This paper identifies physical conditions responsible for past instability of the Main Hill area in Kennecott Copper Corporation's Bingham Canyon Mine, Bingham Canyon, Utah, and describes successful stabilization techniques employed in this slide zone. Geotechnical highlights of recent slides are presented, including monitoring, geological engineering data collection, hydrology, physical rock properties, and stability analyses. Local conditions responsible for slope movement in the Main Hill zone are: (1) high pore water pressure that causes a substantial decrease in real and effective material strengths; (2) continuous structural systems that allow sliding in the more competent rock zones; and (3) broad areas containing fractured, altered , and incompetent rock and soil- like materials. The failure mode is structurally controlled and involves a circular-type soil failure in the toe region initiated by excessive pore water pressure. A surface mapping method is presented which assigns rock mass quality on the basis of block size and rock substance strength. This site characterization technique has successfully predicted slide boundaries and failure modes; used in conjunction with laboratory determined shear strengths, it has provided basic input for calculating slope safety factors in the Main Hill slide zone.

Mining in Estonian oil shale deposit mainly takes place in the Ordovician, Keila-Kukruse aquifer. The aquifer is affected by mining and is fully dried out around the working mine areas (Perens and Savitski, 2008). The groundwater level is decreased down to 30 m, to the mine floor elevation using about 30 pumping stations (Lind, 2005). The pumping rate is very high - depending on the season, ranging from 10 up to 40 m3 per ton of produced oil shale (Reinsalu et al., 2006). The Estonian oil Shale Company mined 15.5 million tons of oil shale in 2007 (Source: Estonian Oil Shale Company). In order to predict the effects, and avoid the social and environmental impacts, there is a need to continuously monitor the situation and run software simulations aiming at decreasing the pumping rate. This becomes even more important since the environmental taxes on usage of groundwater resources increase every year. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor groundwater level and quality, and develop a groundwater model for the overview of the situation during mine operations and also for a number of years after mine closure.

The Fort Lawton Parallel Tunnel was built in 1990 - 1991 by Morrison Knudsen Corporation (MK) as an integral part of Seattle METRO's planned expansion of the Westpoint Treatment Plant. The project included a concrete lined 2542 m (8,340 ft) long tunnel bored in sands and clays under the presence of methane gas and over 27.4 m (90 ft) of ground water table. The tunnel roughly paral¬lels an existing and still operating 3.65 m (12 ft) diameter tunnel originally completed in 1909. The parallel tunnel was constructed using a Lovat 4.72 m (15 ft-6 in) earth pressure balanced TBM with ribs and timber lagging as primary support. The tunnel alignment crossed under as much as 91.4 m (300 ft) of overburden as well as twin mainline railway tracks; terminating in a shaft adja¬cent to the Seattle ship canal. The project was completed in June, 1991 after a final "wet-tap" tie-in to the existing brick-lined sewer; over five months ahead of the contract schedule. This paper will describe the construction methods, job site conditions and difficulties encoun¬tered on this very challenging and successful project.

The disposal of spent ore from cyanide heap-leach processing facilities is of concern to the mining industry, regulatory agencies, and the public. Disposal of several hundred million tons of additional spent ore is planned in the western United States during the next decade, with increased amounts likely if gold prices rise. In the past decade, more than fifteen million tons of spent ore have been disposed of in the Black Hills. South Dakota's off-loading criterion for cyanide has been set by the state's Department of Environment and Natural Resources at 0.5 parts per million (ppm) as weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide. Nitrate off-loading limits vary for each mine in the state, depending on ore type and other factors. Nitrate concentrations in leachate from spent ore depositories could be caused by conversion from other nitrogen-containing species. One likely source of nitrate is residual explosives from blasting of ore. Previous work on the combustion products of nitrogen explosives has shown incomplete 3xidation (Johansson and Persson, 1970). Another likely nitrate source is degradation of cyanide to ammonia, followed by oxidation to nitrite and nitrate.

Lead and Zinc concentrates are being recovered at Rajpura- Dariba (Distt. Rajsamand, Rajasthan, India) from a complex multi metal sulphide deposit since 1984 by selective flotation employing a large number of reagents. The cost of concentrates' production has been high. Due to the increased availability of concentrates world over and to be competitive, it is necessary to reduce cost of production. An effort has been made by the R.D. Department of Hindustan Zinc Limited to bring down the cost by resorting to production of Bulk Pb + Zn concentrate with enough Ag to make it attractive to the smelters. This paper gives an account of open cycle testing and locked cycle testing in the Dowa Continous Mini Flotation unit. The metallurgical data generated in the mini flotation unit indicate the possibility of obtaining smelter-acceptable bulk concentrates containing Pb+Zn 45%, Ag 400 ppm and graphite carbon about 3%. An in-plant trial in the 3000 TPD concentrator indicated that there would be savings through dispensing with and reduction in some reagents, lower power requirement, etc. Also, a substantial increase in revenue is expected due to higher recoveries by resorting to bulk concentrate production as against individual concentrates.

