The processing of earth observation sensor data by digital technology is almost two decades old. Only recently, however, has this technology become practical and economical. The reasons for this are interesting to analyze, and they provide some insight into what the future may bring. Some of the earlier activities and their limitations, current systems and their applications, and future technology direction are summarized.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

Today the electrolytic zinc industry is facing unprecedented environmental pressure and low metal prices. Zinc plants have to decide how they will dispose of iron residues in an environmentally friendly way without major capital expenditures. Only low-cost producers will survive, so companies must continuously improve to stay competitive. Therefore, the challenge of the process engineer is to find innovative solutions to the industry's problems. The P.W. Gillibrand Company holds 705 placer and lode claims in the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. These claims contain large tonnages of ilmenite, magnetite and apatite with anomalous quantities of zirconium (zircon), niobium, vanadium and rare earth elements. Stockpiling of heavy mineral concentrates associated with aggregate mining from alluvial pits has occurred since 1984. The limited reserves of material from these alluvial deposits and their relatively low heavy mineral grades caused Gillibrand Company to initiate an extensive drilling and exploration program to develop the hardrock resources of ilmenite, apatite and magnetite.

As the world tension relaxes and as the interest and taste for consumer products change, complacency is beginning to prevail over the needs of minerals and primary metals. The current trend towards resources and energy conservation calls for miniaturization of consumer goods, and lowers the demand for virgin materials to produce goods and services. Challenged by the third world countries with high grade ores and low labor costs, industrialized nations with lower grade ores are being pressed into more efficient operation through technological innovation, while protecting the environment. In many countries, domestic mines were forced to close since the oil crises due to rapidly rising energy and labor costs. Research in conventional mineral processing needs to be directed towards breakthrough technologies in order to maintain the competitive edge in the global marketplace. Research activities will provide new challenges in the processing of solid waste and waste water for environmental remediation as well as for resource conservation, in the preparation of new functional materials of extreme purity and/or unique properties for high technology applications and in the development of such future resources as deep sea minerals and extraterrestrial materials.

The development of roasting technology for the oxidation of sulfides in refractory gold ores is discussed. Case studies covering operations dating from the mid-1930's to the present day are used to illustrate this development. The roasting of ores and concentrates is reviewed and various gas cleaning flowsheets are discussed with particular reference to environmental requirements. A sequence chart is provided to show the development path of a potential roasting project.

The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on the kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated-weathering tests that were performed in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests, the samples were crushed, ground and stored for various periods of time in either argon or air. The test results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The interpretation of the differences was based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings that changed with time. "Dry" oxidation produced surface coatings that had properties different from those produced by "wet" oxidation. The significance of these results to pyrite/reagent interactions during flotation and in evaluating the acid-mine-drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. The graphite industry as a whole has gone through many changes over the years. Most of the graphite used in major applications since the turn of the century were basic natural or electrode by-product synthetic materials, processed using simple crushing, screening, or grinding techniques. In the mid 1970's new thermal technology was developed which changed the face of the .graphite industry, and opened up a panacea of new products and capabilities. Materials produced through this new technology have helped revolutionize new products and processes in industries including automotive, batteries, fuel cells, electronics, iron, lubricants and steel. This paper outlines the continued improvements in those industries as well as the as well as the outlook for new technology in this rapidly changing area.

Longwall systems are used to mine approximately 50 pct of the world's total coal production. Single entries are the predominate method of longwall development in Europe and Asia where mining conditions are much more severe than those encountered in the United States. During the 1970's and early 19801s, the Bureau of Mines and the coal mining industry invested nearly $20 million in single entry and related research. This report reviews the accomplishments of single-entry research in the United States. Two U.S. single-entry field projects are described; the Sunnyside Single-Entry Project conducted in central Utah, and the Tunnel Boring project conducted in northern West Virginia. Two other important studies are discussed, the Single-Entry Study by NAMCO and the Single-Entry Design Study by Ketron. Inc. This review compares the resulting technology with European counterparts to further assess the utility and efficiency of the U.S. systems, and final1 y, it discusses future research and development options which would lead to safe and productive single-entry longwall development in this country.

