Whether you are here for the above reasons, or for many others, your presence reflects a recognition of the importance of participating in the organizational structure of your profession.

The 2012 North American Tunneling (NAT) conference is expected to attract more than 800 tunneling and underground construction professionals. But don?t let the North American part of the meeting?s title fool you. Many of the attendees will come from all over the world. The meeting is scheduled for June 24-27 at the JW Marriott Indianapolis Hotel in Indianapolis, IN. In addition to two and a half days of technical programming, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 116 exhibitors in 140 booths. And the conference will include short courses, a field trip and plenty of social activities that will give attendees the opportunity to catch up with each other.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

NIOSH continues to conduct respirable dust control research for surface mine blasthole drilling operations. Research areas have included testing variables (shroud leakage area, drill deck cross-sectional area, shroud height, collector-to-bailing airflow ratio, etc.) that have the most impact on respirable dust control, development of a dust collector inlet hood, development of a dust collector dump point shroud, and testing of a small diameter water separating sub. This paper summarizes the results of the aforementioned research that has been completed. Additionally, past dust control research for drilling operations of both underground and surface mines completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, created in 1910 and incorporated into NIOSH in 1997, is reviewed.

Production of highly-cleaned coal for advanced utilization schemes requires close control of the coal ash content at very low levels. For this purpose, a sensitive, low-cost, robust on-stream ash analyzer is needed. The development of such an instrument based on x-ray backscatter and fluorescence is described, including features to improve its sensitivity at low ash levels. The performance of the resulting device in testing a real coal sample is discussed.

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The monitoring system has been one of the key to the success of the project.The excavation of tunnels under the water table, with a hydraulic head of over 10 m in not homogeneous soils having different mechanical properties and permeability and below existing sensitive structures, involves special ground freezing sequences and methods, as well as peculiar drilling systems and operations, such as TDDT (Trevi Directional Drilling Technology).THE NEW “C” LINE OF ROME’S METROThe world’s most complex and extraordinary Metro System is currently being built in the heart of Rome. Its underground route stretches underneath the most important monuments, churches and historical buildings.Rome’s Metro Line C is the longest urban underground railway in Italy and it is the first line in Rome to extend further east to the Great Ring Road, thus bridging the gap between the farthest suburbs and the Historical Centre. It is an original project, carried out mostly underground at a depth of 25/30 metres below road level."

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. This paper reviews the procedure used to quantify the conveyor frictional resistance on a 3.9 km (2.4 mile) long overland conveyor belt. Field torque measurements of the three drives were used to help fine tune a computer simulation of the conveyor. This enabled the prediction of the effect on various conveyor components that cold temperatures will have on increasing the throughput tonnage.

Conversion of coal into high-value gases via gasification offers significant pollution reduction and efficiency improvement benefits associated with controlled combustion of clean gases for power generation. However, current gasification-based electricity production technologies, such as IGCC do not address carbon dioxide emissions. The focus of the study is CO2 capture on CaO prior to combustion of coal-derived gases. To overcome kinetic and stability limitations associated with its utilization, CaO is distributed on high-surface area -Al2O3 and supported on a ceramic honey-comb monolith. The proposed method allows for efficient capture of CO2 from a gas mixture, as studied in a flow-through reactor system. This novel method of CO2 capture is used here to argue for pre-combustion capture of CO2 in coal gasification-based power plants. When CaO is present during the steam reforming of coal gasification gases, continuous withdrawal of CO2 from the system provides for higher yields of reforming products (hydrogen gas) by influencing the thermodynamic equilibrium of the entire system.

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions was investigated. The variables studied were temperature, stirring speed and the concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was believed to be chemical-reaction controlled, with an apparent activation energy of about 25.3 kJ/mol.

Gold Quarry is a sediment-hosted, epithermal disseminated gold deposit located along the Carlin Trend. Gold, hosted by allochthonous Ordovician siltstones and cherts, is localized at the intersection of structures sympathetic to the major Good Hope and Gold Quarry faults. The magnitude of Gold Quarry was discovered in 1979 by surface exploration and by percussion holes drilled near the Maggie Creek orebody. Four years of development drilling delineated an open pit mineable gold deposit that contains 130 Mt (144 million st) of ore at an average 1.68 g/t (0.049 oz per st) of gold and includes a high-grade core of 46 Mt (51 million st) that average 2.64 g/t (0.077 oz per st) gold. Milling of the higher-grade portion began in 1985.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

Tailings, or flotation waste, formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes because of the amount of copper they contain. With the decreasing grade values of copper ores, the utilization of wastes like tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental senses. This study was carried out with the aim of using ammonium derivatives for the recovery of copper from tailings waste produced during copper production and utilizing their complex formation characteristics. In the conditions of six hours of leaching at 30 °C in the presence of 22.5 percent ammonium hydroxide and 100 g/L ammonium persulfate, 91.47 percent of the copper was transferred into the solution, while iron was not transferred, indicating that copper can be selectively recovered from tailings.