The art of predicting rock excavating machine performance has become increasingly detailed and refined. Researchers using laboratory experiments and machine manufacturers using field observations have identified and defined mechanisms of failure, rock and tool interaction, and relevant design principles affecting them. Concurrently, practitioners have developed index tests which reflect rock properties relevant to machine performance. Empirical relationships between index properties and machine performance (penetration rate, cutter consumption, and machine utilization) have been established from past experience and are currently used throughout the industry. Contractors have used such relationships for estimating throughout the world. The detail in which geological, geotechnical, test, and project data, empirical relationships, and construction experience are utilized, is limited by time constraints imposed by the bidding period. To fully utilize all available data, methods of analysis, and construction experience, a simple computer program was developed for a microcomputer costing less than $7500. As a result, 1. machine performance predictions are detailed & reliable, 2. construction alternatives may be examined, 3. anticipated conditions & performance are graphically, documented & easily comparable to those encountered, and 4. results include a listing of assumptions & results of performance analyses & a graphic performance summary.

Fluxes are used to promote pyrometallurgical processes that rely on adhesion (soldering or brazing) or fusion (gas and arc welding) to join metallic surfaces. In the adhesive processes, the metal surfaces to be joined are not melted; the join is formed using a filler metal with lower melting point than the base metal. Fusion welding involves use of heat in excess of the melting point of the base metal. The fused joint may be achieved either by simply fusing together metal surfaces brought in contact with each other or by introducing additional molten metal of similar composition to form a fused joint. ADHESIVE PROCESSES--SOLDERING AND BRAZING In order for molten filler metal, solder or braze, to spread in a manner that creates a successful join; the work surfaces on the base metal must be thoroughly cleansed. Fluxes remove stubborn oxide films and other surface contaminants, promote wetting of the work surfaces, add fluidity to the solder or braze, and enhance workability and ease of spreading. Brazing processes involve higher temperatures than those reached in soldering. Brazing fluxes, which must remain active and effective at the higher temperatures, differ from those employed in soldering. Some common fluxes used in adhesive processes are rosin for soldering tin and electrical connections, hydrochloric acid for use in soldering galvanized iron and other zinc surfaces, and borax for brazing. Soldering and brazing are similar processes, the primary difference being the temperature at which the joining operation is carried out. Soldered joints, produced with low-melting-point fillers (solders) that melt and flow at temperature less that 450°C (Althouse et al., 1988) can sustain loads of 1 to 1.7 MPa for extended periods of time (Anon., 1966). Brazing involves the use of filler materials with melting points commonly above 500°C and generally provides stronger joints than those obtained with solder. Both processes require local application of heat to melt and spread the filler so that the molten filler can wet (adhere to) the base metals by alloying and diffusion. Soldering Soldering is a means of joining metals by adhesion using a metallic bonding alloy as the filler, commonly a mixture of lead and tin. However, the adhesion of solder depends more on its ability to be keyed into minute surface irregularities than on alloying. The most familiar application is to provide and secure electrical connections. Soft solders can range from 1 to 70% tin with the remainder mostly lead. However, for general-purpose, soft-solder work, the alloy is commonly 50% lead-50% tin. Higher lead contents provide a wider range in the melting temperature and, for this reason, a 60% lead-40% tin alloy, which yields a mushy mixture, is used for wiped joints in lead sheet and pipe work. Conversely, 40% lead-60% tin alloys are used in soldering tin and other low- melting-point materials for which a narrower range of melting temperature is required. There are numerous other solder compositions such as tin-silver, 95% tin-5% silver and antimony-tin, 95% tin and 5% antimony (Carlin, Jr., 1992). Heat needed to melt and spread the solders is commonly provided by electrically heated, copper-tipped soldering irons or by means of torches; the solder is applied by hand, usually face-fed by means of wire. For wiped joints in plumbing and lead-cable splicing, the solder is manipulated with cloth pads. The molten solder wets the joint surfaces and is drawn, by surface tension, into minute fissures and capillary openings. Other applications involve use of induction heaters and furnaces with pre-shaped solder appropriately placed prior to fluxing and heating. In some processes, the joints are immersed in molten solder. Constituents and Role of Soldering Fluxes: Soldering fluxes generally fall into one of three categories: highly corrosive fluxes, intermediate fluxes, and noncorrosive fluxes. These same categories are sometimes designated inorganic, organic and rosin-based respectively (Althouse et al., 1988). Common constituents of each group are discussed briefly below. Corrosive Fluxes (Inorganic). Work with aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, high alloy steel, aluminum bronzes, and silicon bronzes is carried out at temperatures in the upper portion of the range for solder operations. Soldering these materials requires use of highly active, corrosive fluxes to remove and prevent the formation of the especially stubborn, hard, oxide films that form on these materials upon exposure to the atmosphere. The corrosive fluxes consist of inorganic acids and salts that are applied either as pastes or dry. They are active at elevated temperatures and, since they remain active after the soldering is completed, must be completely removed. The main constituent of most corrosive fluxes is zinc chloride with a melting temperature well above the solidus temperature of most commercial tin-lead solders. It is made by the action of hydrochloric acid on zinc. When zinc chloride is used alone, un- melted particles of this corrosive salt get caught up in the joint and weaken it. For this reason, other inorganic salts such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sodium chloride (NaCl) may be added to lower the melting temperature. A mixture of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride is very effective because the excellent oxide reducing properties of ammonium chloride and the protective action of the molten zinc chloride combine to produce a fluxing action superior to that achieved when either is used alone. This paper quantifies in universal units (energy units), the annual decrease in the mineral endowment of the planet. This is done for some important extracted non-fuel minerals, namely aluminium, cobalt, chromium, copper, gold, lead, uranium and zinc and is compared with the depletion figures of conventional fossil fuels. The results of this study reveal that each year, the decrease of the global non-fuel mineral bonus provided by Nature is 2 to 3 orders of magnitude greater than the loss associated to the burning of fossil fuels. Particularly for 2008, the depletion in mineral wealth of the studied commodities was about 20 times greater than that of fossil fuels. The assessment methodology is based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics. It quantifies the useful energy (exergy) required to concentrate a mineral from a completely dispersed state in the crust, to the conditions of composition and concentration found in the mines. Exergy can be a useful measure for quantifying the mineral depletion caused by man, as it takes into account the main physical features that make minerals valuable: composition and concentration. This analysis enhances and puts numbers to the importance and necessity of material reuse and recycling.

