Synthetic gypsum is the calcium sulfate co-product of a number of industrial processes. Synthetic gypsum utilization as an alternative to the naturally occurring mineral continues to grow in the gypsum industry. In particular, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum produced by the electrical utility industry has had a significant impact and a far-reaching effect on the gypsum wallboard manufacturing industry. This paper will discuss the various synthetic gypsum sources verses natural gypsum and highlight issues of use in gypsum wallboard and related products.

Introduction The mining industry is perhaps best characterized by the numerous and abnormally high risks associated with the business of mining and by its most basic assets - ore deposits, people and technology. At the most fundamental level, it is the quality and effective utilization of these basic assets that determine a mining company's ability to compete efficiently in the international market place. The gold industry has received much attention in recent years and especially in recent months, for good reason. This commodity serves as an excellent platform for the subsequent discussion of these three basic assets and their role in mining's future. Facets of the gold industry The fate of this noble metal in recent times illustrates some of the various risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of high-quality assets, whether they be ore deposits, people or technologies. The following comments pertaining to the gold industry help place proper focus on subsequent discussions. All monetary amounts given are in US dollars. Throughout 1997, falling gold prices broke record after record: first hitting three-year lows, then a 12-year low in July and finally an 18-year low at year's end. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1997, the price of gold fell by more than $2.57/g ($80/oz), or some 22%. The decline in gold-mining profitability and stock prices was even more dramatic. At the beginning of 1997, the 20 largest gold producers in North America had a market capitalization of approximately $44.5 billion. At year's end, this market cap had fallen to $26.2 billion, a reduction of 41%. The total market cap of all the world's gold companies fell from $71 billion to $46 billion, a 35% drop (Serwer, 1998). Analyses suggest that, at a spot gold price of $9.65/g ($300/oz), only one, or possibly two, North American gold-producing companies can make money when break-even or "total costs of production" are considered. While strong hedge positions mitigate this situation in the short term, clearly, this is an industry in desperate straits. For example, write-downs for North American producers in 1997 were approximately $2.5 billion. Speculative short positions in 1997 were near historical record highs and generally exceeded long positions by factors of 9:1 or 10:1. Much of this is driven by some US commercial banks, hedge fund managers and commodity speculators who can significantly move gold prices sharply over short periods of time by selling gold they do not own in the expectation they can buy it back at a lower price before they have to deliver. These signifcant short positions are likely to continue as long as central banks are willing to sell or loan gold to financial institutions that in turn make the gold available to speculators who hope to capitalize on price fluctuations. The Far East accounts for approximately 26% of the annual demand for gold. Including India, the region accounts for 43% of total demand. More than 85% of the physical demand for gold is for investment jewelry in Asia and the Middle East. This demand is extraordinarily price sensitive. The fairly recent turmoil in Asian markets and economies, combined with currency devaluations throughout the region, have made gold more expensive (30% to 50% in local currencies) for those peoples most likely to treat gold as a safe investment haven. Higher interest rates also have reduced the amount of money they have to spend on consumer goods such as jewelry. All of these recent Asian events are deflationary in nature. Zirconium is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth?s crust and it most often occurs in the form of silicate (as zircon), less often in the oxide form (as baddeleyite or caldesite). Historically, the world?s production of zircon was entirely derived from mining and processing beach sands or heavy mineral sands that were being exploited primarily for their titanium content, i.e., to generate TiO2 feedstocks that would be used for making titanium pigments and, to a lesser extent, titanium metal. Zircon was then regarded as a byproduct, with the sharply fluctuating prices typical of a commodity where the supply is essentially involuntary and not truly responsive to market demand. However, in recent years, zircon has shown considerable mining investment appeal in its own right. Projects have been planned ? and some have already come to fruition ? based mainly on the zircon potential of the deposit. Booming Chinese demand for zircon to meet the requirements of the ceramic and zirconium chemical sectors has been a major factor causing zircon prices (f.o.b. Australia) to surge from US$674/t ($611/st) at [ ] the end of 2005 to beyond US$2,400/t ($2,177/st) by the end of 2011.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates world production of natural zeolites to be 2.7 Mt (3 million st) in 2013. China ranked ?rst with 2 Mt (2.2 million st), followed by the Republic of Korea at 230 kt (253,000 st) and Turkey at 50 kt (55,000 st). Japan?s production is reported to have increased as a result of zeolites, reportedly low grade local mordenites, being used to treat the low-level radioactive contaminants in the areas surrounding the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. China and other countries? high-volume, low-value construction applications, which include dimension stone, pozzolans and lightweight aggregate, are also included in production. This means the production data does not accurately indicate the quantities used in high-value added specialty applications. Consumption in the United States, according to USGS estimates, increased slightly, to an estimated 71.3 kt (78,400 st). Domestic uses for natural zeolites were, in decreasing order by tonnage, animal feed, pet litter, cement (primarily down-hole cement applications by the drilling industry), water purification, odor control, waste water cleanup, fungicide or pesticide carrier, gas absorbent, fertilizer carrier, oil absorbent, desiccant, catalyst and aquaculture. The six leading uses accounted for more than 70 percent of the domestic natural zeolite sales tonnage.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

