At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

The U.S. economy and, consequently, the demand for minerals grew at more moderate rates in 1995 compared with stronger performances the previous year. Demand for metals such as steel and copper was relatively stable. For example, the decline in steel consumed in motor vehicle manufacturing (reflecting lower vehicle sales) for the first half of 1995 was offset by an increase in steel consumed in construction during the same period. More detailed information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector Is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance The value of processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10% compared with 1994. The estimated value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1995 was $38 billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35 years.

Steel slag is an inevitable by-product from a steelmaking furnace such as a converter, an open-hearth furnace or an electric arc furnace. The yield of steel slag increases with the sharp rise of steel production. Utilizing the slag effectively and comprehensively is one of the important tasks to promote the development of iron and steel industry in China in a sustainable and efficient way. In this study, hot-poured steel slag from a converter was used to prepare ceramics by mixing with fly ash, microsilica, and quartz. After heating at 1100–1200 °C, the ceramics were well sintered. XRD revealed that multiple crystalline phases coexisted in the glass-ceramics, and the main crystalline phases were diopside and anorthite. SEM observation indicated that there was a plate-columnar composite structure in the ceramics. Reaction mechanisms were discussed.

Gasoline and other liquid fuels may be obtained from coal by direct and indirect hydrogenation.3/ The direct process, usually termed the coal-hydro-genation or the Bergius process, was patented in Germany by F. Bergius in 1914 and developed to a commercial stage by the inventor and I. G. Farben-industrie. From a chemical point of view, the coal-hydrogenation process consists of adding hydrogen to the complex coal molecules and removing oxygen so that its chemical constitution is changed to that of petroleum, whereupon the coal substance liquefies, yielding an aromatic crude oil. In the indirect-hydrogenation process, known as the Fischer-Tropsch process (invented by Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch in Germany), coal, lignite, or natural gas is first converted to water gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This mixture of gases, in proper proportion and after suitable purification, is then passed over a solid catalyst at relatively low pressures (1 to 20 atmospheres) and temperatures ranging from 180° to 260° C. The products obtained are gasoline, Diesel oil, liquefiable gases, and paraffin wax.

The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. This study helps to reconcile the long-term debate on the timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of gold mineralisation in the Xiong’ershan and other districts along the southern margin of the NCC.CITATION:Li, J-W and Tang, K F, 2015. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

O presente trabalho desenvolveu uma solução, utilizando Hadoop e Map Reduce for C (MR4C), capaz de paralelizar a segmentação de fissuras em imagens de partículas minerais. Um conjunto de 221 imagens de tamanhos distintos de partículas de minério de cobre obtidas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura foi utilizado para os testes. A variação do número de nós de processamento apresentou um ganho do tempo de execução que escalou de forma quase que linear. O balanceamento de carga estática promoveu um speedup de 1,3. A solução proposta, quando comparada à implementação sequencial, considerando um cluster com 9 nós de processamento, atingiu um speedup de 19,1.

Aços multiconstituídos têm aplicações voltadas principalmente para o setor automobilístico. Isso porque esses apresentam uma boa combinação de elevada resistência, ductilidade e tenacidade. A elevada resistência desses aços é devida a martensita e aos finos feixes de ferrita bainítica, enquanto que a tenacidade e a ductilidade são atribuídas aos filmes finos de austenita retida presentes entre os feixes. Esses filmes contém uma maior concentração de carbono em relação aos blocos de austenita retida. Uma consequência é que estes se tornam mais estáveis mecanicamente e termicamente. Dessa forma, foi realizada a avaliação do desempenho mecânico de um aço tratado isotermicamente abaixo de Mi e revenidos a 400°C/1 h. Os resultados dos ensaios de impacto mostraram que quanto maior a fração volumétrica da austenita retida maior é a energia absorvida, independente da morfologia desse constituinte.

Accidental explosions in coal mines are due to various causes, but many of them can be directly attributed to coal dust; others that probably in no way depend on dust as a primary cause are propagated, greatly intensified, and made more disastrous by the presence of coal dust. The fact that coal dust in a bituminous mine will explode as a result of a fire-damp explosion has been generally accepted for many years, but the belief has also been held by many that coal dust is not in itself dangerous when unmixed with an explosive gas. Therefore, in past years little attention was given to dust in mines free from fire damp, and many disastrous explosions have resulted from lack of knowledge of the danger from coal dust. In the explosives gallery and experimental mine of the Bureau of Mines experiment station, Pittsburgh, Pa., it has been proved repeatedly and conclusively that coal dust will explode violently when no inflammable gas is present. PROPAGATION OF DUST EXPLOSIONS A coal-dust explosion is an extremely rapid burning or combustion of the coal particles. Their burning consists essentially of the combination of the hydrocarbons in the coal with the oxygen of the air, a process that generates heat and flame and produces hot gases and water vapor. These gases and vapors have a volume many times that of the original coal particles; thus they exert an outward motion and pressure which constitute the explosive wave. When fine particles of coal are suspended in the air, each particle is surrounded by the oxygen of the air, and thus is well placed to oxidize or burn rapidly whenever the temperature is high enough. If some particles are ignited from any cause they will fire others, and the combustion will extend from particle to particle with extreme rapidity wherever enough coal dust of sufficient purity is present.

