Eldorado Resources Ltd.(ERL) uses a solvent extraction process for the processing of uranium ores. The solvent extraction plant consists of 4 extraction and 5 stripping stages with regeneration carried out as required (Wyper, 1982). This paper presents and compares characteristics of aggregate / quarrying software packages currently on the market, each product having strengths beneficial under different circumstances. To be successful, the developers must confront the limitations of their packages under a variety of situations, address the unique characteristics of the aggregate industry, and pay particular attention to the applicability of their products in real situations.

Pelletization, sintering, and pressure compaction are the most common methods used to agglomerate ore concentrates. Over the last 20 years agglomeration has grown enormously in popularity and has become a standard unit operation in the nonferrous, cement, fertilizer, and ceramic industries. However, it is in the processing of iron ores and the preparation of blast furnace feed that agglomeration is used most and its application has grown fastest (Ball, et al., 1973; and Sastry, 1977). This chapter deals with an account of the current practices and future trends in the application of computers relative to an overview of the process design and engineering considerations of the unit operation of agglomeration.

A brief overview of industrial mineral exploration and exploitation in Chile is given. World class deposits of salt, lithium, nitrate, and iodine are present in northern Chile. The potential for further exploration and exploitation of these deposits, as well as the substantial reserves of other mineral commodities such as gypsum, anhydrite, volcanic rocks, and borates are discussed. In conclusion, industrial minerals mining in Chile has considerable potential, particularly as joint ventures between foreign and domestic companies. This has been demonstrated in the extraction of nitrates, lithium, iodine, and diatomites. However, as outlined in this paper, a number of factors need to be overcome before the true potential of the Chilean industrial minerals industry can be realized.

The Coal Mine Belt Capacity Simulator (CMBCS) was originally developed to provide an improved belt capacity simulation through more detailed, flexible and realistic modeling of belt loading. While this model offered improved capacity design for conveyor belts and surge bins, it lacked the capability to simulate some key protection and segregation applications for bunkers. Recently, CMBCS was extended so that these latter bunker applications could be considered. In addition, a fear minor extensions were made to improve the model's flexibility and of efficiency. These various extensions and the steps taken to verify and validate them are described. The associated modifications in the model's input and output as well as the model's current requirements and availability are also discussed.

More and more underground mining is being conducted using the long wall method. Likewise, many new surface mines use area or mountaintop removal methods. These methods can have a significant impact on surface and ground water resources. The overall study of the effects on surface and ground water from mining is referred to as the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) determination of mining and reclamation. Collection and interpretation of information concerning ground water and surface water quality and quantity, as well as detailed geologic analysis, is required to adequately define the impacts of mining. This paper discusses the present day requirements and methodology of preparing a PHC for a large mining operation in the eastern coalfields.

Maintenance of equipment in Longwall faces plays a vital role in face performance. This is more prominent when shortage of spare parts and trained personnel occurs. A study was made in an operating Indian Longwall face for identifying the types and meantime between failures. Though the duration was not enough and study was not very elaborate, it revealed certain interesting facts. The machine availability was found to be poor, though a maintenance schedule was followed. Failure of simple parts like AFC chain connectors even resulted in loss of production of 10 times the complete chain cost. This pinpoints that a proper maintenance schedule is to be developed considering the human factors and local conditions existing in the particular country. Operations research techniques could be used in the process.

INTRODUCTION Volatile markets and pricing, increasing imports, constraining but effective laws related to the environment, health and safety and price controls lead to concerns which generated pious laws stating non-fuel policy and authorizing studies but resulting in ineffective implementation. Several commissions, reports by the Secretary of Interior and even the President have led to many recommendations but little or no action. No single comprehensive policy could solve problems which are diverse, commodity specific and not categorizable (Landsberg 1982, 1983). Thirteen laws administered by 27 agencies regulate or affect minerals and materials. Political instability created by communist regimes in Southern and Central Africa jeopardized sources of critical imported materials. This situation led to a Resource War mentality. It was feared that the U.S.S.R. was seeking to control this area and exclude the United States from resources (Vogely, 1980). The success of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries with a petroleum cartel led to fears of an Organization of Minerals Exporting Countries which might create more cartels and/or make the existing ones more effective. Economic needs of developing countries required export to maintain employment and balance of payments have led to world surpluses, weak markets, low prices, and large loans from the World Bank which have under- mined U.S. industry (Landsberg, 1982a). Un- cooperative environmental laws, obsolete facilities and non-competitive costs have led to shipping U .S. ores to other countries for processing into ingot and bars which are imported back to the United States. Yet massive internal turmoil has interrupted supplies, and led to un- certain availability and higher prices. This situation could happen again. Included in this category of critical materials with uncertain sources are metals required in the manufacture of military aircraft, which has led to concern regarding the defense industry base (Morgan 1983). Remedies have been proposed which include: updated stock piles, material substitution, international cooperation and coordination, foreign policy aimed at resolving racial and national stresses in South and Central Africa, relaxing U.S. environmental and public land regulations and action under the Defense Production Act (Goth 1982). The President's report (1983) to Congress has stated a national materials policy which recognizes: that materials play a critical role in our economy, defense, and standard of living; that public lands contain a vast untapped mineral wealth; that the role of government is to identify mineral issues and act on them; and that there is a need for long term high potential pay off research (Bureau of Mines 1983). There is a serious question as to whether or not a comprehensive national mining, minerals, and materials policy is feasible let alone necessary. One solution is to abandon the attempt at comprehensiveness and to target specific is- sues with realistic policies (Comptroller General 1979). In the following sections, the major studies of the 1970s will be reviewed, major issues yet to be faced will be identified, the principles involved in these resolutions will be reviewed,

