New or improved technology will continue to drive productivity improvements through the next decade. In January 1988, I presented a paper titled, "Large Underground Mines of the 1990s? before the SME. I will follow some of the themes developed in that paper as modified by our experience in the past two years. In order for a coal company to be profitable today, it has had to reduce unit costs experienced in the past. This is because the current average realization, even accounting for a recent strengthening, remains below that of a few years ago. Doing business as was done in the past is not good enough. The coal industry needs to increase productivity in the range of 5-10% annually merely to stay even with rising costs. Underground productivity has been increasing more rapidly than that for surface mining. With the exception of the Powder River basin of Montana and Wyoming, underground productivity has caught up with that for surface mining in many regions of America. There are a number of technological factors which have attributed to increases in underground productivity and which should be factors in the future.

Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. Most of us realize that our nation's roadways are under ever-increasing stresses, from higher traffic counts to increased tire pressures and their resulting loads. At a time when the interstate system as originally envisioned is completed, and the National Highway System is being drawn to replace it, it is appropriate that we examine design and construction methods for the next century. The stone industry shares a common desire to produce high quality, cost-effective roadways that perform over time. The superior sub-grade and road base structure provides for the superior roadway. Since I am neither an engineer nor a contractor, I will not attempt to suggest design or construction methods. What I can do is share my company's experience in supplying road base materials by using a historical perspective in Virginia and some trends in the market that we have observed. Road building and related non-building construction are still far and away our largest markets as an industry. If we can help to improve the end product of our biggest customers, we add value to our own product. Indeed, in a time of budget constraints and competing demands for government dollars, we must show value over the life of a pavement structure to ensure their long-term funding.

Managing energy efficiency is becoming a keystone of successful companies. The suggested energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations must follow a well-structured approach to include the following: ? Understanding where energy is being used and why. ? Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures. ? Driving visibility to targets and results. ? Leveraging the energy spent across the enterprise. ? Developing a robust energy and sustainability strategy. Additionally, it must ensure that all decisions support the financial and operational integrity of the business.

The problem of fine coal slimes has been addressed in a unique way at A. T. Massey Coal?Company. Several plants have employed two-stage classifying cyclones to separate the minus 1 mm raw coal into 3 sizes. Larger cyclones make the initial cut at approximately 150 µ (100?mesh) sending the underflow to a cleaning circuit (usually spirals) while the overflow is pumped to a secondary cyclone circuit using smaller cyclones. The small cyclones make a cut at near 70 µ (200 mesh) and produce an underflow that is a des limed flotation feed. The overflow is discarded to refuse due to its high ash and superfine size which would produce a high moisture product even if suitably recovered.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S. Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

Bentonite is a common name applied to a variety of clays that develope swelling properties when associated with water. Useful bentonite deposits occur in many Western and Southern states. Their origins may consist of the alteration of volcanic sediments or the decomposition of shallow lake deposits. The specific type of bentonite that will be discussed in this review will be only the Western or high swelling sodium type bentonite that is mined primarily in Wyoming. Wyoming bentonite first entered the market in the late 1880's when it was used as an oil absorbing cosmetic. In the 1920's it was discovered that superior binding properties were present which created new opportunities in pharmaceutical, animal feed, and steel foundries. The swelling properties that were exhibited by the high swelling Wyoming bentonites soon led to its use in oil exploration when the rotary drilling process developed a need for multipurpose fluids. Bentonites in general and Wyoming bentonite in particular have fascinated chemists and process development specialists since the 1920's. There exists a long list of industrial uses that has led to hundreds of patents and extensive literature reviews. The binding and swelling properties are developed as a result of large surface areas and high cation exchange properties. Water, being a di polar molecule, attaches to the ionic vacancies and forms a network of tightly held water particles which in turn produces an impermeable seal or a binding characteristic in unconsolidated powder. Newer uses for Wyoming bentonite that once again utilized the binding and swelling properties include the pelletizing of iron ore and a vast array of civil engineering applications including slurry trenching, lagoon sealing, and garbage landfill sealing.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

The current level of environmental statutes and regulations, and the legal/liability considerations, has evolved through regulatory enactment of mine reclamation laws and other existing environmental laws, such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). The world has seen unprecedented economic changes in recent years, starting with the stock market collapse of 2008 and the great recession that followed. With these changes, the mining industry, like others, has been forced to find ways to adapt to the shifting and sometimes volatile conditions. It has been a bumpy ride that has not been easy. Prices for most commodities have been in a decline in the past several quarters ? albeit still well above the average prices of 10 years ago ? as the costs of production have been on a steady incline for the past 10 years. Adding to the concern was the report in April that China, which had grown at an average pace of 10 percent/year, for the past decade, slowed to less than 8 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, catching many off guard. Even gold, once the safe haven for investors during rocky times, stumbled in April of this year, losing 7 percent of its value in two days. So what?s an investor to do ? and how can companies still attract financing? For the first time in 10 years, SME, in conjunction with the New York Local Section of SME, attempted to clear the waters of the mining finance sector with a conference focused on ?Current Trends in Mining Finance.? Held at City University of New York, Graduate Center, April 29-30, the two-day conference attracted 148 attendees and was intended for senior executives and mining industry specialists, covering a range of important topics and trends through 17 panels with about 50 speakers. The presentations came from representatives from some of the most influential companies in the mining and financial sectors, including Citi, Nomura, Societe Generale, Caterpillar, Newmont Mining Corp., Ernst & Young, Export Development Canada (EDC), KPMG, HSBC, Tocqueville Asset Management, BNP Paribas, Revett Minerals, Royal Gold, Environ and ERM.

In the minerals industry today, the ?low hanging fruit? that once existed to debottleneck production and improve recovery, while meeting market needs for quality in mineral processing operations, are more and more difficult to find. Systematic methods for establishing plant mass flow, recovery, operational efficiency and control strategy in context with customer specifications provides the necessary insight and confidence for plant operators to prioritize improvement projects in order to maximize return on investment (ROI) for the site. The evaluation of aggregate and industrial mineral processing plants requires the following steps when projecting cost saving opportunities: collecting background data, conducting a base-line evaluation, analyzing specific unit-operation performance, defining investment options, prioritizing the selected improvement opportunities and the implementing process changes. The following paper describes the approach and challenges of developing an improvement plan for a dry and wet mineral processing operation.

On January I, 1988, Chino Mines Company initiated the use of a system of economic splits for all materials encountered in mining. All mined material is evaluated as mill ore, solvent extraction-electrowinning plant feed and non-ore material to determine its disposition. Post-implementation studies indicate that a significant increase in financial returns on material mined was realized when compared with the copper cut-off grade previously in use.

The graphite industry as a whole has gone through many changes over the years. Most of the graphite used in major applications since the turn of the century were basic natural or electrode by-product synthetic materials, processed using simple crushing, screening, or grinding techniques. In the mid 1970's new thermal technology was developed which changed the face of the .graphite industry, and opened up a panacea of new products and capabilities. Materials produced through this new technology have helped revolutionize new products and processes in industries including automotive, batteries, fuel cells, electronics, iron, lubricants and steel. "In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations.
