditions, low grade, or rockburst damage (Durrheim, 1997). In contrast, pillars are typically the result of rock engineering designs to control energy release rates (ERR) and seismicity. During the early 1900s, remnants formed by the practice of scattered mining layouts had a significant effect on seismicity. Numerous task teams were appointed during this period. As the industry expanded, the severity of rockbursting increased and the research was formalized after the 1960s. Various recommendations were made and many of these are still used as best practice today (e.g. Jager and Ryder, 1999)."

PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The 'possible operating range' of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation's Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Identifying the exact borders of geological domains and assessing the uncertainty of these borders are crucial steps in resource estimation. This potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model, structural data, borehole data, and the geologist’s interpretations. The resource evaluation of a copper ore deposit is often performed in three steps: (i) delimitation of the boundaries of the units corresponding to the various geological formations or ore types; (ii) estimating densities; and (iii) estimation of grades within each unit. In simple cases (e.g., a series of sub-horizontal layers), the geometric model can be built using 2D geostatistical techniques (kriging or co-kriging of the elevations or thicknesses of the various horizons) which also quantify the uncertainty of the model. A 3D model of Cu grade is generated using ordinary kriging; however, the indicator kriging method is run to design a 3D model of rock types by incorporating the drilling results. Block models of geophysical and geological characteristics are included in a similar 3D mesh to investigate their relationships in copper mineralisation.

Computer control of flotation at the Ecstall concentrator By M. P. AMSDEN, C. CHAPMAN, and M. G. READING Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1,1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1,4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

The factors affecting haul truck tyre performance and the effectiveness of the management system at Rossing Uranium Mine were investigated with the aim of increasing tyre performance in terms of running hours until failure. The main objectives were to identify the types of tyre failure, their causes and cost implications, and evaluate the effectiveness of the management system. A site severity survey, weight study, and TKPH studies were conducted to determine the pit conditions, and an analysis of failed tyres carried out. The results showed that tyre performance at the mine has declined from 2009 to date, and the increase in lost value amounted to R5.7 million in 2012 alone. The main cause of tyre failure is loose rocks in the pit. The present management system in the load and haul department is not effective enough due to operational constraints it is facing.

