Electrostatic and/or high tension separation has been used for the separation of rare metal bearing minerals, foods, industrial wastes and so on. Since the separation is achieved by the difference mainly in surface conductivity of particles, the efficiency in humid circumstances is very low, and then, the applicability is considerably limited. We applied the following two-stage pretreatment technique to the separation process, which involves (1) adjustment of surface wettability by adsorbing surfactant on the particle surface and (2) control of the surface conductivity by spraying with electrolyte aqueous solution. The addition of this pretreatment technique has been found to have a great advantage over conventional methods. Separation efficiency is achieved even in humid circumstances and selectivity can also be obtained between insulator minerals. The selectivity is very similar to that of flotation in wet process. This separation technique will be applied not only to mineral processing but the processing of industrial waste such as electric and electronic waste materials.

Although column flotation is known to be more effective than conventional flotation for cleaning fine coal, little attention has been paid to the considerable sulfur removal potential of this process. Whereas conventional flotation can only with difficulty remove pyritic sulfur from coal, flotation columns can make this separation readily due to their greater selectivity. This project has used a modified flotation column to remove pyrite from fine coal. This column has been shown to be capable of removing 70 to 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur from coal while recovering 80 to 85 percent of the total calorific value. However, the remaining pyrite is too finely disseminated to be readily removed by physical means. Currently, experimentation is in progress using bacterially-catalyzed dissolution of pyrite in acid solution to remove ultrafine pyrite and aid in the removal of coarser pyrite inclusions.

Reagents of biological origin are becoming more and more important in the field of metallurgy, especially in the areas of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy. The advantage of lower operating cost over physical and chemical processes and the capacity to operate with low grade ores make the microbial processes further attractive. In this paper, the role of microbes directly as a reagent and microbially produced reagents or secreted metabolites in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy will be discussed. Adhesion of microbes to surfaces is known to alter the hydrophobicity of minerals. Applications include surface modification to impart hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity on sulfide or non-sulfide minerals and dissolution of precious metals. Microbes can also perform the role of flocculating agents. Biosorption of toxic and heavy metal ions by microbes are finding application in treating tailing ponds. Mechanisms associated with the use for microbially produced reagents are discussed along with some recent results.

Two aspects of tunnel support design are considered, and for both particular attention is paid to the influence of rock failure around the tunnel on the loads developed on the supports. 1) In general it has not been possible to extend analytical methods for the study of rock failure around tunnels to three dimensions. As a consequence it was not possible to calculate either the influence of the face or the actual sequence of support loading as the face advanced. The finite element method made this extension possible. A simplified analysis of the influence of the face and of the sequence of support installation has been made. The influence of the original stress field and of the rock behaviour on the length of tunnel which can be left unsupported (related to the stand-up time) is shown. The degree to which a 2-dimensional analysis can be used to approximate the final support load is shown to be dependent upon the post-failure behaviour of the rock. 2) Tunnel support design requires a knowledge of the forces and of the -rock displacements which cause stressing and deformation of the support system. A 2-dimensional model incorporating a detailed representation of several support systems, of the rock behaviour in the broken zone and of the interaction between rock and support is given. The model allows the calculation of the stress distribution in the support. The significance of the relative stiffness of support and rock on the stresses developed in the support is shown.

Computers and communications technology have revolutionized many industries. In earthmoving, this revolution has just begun. The major changes are still to come but are just around the corner. This article presents a vision of this upcoming revolution in the earthmoving industry. This vision includes basic communication, machine monitoring and diagnostics, job and business management, planning and operations, and machine control. For the industry to realize maximum benefits from the information age, it must have a vision of the future that is shared by technologists, machinery producers and miners. History of the information age During the 1970s, the information age revolutionized retailing, starting with the grocery business. By using bar codes and laser scanners, individual items were connected to the information world of computers and communications. Once this connection was made, the data on what an item was and where and when it moved became valuable information for inventory control and marketing. Not only was the information valuable, it was easy and inexpensive to collect and manipulate. The effort required to provide the consumer with the right product at the right time was reduced. Costs went down and customer satisfaction went up. But there were casualties of this revolution. Many inventory counters lost their jobs. There were also equipment casualties. Cash registers that could not interface with the digital world were discarded long before the end of their useful life.

