"Two composite samples of a gold-bearing ore from North Western Quebec (Barry Township) were tested to assess their grindability, recovery by flotation and Knelson concentrator as well as extraction using cyanidation.Work index values (BWi) for two composites were found to be 10.4 and 11.0 kWh/tonne, respectively. Flotation tests involved feed samples for which the particle size ranged from a P80 value of 205 ?m to 53 ?m, which resulted in gold recoveries of 91.8% to 95.8% (at gold grades of 130 to 140 g/tonne). Cyanidation tests indicated gold extraction levels ranging from 94.2 to 97.5%. Higher, recoveries were obtained at finer grind sizes and higher cyanide strengths. However, the grind size had a bigger impact on gold leaching. Gold grade and recoveries obtained with the Knelson concentrator device were lower than those obtained by flotation. Mass recoveries to concentrate products strongly depended on the fluidization pressure used. High gold recoveries can be obtained generally at low water pressures of 3 to 4 psi. Higher water pressures produced more selectivity at the expense of higher gold losses.It can be concluded that the gold ore samples tested have good characteristics due to moderate levels of energy requirement, high gold recoveries and extraction rates attainable.INTRODUCTIONBench scale testing of ore samples is an important step in the long series of metallurgical and economic studies involved in bringing new ore bodies into production (Coleman, 1980). Through a laboratory testing program, the behaviour of an ore in a particular process on a larger scale can be established. In an exploratory manner, this testing can be helpful for classification of ores in terms of “good ore” or “problematic ore” by providing preliminary information on recoverability of target minerals. Potential problems if any can be assessed by further investigation of products (e.g., middlings) obtained as a result of testing. A detailed bench scale experimental program in the metallurgical laboratory can also provide the background work for flowsheet development. Depending on the simplicity or complexity of the ore to be tested and type of details required from a testing program, the amount of samples required in the mineral processing laboratory can vary from several kg to more than one hundred kg depending on how detailed the metallurgical testing program is."

"The worldwide demand of ores and the depletion of the high-purity deposits make it necessary to recover ores in increasingly finer size fractions in the feed material. The flotation technology of more than 40 years old plants was not able to recover the ultra fine material. Those slurry tailings ponds now have the chance to be re-processed with PNEUFLOT® technology.The bubble sizes of different flotation technologies have a huge influence of the results especially regarding the recovery of the ultra fine particle sizes.PNEUFLOT® technology of HUMBOLDT WEDAG Coal & Minerals Technology GmbH in Germany was applied to ultra fine Phosphate, Copper and Platinum ores. The results will be presented in this paper.Conventional technology like agitator flotation has its limits in the flotation of fines due to turbulences in the cell. The position of the agitator influences the recovery of the fines. A deep impeller generates a higher froth zone. This helps to catch the medium fines. Due to the static head of the slurry inside the cell, compressed air is required for such cell designs.Column flotation is well known for a good selectivity without having in the first cell a good recovery. This leads to invest in several cleaning stages to reach an acceptable recovery. Further more, compressed air is required to generate the air bubbles to the flotation process, which are much bigger than with PNEUFLOT® technology applied.INTRODUCTIONHigh metal prices are actually the basis to invest in poor deposits or deposits with very fine intergrown ores which have to be milled down to ultra fine powders less than 60 micron. The liberation grade has to be determined by a mineralogical analysis. Polish sections have to be prepared and interpreted by using of a microscope. Figure 1 and figure 2 are showing polish sections of a platinum-nickel ore from Petchenga Nickel at Zapolyarni Mine in Russia. The head grades for rich ore are for copper between 0.05 – 0.15%, for nickel between 3 – 7% and for platinum group minerals approx. 0.15 oz/t. With an efficient flotation technology it can be upgraded to 20 oz/t."

"Ultrafine grinding of minerals has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years. Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The recent development of industrially proven and cost efficient technologies for ultrafine grinding has opened up another processing option for the treatment of finegrained metalliferous and refractory gold ores. The current commercial designs are variations of stirred mills used in the industrial minerals sector for the past 30 years. For the purposes of this paper ultrafine grinding is considered to be P80 of less than 15 microns.Attrition milling to fine grind sizes presents some challenging issues relating to scale-up including the dearth of information on the quantitative impact of feed and operating conditions, as well as the precise and accurate measurement of particle size distributions. Two examples from recent installations will be analyzed including Thalanga Copper and Century Zinc Mines. Both have diverse grind size targets for the SMD, yet both have realized significant metallurgical gains."