Kriging estimates of geological resources are sometimes conditionally biased because the kriging plan contains too few samples. This may be done purposely in order to match the variance of the estimates to the true block dispersion variance. This work aims at evaluating the influence of conditional bias over the ultimate optimum pit design in relation to its shape, size and NPV (Net Present Value of profits). It has been restricted to two real case studies: a ‘carrot shaped’ gold porphyry in northern Greece and a manto-typeexotic copper deposit located in northern Chile. The methodology applied to each deposit consisted of generating a ‘real block model’ and four resource estimates by the use of conditional simulation and the application of four different kriging plans to the drillhole databases respectively. The estimation models vary in smoothness and conditional bias. Ultimate optimum pits were determined for the ‘real’ and the four different kriging models. Pit comparisons lead to the following conclusions: •In the worst case, conditional bias overestimated the project's NPV by 32% and 5% for the gold and copper deposits respectively. •The overestimation of high grades is more relevant than the underestimation of low grades. This resulted in a tonnage over-extraction of 148% and 1% for the gold and copper deposit respectively. This difference was attributable to the vastly different geometry of the deposits. •The smoothing effect of kriging, without or very little conditional bias, produced open pits that were different to the ‘true’ (ideal) ones and furthermore, underestimated the project's NPV by 10% and 6% for the gold and the copper deposits respectively. •Other factors that influence the optimum open pit design and to some extent control the effect of conditional bias are: the cut-off grade, the orebody geometry and distribution of grades within it and the amount of over-burden. In the second of a series of five colloquia with the theme Rescue 91 ..Survival Initiatives for the Mining Industry, the emphasis was placed on the harnessing of improved technology for the benefit of all the industry. The Colloquium was held at Mintek, Randburg, and attracted some 150 delegates and speakers from a cross-section of the industry. Eight papers were presented, and panel discussions were held to round off the morning and afternoon sessions. The purpose of the Colloquium was to allow mines and other groups to put forward innovative schemes in the management of technology that could be shared by everyone in their determination to ensure the survival of the gold-mining industry in the current difficult times. "Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy.Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.1. IntroductionDiffraction of X-rays by matter has been used for more than 80 years, initially to elucidate the structure of crystalline matter, and to investigate the bonding between atoms. The first development of powder diffraction cameras and the later development of X-ray diffractometers saw the development of methods to identify phases and to try to quantify them in mixtures. A comprehensive database and search-match techniques have been developed over the ensuing years. Effective and accurate quantification had to wait for the so-called Rietveld' analysis where the total diffraction pattern is used and where the crystal structure data for the constituent phases are needed as input. Overlapping of diffraction peaks of different phases is handled without difficulty and reliable results can be obtained in spite of this occurrence.The development of methods for structure analysis from powder data has also progressed rapidly and more and more complex structures are being solved from first principles, i.e. without knowledge of unit cell or space group data. Because of the ease of use of the Rietveld method, it is finding increased application in metallurgy, especially in the quantification of phases of importance in minerals processing, in pyrometallurgical processes, and in materials characterization. This study will examine the principles of the Rietveld method, its application in metallurgy, and finally also the common pitfalls that need to be avoided.2. Rietve1d AnalysisAs the Rietveld method compares the experimental diffraction pattern with one calculated from known crystal structure data, the following data are needed:•,An XRD Pattern with as Iowa background as possible. This should have good resolution and high diffraction peak intensities. With modem X-ray detectors, this can be achieved in minutes rather than hours.•,Instrumental parameters such as goniometer radii and slit sizes are needed. These are the so-called ""Fundamental parameters"". They are used to calculate the shapes of the resultant diffraction peak profiles that are caused by the instrument. The parameters are used to correctly separate the instrumental effects on the diffraction pattern from the sample effects."

"The decreasing availability of resources amenable to surface operations has led to increasing numbers of underground mines, with trends indicating this will continue into the future. As a result, there is a need for additional optimization processes and techniques for underground mines, with many analogous methods having already been developed for surface mining. Current methods for design and optimization of stope boundary selection and scheduling mainly involve heuristic methods which focus on a single lever. Individual optimality may be approached, but globally optimal results can be obtained only by an integrated, rigorous approach. In this paper we review previous methodologies for stope boundary selection and medium- to long-term scheduling and highlight the need for an integrated approach. Previous integrated approaches are reviewed and an improved modelling system proposed for shorter solution times and greater applicability to mining situations. Randomly generated data-sets for gold-copper mineralization are used to investigate the model performance, describing solution time as a function of data complexity.IntroductionThe increasing need for mineral resources is driving an increase in underground mines. Lower grade mineralization with larger amounts of overburden is becoming economically viable due to technological advances; however, the software and tools available for strategic underground mine planning are not well developed. Advances in the methods used to determine underground layouts and scheduling must occur to ensure underground mining is as optimized as open pit operations, as underground mining involves many more technical restrictions.The process of determining stope boundaries and scheduling is an example of an aspect of underground mining amenable to optimization (Topal and Sens, 2010). The current industry standard for medium- and long-term planning for sublevel stoping (SLS) is to exclusively determine stope outlines and then determine an appropriate sequence and schedule accordingly. This process violates the concept of optimality as integrating the constraints imposed by pre-determining stope outlines does not allow for considerations in scheduling to influence boundary planning (Ataee-Pour, 2005). An integrated planning process that combines both stope outlines and scheduling would approach the optimal solution and hence generate more value for operations. This investigation specifically deals with the underground sublevel stoping (SLS). Other underground mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving, and room and pillar mining have unique characteristics and therefore require specific stope boundary/production scheduling considerations."