Introduction Troublesome shales have plagued the petroleum industry for more than 50 years. Unstable boreholes have been experienced when drilled into shale formations; sane have been studied almost at the beginning of rotary drilling. A little progress has been made since then, but much is still to be learned. No simple solution exists so far, but good drilling practices combined with good mud practices have been helpful. It is well known that shales in general have a strong affinity for water, and when water is adsorbed, the stability of the shale section of a well is reduced; cohesive strength will be re- bed, properties will be altered and shale will generally expand and/or crumble. The amount of water a shale will adsorb depends on the characteristics of its clay mineral and the ionic concentration of surrounding fluid. Fluid loss and the resulting hydration of an unstable formation can lead to serious downhole problems. The rate of fluid loss depends greatly on the permeability of the deposited cake. In impermeable formations, however, there is no loss of fluid into the formation. As such, shale, because of its very low porosity and almost no permeability, could be termed impermeable. Yet there is strong evidence that shale surfaces are wetted by an invasion of fluid into the formation through microfractures and jointed planes. It is this wetting that causes the shales to swell and slough into the hole, resulting in problems such as increased mud volume and treating costs, bridges and fill-up, stuck pipe, overgauge hole, poor cement jobs and increased cement requirements, and logging and completion difficulties. Drilling operations have been defeated by severe shale problems, resulting in & hole being plugged and abandoned after several weeks of drilling. Shales are we1l known as being difficult and costly to drill. Numerous fishing jobs have plagued drilling operations, and the cost of reaming tight holes ad weighting up the drilling mud to control shale sloughing has been high. The concept of controlling water loss to stop sloughing was introduced in the 1920's. It was known-then that calcium in fresh water re- strains clay £ran excessive swelling (theory of osmosis) . This reinforced the belief that calcium-based muds such as lime, gypsum and calcium chloride should minimize hydration of clays. Lime muds were then introduced for this purpose and others in the 1930-1940 decade1. They were used for shale inhibition but were not effective. In an attempt to improve them, a special calcium-type mud beam popular during the 1950's. Hole enlargement continued and they too were considered ineffective. During & early 1960qs, papers were published claiming that shale swelling could be prevented by using high concentrations of chemical thinner called Chrane Lignosulfonate1. This began the era of highly treated lignosulfote muds. Unfortunately, the hole enlargement problem continued. During & mid-1960’s, oil based muds were used for the purpose of inhibition of shales. Not until 1966 did Mondshine2 suggest that the water phase be saturated with calcium chloride. The cost of using oil based mud was considered by most operators not worth the additional hole stability. The potassium chloride-polymer muds were also used in many fields in the United States and western Canada. The use of these muds has been claimed to prevent clay swelling by inhibition and encapsulation in sane areas of western Canada. They are also expensive and their ueneral application is still experimental. To reduce filtrate loss when sloughing shale becomes a problem during drilling is a reasonable practice. This study will investigate the use of cationic organic additives to mud to form a protective barrier between the shale - which are primarily composed of clays - and water that will keep water from entering the microfractures and will also prevent them from hydrating. In so doing, an understanding of modern clay chemistry and & dispersive properties of cationic additives in water based systems will be our most valuable tools. This study will also present and solve a mathematical model for simulating cation transport phenomena in fractured shales using the Framdlich equilibrium adsorption isotherm. The studies will analyze wellbore failure and stability as affected by cationic organic material.

Accurate toughness determinations are difficult to achieve in the case of soft or heterogeneous rocks. The existence of a large process zone ahead of the crack tip makes the determination of the apparent toughness crack length dependent, in the case of subsized specimens. In order to use practical size specimens, the authors propose a new toughness test, the Modified Ring Test, which pre- vents a largely developed process zone to form ahead of the crack tip. This test has also the advantage that its geometry is core-based. Numerical and experimental results are discussed.

In 1986, a cooperative effort by the Homestake Mining company, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was initiated to determine shaft stability while recovering high grade ore in a nearby pillar. Premining finite element simulations indicated the shaft would remain in elastic ground. Six years have elapsed and, despite some initial concern during the first lifts, it appears that the bulk of the original reserve will be safely and profitably recovered. An integrated application of rock mechanics tools from laboratory testing through numerical modelling to mine measurements and observations contributed substantially to the operational success of the project.

Radiation protection in uranium mines and nuclear reactors is compared, with the objective of determining if any radiation protection practices which have worked well in one area can be adapted to the other area, especially from reactors to mines since radiation protection is more highly developed in reactors. Several areas are identified where improvements can be made in radiation protection in mines, the most important being improvement in ventilation at the workplace, greater attention to special monitoring during upset conditions, and a need for a substantial increase in radiation protection staff. It is concluded that, although considerable room exists for improvement, the general approach to radiation protection presently being followed seems appropriate for the circumstances encountered in mining.

INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. During the past 12 years, use of longwall methods to mine coal in the United States has continually in- creased. Although these methods offer several advantages, health hazards often exist because of unique and difficult problems in the control of respirable dust. This paper discusses the results of respirable dust studies conducted on United States longwall mining operations in 1972and 1978. Current engineering control methods (ventilation, water application and use of machine cutting parameters) and administrative controls for minimizing employees' respirable dust exposures are discussed.

Design of structures in rock based on ultimate limit states or strength criteria is unrealistic. The fracture process which inevitably occurs in rock around an underground structure is an energy release phenomenon. The development of fractures and associated displacements around a structure may therefore be more logically described using strain energy concepts and design may sensibly be based on serviceability limit states.

Since our time is very limited, I would like to relate to you as best as I can a few important areas that I think may be helpful. 1.) The Real Difference between Dense Phase and Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying: Within the many variations of so called Dense Phase conveying, it is often difficult to determine to what degree a system is Dense Phase or if, in fact, it is a Dense Phase system at all. A system that appears and is generally known to be Dense Phase can under certain operating conditions perform as a Dilute Phase system. If, for instance, a high pressure system, which is generally a Dense Phase system, operates at 60 PSIG, say 4 atmospheres, utilizes enough air volume, the conveying velocity will easily exceed the normal design velocity of a typical Dilute Phase system. Now, on the other hand, a low pressure system which we will term a Dilute Phase system, operating at 15 PSIG; say 1 atmosphere, can convey a given product at well below the saltation velocity, like a Dense Phase system.