Nature has furnished us with fuel in three forms, solid, liquid, and gaseous; solid, the most common; liquid, containing the greatest energy; gaseous, the most convenient for use. The tendency of the day is to the conversion of solid and liquid fuel into the gaseous form. There is magic in the word gas to many men who through ignorance or indifference imagine that by mere conversion into gas an immense quantity of energy can he added to fuel of other forms, forgetful of the law of nature, that. the conversion of any substance from one form to another involves a loss of effective energy, and therefore that if in certain cases more duty can be obtained out of the gas resulting from a given amount of coal than the coal itself will supply when used direct, the cause lies solely in the more efficient utilization of the fuel in its gaseous state. Nevertheless, new processes for making gas are constantly crowded upon our notice with claims of less cost for manufacture and delivery than natural gas, and often of far more energy for the product than is contained in the coal or oil from which it is made. I was recently asked to examine a new process of this kind. From an analysis shown me the calorific energy of the gas approximated 375 heat-units per cubic foot; on ascertaining the quantity of gas claimed to be made from a given amount of solid and liquid fuel, it appeared, that for every 325 heat-units contained in the latter 900 heat-units were alleged to he delivered into the gas, or nearly three times as much energy as the original fuel really held. The extravagant claim of some oil-gas advocates is still frequently heard, that by vaporizing oil with steam and then passing the mixture through a coil of hot iron pipe, an oil-water-gas containing 26,600 heat-units is formed from 1 pound of oil carrying originally 21,000 heat-units, while the only energy expended on the gas has been by the introduction of a -little steam and a little extraneous heat. "A novel oxygen production technology noted chemical looping air separation (CLAS) was introduced and properties of Cu-based oxygen carriers used were investigated. The oxygen carriers were prepared by mechanical mixing. Al2O3, Fe2O3, ZrO2, TiO2 and SiO2 were used as binders during the preparation. XRD patterns show that spine! oxides are formed using Al2O3 and Fe2O3 as binders. Phases of CuO and binders keep stable using ZrO2, TiO2 and SiO2 as binders. BET values of oxygen carriers increase in the order of ZrO2>TiO2>SiO2>Fe2O3>Al2O3. The effects of temperatures, binders, particle sizes and flow rates on reduction/oxidation reaction rates were studied in TG experiments. The reduction reaction rate increases in the order of ZrO2>TiO2>SiO2. The effect of binders on the reactivity of oxidation is not obvious. The reduction and oxidation reaction rates both have the tendencies of increasing with the temperature increasing and with gas flow decreasing. However, the effects of gas flow and particle size are little.IntroductionChemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a novel oxygen production technology. The oxygen carriers used in CLAS release oxygen in reduction reactor and regenerate in the oxidation reactor. Selecting suitable oxygen carriers is the key for CLAS. Oxides of CuO, Mn2O3, Co3O4, Pb3O4, CrO2, SrO2, PdO2 and CeO2 have the property of releasing oxygen at suitable temperature and oxygen partial pressure [1]. Among these oxides, CuO, Mn2O3, Co3O4 are the most common compositions used to prepared oxygen carriers for chemical looping combustion (CLC) or chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) [2-5]. Moreover, thermodynamic calculations and preliminary experiments were carried out on oxides of Cu (CuO/Cu2O), Mn (Mn2O3/Mn3O4) and Co (Co3OJCoO) by Moghtaderi to ascertain their feasibility for CLAS process [6]. CuO has the highest oxygen transport capacity (0.1 g 02/g CuO compared to 0.03 g 02/g Mn2O3 and 0.06 g 02/g Co3O4). However, agglomeration is the biggest issue for copper oxides used at high temperature because of its low melting point (l 450°C for CuO, 1235°C for Cu2O and 1075°C for the mixture of CuO and Cu2O) [7]. In order to improve the capability of anti-sintering and stability ofCuO, binders (ZrO2, MgAl2O4, TiO2, SiO2, Fe2O3, Al2O3, cement) are added during the preparation of Cu-based oxygen carriers [8]. In this paper, the Cu-based oxygen carriers were prepared by mechanical mixing method. TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, ZrO2 and SiO2 were selected as binder. XRD, BET and SEM were used to analyze the phase, surface area and surface morphology of oxygen carrier prepared. The reactivity of oxygen reduction and oxidation of oxygen carriers prepared were investigated in STA409PC thermal analyzer."