This paper examines the potential for controlling longwall-induced subsidence by pneumatically backstowing waste rock into the void created by mining. The paper also examines scheduling the process as a unit operation of the mining activity. Based on a review of background literature and interviews with representatives of various mining companies, public-interest groups and state and federal regulatory agencies, a hypothetical case-study evaluation of pneumatic stowing at a southwestern Pennsylvania mine was conducted. The study indicated that current stowing technology cannot keep pace with the production potential of longwall systems in the United States. Further, at the mine used in this case study, concomitant stowing would reduce subsidence by only 50% of what would normally be incurred during full longwall caving, and the longwall coal-production rate would decrease from 3,630 t (4,000 st) per shift in the nonstowing case to 1,360 t (1,500 st) in the stowing case. A preliminary cost analysis reveals that pneumatic stowing would add from $5.79 to $11.57 per t ($5.25 to $10.50 per st) to the operating cost of producing coal at the case-study site.

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

The introduction of liberalisation in Dutch mineral provision has created a lot of uncertainty on how and where to supply for the need of construction raw materials. Some possible effects of this policy shift are: 1. the extraction of materials from small pits with truck transport, 2. an increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, 3. the usage of marine dredged materials, 4. more input of secondary substitutes. The outcome of this policy and the resulting marketbehaviour have consequences for transport and infrastructure and hence for sustainability issues. Mineral provision, on the other hand, is also influenced by the availability of infrastructure. Insufficient transport capacity could hamper the development of mineral projects that render benefits to society. (Even) in a liberalising market for mineral provision, the central and local governments have an important role to play with regard to infrastructure and the effects of transport. Various trends point towards an increasing internationalisation in mineral provision. What will increasing trade and increasing influence of the market mean for transport infrastructure? How should increasing transport be judged with respect to sustainability? In the sustainability discussion these questions will have to be answered on a national as well as on a European scale.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, tests were conducted with a commercial poly-fiber reinforced shotcrete mix to develop a practical means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength. Full-scale tests were conducted in a test frame equipped with concrete panels having three distinct surface roughness profiles. Adhesion test fixtures either embedded or epoxied in the shotcrete were overcored into the underlying concrete, and direct tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength of the shotcrete cores to the substrate after a selected shotcrete curing interval (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, or 90 days). Measured adhesion strengths typically ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa depending on the curing age of the shotcrete samples. This paper presents the results of these tests, describes the portable test system components, and addresses some of the design issues encountered in the development of a rugged and reliable method for determining shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines.