"l. IntroductionA reliable sampling system is the basis for an on-stream analyzer. This was realized in Outokumpu company when the development work of the Courier 300 On-Stream X-ray analysis system was started. Because Outokumpu Oy is a mining and mineral processing company, its engineers have been able to thoroughly test sampler prototypes in actual operating situations. The sampler development has been going for several years in close co-operation between company's concentrators, the Institute of Physics and the Instrument Division of Outokumpu Oy. The most active part of the work was done between 1969- 1972. Besides the reliable operation of a sampler special attention was paid to the representatively of the samples taken by the samplers. 2. The Courier 300 Sampling SystemThe sampling system comprises up to fourteen sampling circuits in one Courier analysis system. Each circuit consists of the following components:1. Primary sampler 2. Secondary sampler 3. Cleaner screen 4. Feeding tank5. Sample cell6. Timer-controlled sampler7. Pumps, sumps and pipesSecondary samplers, cleaner screen and feeding tanks are included in the secondary sct1npling system. The sample cells are located in the spectrometer cabinet of the analyzer."

"IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. "Significant strides have been made during the past decade to integrate the traditionally separate administrative functions of financial management, materials management and maintenance management.In 1983, Key Lake Mining Corporation (KLMC) brought on-stream one of the most technologically advanced mining operations in North America. There was a requirement to support this new facility with state-of-the-art management information systems.This paper will discuss the development and evolution of the corporation's computerized information systems with specific emphasis on the utilization of computer systems to assist maintenance personnel in performing their work activities:Note: In August of 1989, the administration and operation of the Key Lake Mine was assumed by CAMECO - A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation.IntroductionThe Key Lake Mining Corporation was incorporated in 1979 and operates a $500 million uranium mining and milling complex located in northern Saskatchewan.The feasibility study and environmental impact statements for the Key Lake Mine were submitted in 1979and in August of 1981, following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted. Ore processing commenced in October of 1983 and during 1984 a total of 10.4 million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) was produced. In 1987, an annual production of 13.5 million pounds was achieved clearly establishing Key Lake Mining Corporation as the world's leading producer of uranium oxide. Current ore resources are expected to extend production of the Key Lake facility into the year 2000."

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. "Stillwater Mining commenced mining operations at Nye, Montana in 1987 for the recovery of platinum and palladium. Exploration identified that the J-M Reef extended for 43 km. In 1998 Stillwater Mining made the decision to develop the East Boulder mine complex, located approximately 13 miles from the Stillwater mine complex at Nye, to increase production. This paper describes the design, construction, and start-up of the East Boulder process plant.INTRODUCTIONStillwater Mining Company have been producing Platinum and Palladium from their Nye, Montana operations since 1987. The mine production from Nye had been increased in stages with mine production being delivered through several portals and one vertical shaft.The deposit is narrow veined which prevents the application of bulk mining methods and thus limits the production capabilities.In order to increase the production of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) Stillwater made the decision to access the ore from the J-M Reef from the East Boulder site. The East Boulder mine site is located about 21 km (13 miles) from Nye, however as shown in Figure 1, the travel distance is closer to 188 km (114 miles). Distance, on strike, and space availability at Nye precluded the expansion of the Nye concentrator to handle the increased mining rate and supported the decision to install a new concentrator at East Boulder."

"Kaiser Resources Ltd. has completed feasibility studies resulting in approval of $277,500,000 for the construction of the Greenhills Surface Coal Mine, located 35 km north of Sparwood, B.C. The mine is designed to produce 1,800,000 tonnes per year of metallurgical coal over a 20-year period by conventional truck /shovel methods.The project is in the detailed design phase, with some preparation work being carried out on the site. The major construction activities are scheduled to commence in the spring of 1981. Mine development and pre-stripping will commence in July 1981, with first coal production scheduled for mid 1983.This paper will be a general description of the project and will include a discussion of the geology, reserves, mine planning, coal handling and processing, surface facilities and related topics.IntroductionProject DefinitionThe Greenhills Project is designed to produce, by conventional truck I shovel surface mining methods, 1,800,000 clean tonnes of metallurgical coal per year for twenty years . The production/ life constraints were chosen as being meaningful for planning and evaluation purposes after appraisal of the market potential and are not limited .by economic reserves. Substantial additional strippable reserves are available which would facilitate expansion of the proposed mine life and/ or capacity. In fact , all the facilities are designed so that they can be expanded in the future to accommodate a doubling of annual coal production, and certain portions of the coal processing facilities are being installed with an annual capacity of 3,600,000 tonnes. The mine will also produce approximately 2,400,000 clean tonnes of oxidized thermal coal, mostly in the first decade."

