A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. Des mesures simultanées de déformation normale et de pression dans plusieurs joints ont permis de mieux appréhender le comportement d'un tel massif fracturé. L'article décrit dans un premier temps le site et présente les interprétations conceptuelles des mesures. Pour bien reproduire les mesures, Il est essentiel de prendre en compte certains facteurs tels que la raideur normale variable du joint, le voisinage du joint (par l'intermédiaire d'un coefficient Z), l'état de contrainte initial. L'article précise la méthode originale d'interprétation des mesures pression-déplacements qui montre la bonne adéquation aux lois de comportement non linéaire proposées. In extracting base metals from orebodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries, on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environ-mental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur, despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur are emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coalmines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Key Structure Holdings have developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful by-product of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available, the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen, the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulphate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

A prediction model, developed by Central Mining Research Institute (India) for evaluation of fire risk rating of underground coal mine panels in bord and pillar working in respect of their proneness to spontaneous heating, is presented in this paper. The concept used in this model is innovative and user friendly. This model may be applied to a panel where extraction is carried out using any of the techniques: i) depillaring with formation of small pillars as final operation, ii) extraction by broadening of galleries, iii) depillaring with hydraulic sand stowing, and iv) depillaring with caving. Here, major fire risk parameters are short-listed and divided into three broad groups in accordance with the nature of their contribution to the spontaneous heating of a mine panel. The paper describes the procedure for estimating the fire risk rating of individual groups using separate objective type models developed for this purpose. Then it evaluates the overall fire risk rating of the panel by combining the fire risk ratings of all the three broad groups. The model is tested with the field data collected from different collieries spreading across the country and with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness. Longwall panels facing wind blasts have been investigated at both Newstan and Moonee Collieries in the Newcastle Coalfield under the Wind Blast Project of the School of Mining Engineering, The University of New South Wales. The fluid mechanics involved in the compression and expulsion of air during wind blasts have been defined and the overpressure and air velocity time histories utilized to determine the wind blast parameters and define the relationship between them. The characteristics of wind blasts pressure pulses in mine roadways show some similarity with transient phenomenon like air blasts from explosives and shock waves from the failure of pressurized vessels. The peak wind velocities in roadways, however, exhibit marked deviations from theoretical predictions based on compressible fluid flow and Rankine-Hugoniot relationships applied to goaf air displacement and panel geometry. Peak overpressures and wind velocities have shown a positive correlation with the areas of goaf falls, with the values peaking off for larger areas. The field investigations have helped the mine management in risk assessment and in evaluating the success of induced caving by hydrofracturing to mitigate the hazard.

Microwave energy has been recently used in minerals processing to speed up the leaching process or to improve the liberation of targeted minerals (Al-Harahshed and Kingman, (2003); Bradshaw et al., (2001)). Applied to the roasting of sulphide minerals, microwaves allow the ?tunning? of calcine types and products quality in addition to the energy savings as opposed to the conventional roasting (Mulaba, 2006). As more than 85% of world zinc is produced through the ?roast-leach-electrowin? route, an attempt was made to optimize cost, energy and product quality for metal extraction process route. The use of microwaves was the alternative process route selected for the optimisation. Pyrite concentrate (0.17% Zn, 0.09% Cu, 35.71% Fe, 43.76% S) and sphalerite concentrate containing 43.81% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 3.86% Fe and 44.39% S were microwave roasted in a multimode cavity of 2.45 GHz with varying power levels and for different durations. The produced calcines were characterized using AAS, XRF, XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy while the determination of residual Sulphur was used as products quality control tool to ascertain the degree of roasting achieved on the feed. The leachability of the produced calcines in HCl, HNO3, H2SO4 and HNO3 + HCl has been studied in terms of the best leaching yield, process kinetics economics and environmental aspect. With 800 W power for 30 minutes, ZnO and Fe2O3 were formed corresponding to a 70% sulfur removed from sphalerite and 80% from pyrite concentrates respectively. While the roasting of the above concentrates appeared to be a first degree processes, it was noticed that the microwave assisted roasting of sphalerite and pyrite concentrates yielded lower sample surface temperature for a shorter time (i.e.less than 30 minutes) microwave exposition. Longer time (more than 30 minutes) microwave exposure showed a linear increase in temperature in function of power level used. While optimum roasting conditions were found at 800W, 30 minutes, a 10% increase of sulfur removal was noticed while pyrite concentrate was microwave roasted. Sulfuric acid was seen to give higher leaching yield than nitric acid. Zinc dissolution was hindered by the presence of franklinite.

