"A central composite experimental design was used to determine empirical relationships between the operating variables of a ball mill and the characteristics of the ground products. The independent variables selected for the study were the work index and size distribution of the feed material, the feed rate and the pulp density. The measured responses included product size distribution, product surface area, viscosity of pulp discharge, weight of dry solids in mill, mill time constant and emitted sonic vibrations. The ball mill was operated continuously in open circuit during each experimental run.Multivariable regression techniques were used to derive linear empirical models from the experimental results. Of the four factors studied, the grindability of the feed material significantly affected every measured response. The size distribution of the ground product was affected significantly by the feed rate and the size distribution of the feed, but not by the pulp• density. Feed throughput capacity and pulp density were significant to the viscosity of the pulp discharge, the weight of solids in the mill and the mill time constant. Significant first-and second-order models are given for the above relationships. The relation-ships between the characteristics of the sonic vibrations of the operating mill and the various dependent variables have not as yet been established."

Prior research has suggested that the source of respirable silica dust in underground coal mines is typically the immediate top or bottom lithology adjacent to the mined seam, not mineral matter bound within the mined coal bed. Geochemical analyses were applied in an effort to identify the specific source rock of respirable quartz dust in coal mines. The analyses also demonstrate the compositional changes that take place in the generation of the respirable dust fraction from parent rock material. All six mine sites were mining coal with relatively low mineral matter content, although two mines were operating in the Fire Clay coal bed which contains a persistent tonstein. Interpretations of Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, and K concentrations strongly suggest that the top strata above the mined seam is the primary source of mineral dust produced during mining. One site indicates a mixed or bottom source, possibly due to site specific conditions. Respirable dust compositional analyses suggest a direct relationship between the quantity of mineral Si and the quantity of quartz Si. A similar relationship was not found in either the top or bottom rocks adjacent to the mined seam. An apparent loss of elemental Al was noted in the respirable dust fraction when compared to potential parent rock sources. Elemental Al is present in top and bottom rock strata within illite, kaolinite, feldspar, and chlorite. A possible explanation for loss of Al in the respirable dust samples is the removal of clays and possibly chlorite minerals. It is expected that removal of this portion of the Al bearing mineral matter occurs during rock abrasion and dust transport prior to dust capture on the samplers.

The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale cyclic tests to determine the composition of recycled leach liquor in the Bureau?s proposed clay/HCl leach/ HCl sparge process for producing Al203 from clay. The data developed from these tests make it possible to synthesize leach liquors for predetermined steady-state operating conditions when conducting large-scale crystallization tests. The results of two sparge tests were compared. One was a 20-cycle test with a 36-pct-HCl concentration in the mother liquor; the other was a 10-cycle test with a 26-pct-HCl concentration in the mother liquor. The effect of impurity concentrations in the leach liquor on the purity of aluminum chloride (AlCl30?6H20) crystals was determined, but there was poor correlation between this data and results that have been obtained from miniplant-scale work.

El presente texto describe la forma de realizar la extracción y recuperación de cobre y zinc a través del empleo del hipoclorito como agente oxidante y del amoniaco como agente acomplejante de los cationes metálicos. Entre las ventajas de su utilización respecto a la lixiviación tenemos: que las soluciones obtenidas son más limpias y los interferentes como el hierro, manganeso y aluminio se precipitan como óxidos hidratados en este medio, facilitando los procesos posteriores de recuperación de metales. Asímismo, se evita la etapa de extracción por solventes, obteniéndose de ese modo un precipitado metálico o de electrodeposición directa desde las soluciones de lixiviación final. En ese sentido, la extracción y recuperación a partir de minerales complejos con altos contenidos de carbonatos mezclados íntimamente con sulfuros secundarios en condiciones normales es la alternativa técnica económica viable.

The design and field testing of a seismic miner detection and location system arc described. This work was carried out over a period of three years. The first two and one-half years were sponsored by Continental Oil Company, while the last period of tests were done as the first part of a one-year contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Laboratory and field experimentation in three different nines under simulated emergency conditions have led to three important results: (1) Taps on roof bolts with normally available objects can usually be detected up to horizontal distances of 1,000 ft. (2) The origin of the tans can be located by on-site processing with a small computer. (3) Some predetermination of the approximate location is necessary for a quick and successful rescue. This report also includes preliminary specifications an,d cost guidelines for construction of a transportable field system capable of matching the performance characteristics of the one used during the field tests.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