Le minage en profondeur sous contrainte modérée à élevée présente de nombreux défis aux opérateurs et aux ingénieurs de mine notamment au niveau du contrôle de terrain et de l?environnement minier souterrain, pour assurer la sécurité des travailleurs sous terre et la continuité du cycle d?opération. Des conditions de contrainte élevée signifient une pression accrue au front de taille et sur les structures minières tels les piliers de mine et les fins de zone, un risque de rupture violente ou de coup de toit plus élevé, des zones de rupture plus grandes au pourtour des excavations, des charges accrues sur le support de terrain, etc. Le présent article fournit un aperçu du travail fait à l?intérieur du Programme de Contrôle de terrain de CANMET au cours des sept (7) dernières années, entre 1995 et 2001, pour comprendre et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte à l?intérieur des structures minières. Les propriétés déterminées en laboratoire sur des échantillons rocheux et les prévisions effectuées au moment de la conception sont comparées avec les observations effectuées en chantier à la paroi des excavations et à l?intérieur de la masse rocheuse. La plupart des cas discutés ici montrent une corrélation satisfaisante entre les observations effectuées en chantier d?une part, et les résultats d?essai obtenus en laboratoire et les calculs réalisés lors de la conception d?autre part. Ces observations peuvent donc être considérées comme des moyens relativement sûrs pour vérifier et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte présents à l?intérieur des structures minières.

The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

"Rock rejection during the flotation of a copper-nickel ore was improved by adding carboxymethyl cellulose to both a rougher and cleaner flotation stage. The selection of the rock depressant was based on laboratory rates studies. Plant operating results are presented which confirm the laboratory selection of two particular brands of carboxymethyl cellulose.The rock assay of the concentrate was reduced from more than 40% to less than 15%.IntroductionThe traditional method of selecting flotation reagents relied upon batch bench scale tests, conducted under arbitrary conditions, to identify the effect of the reagent under examination. Too often these were ""one-off"" tests with little or no regard paid to the reproducibility of the results. Sophisticated researchers used statistical methods to design and evaluate the experiments but they were still obliged to rely on the arbitrary and often unreliable batch tests to generate the numbers that were analyzed statistically. An interesting side-effect of the enhanced sophistication of the statistical analysis was often that no significant effects would be uncovered in a series of experiments that would have generated many positive conclusions and much further experimentation if the same results had been evaluated by the traditional method.In the recent past, at least two groups of researchers a have directed their attention to the reliability of the batch experiments with a view toward improving the reproducibility of the test data. In this work the best of the improvements advocated by both of these groups have been adopted in order to generate kinetic data from batch tests that are as reproducible as possible.The objective of the work was to reduce the rock content of a bulk sulphide concentrate produced at Inco's Shebandowan mill. During 1982 the Shebandowan concentrate analyzed 3.5% Cu, 7.4010 Ni, 25% pyrrhotite and more than 40% rock, which resulted in an MgO content of 10.4%. Besides the expense of shipping all of this rock to Sudbury, the rock also contributed to the poor filterability of the concentrate. On favourable occasions the moisture content of the filter cake was slightly over 20% by weight. The magnesia content of the concentrate was deleterious to the reverberatory furnaces used by Inco for smelting nickel concentrate because the slag viscosity increased as the magnesia content increased, and the nickel lost in the slag went up."

"The unconformity beneath 75 per cent or over 6000 km2 of the Athabasca Basin in Alberta lies within economically exploitable depths. The basement beneath this unconformity consists of an extension of the Wylie Lake Pluton, locally faulted and containing areas of mylonitic rocks. While the rocks of the Wylie Lake Pluton are not promising host rocks for uranium ore deposits, the areas of mylonites, graphitic rocks and possible remnants of granitegneiss would bear closer examination. One area of maficmylonites shows a weathering zone enriched in Si, Ca, Na, Pb, Ni, Ba, Co, Sr, Zn and U in addition to reported values of 0.08 oz/ton gold. This zone occurs beneath 800 m to 900 m of Athabasca Group sediments, but similar rock types are present beneath much thinner cover elsewhere. Detailed geophysical exploration is required over the area of thinner Athabasca Group rocks to define more precisely the areas of promising basement rock type.IntroductionThe Athabasca Basin in Alberta has considerable economic potential which has not yet been realized. The geological setting is closely analogous to parts of the basin in Saskatchewan which host major uranium deposits. Recent advances in geophysical techniques have led to deposits being located in Saskatchewan below 600 m of cover. This means that the unconformity between the Athabasca Group and the basement lies at exploitable depths over 6000 km2 or 75 per cent of the Alberta portion of the basin. Much of this area was only cursorily examined almost a decade ago. In addition, Alberta's new Metallic Mineral Regulations have clarified the regulatory situation in the area, and opened up much land for exploration.
