Indian blast furnaces operate with coke gener- ally containing 24 to 28% ash compared to 10-15% ash in coke in most other parts of the world. The operating problems are further aggravated by the high alumina content and the adverse alumina to silica ratio in the ore. The above factors not only increase the coke rate but, at the same time, increase the flush slag volume, make the bosh slag highly limey and thereby viscous, and produce a flush slag containing 24 to 26% alumina. Relative- ly low flame temperatures (RAFT) make conditions more difficult. The high basicity of the bosh slag limits the maximum flush slag basicity to around 1.0, beyond which the burden movement is adversely affected by the viscosity of the bosh slag: This effect is partly controlled by operating blast furnaces with high MgO in the flush slag (around.10%), which also improves the desulphurizing power of slag. Steps are underway in some plants to inject lime through theòtuyeres to control the bosh slag basicity and also to neutralise the large quantity of silica which is released at the tuyere level from the coke ash, so that the silicon content of the hot metal can also be controlled. High bosh slag basicity coupled with the characteristics of iron ore/aggolmerates, widens the softening-melting zone and alters the shape of the softening-melting zone. This leads to operat- ing difficulties and poor hot metal quality. This paper discusses the above aspects of Indian blast furnace operation and steps being taken to surmount some of the above difficulties.

"Due to the low iron grade and high sulfur content, pyrite cinder is difficult to be directly used for iron-making. In this paper, technology of magnetic roasting -grinding and magnetic separation -acid leaching was put forward for reclamation of pyrite cinder. For pyrite cinder of TFe53.51%, S2.20 %, studies showed that good magnetic effect can be achieved at roasting temperature 650~7000, reducing atmosphere CO/(CO + C02) 10~20% and roasting time 10~30 minutes. In separation conditions of grinding size -0.045mm accounting for 96.09% and magnetic field intensity of 1240 GS, iron concentrate of TFe64.81 %, S0.18% and iron recovery rate 91.44% was achieved. Acid leaching was studied to strengthen desulfurization. Results showed that high-quality iron ore concentrate of TFe66.3 l %, S0.10% was obtained under the conditions of hydrochloric acid mass fraction of 5%, pulp density of30%, leaching temperature of70? and leaching time of2 hours.IntroductionPyrite cinder is produced as a by-product of sulfuric acid industry [1] Domestic production is more than 12 million tons every year and occupied area is over 10 million square meters [2,3]. Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

I attended a funeral in West Monroe, Louisiana, for one of the best powder peddlers I’ve ever known. He started work in 1948 for Dixie Dynamite, a seismograph explosive distributor. His first job was as a truck driver, then magazine keeper and then sales re p re s e n t a t i v e . When Dixie Dynamite quit, he acted as an explosives sales agent for sometime before moving on to Kansas to be a sales rep for a distributor there. We called him the “ragin cajun” long before James Carville came on the national scene messing up things. While he was born in G e o rgia, he was a Cajun at heart. I don’t believe the old saying, “Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.” To me, the best products in the world need to be sold. Two examples of this are the Beta system for TV and the Apple Macintosh computers. Beta is the best system but VHS took over because the Beta people fell down on the selling job. Windows 98 is Macintosh ‘86 but again the engineers were not salesmen. Marion “Johnny” Johnson who was buried only about a half mile from his first magazine site proved that good selling is good citizenship. He could have sold any firstclass product, for he wouldn’t tolerate inferior items, and made a successful career of it, but he chose dynamite and the industry benefited from his talents.

Vibration transmitted to the upper limb by the chronic use of hand tools can result in cold-induced vasospasms finger blanching and cyanosis, similar to that seen with Raynaud’s phenomenon (4). These vasospasms, commonly referred to as vibration white finger (VWF), are in part the result of an increased sensitivity of peripheral arteries to the vasoconstricting effects of norepinephrine (e.g., (1-3)). However, alterations in vasodilating factors could also contribute to vasospasms. The goal of these studies was to determine if exposure to a single bout of vibration alters concentrations of the vasodilator, nitric oxide (NO), in a rat tail model of vibration. To determine if vibration exposure alters NO, we exposed animals to a single bout of vibration and measured concentrations of the synthetic enzymes, nitric oxide synthetase (NOS)-1 and NOS-3 in the ventral tail artery. We also directly assessed arterial concentrations of NO using a nitrate/nitrite assay. Methods General apparatus. Animals were placed in Broome-style restrainers, and their tail was secured to a vibrating or stable platform. Rats were exposed to a single 4 h bout of tail vibration (125 Hz, acceleration of 49 m/sec2 r.m.s.) or restraint control. Animals were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) and the ventral tail artery was dissected and frozen. Experiment 1: Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks old, n = 32) were used for all exposures. All animals were maintained in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee, and were in compliance with the CDC Regulations for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Animals were euthanized 1 or 24 h after the completion of the exposure. Western analyses were performed on total proteins (80 µg/lane) isolated from the C16-18 artery segments. Band densities were detected by chemiluminescence and quantified using Scion Image, and analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Nitrate/nitrite concentrations.. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained and exposed as described above. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure and the ventral artery was collected. Nitrate/nitrite concentrations were measured in ventral artery tissue homogenates using the nitrate/nitrite colormetric Assay Kit (Caymen). Results Analyses of band densities revealed that there was an effect of time (F(1, 17) = 6.03, p < 0.03) on NOS-1 protein in arteries exposed to vibration, with NOS levels being lower in arteries collected 24 h after the exposure than arteries collected 1 h after the exposure. Although NOS-1 proteins concentrations were slightly lower in control arteries collected 24 h after an exposure than arteries collected 1 h after exposure, post-hoc contrasts indicated they were not significantly different than 1 h controls. In contrast, NOS-1 band densities from arteries collected 24 h after the exposure were lower than those collected 1 h after the exposure (p < 0.01; Figure 1). NOS-3