A method for the feasibility assessment of open-pit operations using conventional shovel/ truck systems to mine steeply pitched coal seams has been applied at The Pennsylvania State University. Three computer models were developed for the analysis: a geology and reserves model (GEOL), an open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS), and a cash flow model (CASH) (Manula, Albert, and Burgos, 1976). GEOL provides the basic mining data; OPMHS simulates shovel/truck performance related to pit profiles and average mining locations to provide productivity rates needed to size the system; and CASH provides either a selling price or rate of return (ROR) for the product. The general flow of information generated by these models is shown in Fig. 1. Since the ratio of overburden-extracted to coal-produced places a definite economic limit upon a mining venture, geological data must be analyzed with the least possible manual effort to minimize computational errors. This is especially true if the property contains several seams that are steeply pitched. In this situation, a computerized analysis is by far the most efficient and effective method to determine coal reserves and waste tonnage. This chapter describes the reserve model developed at Penn State and provides an example to demonstrate its application.

The MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process was developed during the 1960s by the Midland-Ross Corporation, which had pioneered shaft furnace technology and stoichiometric gas reforming for use in processing minerals. In 1969, the first MIDREX® Direct Reduction Plant was built in Portland, OR. Since then, 49 additional modules have been sold in 18 countries. For the last ten years, over 60 percent of the world's direct reduced iron has been produced in MIDREX Plants. During the quarter century since commercialization, many technical improvements have been made, including larger shaft furnaces, in-situ reforming, greater heat recovery, improved catalysts, and hot briquetting. Midrex continues to enhance the technology in the areas of economy-of-scale, energy efficiency, alternate fuels, and raw material flexibility.

Engineers face significant challenges when determining what geometry provides the most profitable and safe stope for extraction. Several techniques and optimization algorithms have been developed in recent years, but most fail to find optimal solutions because they are heuristic or LP-based without efficient geometric constraints. This paper presents a two-dimensional binary linear programming (BLP) model for determining the optimal combination of blocks in a stope that maximizes the economic value of the layout of stopes for a sublevel deposit. The work draws from Queyranne and Wolsey’s (2017 & 2018) formulations of tight constraints for bounded up/down times in production planning problems to formulate novel and efficient geometric constraints along with geotechnical and grade constraints for the BLP stope layout optimization problem. Results from the model indicate that it is possible to formulate efficient shape constraints in LP-based approaches. The model used for the numerical example contained 144 valuable blocks out of 774 blocks, which translates into an economic value of $53.21M. The BLP model selected 60 valuable blocks and 13 waste blocks that met all constraints translating into a maximum economic value of $34.4M in 1.83 hours within a gap tolerance of 0.00%.

