1. Introduction The new Cleuson-Dixence development project in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps, involves the construction of a new link between the Grande-Dixence dam (still world recordholder with a height of 300 m) and a power house on the banks of the Rhone consisting of approximately 20 km tunnels and shafts, and involving a fall of about 1900 m. This 1200 MW project will replace an existing 900 MW structure built in the 1960s, no longer considered efficient. The new project comprises a head race drift about 15.8 km long, a surge tank, an inclined cascade shaft 4,2 km long, and an underground power station. The work for lots C and D (head race drift from Tortin to Tracouet, surge tank, six adits ans the complete inclined shaft) was awarded to our group (Prader, Locher, SELL, Losinger, Evéquoz, Dénériaz, Imboden and Bouygues). The geological conditions are: Lower part of the shaft (300 m) : sedimentary - sandstone and soft tertiary sandstone. Gold prices are rising, in what is coming to be seen as the beginning of a longer term upward trend. After languishing between $325/oz and $364/ oz from early 1991 into early 1993, prices began rising in the first half of 1993. Gold rose from a low of $326/oz in March 1993 to $414/oz on an intraday basis in early August. There was a speculative sell-off at that point, which took gold prices quickly back down to $350/oz briefly in October 1993. At that time, there still was a fair degree of skepticism about gold's price prospects. Many banks believed that gold prices could not mount a sustained rally. As prices dropped in August and September of last year, these suspicions seemed to be confirmed. Gold prices quickly rebounded, however, reaching $395/oz by early January 1994. The strength of this renewed increase led many banks, investors and others that had held negative views of gold to grow more positive. They began buying gold and trading it from the long side of the market. The result was that gold prices remained strong during the first quarter of 1994, trading between $375/oz and $390/oz.

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

A method for the feasibility assessment of open-pit operations using conventional shovel/ truck systems to mine steeply pitched coal seams has been applied at The Pennsylvania State University. Three computer models were developed for the analysis: a geology and reserves model (GEOL), an open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS), and a cash flow model (CASH) (Manula, Albert, and Burgos, 1976). GEOL provides the basic mining data; OPMHS simulates shovel/truck performance related to pit profiles and average mining locations to provide productivity rates needed to size the system; and CASH provides either a selling price or rate of return (ROR) for the product. The general flow of information generated by these models is shown in Fig. 1. Since the ratio of overburden-extracted to coal-produced places a definite economic limit upon a mining venture, geological data must be analyzed with the least possible manual effort to minimize computational errors. This is especially true if the property contains several seams that are steeply pitched. In this situation, a computerized analysis is by far the most efficient and effective method to determine coal reserves and waste tonnage. This chapter describes the reserve model developed at Penn State and provides an example to demonstrate its application.

In the past, the center of most companies' e-initiatives has been on reduction of indirect costs, such as selling and procurement. Recently, e-commerce has moved its attention from back-office functions into manufacturing, in order to significantly reduce direct operating costs. This paper describes many of the Web-Powered Manufacturing initiatives being employed across various industries, and relates them to similar opportunities being started within the mining and mineral-processing sector. The following opportunities are enabled by Web-Powered Manufacturing: • Collaboration with outside experts to extend their pool of resources • Management of remote and distributed operations • Tie-in of small operations to a larger operation • Monitoring a position in a JV operated by a partner • Managing a plant located in someone else's facility • Having a chemical supplier manage his inventory in a customer's tanks • Having an equipment supplier remotely troubleshoot his equipment installed in a customer's site • Having an additive supplier provide remote pro-active. guidance in optimization of a customer's operation • Having software suppliers take responsibility for the results of their applications • Outsourcing software and systems support by providing remote access Details of one of these opportunities are described in this article, and the benefits captured using this approach and the technologies necessary to make them a reality are emphasized.

It is important to realize that lending institutions have a very different risk-profile from that of an equity investor. For bank financing, a feasibility study must address the concerns of the lender and these can be summarized under the four 'PI Is: Project, Performance, Product and People. Generally, feasibility studies focus on the measurable project risks associated with a new venture, but frequently insufficient emphasis is placed on key risk areas such as ore grade and metallurgical recovery. Before accepting full or even partial non-recourse risk, financial institutions will demand evidence that the project was constructed according to specifications and within budget and that its Performance within agreed limits has been demonstrated. Product risk should be discussed in detail in any feasibility study. For industrial minerals, penetration of the market can be critical to success and for commodities with volatile prices, the sensitivity of the cash flow to a range of prices should be carried out. Methods of reducing price risk such as long term contracts or, in the case of gold, forward selling should be carefully evaluated. The People risk is rarely discussed in feasibility studies, but can be a key element. Few projects turn out to be faithful copies of the study and the ability of the operator to identify

Talc, as a mineral, is rather widespread, but as an ore sultable for mining, it is rather limited. Materials sold as "talc" range from the impeccable white material from Italy to a gray-green-bluish material from Virginia. Some uses of the material called "talc" seem to be determined by the color of the material, some by the chemistry of the material, and some by the particle size of the ground material. But, there seems to be some overlapping of criteria used to judge the acceptability of a raw material. So then, any producer of talc material that is not a consumer of this raw material is faced with the age-old problems: "what do I call the stuff, and to whom should I try to sell it?" The answer to the first part is easy: if you want a high price, call it "talc"; if you want a low price, call it "soapstone". This may seem like a very simplified answer, but it is apparent that some of the products sold as "talc" have more than a minor amount of impurities in them; whereas, if they were called "soapstone", these same products would probably get a lower price.

