global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.

When a fan or blower breaks down or becomes worn, customers have two choices. They can replace it or they can have it repaired. In the past, replacement was the preferred option, especially when the equipment was severely damaged or worn. Now, however, customers are discovering the benefits of repairing or rebuilding. Even when the cost of repair is more than 60 percent of the cost of a new fan, customers are choosing the repair option. The cost savings can range from 20 percent to 80 percent. In many cases, the quality of the repaired part or component will exceed the quality of the original. This is because repair engineers have an advantage over the original designers. They can see how the existing fan performed — or failed to perform — in a specific application.

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char) which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal -3.4 mm gasifier slag (~85% ash) to separate high (~100%) ash slag from low (~50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71% was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1 mm in size.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

Construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT), the last leg of the Anacostia River Tunnel System on DC Water’s Clean Rivers Project, started in September 2018 and was completed in April 2021. The 26-foot-bore earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) mined 26,737 feet at elevations between 80 to 160 feet belowground. Approximately 55% of the tunnel was cut through lower predominantly coarse-grained facies identified as the Cretaceous Patuxent Formation (undifferentiated) (PTX), and the remainder was cut through upper predominantly overconsolidated fine-grained plastic material facies identified as the Cretaceous Patapsco/Arundel Formation (P/A). Mixed face conditions were encountered in the transition from the P/A to the PTX and vice versa. This paper reviews the performance of the TBM that mined the NEBT through several unique challenges, including 8,000 feet of tunneling under the heavily developed Rhode Island Avenue corridor, major sensitive structures, cast iron water distribution mains, and other sensitive utilities.

The success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining depends on many factors. Most important is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three categories: • Geometric conditions - machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity; • Physical conditions - material properties, rock strengths, ability to dig, driving surfaces; and • Chemical conditions - acid-base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden. This article incorporates these conditions by conceptually modeling compliance-oriented contour mining methods, particularly haulback methods, using the combined front-end loader (FEL)/ truck, tractor/scraper, and FEL-truck and scraper. Engineering analyses, including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces) and drainage requirements can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized, three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple, two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

The case study of a highland area in the Central Andes of Peru, where many abandoned polymetallic mines are found, is presented. Some of these mines generate metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) or have potentially ARD generating (PAG) tailings/waste rock storage. Effluents are discharged into the first of two lakes in line, which act as reservoirs for irrigating an important valley in the desert coastal region. Drainage fees, their relationship with the deposit and the solid-wastes mineralogy are discussed, as well as variations in water and sediments composition, the benthos, and the aquatic/riparian flora/fauna in these lakes.

During the past three years, a new rear-dumping dragline bucket technology has been patented, developed and tested at North Dakota coal mines. Field testing has shown that this new concept in dragline bucket technology can improve strip-mining efficiencies by reducing cycletimes and increasing dumping radius. This article details the process, participants and the results for the development of a rear-dumping dragline bucket. Participants in the process In November 1995, the board of directors of Dakota Coal authorized the execution of a field test and option agreement and a license agreement with the partnership of D.F. Schmidt, electrical/maintenance supervisor, and Bill Lengenfelder, president of Modern Industrial. The board also authorized entering into a dragline bucket field-testing agreement with the Falkirk Mining Co.

Upon completion of an underground mine design, the planning engineer is faced with a surprisingly complex problem, “What development and mining sequence should be implemented so as to maximize the return on investment?” The problem relates to the scheduling of development headings to access stope production areas in such a way that the most money is made as quickly as possible for as long as possible. The total dollar value of the stopes, the average grade, the total tonnage, nor even the profit margin do not accurately give an indication of the “proper” mining sequence on their own. This paper will outline a method being developed by the author that can create a sequence of events that maximizes the net present value (NPV) of a given development and production design using information already being generated during the design process.

Chemical and physical properties of typical low-rank coal (LRC) ash are significantly different than bituminous coal ash. With the exception of extraneous ash, which is incorporated during mining or is due to ash partings within or between coal seams, LRC ash consists primarily of inherent ash that is bonded into the coal's organic matrix or finely disseminated mineral matter. This paper reviews the nature of LRC ash, both inherit and extraneous, and how this impacts the prospects of washing and utilizing LRCs. A literature review, as well as washability data, proximate and ultimate analyses and ash analysis of 25 Alaskan LRC seams are used as a basis for this discussion. Corrosion and abrasion properties of a series of chromium-containing cast iron balls with Cr contents ranging from 0 to 29% was evaluated and compared with austenitic stainless steel and mild steel balls. Marked ball wear tests were performed on artificial ore samples consisting of 95% quartzite with either 5% pyrrhotite or 5% chalcopyrite under a nitrogen or oxygen atmosphere. The electrochemical mechanism was investigated by correlating the corrosive wear with the corrosion currents obtained from potentiodynamic polarization curves under abrasion. An offset in their electrochemical activities was observed somewhere between 16 and 26% Cr. In fact, 26 and 29% Cr cast irons showed an excellent corrosion resistance approaching that of austenitic stainless steel. Flotation recoveries were estimated on a 95% quartzite + 5% pyrrhotite sample ground with various cast iron ball materials under an oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. Electrochemical results are found to be in good agreement with corrosive wear obtained from marked ball wear test and with flotation results.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Coal fines of less than 0.5 mm particle size, discarded as too fine for gravity separation, were subjected to flotation tests at varying pH and temperatures using modified dosages of kerosene as oil phase and methylisobutylketone (MIBK) as frother. Optimal coal recovery of over 74% was obtained using 200 kg kerosene and 4 kg MIBK per ton of coal fines at a pH of 9.7 and an ambient temperature of 26° C. The coal concentrate obtained under these optimal recovery conditions assayed 9.10% ash, 0.35% sulfur and 0.011% phosphorus, representing reductions in the ash, sulfur and phosphorus contents of approximately 75%, 43% and 8.3%, respectively. Its gross calorific value was 32.9 MJ/kg, its percentage of volatile matter measured 30.6 and the fixed carbon content was 66.3% (d.a.f). Caking tests showed the optimal concentrate has a standard welling number of 1 and is a Gray-King coke type C. These results show that the optimal flotation product could be utilized for such industrial purposes as steam raising or for processing in gasworks, but it would be unsuitable for metallurgical coke production.

Primary cementing is the process of placing cement in the annulus between the casing and the formations exposed to the wellbore. Portland cement was first used in 1903 in the Lopoc Field in California for well cementing. Since then, the major objective of primary cementing has always been to provide zonal isolation in oil, gas and water wells, i.e. to exclude fluid(s) in one zone from another zone in the well. To achieve this objective a hydraulic seal must be created between the casing and cement and between the cement and the formations, while at the same time preventing fluid channels in the cement sheath. This requirement makes primary cementing the most important operation performed on a well. Without complete isolation in the wellbore, the well may never reach its full producing potential. The industry knowledge on cements relies heavily on empirical data, but the chemistry, physics and structure of cement are not fully understood yet. The strength of concrete can be increased essentially by reducing its porosity through optimizing the size distribution of its components and filling the residual porosity of the hydrated cement phase with inorganic fillers. This approach has successfully utilized in different ways and several technologies for placing high performance oil and gas well cements have been developed over the last few decades. There are reasons to believe that the next source of improvement will lie in the fine-tuning of the hydrates themselves and of the different parameters that drive short (ionic?covalent bonding) and long (ionic correlation) interactions.

Appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt a x-ray CT analyzer for determination of coal washability has recently been developed and sucessfully tested for well characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed x-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink-float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined.