The flotation process developed at Falconbridge laboratories utilizes sulphur dioxide and diethylenetriamine (DETA) reagent combination in the depression of pyrrhotite to allow its separation from pentlandite and chalcopyrite. DETA by itself has failed to produce flotation selectivity with samples from plant and pilot plant streams which showed relatively high redox potentials. However, DETA was found to function effectively on laboratory-generated samples under certain conditions. The results of poor depression are in keeping with thermodynamic calculations which indicate that in the presence of sufficient xanthate and DETA, the formation of ferric dihydroxy xanthate and dixanthogen is possible under oxidizing conditions. The use of sulphur dioxide alone has also resulted in a rather poor depression of pyrrhotite. However, the combined use of these reagents has resulted in an efficient and consistent separation of pyrhotite from pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Various aspects of this selective flotation system are presented along with a discussion on possible operating mechanisms.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores. It is also known for the great vertical range of its major veins - >990 m (>3250 ft). Not as well-documented, however, are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine and volcaniclastic rocks de- posited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals were precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfides and precious metal tellurides. Wallrock alteration is limited adjacent to veins and is more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias. Cripple Creek background The Cripple Creek district has a spectacular production history. More than 653 t (21 million oz) of gold were recovered between 1891 and 1959. Early published accounts documented the principal production from narrow- sheeted vein systems (Cross and Penrose, 1895; Lindgren and Ransome, 1906; Loughlin, 1927; Loughlin and Koschmann, 1935). Production also came from spectacular open-space fillings within the Cresson diatreme, also known as the Cresson “blow-out” (Patton, 1917; Patton and Wolf, 1915). Beginning in the mid- l96Os, more modern studies were initiated by the US Geological Survey (USGS) (Gott et al. , 1967, 1969; Kleinkopf et al., 1970) and by universities (Lane, 1976: Dwelley, 1984; Trippel, 1985; Thompson et al., 1985; Saunders, 1986; Birmingham, 1987; Eriksson, 1987; Nelson, 1989; Wood, 1990; Seibel, 1991).

The studies reported on in this paper were initiated to draw attention to the severe contamination problem in the Section 30 drilling program at Chimney Creek. The lithologic-subset sampling study reached a different conclusion from that presented in your paper, and I wish to comment on your subsequent analysis of the data and your conclusions. Request for more complete data In the section on subsampling, you mention that the subordinate lithologies were separated and sampled, yet only the dominant-lithology gold value is plotted in Fig. 4. In a contamination study, the reader is interested in the assay values for the individual subsets. Please include a table of the subsample assay data in your reply. Also, please indicate which analytical methods were used to arrive at the gold values in the subsampling study. Turning barren rock into low-grade ore Figure 5 is very revealing and typical of all of the cross sections in Section 30. Note the long strings of low-grade mineralization spread out for hundreds of feet below the ore zones. There were some very high gold values found in certain contaminated fractions during the subset sampling. The conclusion, here, was that the distinctive, strongly-mineralized dolomite layer was probably loose and crumbly and continued to disintegrate during drilling. This caused salting of the unmineralized rock samples below.

INTRODUCTION The phrase "subsidence control planning" can refer to the use of specific mining methods and-specialized techniques to control subsidence events or it can refer to planning for subsidence by predicting its magnitude and timing and further planning mitigation strategies. In the first case the objective is actually subsidence prevention while in the second it is a design procedure that seeks to maximize the use of both surface and subsurface resources. Neither technology is well developed at this point. The purpose of this presentation is to briefly outline the Department of Energy's Subsidence Program. This program is, in general, bases on the premise that subsidence control technology, by any definition, can be accomplished only through a thorough and rigorous understanding of subsidence phenomena. This understanding must come from many well planned and executed studies of stress redistribution and strata deformation as they occur during mining activities. There is presently considerable incentive to improve our subsidence engineering capabilities due to the desire for increased coal utilization with acceptable environmental impact. Considerable research in this area is being sponsored by federal and state governmental agencies, universities, and the coal industry. Federal sponsorship has been borne by the Department of Energy, the Bureau of Mines, the Office of Surface Mining and the U.S. Geological Survey for the most part. These agencies have carried out basic research in their laboratories and have contracted with other organizations for additional work. At this time most of the available resources are directed toward contract research, especially in DOE. It is the DOE research plan which will be addressed here.

Microprocessor-based balances are helping Keffler & Rose Coal Preparation Co. to test and ship coal faster than the competition. They provide a high level of accuracy in meeting Environmental Protection Agency standards and customer specifications .and help minimize "bad" coal. The combination of speed and accuracy has helped increase K&R's sales, while improving the company's reputation for meeting precise client requirements. The quality of coal that is assured by the company's testing-at an in-house lab using fast, precision weighing, and a computerized sulfur test-has assured K&R of a good price for its products. Recent EPA standards have strained the testing capabilities of coal suppliers. Companies involved with high-sulfur coal often use outside laboratory services that can take three to four days to report test results. Since the coal business moves much faster these days, some coal companies cannot afford that kind of time. Too much coal not up to specifications could be produced within a three or four day period. Keffler & Rose took a novel approach to this problem, installing its own in-house laboratory. The test situation immediately improved with this step. However, one bottleneck persisted for a time: the weight measurement procedure for ash, moisture, and energy content. The company first employed a mechanical balance that required time for setting up and taring. The balance provided readings on a conventional scale that was not very precise and allowed for error through subjective readings by the operator. The balance bottleneck was broken when K&R applied new technology to meet its needs: microprocessor-based weighing. The result has been a 75% reduction in weighing time and a sharp increase in accuracy. This has contributed to the test speed needed to keep up with 227-t/h production and precise K&R coal specs.