The Getchell Mine is located in Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 70 km northeast of Winnemucca. Slope management has been a critical factor in the feasibility of mining operations since they began in the early 1930's. Although underground entries began in 1937, underground production was limited because hanging walls consisting of clay gouge and crushed rock tended to collapse into the workings. Controlling these collapses required extensive timbering. Due to these poor ground conditions, surface open-pit mining was the primary mode of production from 1938 to 1967 with only minor contributions from underground operations. Mining was suspended in 1967 due to economic pressures. From 1960 to 1967, the previous operator mined the property in three open pits. Initially, these pits were constructed with footwall benches, but these failed. These failures were aggravated by construction of 60° slopes in footwalls with shale partings dipping into the pit at 43° to 60°, resulting in large planar failures and wedge failures. In response, the previous operator adopted a slope parallel to the bedding planes.

This paper examines new copper production from waste-grade ore using Blue Planet Strategies’ DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment) technology, which aims to bridge the practical weak pregnant leach solution (PLS) processing gap in heap leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) operations by electrochemically removing metals from weak streams and generating product streams strengthened in target metals in a functional analog to SX. Weak PLS treatment was studied and used to estimate the economic and production impacts for a representative hypothetical brownfield copper heap leaching and DEMET-augmented SX/ EW operation to utilize "waste ore." Copper removal at 86% plating efficiency to below 0.1 g/L copper with power consumption of 0.55 kWh/lb copper and product strengths of over 10 g/L copper are presented. Modeling yielded approximately $2/lb total copper production and = $1/lb treatment costs with an immediate operation gross margin increase of 12% for the augmented brownfield. Potential mine life extension with an average 38% gross margin on "waste ore" augmented production at copper values of $3.25/lb was also indicated.

INTRODUCTION In the past, the cost and time required for the construction of shafts has played an important part in the planning of underground mines. For reasons that are discussed later, the economics and technology of shaft construction in the future can be expected to play an even greater role in the planning of new mines and the operation of existing mines. Indeed, the very feasibility of a proposed mining venture may depend on the cost and timing of the shaft requirements. The most commonly used shaft sinking methods used today for excavating vertical shafts are discussed and the need for new technology and methods emphasized. In one study by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, it was reported that the coal industry in the United States alone could require 170 to 190 new shafts per year on the basis of doubling current production by the mid 1980's or 70 to 90 shafts on a more moderate coal production expansion program. This study concluded that the attainment of the required number of shafts would be unlikely with the present shaft sinking resources and costs. In order to meet the requirements for shafts in the United States coal and metal mining industries, more efficient and speedier shaft construction methods will be necessary. Current shaft sinking methods are, in the main, labor intensive, and it is noteworthy that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract the work force required to sink shafts conventionally. The authors discuss the cooperative efforts by Minnesota Ore. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

In spite of the tremendous amount of research conducted in the last few decades. no single blasting theory has been developed and accepted that adequately explains the mechanisms of rock breakage in all blasting conditions and material types. Given specific test environments, conditions and assumptions, individual researchers have contributed valuable information and insight as inputs into blasting theories, although a simple "plug-in" type formula for predicting optimum fragmentation, muck pile geometry and casting distance, is still largely unresolved. There is as yet, no consistent and widely applicable theory of blasting, but only a number of limited and disconnected theories; many of which are empirical in nature and based on ideal blasting conditions. Blasting theories have been formulated and based on pure speculation, years of blasting experience on a trial-and-error approach, laboratory testing, field investigation, and mathematical and physical models adapted from other disciplines of science.

University of Idaho scientists research under U.S. Bureau of Mines Cooperative Agreement C0278001 constitutes a complex hydrogeological, hydrochemical and metallurgical mine waste management project at an existing Superfund site. Technologies that may prove useful for the extraction of dissolved metals from acid mine water and solid wastes include lixiviation and biosorption. Acid mine water is the major, long-term problem in the valley. We are attempting to delineate the major sources of ground water recharge which feed the acid mine drainage and their hydraulic properties. Grouting of recharge areas may facilitate minimizing the production of acid mine drainage if recharge pathways can be identified.
