Sulphide melts formed in the course of smelting of nickel and copper-nickel feed (matte) actually are sulphide-metallic melts since sulphur contained in the melts is in deficiency with respect to metals. The level of metallization is rather relevant feature of sulphide melts and is widely used in calculating material and heat balances for pyrometallurgical processes. Despite of the above parameter? importance, the investigators have no single opinion on what should be understood under metallization level and the method of its determination. In the present study we present the results of our own experimental and theoretical researches that have allowed determination of some mechanisms of sulphide melts? crystallization. Based on the mechanisms revealed new scientifically justified approach has been offered for determining level of metallization of the components present in sulphide melts. It has been demonstrated that sulphur distribution between the melts is substantially different from generally accepted concept.

"Gas-stirring ladle treatment of liquid metal has been pointed out for a long time as the processing stage mainly responsible for the inclusion population of specialty steels. A steel ladle is a complex three-phase reactor, where strongly dispersed inclusions are transported by the turbulent liquid metal / bubbles flow. We have coupled a population balance model with CFD in order to simulate the mechanisms of transport, aggregation, flotation and surface entrapment of inclusions. The simulation results, when applied to an industrial gas-stirring ladle operation, show the efficiency of this modelling approach and allow us to compare the respective roles of these mechanisms on the inclusion removal rate.IntroductionThe reduction of the weight of high performance materials together with the improvement of mechanical properties and the increase of the recycling of used metal are new challenges which emphasize the importance of metal cleanliness. Ladle treatment of specialty steels has long been described as the secondary metallurgical process mainly responsible for the non-metallic inclusion derived from the deoxidation process. The treatment is accomplished by blowing argon through one or more porous plugs for the purposes of desulphurization, minor composition adjustments, and inclusion removal. Gas injection is applied on routine basis to achieve both the stirring of the liquid bath (thermal and chemical homogenization) and the entrapment of the inclusions by the bubbles (flotation). Furthermore, the turbulence produced in bubble swarms enhances the probability of inclusion collisions and makes aggregation the first mechanism for particle removal. The physical processes involved in gas stirred ladles are numerous and complex owing to the three dimensional and multiphase (metal-gas and inclusions) nature of the reactor. Despite these difficulties, the population balance equations can be implemented in CFD code11'21 and combined CFD-PBM (computational fluid dynamics - population balance method) models are investigated for steel ladle processes13'41 and produce very promising results in terms of inclusion removal efficiency."

The Nb-rich phase generated by the addition of trace amounts of Nb(<0.1wt%) \ and the effects of different content of Nb on the morphology and distribution of graphite in ductile iron were studied in this paper. The results showed that when the content of niobium less than 0.1wt%, the two-dimensional morphology of Nb-rich phase existed in microalloyed ductile iron were mainly regular pattern such as square, triangle, polygon etc. Besides, Nb-rich phase in large size distributed in the matrix with a certain distance from graphite. With the increasing amount of niobium, the dispersion degree of graphite diameter, average diameter and roundness increased slightly, and the number of graphite decreased slightly.

Digital imaging systems are particularly useful in microscopy, because they make it possible to extract information not readily accessible by manual methods and to display that information clearly. Computer-aided imaging systems analyze, process and compare images, and of these, image analysis is most useful in materials science. Image analysis quantifies the microstructure by making measurements on the entire field or by measuring the size and shape of features individually. Even true surface area can be calculated. Modem image analyzers make thousands of measurements in seconds, leaving the investigator to interpret the data and relate them to process and material properties. Image processing, which may be necessary to prepare an image for analysis, includes everything from simple contrast transforms and kernel filters to complicated processes such as grain boundary reconstruction using artificial intelligence. An example of image comparison is point-by-point screening of X-ray maps of different elements to extract phases. In all of these operations, the computer makes a large number of measurements in seconds and returns information that could not be realistically obtained by manual methods.

There are new applications growing at a very strong pace (such as battery alloy), applications that are now penetrating their target markets with significantly increased growth rates (such as bonded NdFeB), and some applications that became more complex requiring much more sophisticated products (such as catalysis). Rare Earth producers have to spend significant ressources in order to monitor the market trends in order to predict the demand and then adjust their raw material mix. Even though there is a greater diversity of raw material available, there is still some Rare Earth elements that are in excess, while other are just in balance. As a consequence rare earth producers invest heavily in R&D in order to develop new applications for these excess elements.