A number of improvements in the ventilation system at the Henderson Mine have been made during the past several years. A key to these improvements was the installation of a computerized monitoring and control system. Employees can determine the status of any of hundreds of devices in seconds through the use of this monitoring system. Mine dewatering pumps, the water treatment system, the ore haulage system, electric power usage as well as other devices are controlled and/or monitored. Ventilation parameters which are monitored include air flow volumes and carbon monoxide as well as the status of main surface fans, mine doors, and ventilation raise doors. Main underground fans are also constantly monitored and can be controlled remotely. These underground fans can be programmed to automatically start and stop to follow work schedules, optimizing air quality while reducing power cost. Mine air heating costs have been reduced by replacing an electrical resistance heating system with a direct fired natural gas heating system at the portal of the ore haulage tunnel.

"Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars. Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings. If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured, natural gas could migrate into the mine workings, potentially causing a fire or explosion. By the current safety regulations, the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars. The current regulations for the gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study. The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars. As the guidelines were developed for room-and-pillar mining under shallow cover, they are no longer applicable to modern longwall mining, particularly under deep cover. Gas well casing failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study.This study presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The study indicates that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability. The other important factors also include subsurface ground movement, overburden geology, and weak floor, as well as the construction of gas wells. Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure, subsurface deformations, and the response of gas well casings. The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above, within, and below the chain pillars, and the potential location and modes of gas well failures, therefore providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars.INTRODUCTIONIn the eastern United States, abundant gas wells have been drilled through coal seams that are being actively mined by longwall mining. The existence of gas wells in the U.S. coal fields, whether active or abandoned, have caused many issues for longwall mining. First of all, any gas well in the mining area has to be located by all possible means. Secondly, the gas wells within longwall panels have to be plugged, as cutting through gas wells will allow natural gas to flow into the active longwall mines. On the other hand, the gas wells within longwall chain pillars or barrier pillars can be left in place if the wells are protected by properly designed pillars."

"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. Later, lode deposits were discovered on slopes alongside the creeks. They would lease 4.6 ml (50 sq ft) lots and mine as deep as 7.6 m (25 ft). During the Civil War, the Confeder-

On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." There are differences in design aspects between steel and rubber linings in grinding mills. This paper describes the basic design rules for rubber liners for different grinding applications. When converting a mill from steel to rubber liners, the design must be changed from such familiar steel liner shapes as wedge bars and plates, wave liners, ship-lap, etc. to take advantage of the characteristics of rubber. Very little of the knowledge of the wear properties of steel can be used for the design of rubber mill liners.

Explanations of commodity price levels, or movements, commonly focus on the supply and demand fundamentals of the particular commodity, or else are assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal price histories with monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in price determination than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

During the development of the Selby Coalfield, UK, a Robbins full-face tunnel boring machine (TBM) and a Thyssen Titan roadheader were used to drive a pair of parallel spine roadways. This paper presents a summary of the comparative operational and cutting performance of both the Titan road- header and the Robbins TBM. Statistical techniques were employed to identify relations between machine performance and geotechnical parameters.

This paper describes the Boroo Gold Company (BGC) ore processing plant which is the first CIL/CIP plant in Mongolia. BGC is the first foreign investment in Mongolia since 1990 and follows the highest safety and environmental standards. Commissioning of the plant commenced in October 2003 and commercial production began in March 2004. Gold recovery is by gravity and conventional leaching and carbon adsorption. Detoxification of the leach tails is by the SO2/Air method before discharging the tails to the tailings pond. Ore types treated at Boroo are predominantly oxide with some transition ore as mining reaches the lower sulphide zone. There are several interesting technological issues and projects ongoing at Boroo which will also be discussed.

In this paper, an effort was made to get more in-sight about the parameters that can affect air sparging technique optimization. Numerical simulations were used in predicting the effects of different parameters utilizing Shell?s in house MoRes simulator. The case of using air sparging to remediate source zone is considered in this work. Different air injection scenarios using continuous and pulsed air injection techniques, with different frequencies and durations, were compared. The amount of MTBE mass removed from the saturated zone and arrived to the ground surface, through the vadose zone, was the main criterion while comparing different air injection scenarios. The simulations results showed that pulsed air injection is better than continuous air injection in removing the MTBE and that the longer the OFF time is the better the MTBE removal.