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. Increased selective sorption capacity in aqueous systems. 4. Selective chemical reactivity, such as oxidation or hydrolysis. This property is required for removing

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

During the last ten years, Paques Inc. has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems to remove sulfur compounds from water and gaseous streams using biotechnological processes. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters in two biological steps. In the first step, sulfate-reducing bacteria converts sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The HS reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. In the second step, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. The Budelco Zinc Refinery in The Netherlands installed a groundwater treatment system to remove metals and sulfate using the biological steps described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 and has been treating 5,000 m3/d (180 thousand cu ft/day). A pilot plant began operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and for the selective copper recovery from leach water. Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. In response, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal-mining equipment, an example of which is a roof bolting machine. Field studies show that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that a roof bolting machine operator would be exposed to and it contributes significantly to the operators? noise exposure. NIOSH has determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. NIOSH and the Corry Rubber Corporation have developed a bit isolator that breaks the steel-to-steel link between the drill bit and drill steel and a chuck isolator that breaks the mechanical connection between the drill steel and the chuck. This effectively reduces the noise radiated by the drill steel and chuck and reduces the noise exposure of the roof bolter operator. The paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling by 3.7 to 6.6 dB

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated longwall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every l.5 m [5 ft] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 dBA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

The new Lyon-Turin railway project involves the construction of a 57 km twin-tube tunnel between France and Italy. Pini France (project leader) and Systra-SWS are the designers of Construction Site 8 (CO8). This part of the project includes the construction of the tunnel portal on the Villard-Clément platform, two 2.8 km long tubes of the base tunnel in the direction of Saint Martin la Porte, the cross-passages between tubes and the niches. This paper presents the general approach followed to design the temporary support for the base tunnel, cross-passages, and technical rooms. The design of the temporary support accounts for the variability of the ground and water conditions, the excavation attended behavior, the construction planning and the identified geological hazards that could be encountered along the alignment. Particular attention is paid to the intersections between the tunnels both in terms of numerical modelling and construction methods and phases. Two types of intersections are present in the project: the intersections between the cross-passages and the base tunnel and the intersections between the base tunnel and the niches. 3D models have been developed for the tunnel intersections.

Contract 75-124-211 extends along the Chicago River from Roosevelt Road on the south to Ogden Avenue on the north. In addition a branch tunnel runs east from approximately mid-project ending near Lake Michigan. The contract was bid on December 14, 1977 with three joint-ventures submitting bids. Of these the joint venture of J.F. Shea Co., Inc. Walnut, California, (Sponsor), Peter Kiewit Sons' Co., Omaha, Nebraska and Shea Company and Associates, Walnut, California was low with a bid of $101,976,680.00. The MSD awarded the job to the Joint-Venture on January 5, 1978 with a scheduled completion date of January 23, 1983. The project consists of the following major items of work: (1.) A 25'-0" minimum diameter Construction Shaft, 220 feet deep (2.) 13,726 Linear Feet of 30'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (3.) 6,648 Linear Feet of 13'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (4.) Seventeen concrete lined Drop Shafts varying in finished diameter from 4'-0" to 12'-0", and each approximately 250 feet deep with chambers and connections to the tunnels varying from 100 to 1300 feet in length.

Martin County Coal Corp. is located in Martin County, KY, in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The company's total leasehold covers more then 133.5 km' (33,000 acres). Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corp. is currently 2.2 Mt (2.5 million st). In certain years, though, it exceeded 2.7 Mt (3 million st). About 45% of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal's work schedule consists of two nine-hour shifts a day, 240 days a year. Topography The topography of the area is characterized by rugged hills and ridges and sharp V-shaped valleys demonstrating a cliff and slope topography. This topography consists of alternating benches of outcrop sandstone and slopes. The deep valleys have been carved out by many small streams in the area. These streams are contained within the steep slopes of narrow, twisted mountain ridges. The ridges are underlain by massive sandstones that, being resistant to erosion, create sharp, rocky morphology. The height of the hills above the valley floors ranges from 122 to 244 m (400 to 800 ft).