Knowledge of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites is very important for the development of the concept of biomineralisation and the creation of a scientific base for new biocompatible materials for medical purposes. The present work is devoted to research results on various synthetic and biological carbonate apatites obtained at Saint Petersburg University over many years. All-important problems will be considered such as the location of CO32- ions in the apatite structure, the ionic substitutions in various biological apatites and the development of synthesis methods for their analogues. Syntheses of apatites were realised by precipitation methods and under hydrothermal conditions (from solid compounds and by calcite treatment). Biological samples used in this study were physiogenic and pathogenic apatites formed in the human organism, eg in teeth and in renal and salivary stones and dental calculi as well as apatites from fossils of different taxonomic families (brachiopods, conodonts, fishes, reptiles, mammal) with different geological ages and burial conditions. The study of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites has been carried out by powder (including high-temperature measurements) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, IR-spectroscopy, thermal analysis and various chemical analytical techniques.

A new assessment model has been proposed for metal production and its recycling system. The model consists of three processes, smelting of ore, cascading and upgrading of metal scrap. The present approach is to assess the total energy consumption of the system, by introducing two equations for describing the relationships between critical impurity content and the mass of production or scrap recycling. The total energy consumption in the system can be described as a function of recycling rate and performance of the upgrading process. The present model suggests that the impurity removal efficiency and yield in the upgrading process are essential to reduce the energy consumption in the systems. Especially, such points should be explicitly controlled in recycling of aluminum. The potential capability of this model was also discussed by obtaining several quantitative information required for the process design and the operational control of beneficial recycling of metals.

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Norinally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now heing used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present piche will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time. Lightweight Aggregates Used in the Northwest PUMICE Interest in Oregon pumice is not new. Deposits are abundant. Successful development, however, dates only from 1946. During 1948 a total of nine operations was engaged in full or part-time production of aggregate. The postwar building boom and increased public consciousness regarding the value of insulation are the immediate reasons behind the current development. Just how firmly this production of pumice aggregate may be established is something which cannot be foretold at the present time. Much will depend upon how successfully the pumice aggregate construction already installed stands the test of time. Some fine pumice aggregate products have been made and it seems probable that because of its unique properties a certain demand for pumice aggregate will continue in the future. Fire-proof, rodent-proof, decay-resistant properties supplement the lightness in weight and insulation properties of pumice aggregate products in rendering them particularly ideal for many types of construction. In addition there has been fabrication in the form of reinforced fence posts, street markers, and similar products of a specialized-product nature and these are not to be overlooked in terms of future production. Also pertinent to how soundlj pumice aggregate production is established will be possible future competition with other lightweight aggregates. However, this situation will be governed largely by competitive costs of production and marketing. For its present use, which is almost exclusively limited to the manufacturing of building blocks, the market for Oregon pumice aggregate has been extended from the mining area around Rend and Chemult to points as far distant as San Francisco and Seattle. Naturally enough the bulk of the production goes to the Portland and eastern Oregon consumers. Shipments are made by both rail and truck. Early in 1947 the State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries made a canvass of all pumice producers in the state. The production for 1956 amounted to 26,614 cu yd and was valued at $13,649 at the plants. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates the production for 1947 as 33,240 short tons valued at $111,380. This is roughly 65,000 cu yd. No data are available for the 1948 production but it is understood to exceed that for 1947. The Oregon pumice occurrences originated largely from the eruption of Mount Mazama, the name of the formerly active volcano and the location of Crater Lake. Other lesser volcanoes throughout the area contributed to the present occurrences, however, and it has been estimated by Moore&apos; that the pumice deposits cover an area of some 3500 square miles. This area lies east of Crater Lake between Bend and Klamath Falls and embraces the southern portion of Deschutes County, the northern part of Klamath County, and the northwest corner of Lake County. Thickness of the pumice ranges from thin skims to local thicknesses of as much as 30 to 40 ft. Fragment size also varies greatly. Any attempt to describe the situation by giving screen analyses would be confusing because of the wide variations to be found in all area of this size. The picture can best be summed up by stating that places showing great variations in fragment size can be found if a search for extremes is made. For mining purposes in connection with aggregate production, it call be stated that miles and miles of pumice exist in which the fragrnent sizes range from an inch or so downward. The usual color of the pumice is a light gray to off-white. A typical pumice analysis shows a silica content of about 69 pct, alumina 15 pct, and sodium oxide about 5 pct. Potash, lime, and water are the next three most abundant constituents, running just a little over 2 pct each. Iron oxides are fairly constant at 2.75 pct. Titanium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus occur in amounts of less than 1 pct. All of the foregoing substances are combined as a glass exhibiting cellular structure. The weight of crushed but otherwise pit-run (undried) pumice runs around 1100 Ib per cu yd according to figures furnished by various producers. This paper presents a case history on mitigating vibration problems associated with the installation of steel sheetpiles. The project in-cludes installation of steel sheetpiles for a utility trench within 40 feet (12.2 meters) of a very sensitive manufacturing facility. Numerous production line quality control instruments and manufacturing processes within the manufacturing facility are extremely sensitive to vibrations. To minimize the impact to the owner, we specified that the contractor perform a vibration study using different types of pile hammers. The results and conclusions of the vibration study are presented in this paper.