Mining up to depths of 5 000 m would be a world first and, accordingly, no previous experience in the determination of acceptable heat stress limits, criteria or indices is wholly applicable. However, some South African gold mines are already operating at depths beyond 3000 m and much of the knowledge gained in reaching and working at such depths will be helpful in making adequate provision for acceptable environmental control at the greater depths being contemplated. Accordingly, it is necessary to take cognisance of the industry?s experience in deep-level mining and of standards and regulations already established in South Africa and elsewhere in order to ensure acceptable working conditions and control standards, that compare favourably and defensibly with those in other mining industries. The local and international use of heat stress limits, criteria and indices were investigated as it was necessary to determine to what extent any other indices, limits or criteria would be applicable to South African deep mine conditions. In addition, it was necessary to establish whether there was a single heat stress index that could be used for South African ultra deep mining conditions. It was found that an appropriate combination of heat stress indices would be required in planning for and ultimately controlling thermal conditions in ultra-deep mining. The depths being contemplated and the concomitant potential heat hazard present too great a risk for reliance on a single environmental component of heat stress, such as wet-bulb temperature at present in common use locally. The study recommends that a heat stress index, preferably Air Cooling Power (ACP), be used to design an ultra deep mine?s ventilation system and that wet-bulb temperature be used to monitor and control the system once it is implemented.

Mr K.R. Beard was born on 19th December, 1958. He attended Marist Brothers College, Observatory, and Marist Brothers College, Linmeyer. He was awarded a bursary by SEIFSA (Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa) and gained the degree of B.Sc. Eng. metallurgy at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982. He is a member of the Engineers' Society of South Africa. Mr G.A. Brown was born on 27th June, 1934, and matriculated at St John's College. He obtained the degrees of RSc. Eng. (Met.) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1957, and M. Met. at Sheffield University in 1959. He is a member of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (UK) and the Society of Mining Engineers (USA). Or LA. Cramer was born in the USA and, having received a B.Sc. degree in metallurgical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, he emigrated to South Africa in 1971. He enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Natal and successfully completed both an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

The paper presents research on the influence of the goaf methane inflow on a fire. The problem was investigated by a computer simulation of a fire developing in a goaf. A relevant mathematical model of the fire was selected, which considered both burning of coal and methane. The combustion process is very sensitive on the oxygen and methane concentrations, which was indicated on graphs of the fire temperature evolution. Examples of computer simulation for various location of the fire were considerd. Analysys of results confirms the influence of the content of the goaf methane on development of fires.

A mathematical model for bioleaching at the agglomerate scale is developed. The agglomerate is defined as a unit volume of a heap which contains a solid phase (a size distribution of ore particles), a liquid phase (stagnant and flowing leaching solution) and a gas phase (flowing air and air pockets). Leaching at the level of an ore particle is modelled using a diffusion-reaction equation, and oxidation by attached and detached microbes is treated separately. With the aid of the mathematical model, the effect of particle size distribution on the bioleaching of an ore containing a mixture of chalcocite and pyrite, and a culture of iron oxidizers, is investigated.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on corporate governance matters worldwide. The duties and responsibilities of directors of companies have come under close scrutiny, with shareholders increasing their demands for greater responsibility and accountability. Media attention and pressure groups have also had their effect. Governmental actions have supported these demands and directors have witnessed sweeping legislative changes imposing more onerous duties and liabilities than formerly imposed upon them at common law and in terms of the Companies Act. At the same time, the power of regulatory bodies has been increased to enforce this legislation and make someone pay to remedy an alleged infringement. Breach of such duties may incur personal or criminal liability, or both. Environmental protection legislation has become a particularly prevalent feature in this regard, and the number and complexity of statutes concerning the environment have increased over the past few years. Directors of South African companies will be familiar with relevant acts such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998; Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983;Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, as well as the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Now the directors of mining companies are faced with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.

The platinum mining industry has experienced a significant increase in fatal accidents. Mine accidents are in principle preventable, and there is enormous pressure on employers to reverse this trend. This paper reviews safety management systems (SMS) as well as behaviour-based safety (BBS). Based on the review, SWOT analyses are performed on the SMS and BBS processes and a model of an integrated safety management system (ISMS) is introduced. A number of fatal accidents is analysed to identify factors that contributed to accidents in the mining industry. Thereafter the potential weaknesses of an SMS of a platinum mine are exposed and the potential benefits of implementing the ISMS for this case study are demonstrated.

SYNOPSIS An analysis was made of records of accidents involving Bantu mineworkers and which resulted in either minor injuries or hospitalizations to determine patterns in underground accidents from which to formulate priorities in accident prevention in gold mines. The results showed that: (i) specific labour categories, such as inexperienced men, are exposed to certain types of hazards the extent of which warrant the separate design of safety programmes to meet their specific needs; (ii) the systematic study of minor accidents provides a dependable source of. information of which safety departments could make greater use in their efforts to control and prevent mining accidents.