APPROXIMATELY 26 percent of the total ore production to date from the largest single deposit of copper-bearing material in the world was mined during the war years, 1942 to 1945, at Chile Exporation Company's great open-pit mine at Chuquicamata, Chile. About 18 percent of the total waste removed during the life of the mine was handled in the same period. The total of ore and waste represents approximately 24 percent of the total material that has been excavated from the pit. This is more than was removed in the first fourteen years of operation from 1914 through 1927. The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a full-scale model of a 15-ft-wide coal mine entry to use in combination with finite-element analyses to investigate roof support systems and various types of roof bolts. The objective was to enhance understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the interaction between rock and supports and the relative integrity of bolted mine roof as a function of roof bolt type, length, spacing, and tension, and the basic characteristics of the roof strata. The laboratory test results, when correlated with computer simulations using fmite-element analysis and underground verification tests, should provide a basis for desigillng safer, more cost-effective roof control systems and help to establish guidelines for employing fully grouted resin and mechanically anchored bolting systems. The background for this research, the research approach, the methods and equipment employed, and the results are described in this report.

Two Hg-Au occurrences west of Bangko, Sumatra occur within the West Sumatra Permian Volcanic Plutonic Arc. The Melipun Hg-Au occurrence was exploited in the past and mineralisation occurs within a hydrothermally altered cupola of a buried intrusion. The Salak Hg-Au occurrence occurs within the outcrop of the Dusunbaru pluton, likely within the remnants of a caldera in which hydrothermal mineralisation was developed. Both occurrences formed late in the history of the volcanic arc, probably between the Triassic and early Jurassic. "Deteriorating ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the unit capacity of SAG mills. Pebble circuits have been added to the existing SAG circuits to increase their unit capacity. To make the pebble circuits justifiable, the grate openings are increased almost to 4.5 inches to draw large quantity of pebbles. The inherent transportation problems associated with SAG mills in closed circuit with pebble fraction are more complicated than the single stage SAG mill operation, because the coarse pebbles behave significantly different to that of slurry in pulp lifters. In addition, operation of mills at higher speed, to take advantage of precise design of high release angled shell lifters significantly reduces the discharge efficiency of the conventional pulp dischargers. The presence of a sizable quantity of pebbles in the pulp lifter limits the space available and reduces the flow gradient through the grate thus increases the load inside the mill and hence the mill power-draw. This paper analyses all the problems associated in discharge of slurry and pebbles in SAG mills with pebble circuits. The Outokumpu patented Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) aims at eliminating the inherent material transport problems to ensure good grinding conditions. Recent installation of TPLTM in a 26-ft SAG mill has proven these claims by reducing the specific power consumption while increasing the mill capacity.INTRODUCTIONThe conventional wisdom is to look at the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill as just another grinding mill in which ball charge, mill filling, and mill speed are varied to attain maximum throughput. Liner design for the SAG was also approached more from a wear perspective rather than a metallurgical and hydraulic-flow perspective. The extensive research work carried out by Latchireddi and Morrell (1997,2003a and 2003b) has demonstrated to think of the SAG as more of a pump in which the grates and pulp discharger end (“impeller”) were designed to efficiently discharge the product sized particles smaller than the grate size with minimal recirculation out of the mill.The rock load in the mill is essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles. The discharge rate of the product material depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) is operating. Similar to the impeller design affecting the pump capacity, the pulp lifter design affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of the SAG/AG grinding mills. The general arrangement of AG/SAG mills discharge system is shown in Figure 1."

The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

This report contains the results of an investigation into the feasibility of periodically measuring parameters of the insulation for a mine electrical power system in order to detect incipient faults. The variety of insulation parameters evaluated included insulation resistance, dissipation factor, power factor (vs. applied voltage), current harmonics, leakage current, infrared radiation, as well as certain circuit breaker parameters and tests. In order to augment field tests a program of accelerated life testing was also carried out. Apparent inconsistencies in data were identified as the result of environmental effects, primarily temperature and relative humidity. A series of environmental tests were conducted to develop correction factors that allow one to refer measured parameters to standard conditions. A portable data collector was develop-ed to aid in the accurate collection and analysis of laboratory and field data. The primary conclusion is that insulation deterioration can be measured and failure predicted with reasonable confidence. The secondary conclusion is that most of the tests are impractical in the field although useful in the laboratory. Infrared sensing, insulation resistance and dissipation factor are the best insulation field tests when portability is taken into account.