The primary purpose of the Bergius (hydrogenation of coal) and Fischer-Tropsch (hydrogenation of carbon monoxide) processes is the production of synthetic liquid fuels. This objective is of importance in insuring an adequate supply of motor fuels and lubricating oils in the United States. In the urgency of the basic research and process development work on synthetic liquid fuels, the possibilities for the production of synthetic chemicals inherent in these processes have hitherto received little attention in this country. However, the by-products, as well as the primary products, from the Bergius and Fischer-Tropsch processes are rich source materials for organic chemicals. The overhead oil from liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal, for example, contains benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, aromatic solvents, about 20 percent tar acids (largely phenol, cresols, and xylenols), and 3 percent nitrogen bases. Wax, alcohols, and acids are by--products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In addition, techniques have been developed which make possible the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, aldehydes, and other oxygenated organic compounds. These chemicals are more valuable on a unit basis than gasoline. Because of continued rapid expansion of the plastic, resin, lacquer, and solvent industries, larger amounts of many of these chemicals will be needed in the near future.

A CBMM vem desenvolvendo um projeto com a equipe da Unicamp que compete na Fórmula SAE como um meio de difundir o conceito da aplicação dos aços microligados para aqueles que serão a próxima geração da tecnologia automotiva. O projeto foi iniciado em 2011 e praticamente todas as peças do protótipo foram trocadas de aço AISI A36 para vários tipos de aços microligados com limite de escoamento superiores a 700MPa. Esse trabalho apresenta exemplos de componentes onde as reduções em massa atingiram até 32%.

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations. &nbsp; Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

The integrity of mine structures, such as the roofs, ribs, face and supporting pillars, is difficult to assess beyond the exposed surface. To mitigate potential rockfall hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is assessing the usefulness of Rayleigh wave dispersion analysis to detect damage and stress-relieved zones in mine structures. Classical surface wave dispersion modeling is utilized at both laboratory and field scales in damaged and undamaged material to assess the integrity of a mine pillar and roof. To more fully exploit Rayleigh wave propagation characteristics, derivation of a novel dispersion parameter was conducted using a convolutional model. The development of a suitable Rayleigh wave dispersion system based on insight derived from forward modeling is presented. The application of inverse modeling for damage and stress assessment in the mine environment is also discussed.

Optimal drill and blast design is a process often neglected by many underground hard rock mines. This is even more important to the new mine where ring designs need to be implemented and refined in a short period of time. In today&apos;s environment where more and more mining is being carried out by contract specialists it is the co-operation between a principal and contractor, who are working towards a common goal, that achieves the highest quality end result. The development of drill and blast designs that cause minimal damage to the mine infrastructure is particularly important to Northparke&apos;s E26 Block Cave Mine, as it consists of a single extraction level which must survive intact for the life of the mine. The advanced undercut mining method implemented at Northparkes is fired in a sequence which protects the mine development from potentially damaging abutment stress. This paper details how blast designs will be optimised and sequenced to satisfy the conflicting objectives of maximum rock breakage inside the drill pattern and minimum rock damage outside the pattern.

This brief discusses the installation and application of sleeved piles of two different types for two different projects, the W, Seattle to Harbor Island Swing Bridge Project and the Seattle Access Project. A description of these relatively novel piling systems is given, as well as some notes on their installation and application. As implied by the term "sleeved" these are piles which consist of two piles, an inner pile combined with an outer concentric sleeve pile. Background, Swing Bridge The Swing Bridge project is virtually unique in the world in that it is a "lift and turn" swing bridge. It is also a concrete, cast -in-place segmental bridge which is designed to be moveable.