The development of a post-mining economy is generally framed as accessible and desirable and something that mining companies, consultants, and the government can, and should, plan for. It is indeed possible. Yet, most mining regions, other than the big metropolitan municipalities, find economic diversification after mining challenging, despite their grand plans, consultant reports, and company intentions. Their efforts blind them to other ideas that are often prerequisites to diversification. This paper highlights some economic and social misconceptions about economic diversification and explains where planning goes wrong. Mistakes typically stem from ignorance and misunderstandings. Planners and policy makers fail to grasp the essential requirements for economic diversification. They underestimate the structural constraints created by mining. They do not see how mine rehabilitation is linked to economic diversification. They generally do not understand the South African space economy or the nature of new economies. The paper also proposes a more careful consideration of those economic aspects that mining cities have control over, such as land use management and infrastructure. The paper further explains how understanding long-term dependencies can help prevent governance failures. The social disruption that accompanies mine decline and closure must be recognised and dealt with. The mines must plan for decline as a way to resuscitate the economy. It concludes with a framework for assessing and developing a post-mining economy.

The reasons for constructing a model of an orebody for which both the parent population and the sampling distribution are known are discussed and details of the model are given. A brief summary of Matheron's theory of regionalized variables is included, with particular reference to his kriging estimators and their variances. Using the model, a comparison is then made between these kriging estimators and other commonly-used estimators. These are compared to find the one with the minimum variance, and an analysis is included to investigate whether any of the estimators is biased. Also included is a comparison between theoretical and experimental variances for some of the estimators.

On many important occasions we, in this Institute, have been privileged to have him address us on subjects which were always of great importance and relevance to the developments in this country. In his important position as chairman of the Industrial Development Corporation and of Iscor, whatever he said carried great weight. Busy as he was he always found time to participate not only in the affairs of this Institute but in many other technical and public bodies. His passing is a great loss to South Africa and we in this Institute wish to associate ourselves with the many other tributes which have been paid to this great man. After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. Dr E. C. Hanekom (Visitor): Two years ago we used the bubble pick-up technique as developed at Anglo American Corporation for screening candidate flotation agents prepared in our laboratories. It was obviously necessary to know to what extent the technique gave reproducible results and a statistical evaluation of the test method was made using a mineral sample provided by Anglo American Corporation. A bubble of 2.0 mm diameter was used and the measuring graticule was divided into squares (units) with sides of 5.0 mm at 25 X magnification. The mineral granules had diameters from 53 to 74 mm. The bubble was loaded by depressing it against a layer of mineral grains to give an arbitrary but constant compression of 0.4-0.5 mm. It was rolled five times through 2 mm horizontal displacement. The bubble was then lifted, its load compacted by gently stirring and the projected area measured in squares (units) on the grid. Each substance was tested at 5 ppm concentration in distilled water at five points in the pH range 3-6. With these standardized conditions of operation the reproducibility of the test was studied. Four materials were tested and at each pH value the procedure of forming a bubble, picking up granules and counting the units was repeated ten times. From these results the standard deviation for a single count at any pH value was calculated for each material (Table 1. The coefficient of variation of approximately 3 per cent was relatively low and it was decided that further refinements in the counting procedure would be of doubtful benefit with the present apparatus. Similar experiments were carried out with 12 sample materials. In this case the bubble formation and pick-up were repeated four times at each pH value, the mean value was calculated for each set of four observations and final pick-up values for the materials were obtained by selecting the highest mean count. Each test was completely repeated a number of times as indicated in Table 2 and the standard deviation calculated. The results allowed the selection of the more promising materials and the rejection of poor performers at the 95 per cent confidence level. All tests were carried out by one operator. Some evidence was obtained that the method is sensitive to operator bias. In conclusion it can be said that from all the results analyzed it would appear that once operation conditions are fixed (viz operator, pH control) the precision of the method is adequate.