"Stricter environmental regulations demand for safer treatment and disposal of incineratior fly ashes. So far no sound technology and processes are available for a sustainable and ecological treatment of the waste incineration ashes, and only partial treatment is practised for temporary and short-term solutions. New processes and technology need to be developed for comprehensive utilization and detoxification of the MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) incinerator residues. The objective of the current research is to better understand the behaviour of the environmental harmful elements during low or high temperature treatment, and to find an optimum route for an efficient processing of the incineration fly ash. In the present study, the fly ashes including boiler ash and ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) ash sampled from a MSW incinerator were washed with warm water, and the residues were dried and sintered or vitrified at high temperatures. The solutions from ash washing were analysed, and will be treated for salt extraction and purification. The ash residues before and after thermal treatment were also analysed. The results of vitrification and thermal behaviour were compared with those from the ashes without pre-washing. It was found that water pre-washing is an efficient way to remove certain water-dissolvable volatile salts such as chlorides, and thus the secondary emissions during vitrification could be reduced. INTRODUCTION The air pollution control residues from MSW incineration are classified as harzardous waste, including boiler ash, ESP ash and filter cake. The boiler ash is the firstly settled flue dust in the dust-collecting equipment under the boiler, the ESP ash is collected by an electrostatic precipitator in the second step, finally the flue-gas is further cleaned by the wet-scrubbers and residues are accumulated in the filter cake. Both the boiler ash and ESP ash are classified as hazardous materials, harmful to the environment due to the high concentrations of environmental hazardous elements. However, due to the different locations of the ash collection, the boiler ash has different compositions compared to the ESP ash, and is considered less toxic. Fly ash is generally toxic and with low bulk density, and has to be treated before final disposal. The current industrial practice is normally the landfilling after partial detoxification such as cement solidification."

The ISASMELT? process is a submerged lance smelting technology operating in smelters in Australia, the USA, Belgium, India, Germany, Malaysia and China. Further plants are under construction in Peru and Zambia. Following the invention of the Sirosmelt lance technology Mount Isa Mines recognised the commercial potential in the novel top blown bath smelting process and embarked on a development program that has lasted more than 25 years. After successful operation of pilot plants and demonstration plants producing copper and lead, Mount Isa Mines decided to license the technology to external companies. Since the purchase of Mount Isa Mines by Xstrata in 2003, Xstrata Technology has assumed responsibility for transferring the technology to ISASMELT? licensees. In the 15 years since the first commercial furnaces started operation plants have been constructed (or are under construction) with a combined annual smelting capacity of more than six million tonnes of concentrates or secondary raw materials. Process development continues on the commercial scale plants at Mount Isa and elsewhere. Many of the improvements implemented by plant operators have been passed on to, and adopted by, other licensees. Exchange of ideas and technical improvements occurs through ad hoc visits to fellow licensee sites and through regular licensee workshops arranged by Xstrata Technology. This paper updates the reader on the status of various ISASMELT? plants either operating or under construction. It highlights the important role that the technology provider?s operational experience plays in ensuring that new smelting plants ramp up quickly to nameplate capacity.

Wrought lead-calcium-tin anodes developed by RSR Corporation have improved the performance compared with the other lead alloy anodes. These anodes have been in continuous service at various locations around the world for as long as fourteen years. Calcium provides mechanical strength to the anode to prevent the deformation while tin increases the mechanical strength, reduces the rate of corrosion, prevents the formation of non-conducting layers on the anode surface, and dramatically improves the conductivity of the anode. Tin is also instrumental in developing the unique rolled structure of the anode which leads to the reduced rates of corrosion, longer life, and improved oxygen evolution. Cobalt additions to the electrolyte further enhance the oxygen evolution and improve the anode life. Higher current densities and higher operating temperatures reduce the anode life. The unique patented method of attaching the rolled anode sheet to the bus bar substantially reduces the resistance of this important joint and offers the substantial savings in power over the life of anode.

Considering the in-situ hydrometallurgical route, as well as the pyrometallurgical route in works or conversion facilities that buy or process white metal and produce copper and other metals associated with this such as gold and silver, besides sulfuric acid, plants which should be strategically located in zones with high sulfuric acid price to make this a product which contributes to the profitability of the business.

During the past six years, most states have promulgated water quality regulations which contain numerical aquatic life standards for heavy metals. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) promulgated national water quality standards in 1992 which also include numerical aquatic life criteria for heavy metals. Numerous wastewater discharge permits have been issued by the states and EPA to industrial facilities which include low microgram per liter heavy metal limitations. In many instances, the limitations are below detection limits or treatability limits using state-of-the-art analytical methods or treatment technologies. This paper will discuss options for conducting studies, including the use of water-effect ratios, metal partitioning coefficients, and recalculation procedures to develop site-specific metals criteria and higher permit limitations. The installation of expensive metal treatment systems to remove trace metals may be avoided if higher permit limits are indicated by the site-specific studies.

This paper will review work done in our laboratory on the formation, thermodynamics and crystallization of aluminum based metallic glass with the addition of rare earth elements. The results demonstrate that the metallic glasses are truly amorphous and not microcrystalline and that they are unusual in their formation because the alloys contain 90 at. % aluminum and there is no deep eutectic present in the phase diagram. Tensile strengths that exceed 900 MPa are obtained for several of the compositions and exceed 1000 MPa after partial crystallization.