Glass sand is a virtually pure, fine- to medium-grained, quartz sand. It is produced in 25 states from a variety of chemically different source rocks. Deriving their raw material largely from either friable sandstones or loosely consolidated sands, 59 operations produced 14.9 million tons of melting sand in 1976. About one-third of this tonnage was obtained from the Oriskany and St. Peter Sandstones. Glass-sand prospects are discussed in this paper with regard to chemistry, environment, transportation, and costs. Demand for a quality product will range from 36 million to 46 million short tons in 1995.

High-pressure roll mill comminution of heterogeneous multicomponent feeds was simulated with artificial limestone-quartzite mixtures using a piston-die press. The influence of heterogeneous interactions between components of the mixture on grinding path, energy utilization and energy split have been examined. Primary fractures are governed by differential fracture strength and attrition resistance of the components at heterogeneous contacts; subsequent secondary and tertiary fracture events are governed by coarse-fine interactions in the particle-bed. The weaker component is preferentially ground out of the feed size fraction and concentrates in the fines. Energy split among the components in the mixture is a function of their relative fracture strengths. It doubles for limestone and decreases by a factor of 5 for quartzite over the entire range of the mixing ratio.

This paper summarizes the analyses of ventilation layouts for mines that experience both spontaneous combustion. The major focus is placed on the longwall coal mine layouts used in several countries. Each of the different layouts is modeled in the form of a ventilation network. The gob of a longwall panel is the most critical location for the occurrence of spontaneous combustion. Airflow leakage paths inside the gob are simulated by using a simplified grid-like network. Computer simulations with this model indicates that the W-system of ventilation is most effective in minimizing air leakage into the gob. Homer, the U-system of ventilation, with pressure balancing behind the face support line, is also found promising for longwall panels. The magnitude of air leakage into the gob is observed to change with the advance or retreat of bee, thus requiring appropriate balancing of pressure to maintain the leakage at a minimum.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. Current developments in using lime and limestone slurries to remove sulfur oxide gases from the stacks of coal- and oil-burning furnaces have established an important need for treatment systems which include adequate disposal of resulting waste materials. The paper briefly outlines the classes of scrubbers which are using lime and limestone and describes the characteristics of the by-product material being produced. Some discussion is also included relating to methods of disposal of the scrubber underflow. Since coal-burning plants also produce fly ash as a waste material, one system developed by the author's company combines this material with the sulfur oxide by-products. The mixture is processed in a manner which converts the waste products into usable materials with acceptable structural and environmental properties. Recent interest in protection of ground waters from heavy-metal leachates has made the fly ash-sulfur oxide system an acceptable means of disposal, because the conversion products have very low permeability and adequately encapsulate soluble salts within the hardened mass. Although only limited information is available on the types and chemical requirements of limestone used in these processes, a few guidelines are presented to indicate the range of materials that can be used with good results.

Geologists, employed by the Australian Company, Metals Exploration Limited, discovered nickel laterite enrichment at Greenvale in 1967. A joint venture was arranged with the Freeport Minerals Company who had gained early experience with nickel laterite ores when building and operating the Nicaro and Moa Bay Treatment Plants in Cuba. A 5 tonne/day Pilot Plant at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, verified the amenability of the ore to treatment by the reduction and ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching process used at Nicaro. A 5 800 tonne/day Treatment Plant was constructed on the coast at Yabulu, North Queensland. This paper describes the ore body, the mining operation and the stages of treatment required to produce nickel oxide products and a mixed nickel/cobalt sulphide product at Yabulu.