This paper is one of a series dealing with the mining and crushing methods and costs of the nonmetallic industries, prepared under the sponsorship of and in cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines,. The quarrying methods described in this paper are those used at the Monocacy trap rock quarry which annually produces from 450,000 to 500,000 tons of crushed stone. This property is located 3 miles east of Birdsboro at Monacacy, Pa., and is one of the three quarries operated by the John T. Dyer Quarry Co. Throughout the paper an effort is made to explain the various methods used and the cost of operation.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to recover strategic and critical metals such as Ni, Co, and Cr from mixed contaminated super-alloy scrap. One approach being studied involves melt refining of superalloy scrap to produce anodes for electrolytic deposition of Ni-Co alloy. This melt refining of superalloy turnings is described based on melt-oxidation and oxidation-carburization experiments, using roasted superalloy grinding sludge to supply the 0 needed to oxidize Cr and other readily oxidized elements to the slag. Controlled melt-carburization subsequent to oxidation improved the metal phase recovery of Ni and Co to well over 90 pct and decreased electrolytic solubility of Cr, Mo, and W by carbide formation. Electrolytic refining experiments were conducted using a controlled-potential mode (preset cathode potential). Data show effects of Fe and Cr impurities, cation concentration, electrolyte pH, S04-Cl electrolyte ratio, temperature, cathode potential, and cation-selective membrane use on current efficiency, current density, and deposit composition. Disposition of Ni, Co, Cr, MO, W, and Fe is compared for melt-oxidized versus oxidized-plus-carburized anodes. Deposits containing >97 pct Ni + Co (major impurity Fe) have been routinely obtained from scrap anodes. Research is continuing to improve deposit quality in sustained deposition and to recover Cr and other metals from refining slags and anode sludges.

MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

The uranium mine environment is characterized by airborne radon-222 and its daughter products to which miners are exposed through breathing and by gamma and X rays from the uranium-235 and uranium 238 chains to which the miners are exposed externally. The nature of the radon-daughter concentrations and the methods used to define and measure the exposures are explained through an extensive review of the literature. An improved passive track-etch dosimeter for personal use is proposed which has a measurement range of about 30-400 WLH with a 95% confidence interval to ~25% for individual detector measurements in relatively stable mine air. Some measurements of these dosimeters adapted to environmental use are also presented. A program of development for enhancement of dosimeter sensitivity and greater accuracy of measurement is outlined. Extensive gamma-ray survey measurements were made in two Colorado and three New Mexico mines. Follow-up personal miner dosimetry with LiF TLDs was done at the mine with the highest exposure rates, The average miner exposure rate measured was 4.27 mR per day, or 9.3 of the maximum permissible level averaged over 13 weeks. Comparisons are made with previous mine surveys and their value in estimating miner exposure is discussed. Some depth-dose measurements made using Lucite as the absorber are evaluated.

If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

Newly published models suggest that some orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits formed by the remobilisation of trace elements during interaction with hydrothermal or metamorphic fluids from early sedimentary pyrite that was enriched in Au, As and Te. The released trace elements are transported by the fluids to favourable trap sites where they are deposited. Therefore, early enrichment of Au, As and Te in source rocks (particularly in pyritic black shale) can be crucial to the formation of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.The most important cause of the enrichment of gold and other trace elements in the sedimentary basins has been examined in this study to determine which basins are the most prospective for the development of orogenic gold deposits. An important influence for Au and other associated trace element accumulation in sedimentary pyrite is the temporal variation of trace element content in the oceans, as revealed by a database of over 1400 analyses of pyrite from black shale through geologic time. It is inferred that sediments coeval with those where sedimentary pyrite is enriched in Au and associated trace elements are more likely to be source rocks of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.Factor analysis of the trace element content of pyrite through geologic time was conducted to investigate the multivariate relationships amongst trace elements and how these chemical factors explain the uptake of trace elements. One important factor includes Te, Au, Pb and Bi content. The incorporation of these large cations into pyrite is enhanced by As3+ substituting for Fe in pyrite lattice. The As3+ ion occurs in relatively oxidised environments and, thus, it is expected that shales deposited in non-euxinic waters are better source rocks for orogenic gold deposits.The examination of both the time in which the sediments were deposited and the redox conditions of the basin, and the ocean more broadly, can be used as a guide to approximate the extent of a basin’s fertility. This paper summarizes explosives transportation incident and accident data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from 1993 to 1998. The paper briefly describes the legislation and regulations that cover hazardous materials transportation. The multimodal incident data collected by the Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) contained 86 incidents involving Class 1 materials during transit. Thirty-two occurred on public highways. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data showed there were 8 1 motor-vehicle accidents involving explosives. The FHWA Crash datafile extract contained 649 records categorized as involving Class 1 materials although closer analysis revealed that nearly 90% of these did not involve explosives. In both databases, there were no fatalities caused by the explosive materials although 7 fatalities were the result of injuries suffered during the motorvehicle accident. There were also no serious explosions during any of these incidents or accidents. The paper concludes with an analysis of the risk involved with transportation of commercial Class 1 materials on the highway.