In order for a taxpayer to produce income, he may be required to exhaust his capital assets. With respect to the mining industry, those exhaustible capital assets may result in income tax deductions under the general categories of depreciation, obsolescence, losses and depletion. The percentage depletion deduct ion concept is not based upon "economic" depletion, or "geological" depletion theories. Instead, it is wholly an income tax concept created by Congress. This is significant in that, in its application, tax depletion has no adherence to traditional economic or geological depletion concepts For example, the Internal Revenue Code limits percentage depletion to 50 percent of the miner's net income for the taxable period.1/ Should a particular miner extract and sell 500,000 tons of material during the year, but at a loss, he receives no percentage depletion. The same would apply to an electric utility which mined its own coal. Should its mining costs exceed the "going price" for coal, as established by actual arm's-length sales in the market, the utility has no net income, and is therefore not entitled to percentage depletion.2/

A $20M pressure oxidation facility is under construction at the Nerco Con Mine, Yellowknife. Plant commissioning will start in the third quarter of 1992. Roasting of arsenical auriferous concentrates prior to 1970 left 45,000 tons each of highly toxic gold-bearing arsenic trioxide sludge and roaster calcine at the minesite. Safe disposal of these wastes has been a high priority. In 1983 an arsenic trioxide plant was built by the former owner to re-treat the sludge and to sell the product. Due to a poor market and high operating losses, the plant was closed by Nerco in 1989. Mine production in the future will revert increasingly to refractory ore as a replacement for free-milling ore which has been the mill feed since the roaster was shut down. With this fact in mind, Nerco management saw the potential of a proven process to recover the gold from a combined feedstock of refractory flotation concentrate, sludge, and calcine waste. A further requirement was the stabilization of all the arsenic as an insoluble ferric arsenate. By the end of 1989, after the completion of a literature search and a study of process economics, pressure oxidation was selected. Extensive bench and pilot plant work was completed in 1990 and early 1991 to develop the process parameters and to complete environmental testing of the autoclave products. Management approval for construction of a pressure oxidation facility was made in December 1990. Plant capacity is 96 tpd requiring a 40 tpd VSA oxygen plant on site. Detailed engineering began in March 1991. The pressure oxidation building was completed by the end of 1991. The autoclave arrived on site and was mounted on its foundation in December 1991.

In west-central England, 183 m (600 ft) below the Cheshire Plain, lie the evaporate remains of an ancient sea. Stratified into nine beds of salt separated by marl bands, the deposit stretches roughly 21 x 12 km (13 x 7.5 miles) and contains reserves of rock salt estimated as high as 400 Gt (440 billion st). The Winsford Salt Works, one of England's largest underground mines, extracts the Cheshire salt and sells it for use as animal feed, for application in de-icing programs, and as a key ingredient in sodium fertilizer production and a variety of other industrial processes. Because road de-icing is an important market, demand for Winsford's salt varies with the severity of British winters. Design capacity is 2.25 Mt/a (2.5 million/year). However, production peaked at 2 Mt (2.2 million st) in 1987. Over the past five years, annual production has averaged 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Run-of-mine salt averages 92.5% NaCl, mixed with about 5% marl. The marl was formed by deposition of a reddish dust blown into the Cheshire basin from deserts in what is now central Europe. Association with the marl adds color to the salt, producing tea-colored crystals that resemble unrefined sugar. Adaptation of coal mining systems Rock salt mining in the Winsford district began at least as early as 1682. Mining at the current site dates from 1844 but was shut down from 1892 to 1928. In the early 1900s, a series of catastrophic collapses and floods plagued and ultimately shut down then-active Cheshire brine-salt producers. Subsequently, Winsford reopened and began adapting mechanized underground coal mining systems to rock salt extraction.

Anyone with geothermal experience can readily attest that geothermal operations are a natural extension of oil and gas operations. A geothermal company and an oil company need the same type of people to do the same kind of work. In the geothermal industry, geologists and geophysicists define prospects through surface geology, analysis of surface seeps, magnetics, gravity, and resistivity surveys - techniques similar to those used in the petroleum industry. In addition, shallow (250-ft) temperature gradient holes often are used in geothermal operations. Landmen take geothermal leases that are patterned after oil and gas leases. Exploratory drilling is done with the same drilling contractors and same drilling rigs, with minor modification. Drilling foremen and drilling engineers share the same objective of making the most hole, in the shortest time, at the least cost, with a proper completion. Petroleum engineers test the wells, design the completions, determine the reserves, make economic calculations, work with the tax assessor, and manage the reservoirs. Production engineers build roads, locations and pipelines, install gas/liquid separators and meters, and operate production and injection facilities. A contract to sell steam to a public utility is required. Various governmental regulations, permits, environmental concerns, and public affairs pose similar problems in both industries. Also required of both are top management people who are acquainted with geologic risk, prepared to accept million dollar dry holes, willing to bid competitively at lease sales, and able to invest large sums based on a technology not yet fully proven. Successful geothermal development requires in-depth financial ability similar to that required for petroleum development. A high capital investment is required early for leases, geological and geophysical work, and exploratory and confirmation drilling. After