Innovation has to be a part of every company's approach to the solutions, our concept is to start with a "Blank Piece of Paper.' The objective of 'this paper is to outline steps which can be taken to improve the profitability of a mining business. This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. This philosophy is based on our actual, hands-on experience in major open pit operations worldwide over the past 25 years.

"Edge effect is a condition widely observed in High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) operations that gives rise to reduced comminution at the edges of the roll surfaces. This effect is caused by a reduction in the local crushing pressure at the edges of the rolls resulting from the sliding friction between the static cheek plates and HPGR feed material. Practically, this has an impact on equipment sizing, as the edge effect leads to coarser particles reporting to downstream equipment in open-circuit operations and increased circulating load and diminished HPGR circuit capacity in closed-circuit operations.To address this, Metso's HRC™ HPGR incorporates an Arch-frame to maintain a parallel relationship between the rolls and allow for the use of a flanged roll design. We conducted a series of pilot-plant tests with a 750 mm by 400 mm HRC HPGR to compare the performance of the flanged roll design against that of a traditional cheek plate arrangement under similar operating conditions. The edge effect was found to be significantly reduced with the flanged roll design. Based on the pilot-plant results, the implications for circuit design, energy efficiency and overall plant performance in a full-scale application were investigated and discussed.IntroductionGlobal trends such as lower ore grades and rising operating costs are driving the market toward more energy-efficient mineral processing solutions, most notably in comminution circuit design. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) have been recognized as an energy-efficient solution relative to more conventional circuit designs. The basic operating principle of HPGRs, in which a fairly uniform pressure is applied to a bed of material in the compression zone, lends itself to this improved energy efficiency (Morley, 2006). Studies have estimated that savings of 10-15 percent are possible when comparing an HPGR circuit with a traditional SABC circuit (Rosario and Hall, 2008). While HPGRs offer a more energy-efficient solution than tumbling mills, there is still room for improvement in many aspects of the design. Edge effect, in particular, is one such aspect that limits the effectiveness of the machines. Edge effect is the impaired performance at the edge of the rolls due to a reduction in crushing pressure (Morley, 2010; van der Meer, 2010). As described in our prior work (Knorr, Herman and Whalen, 2013), edge effect is caused by the interaction between the ore entering the crusher and the relatively static cheek plates positioned at the edges of the rolls. As the material is drawn into the crushing zone, the sliding friction between the ore and the cheek plates inhibits the ability of material to be effectively drawn into the compression zone at the edges of the rolls. This reduces the crushing force in those edge regions relative to the center of the roll where material is being drawn into the compression zone at a higher rate. In addition, the cheek plates of a traditional HPGR design are held in place by spring-loaded brackets that are adjustable to manage the clearance. This spring-loaded cheek plate design prevents full compression of the material in the edge regions of the roll as there is relief at the outer edges."

INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

Volcanic ash, although a little-used Kansas resource, is available in forty counties with estimated, reserves of more than 20 million tons. It was first produced in Kansas in the early 1900?s but not until the early 1920 is did it become an important abrasive material. Total production to date is estimated at 2 million tons, the major use being as an abrasive in scouring compounds and soaps, additional uses include ceramic glazes, an additive in cement, and a filler and stabilizer in hot mix asphalt for paving. Unrecorded tonnages have also been used in construction of black-top (macadam) roads. From 1916 through 1944, Kansas ranked first among the states in volcanic ash production; peak production was about 52, 000 tons in 1923. Since 1945, production has steadily declined, primarily because materials other than volcanic ash are now being used for abrasives; only two producers operated in 1964.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years, and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. To the best of our knowledge, short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has yet to be explored extensively, and hardly any model can generate a shortterm extraction sequence considering an IPCC. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to develop a short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The model's objective is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize the cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirements, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by the strategic plan. The proposed model will be implemented in an iron ore mine case study for verification. The model is developed and solved using MATLAB. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC justifies the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short-term perspective.

The International Standards Organization (ISO) 9000 series of quality standards was published in 1987. First initiated by the British in the mid-1970's to assure the quality of British goods and services.
