The effect of varying aliphatic, olefinic, and aromatic groups in the N- and S-positions of dithiocarbamates was investigated in the selective and bulk flotation of a mixed copper-lead-zinc-iron ore. Selective and bulk flotation were found to be dependent on the type of functional group, as well as on the position of substitution.

This paper gives a technical review of the history, occurrence, mining, and metallurgy of iron in South Africa. The reserves of iron ore worldwide and in South Africa are reviewed, and potential new developments In the iron-and-steel industry in South Africa are examined. The paper concludes that the exploitation of lower-grade iron deposits will probably supplement the reserves of high-grade hematite ore in the distant future, and that, accepting this scenario. South Africa will be well placed to provide iron ore for its expected internal steel requirements, as well as supplying quality Iron ore for the export market.

A semi-empirical kinetic model was developed for the atmospheric leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in copper sulphate-sulphuric acid solution. Kinetics of the leaching process was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate and particle size distribution. The kinetic model was developed on the basis of the leaching mechanism and chemical reactions of the leaching system investigated, and was evaluated by comparing the model predictions to experimental data. The model was found to satisfactorily fit the trends in the leaching of the metals, namely copper, nickel, cobalt and iron.

The kinetics of cyanide loss were found to be first order under any given set of conditions, allowing rate constants to be easily determined. At room temperature and in the absence of activated carbon, some cyanide is lost by hydrolysis to hydrogen cyanide, but this does not occur to any significant extent at pH values higher than about 10. A higher rate of hydrolysis occurs when air agitation is used. When activated carbon is present, an additional carbon-catalysed oxidation reaction is responsible for a fairly high loss of cyanide. The evidence indicates a reaction mechanism that consumes oxygen and produces cyanate ion. Some of the cyanate thus produced decomposes to form a mixture of ammonia, carbonate, and urea, depending on the solution conditions. Additional cyanide is lost as a result of the adsorption of sodium cyanide by the activated carbon. At high temperatures, an additional hydrolysis reaction, which involves the formation of ammonium formate as an intermediate, occurs an/j is responsible for. a high loss of cyanide, leading ultimately to the formation of ammonia, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. The presence of activated carbon has no effect on the rate of this reaction.

P.W.D. ROSTER OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS (Extract from a letter from the Secretary for Public Works) In recent years a large number of professional engineers has entered the consulting field. Although the names of most of these have been placed on the Department's roster of consulting engineers either as a result of representations made by the South African Association of Consulting Engineers or by applying direct to the Department there are still some who seem to think that canvassing through an influential person is necessary to obtain commissions from the Department. The Department's roster is open to all registered professional engineers who are suitably experienced to undertake consulting work and commissions are awarded strictly on merit. I shall appreciate it, therefore, if registered professional engineers who wish to be considered for commissions by the Department could be advised that they must apply, in the first instance, to be placed on the Department's roster. On receipt of such an application a questionnaire listing all the information required by the Department will be forwarded to the applicants for completion and returning to the Department for record purposes. All names which appear on the roster are taken into account when a commission has to be awarded, due consideration being given to factors such as geographical position, seniority, capability and compatibility. AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS 1970 FALL MEETING AND EXHIBIT The Secretary for Commerce has passed to us a letter received from the American Society of Mining Engineers, reading as follows: "We would be delighted to have South Africa attend our meeting next year and to exhibit some of their mining equipment in our Technological Information Exchange. The 1970 SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit will be held in St. Louis, Mo., October 21-23, 1970, at the Kiel Auditorium. The AIME WorId Conference on Lead & Zinc Mining and Metallurgy will be an integral part of our meeting-and an added incentive to attend. It should be understood that we discourage the showing of actual mining equipment and encourage the manufacturers and suppliers to send their engineers to man the booths. We hope that the exhibits will endeavour to put across their story by means of photographs, drawings, models and literature, rather than by display of prototypes of the actual equipment. (Fellow) The influence of energy-recovery systems on the rise in temperature of water going down mines is examined. It is concluded that the, cost benefit of such systems, deriving partially from the reduced temperature rise in situations where cold water IS sent underground from surface, would more than justify the installation cost.