Belt feeders are commonly used to meter the flow of bulk solids from bins and hoppers. If the interface between the hopper outlet and belt feeder is not designed correctly, flow from the bin may be severely compromised, resulting in problems of no-flow, segregation, flooding, etc. By knowing the flow characteristics of the bulk solid being handled and applying proven design techniques, such problems can be avoided. Relevant bulk solids flow characteristics are identified, along with measurement techniques. Design procedures for correcting problems with existing feeders as well as proper design of new feeders are presented, along with case histories of successful application of these procedures.

The mechanical mining of coal seams where roof, partings, and floor rock are extracted along with the coal often introduces large numbers of quartz particles into the mine atmosphere. This study concentrates on the quartz properties in situ and in the airborne dust to determine how they are released from the source rock and whether they are fractured by the mining machinery. Three mines using drum-type continuous miners from different geographic areas were sampled to provide a data base. The roof and floor rocks were primarily siltstones containing 5% to 25% quartz measured by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) method. Much of the work presented here is based on the morphologies of the mineral grains determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study concentrated on particles of 0.2 to 10.0 µm and on particles containing > 75% Si. Mechanically-crushed quartz particles were also examined for comparison purposes. Particle shapes from the airborne samples suggested that fractured quartz particles were rare. Particle statistics also show that the average size of quartz particles in the airborne samples were similar to the average size of all particles. The conclusion is that very few quartz particles from the source rocks are fractured during mining due to their small initial size and the protection of the associated clays.

The ability of microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and various aquatic flora to sorb metals from dilute aqueous solutions is well documented. Although microorganisms have significant potential in decontaminating waste waters, techniques and equipment suitable for bioassisted decontamination are limited. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the use of microorganisms immobilized in porous polysulfone beads for extracting toxic and heavy metals from dilute waste streams. The minus 8- plus 12-mesh beads were fabricated from high-density poly- sulfone dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF). Dried, thermally killed yeast, algae, duckweed, xanthan gum, and alginates were blended into the polysulfone-DMF, and spherical beads were formed by injecting the mixture into water. Microscopic analysis revealed microorganisms immobilized within the bead pores. The beads had excellent handling characteristics and were tested in stirred reactors, fixed bed columns, and fluidized bed columns for their ability to remove metal contaminants from several waste waters. The effluents resulting from these waste waters met or exceeded the National Drinking Water Standards for cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc. Other heavy metal contaminants readily sorbed by the beads included arsenic and mercury. Elution of metal values from the beads was accomplished using dilute nitric acid or sodium carbonate.

Once a mineralized body has been delineated, drilled and estimated from surface samples, it often happens that before the final go-no-go decision is taken, an underground sampling program is decided, very often via a ramp which hopefully will be later used to extract the ore. The cost of such a program can be close to a million dollars. On other occasions, when a property changes hands and is reexamined maybe 20 years after the original drilling program, a "check sampling" program is carefully, designed to make "sure" that the old assays are "correct". One may fear poor sampling practice in old days, or deliberate highgrading by promoters. Again one may be talking of resampling cost which may be in the six-figures range. Other similar situations include the drilling of a few large diameter holes to ascertain the validity of a majority of small diameter drill holes, or auger drilling, or back-rimming. In uranium checking radiometric information is also a problem related to the above ones.

Lateritization is a surface and near-surface process enhanced by a humid and warm climate and by good drainage. It closely follows the development of the regional landscape. The cyclic landscape development on the Guiana Shield is accompanied by a progressively thicker and more evolved laterite mantle the older, and hence in most instances the higher the planation level. The known, economically interesting bauxite and aluminous laterite eposits of the Shield are restricted to the remnants of the oldest of the Cainozoic planation levels (level I1 and 111).

Silicosis among metal miners is an ancient disease, probably as old as mining itself.' However, the primitive forms of mining were not productive of much silica dust, and the short life span of slaves used in mining probably precluded the development of more than a few sporadic cases of silicosis. Early diagnostic terms of miners' asthma and miners' phthisis suggested an occupational relationship and a tubercular component, but little attention was given to silicbsis until the turn of this century when epidemics of silico-tuberculosis arose due to the great expansion of the mining industry in the United States, especially silver and gold mining. The expansion was accompanied by mechanization and the introduction of pneumatic tools, which generated increasing amounts of fine silica dust. Mining communities were crowded and hygiene was poor.' The tubercle bacillus would probably have flourished even without the predisposition of silicosis.' As is so often the case in occupational health, biostatistical analyses first called attention to the problem, and environmental-medical studies later confirmed its existence. The bio-statistical analyses were occupational mortality statistics compiled by the Prudential Life Insurance Company in 1907, showing evidence of excessive mortality from tuberculosis and relationship to dust exposure.