The low-grade nickel laterite ore used in this study was successfully upgraded through selective reduction by industrialized rotary kilns followed by magnetic separation. The results indicated that both iron metallization extent and nickel metallization extent showed obvious linear correlation. In addition, rational roasting temperature and prolonged grinding time could enhance the overall fineness level of reduced laterite nickel ore. The moderate roasting temperature at a range of 1100–1150 °C should be suitable enough to a conversion of total nickel to metallic nickel and partly inhibited the conversion of total iron. Ultimately, the obtained ferronickel alloy with a nickel content of 7.32% and an iron content of 84.15% was prepared successfully from the lowgrade nickel laterite ore containing a nickel content of 1.92%. Nickel and iron recoveries were 96.72 and 89.08% respectively, which achieved the highly efficient recovery and utilization of iron and nickel from low-grade laterite nickel ore

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.

The Korean crisis and the cessation of Russian manganese-ore shipments to the United States in 1950 reemphasized the almost total dependence of the domestic steel industry on foreign supplies for metallurgical-grade manganese ore. In this emergency, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to undertake experimental mine and process development work on the known large reserves of low-grade manganese ore in the Artillery Mountains region in Mohave County, Ariz. The objective of the work was to obtain the basic mining and metallurgical data needed to make specific plans for initiating exploitation of the deposits within 3 years if high-grade foreign ore could not be obtained during the emergency. The manganese deposits of the Artillery Mountains region are in an area of about 25 square miles on the north side of the Bill Williams River in southern Mohave County. Lasky, of the Federal Geological Survey, has estimated reserves at 175 million tons of manganiferous material assaying 3.5 to 4 percent Mn. Although the man¬ganese occurs in various Tertiary and Quaternary formations as both bedded and fissure vein deposits, the more important syngenetic deposits are found in upper and lower manganiferous zones in the sedimentary beds of playa and alluvial fan origin that constitute the Chapin Wash formation.

The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. The Early Mesoproterozoic (1.6–1.4 Ga) crustal basement of the Cathaysia Block in South China is the ore source bed for the world-famous Nanling W–Sn polymetallic mineralisation.CITATION:Li, H, 2015. A flowsheet is being developed for processing Thompson ultramafic low-grade nickel ores. This type of ore is characterized by high content of serpentinized magnesium silicates which generate slimes during comminution. Flotation of this type of ore proves difficult due to problems associated with the slimes. The flowsheet, based on extensive laboratory and miniplant flotation tests, consists of two key components: desliming by hydrocyclones prior to flotation and using soda ash for pH control in flotation. Satisfactory metallurgical results have consistently been achieved in laboratory full circuit simulation and miniplant tests.

Fundamental changes in the Bitumen Production process at Syncrude have led to the integration of Mining and Extraction operations. Successful operation of the integrated process requires the coordinated effort of several business units. Hence, decision-making has become increasingly more complex and better tools are required. IO2 is a collaborative effort to develop a proof-of-concept prototype of a distributed decision-support system for integrated short-term production and maintenance planning with fleet allocation and dispatching. The prototype includes three main modules (planning, dispatch, and maintenance), a shared database, and a simulation module. At this stage, this prototype is used to plan and operate a simulated mining operation. It is used to demonstrate the viability of the chosen systems architecture and algorithms, as well as the information flows and interactions necessary for improving the overall performance of the integrated operation. While the problem is demonstrated using Syncrude?s site, the methodology is applicable to most integrated resource allocation problems.

The force exerted by unbroken surface waves on a cylindrical object, such as a pile, which extends from the bottom upward above the wave crest, is made up of two components, namely: 1. A drag force proportional to the square of the velocity which may be represented by a drag coefficient having substantially the same value as for steady flow, and 2. A virtual mass force proportional to the horizontal component of the accelerative force exerted on the mass of water displaced by the pile. These relationships follow directly from wave theory and have been confirmed by measurements in the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. The maximum force exerted by breakers or incipient breakers is impulsive in nature, reaching a value much greater than that produced by unbroken waves but enduring for only a short time interval. This impulsive force represents the ultimate development of the accelerative force and is produced by the steep wave front and large horizontal acceleration at the front of a breaker. This impulsive force greatly exceed. the drag force computed from the particle velocities of the breaker. The reader is cautioned that these preliminary results are applicable only to single piles without bracing and are likely to be modified somewhat where multiple piles are driven, one within the influence of the other or where multiple piles are connected by submerged bracing. This paper is essentially a preliminary report submitted at this time because of the current importance of wave forces in the design of offshore structures. An extended series of additional experiments is planned for the near future. This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS&apos;s). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS&apos;s have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS&apos;s at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS&apos;s are also described.