In South Africa and in the rest of the world, the two mica minerals that have the most important commercial value are muscovite and vermiculite. Muscovite has been making a comparatively small but steady contribution to South Africa's mineral exports since about 1960. Vermiculite mining and concentration were started by the late Or Hans Merensky at Phalaborwa during 1946. Vermiculite has enjoyed good overseas sales since then, and during the past four years has become an important earner of foreign currency for South Africa. The various aspects of the micas that could be of general interest are briefly reviewed, such as the history of their exploitation, their mineralogy and chemistry, and their mining, concentration, production, sales, and future

A mineral economic analysis of South Africa's mineral-beneficiation industry, comprising both economic theory and case studies, suggests that the domestic market has proved to be a more effective vehicle for promoting the establishment of advanced beneficiation projects than the availability of domestic raw materials. Although the domestic market plays an important role in the promotion of beneficiation by providing a secure outlet for sales, its most vital role is in the development of technological and marketing know-how that may give South African beneficiated products the competitive advantage required to penetrate export markets. The real wealth of a country lies primarily in the skills of its people rather than in its natural resources, and the domestic market plays a pivotal role in the development of these skills.

Earlier work had shown that the use of water jets at moderate pressure enhances mechanical cutting in hard rock. To assess the potential of this technique for use in conjunction with free-rolling cutters, a series of laboratory tests was conducted with disc and button cutters to determine the effect of variations in the jet and cutting parameters on the cuter performance. In these tests it was found that the use of water jets at pressure in the range 5 to 40 MPa can reduce the forces on a free-rolling cuter by 40 per cent, which represents a significant improvement in cutting performance. The reduction in thrust force was found to be dependent on jet pressure: the greater the pressure, the greater the reduction. The reduction in rolling force was independent of jet pressure over the range investigated. The results indicate that no additional improvements in cutting performance of any significance are to be gained by an increase in jet pressure above 40 MPa. The most effective jet configuration for the reduction of cuter forces was found to be four coherent water jets, two lateraly disposed on each side of the cuter and directed at the arc of contact between the cutting edge and the rock.

The production processes are described, and the properties of the two types are examined and compared. Guidelines are given for the selection of the correct grade of ferrosilicon for any particular application.

SYNOPSIS The paper opens with brief descriptions of the history, occurrence, and regional geology of South Afri¬can zinc deposits, and follows with descriptions of the resources, mining methods, and processes for the concentration of the sulphide minerals and the extraction of zinc as practised in South Africa. The end uses in the form of alloys or as salts are given in some detail. Statistics on the production and consumption of zinc in South Africa are given, and the current market situation and future prospects are discussed briefly.

The relationships between coal properties, the strength of coke, and the performance of a blast furnace were investigated by means of correlation studies, and a linear programming model was developed for the prediction of a coal blend based on these relationships. The unique feature of this approach is that it utilizes a knowledge of the minimum blast-furnace coke requirements, rather than the maximum attainable coke quality. The model predicts the least expensive coal blend that would still comply with the minimum coke-quality requirements of blast furnace. The study also confirms the existence of a relationship between the rank and caking parameters of coal, and the hot strength of coke. The effect of coke-oven operating parameters on coke quality is also discussed.

Arthur Robert Owen Wiliams died on 18th May, 1989, at the age of 84. ARO, as he was known, was educated at Malvern in England, and graduated from the Royal School of Mines in 1926. He went to South Africa as a Learner Miner with Consolidated Gold Fields at Robinson Deep.

The results obtained from the operation of a batch centrifugal ball mill are reported, together with the development of a model for the behaviour of a particle in free flight within the mill, and the introduction of a cumulative breakage rate function. Schumann and Rosin-Rammler plots show the change in particle-size distribution with time at various configurations of the mill. Graphs showing the rate of production of fines and the rate of breakage of coarse particles are included.

On the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the South African School of Mines, this paper presents a historical review of the tertiary mining education carried out by the School of Mines in Kimberley and the subsequent institutions in Johannesburg. In addition to recording and evaluating a century of mining education, it describes the current activities of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is believed to be the natural successor to the School of Mines. The comparison of earlier and contemporary academic mining activities reflects a gradual transition from the educational philosophy and objectives of a school of mines to those of a modem university department. In the conclusions, some aspects of the educational effort expended during the past hundred years are briefly highlighted.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes the rib-pillar extraction method now used at Sigma Colliery in the Orange Free State. In this method, access roadways (with a high safety factor) are developed into a block of coal suitable for total extraction; pillars that have a low safety factor are then formed and extracted immediately. The method, together with the current practices of labour management, has resulted in better utilization of the coal resources and capital, increased production and labour productivity, and improved safety.

A short review is given of the effects of corrosion fatigue on the materials used in pressurized water-reactor vessels. Selected topics such as testing procedures, test data, and mechanisms in simulated environments are discussed. The main fact that emerges is that most of the data on the growth of fatigue cracks reside below the ASME X1 1980 High-R 'Wet' design-code lines, Le. they fall within that specification. Finally, some recent advances in the understanding of the corrosion-fatigue behaviour of such materials in pressurized water reactors are highlighted.