"Electrowinning of copper by monopolar cells require common anode and cathode busbar and crossbars to connect each electrode to the respective common busbar. On the other hand, the bipolar configuration warrants the end electrodes only to be connected to busbars; there is substantial reduction in copper requirement. In the present work, an electrowinning cell with bipolar electrodes and end electrodes, each having an area of 1000 cm2 was designed and operated. The bipolar electrode is made of mixed metal oxide coated titanium mesh welded to plain titanium sheet. Coated titanium mesh acts as anode and the plain titanium sheet acts as cathode. Environmentally unacceptable lead anode and the recurring loss of lead are done away with. Closer spacing of the electrodes, paves way for the application of higher current density leading to mass transfer enhancement. Performance of bipolar copper electrowinning cell is reported.1. IntroductionThe normally adopted practice in electrowinning of copper is the conventional monopolar configuration. In this practice, the individual electrodes act either as anode or cathode. Hence there is a need to connect every one of the electrodes to the common anode or cathode busbar and crossbars running across the top of the cell are necessary. The common busbar carries very high current which is divided among the individual crossbars and hence has to be thicker in relation to the current load of the cell. The drawback of the need to use common busbars of thicker cross section and the need to have crossbars are obviated in the bipolar configuration."

This paper describes the performance of the copper industry over a period of some two decades and examines the theme that improvements in operating efficiency have not been matched by improved returns on capital. The financial performance of the copper industry is analysed using CRU&apos;s MICA database. Regression analysis indicates a two percentage point increase in operating margins but no increase in returns on capital. The gain in operating efficiency appears to have been mainly achieved in the mid 1980s. The investment boom of recent years has resulted in a rapid increase in the industry&apos;s level of debt and gearing ratio (now some 47%). Data on 44 copper mine projects is used to show the linear relationship between scale and capital costs. Typically new capacity costs some US$5,000 /tpy. The relationship between cash costs and capital intensity of projects is also plotted. The greater attention now being focused on efficient use of capital means that capital intensity rankings will become increasingly important in determining which projects go ahead.

Data acquisition is widely used for controlling flash smelting furnaces. A Romanian smelter from which a large amount of data can be collected uses such a technique. A computer program was developed for interpretation of the data. Inputs to the program are the process data files. Abnormal data are identified using standard statistical techniques; they can be edited if necessary. The following methods can be used for the analysis: linear correlation (single or multiple), polynomial correlation or comparison of two average values. Time variation graphs and histograms can be displayed. The random balance method was used for determination of significant parameters influencing the process performance. Not all process parameters are recorded, and some of them are not even measured. The software can compute some of these parameters such as: air flow rate required and the oxygen content of the gas: exiting the reaction tower. The software was used for the interpretation of a large amount of process data. The analysis showed that the process did not operate properly at some times.

Committed to a sustainable development of zinc applications, Union Miniere is investigating processes for the minimisation of waste and residues originating from the classic hydrometallurgical zinc process. In that context, Union Miniere has developed a method for the cold inertisation and solidification of goethite, the Graveliet® process. The result is a hard and inert gravel that can be used in the building industry. During the past two years, a pilot plant for the production of Graveliet® has been built and operated. In the present paper, the Graveliet® process and the pilot plant are described after which the properties of the produced gravel are discussed, from both a mechanical and an environmental point-of-view. Graveliet fulfils the criteria for use as a secondary building material. The GravelietJ process is a viable technology to avoid stockpiling of goethite residues and it thus assures the long-term development of the hydrometallurgical zinc process.

"Numerical simulations of macrosegregation formation during horizontal solidification of a hypoeutectic Sn-Pb alloy in a rectangular cavity is presented and compared to experimental results. The experiment involves a melting phase, a holding stage at constant temperature with/without application of electromagnetic stirring, and finally solidification. We simulate all stages of the experiment and study the segregation of Pb throughout the experiment. A twophase volume averaged model is used for the numerical simulations, accounting for thermosolutal convection and assuming perfect microscopic mixing (lever rule). The influence of the melting phase and the electromagnetic stirring is studied with different cases to illustrate the consequences on the flow pattern and Pb segregation. The numerical simulations are compared to the experimental data and the impact of chemical inhomogeneities prior to solidification on macrosegregation formation is discussed.IntroductionMany extensive investigations have been performed so far on the solidification of metallic alloys. However, the melting process of metallic alloy has not attracted attention in a same manner. Nevertheless, melting of alloy may put forth peculiar effects as described in the present paper. It has been observed from a benchmark experiment [1, 2] that significant stratification might arise during the melting process of Sn-Pb alloy. That effect was put forth thanks to the analysis of the experimental temperature distribution which indicated that the convective fluid flow was almost zero. The effect was enhanced when the lead composition was higher (above 6wt.%). The present paper is aimed at confirming that the melting of an alloy containing a heavier solute may be accompanied with a stratification of the solute which exerts a stabilizing effect on the convective fluid flow. Results obtained from numerical modeling are compared with experimental data obtained from the benchmark facility."

Electronic components have precious metals like Au and Ag. These metals have a high performance in electric conductance. The recycling of the scrap, however is too difficult because of the presence of other metals like Fe, Al, Zn, Sn, ceramics and plastics, all together in electronic components. The aim of the present work was to define one way for physical separation to have metallic non-ferrous concentrates. It was used three kinds of scrap. I was used conventional equipment for mineral processing like hammer mill; screens, electrostatic and magnetic separation.