Mining companies are increasingly approaching the social aspect of sustainable development within the rural communities that neighbour their projects and operations. Rural community engagement requires significant effort and resources, and it can be extremely challenging for mining companies to earn and sustain social capital. The focus on rural, proximal community engagement is not to be understated and has led to significant benefits in many communities. However, opposition to mining projects is often exhibited in urban environments, where there may be potential for mining companies to gain social capital with relative ease. Cities tend to have existing frameworks for community engagement and public activation, such as annual parades and festivals, that make it easy for a mining company to provide financial support or value-in-kind. Local organizations and community groups can achieve the same amount of engagement in an urban environment with significantly less effort required from the mining company. By applying simple marketing principles to community engagement strategies, corporations can increase awareness for their business and encourage city residents to think critically about the origin of resources. Unlike many corporations, mining companies are not marketing or selling products to individual consumers. From this arises the opportunity for a company to use marketing to promote other positive initiatives and, as such, connect their brand with positive messaging thus earning social capital. This may lead to a wide variety of secondary impacts including benefits to recruitment efforts, increased political support, and positive media coverage. This paper explores these matters with special reference to Vancouver, BC, Canada and the mining companies Teck and Goldcorp.

For thousands of years gold has been not only a commodity, valued for its comparative scarceness, immutability and homogeneity but also a medium of exchange which has no nationality. Approximately 90% of the gold produced is still accessible in the world, although some of it in museums, galleries, jewellery and dental work is not immediately available for circulation. The majority is held as bars by central banks for their reserves; the balance circulates as coinage or bullion held for investment. The value is further enhanced by the political aspect that gold cannot be debased as paper currency can and, therefore, it always becomes an investment refuge. It has always been possible to buy and sell gold at a price which is readily established by reference to bullion's weight and purity; and it is this fact which makes a loan denominated in gold, rather than one in currency, a viable alternative means of finance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some general aspects of what is considered to be one of the more effective and presently popular methods of financing the development of a gold mine - the gold loan. This is not intended to discuss all the minute details which must be uniquely designed to fit each individual situation, but rather to provide general guidelines. You will all be aware of the traditional sequence whereby companies primarily finance exploration work by the raising of equity through the sale of shares to the public or by that unique Canadian form.

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores

At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. Western Greece is a favorable site for exploration and discovery of oil fields. The most important potential source rocks seem to be all the rocks deposited before middle Jurassic under special circumstances, such as reducing conditions, which allowed preservation and maturation of the organic material. In general all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene are not favorite source rocks. The porosity type was studied on fifty samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potential reservoir rocks are the porous Paleogene wackestones-packstones with boring, channel and vuggy porosity type. Finally seal rocks are the impermeable mud-stones and wackestones of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene age. These rocks consist of micrite and whole sells of foraminiferas and the porosity type is mainly intercrystal/interparticle. A Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, conducted on seventy samples using a wet oxidation method, has revealed an extremely low TOC content (less than 0.05 %). This amount is by far less than the minimum organic content amount, required for source rock characterization and characterizes all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene age. Additionally, 18O and 13C stable isotope analysis was contacted and the results are given in d values. All the rocks within the studied time interval have much lower d values than petroleum source rocks. Clay mineral content was studied in almost seventy samples. As is indicated by the clay mineral content the studied rocks have reached up to the Middle Diagenesis and the temperature during diagenesis was rather low.

During the last decade or so great advances were made in the solvent extraction, electro winning technologies. They, combined with heap leaching, made it viable to exploit large, relatively low grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra mine is a good example for such a deposit. Situated in Northern Chile at an elevation of about 4000m (14000 feet), 70 krn north of Calama, the El Abra deposit has been known for many years. In the early 1990's Codelco decided to sell a major holding in the deposit to international mining companies. After lengthy negotiations Cyprus Minerals finalized in June 1994 the purchase of 51% of the deposit with Codelco retaining the balance. lance. Already in 1993 Cyprus and the engineer on the project, began discussions with international materials handling companies with regards to the materials handling system required for the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast track project. Immediately after the notice to proceed with the project, several companies were invited to submit competitive conceptual proposals for that portion of the material handling system which was to transport crushed and treated ore from the plant to the leach pad and build the leaching heaps at a rate of up to 150 000 tons per day. A supplier was selected. Additional studies were made for the conveyor system from the mine to the fine crushing plant. Due to the extremely rugged terrain and high altitude at the mine, a decision was made to locate the plant and the leaching operations 15 km east of the mine at an elevation of 3400m. In July 1994 the supplier started the conceptual engineering with a design team at the engineer's San Francisco office. The undertaking was unique in the sense that the supplier's engineering team was integrated into the project for the duration of the conceptual engineering. The open and continuous communication greatly contributed to the success of the design work.