ABSTRACT : An experimental programme for damage assessment was performed in the vicinity of the main shaft of Andra’s Underground Research Laboratory, currently under construction in the East of France, when the shaft is crossing the Kimmeridgian marls between 80 and 100 m depth. The mechanical behaviour was analysed by mean of convergence and displacement measurements. The disturbance into the wall was assessed using numerous methods such as measurement of sonic velocities, permeability measurement and VSP measurement in radial boreholes. The intensity of the damaged zone is low, and its extension does not exceed 0.5 time the radius of the shaft. It does not seem to depend on blasting patterns. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Ein Forschungs- und Versuchsprogramm wurde aufgestellt, um die beschädigte Zone im Bereich der Kimmeridgemergel zwischen 80 und 100 Meter Tiefe beim Zugangsschacht des im Bau befindlichen Andralabors im Osten Frankreichs zu berechnen. Das mechanische Verhalten der Formationen wird auf der Grundlage von Konvergenz- und Verschiebungsmessungen ermittelt. Verschiedene Messmethoden, wie z.B. mikroseismische Geschwindigkeite Messungen, Permeabilitäs- und Beschleunigungsbestimmungen in strahlenförmigen Bohranordnungen, erlaubten die Ermittlung des Beschädigungscharakters der Schachtwand. Die Intensität der beschädigten Zone ist niedrig, ihre Ausdehnung übersteigt nicht die Hälfte des Radius des Zugangsstollens und scheint unabhängig vom Schema der Sprengstoffanordnungen zu sein. RESUME : Un programme expérimental visant à évaluer la zone endommagée autour du puits d’accès du Laboratoire de Recherche Souterrain de l’Andra actuellement en construction dans l’Est de la France a été mis en œuvre lors de la traversée des marnes du Kimméridgien entre 80 et 100 m de profondeur. Le comportement mécanique des formations est évalué à partir de mesures de convergence et de déplacements. La mise en œuvre de nombreuses méthodes, telles que des mesures microsismiques, des mesures de perméabilité et d’accélérométrie en forages radiaux, a permis de caractériser l’endommagement en paroi du puits. L’intensité de la zone endommagée est faible et son extension ne dépasse pas 0,5 fois le rayon du puits. L’endommagement semble indépendant des schémas de tirs testés.

Traditionally, mineral reserves management at most underground mines in Zimbabwe focus on maintaining large mineral reserves so that the time between development and production is as long as possible. Historical data at Shabanie mine, a Zimbabwean sub-level caving underground mining operation, confirms this practice. However, the high cost of underground development means that the luxury of large buffer mineral reserves cannot be justified. Furthermore significant increases in the costs of production, exacerbated by the current unfavourable economic climate, make the wisdom of extending development workings well ahead of use questionable. Poor ground conditions at Shabanie mine, mean that some development ends have to be re-mined two or three times due to partial or complete closure between the time they are mined and the time they are utilized. In order to reduce the inordinately high support costs associated with closure of development ends a new ?just-in-time? (JIT) approach that provides development ends as and when they are needed, has been adopted. Accordingly a model to determine an appropriate ?just-in-time? rate of development has been created. The JIT development model indicated that the mine could reduce development rates from 330 m/month in 2001, to 160 m/month in 2002 and achieve savings of about 50% on annual support costs, but still assure customers of a long-term product supply. The mine accepted the model in November 2001 and began implementing it in 2002. Results of the implementation will be reviewed in 2003.

Transalloys produces 160 000 tons of SiMn per annum from five AC submerged-arc furnaces. The lime-ore melt from two AC open-arc furnaces is contacted with SiMn to produce 50 000 tons of medium carbon FeMn per annum. Metallics in the slag are reclaimed in a jigging plant, which has been in operation since 1999. The flow of materials between the jigging plant and furnaces has been optimised. The amount of recycle slag in the feed of the SiMn furnaces has been decreased by more than 30% which still provides satisfactory stability of the furnace operation. The jigging plant has absorbed all the additional slag generated, to recover SiMn metal. A review of the raw materials used and operating parameters for SiMn production was also undertaken. Slag to metal ratios were decreased by more than 30% by reducing the slag recycle, removing magnesite from the recipe and introducing high-grade ore. Electrode penetration was improved by reducing coke levels and by utilising more reactive coal. The pitch circle diameter (PCD) was reduced to get a better operating stability on furnace no 5 using the MINSTRAL Control System. Energy consumption on the furnaces improved by more than 15% while SiMn production increased as a result by more than 18%.

This article describes and evaluates the establishment of Kuyasa Mining including the search for a suitable deposit, the ongoing lack of finance, and market constraints. Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.
