Ligas de alumínio possuem, dentre diversas propriedades, uma atrativa combinação entre resistência mecânica e densidade, característica que leva à utilização cada vez maior desses materiais em setores estratégicos, como as indústrias aeronáutica e automobilística. O aumento da resistência dessas ligas, por sua vez, está associado ao tratamento de endurecimento por precipitação, podendo ainda ser influenciado pelo encruamemto do metal, esse último decorrente da eventual realização de deformação plástica entre as etapas de solubilização e envelhecimento do referido processamento. Dentro desse contexto, neste trabalho foi avaliado o comportamento mecânico de amostras da liga de alumínio 7.075 submetidas à compressão monotônica e cíclica após a etapa de solubilização do tratamento de endurecimento por precipitação. O comportamento do material foi analisado através de ensaios de dureza. Os resultados evidenciaram os efeitos das características e da magnitude da deformação na propriedade mecânica da liga.

Energy efficiency, equipment reliability and cost reduction are of the key factors in any efficient plant. Badische Stahlwerke (BSW) started using its own burner technology in 2001, this was developed by Badische Stahl-Engineering (BSE). Over the past 15 years, Badische improved all aspects of its Virtual Lance Burner (VLB), to perfectly fit all steelmaking requirements. This tiltable VLB was first tested at BSW’s electric arc furnace no. 2 in 2012. Promising results like reduction of refractory wear, energy efficiency, reliability, etc., were obtained. At the same time the existing VLB system was further improved with regards to the design of the water-cooled copper box. Today in 2016 both EAFs at BSW are equipped with the new patented tiltable system and the new copper box design. The paper will describe the results of the past years at Badische, but will also show the performance at other installations.

O presente trabalho estudou o comportamento de uma liga de titânio ASTM-F67Gr1 frente à corrosão e à tribocorrosão em meio fisiológico. Para a realização desta pesquisa foi desenvolvido um aparato experimental capaz de impor simultaneamente um desgaste mecânico e corrosivo às amostras testadas, visando avaliar o comportamento tribocorrosivo. O meio corrosivo selecionado foi a solução de Ringer. A partir de curvas de polarização potenciodinâmica foi possível obter os parâmetros eletroquímicos necessários à realização dos ensaios de tribocorrosão bem como comprovar a excelente resistência a corrosão do titânio na solução de Ringer. A partir dos ensaios de tribocorrosão foi constatada a influência da velocidade e da carga aplicada, no fenômeno de tribocorrosão. Os resultados evidenciaram uma maior influência da velocidade no incremento da corrosão e da carga aplicada no incremento da sinergia, durante o desgaste tribocorrosivo.

Os métodos de simulação estocástica permitem acessar o espaço de incerteza associado à estimativa de atributos geológicos. Esse espaço de incerteza, obtido através da geração de múltiplos cenários equiprováveis, pode ser utilizado para análise de risco e tomadas de decisões, de acordo com alguma função de transferência utilizada. Os métodos de simulação sequencial são amplamente difundidos para a construção destes modelos. Simulação sequencial gaussiana requer que a variável original seja transformada em uma distribuição normal. O método de simulação sequencial direta não necessita de alguma transformação anterior a realização das simulações, permitindo simular diretamente dentro do espaço original dos dados. A metodologia apresentada, neste trabalho, irá abordar as principais diferenças destas duas metodologias de simulação sequencial comparando os resultados. Simulação sequencial Gaussiana tende a reproduzir melhor o histograma, enquanto simulação direta é mais facilmente implementada, pois não necessita de nenhuma transformação dos dados. Os métodos serão ilustrados através de um estudo de caso.

Este trabalho tem o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da incorporação de até 15% em peso de lama de alto forno proveniente de uma siderúrgica do estado do Pará, na massa argilosa composta de argila forte e argila fraca para a produção de telhas. O resíduo e as argilas, forte e fraca, foram beneficiados e tiveram sua composição química determinada por meio de fluorescência de Raios-X. Foram preparados corpos de prova por prensagem uniaxial a 20 Mpa para queima em forno de laboratório tipo mufla a 950oC. Foram avaliadas a absorção de água e o módulo de ruptura em flexão dos corpos queimados. Os resultados mostraram que a lama de alto forno é constituída predominantemente por compostos de ferro e que a incorporação de até 15% em peso pode melhorar as propriedades tecnológicas das cerâmicas queimadas.

No mercado de arames galvanizados destinados a indústria é exigida a uniformidade da camada de zinco sobre o arame. Neste trabalho, foram estudados os efeitos da velocidade de galvanização na uniformidade e espessura da camada de Zinco total, bem como a morfologia das fases de Zn e Ferro-Zinco sobre o substrato metálico. Verificou-se também o efeito do aquecimento após o processo de galvanização, observando o crescimento da camada intermetálica. Finalmente, serão mostradas as principais características de processo obtidas para garantir o atendimento aos ensaios de qualificação, em um estudo de caso de arames galvanizados produzidos em unidade industrial da Gerdau.

Development work on the use of plasma torches in blast furnace ironmaking was completed in the 1980s. The technology developers planned to reduce blast furnace coke consumption using electrical energy and large scale coal injection through the tuyeres. Since this time, Westinghouse Plasma Corporation has improved torch reliability with industrial experience in solid-waste-to-energy facilities, as well as metallurgical applications. As coke makes up one-third of the hot metal cost, savings efforts frequently seek to lower coke consumption by increasing process efficiency or replacing coke with cheaper fuels. Alter NRG and Hatch assessed the merits of using plasma torch technology to superheat the hot blast. Coke rate savings, electrical purchase requirements, and a financial analysis to implement the torches are presented.

Hot tensile data were correlated with creep data, in Aluminum Alloy AL7475-T7351, as part of a broader research program, aiming at the validation of a methodology that proposes an equivalence between the two kind of results, for metallic materials in general. The methodology is based on a criterion that establishes correlation among the following parameters from each test: the strain rate, ultimate tensile stress, and time to reach the ultimate tensile stress, in tensile tests, are equivalent respectively to the: minimum strain rate, applied stress and rupture time, in creep tests, for a given test temperature. The present material was tested at 3 temperatures: 133,166 and 193ºC, using 3 nominal tensile strain rates in the hot tensile tests: 3.2x10-6, 1.6x10-4 and 6.4x10-3 s-1 and 9 applied stress levels in the creep tests, varying from 140 to 400 MPa. The conversion of the hot tensile data to creep-like data allowed performing the analysis of all the results together according to the traditional creep relations proposed by different authors, namely: Norton, Arrhenius, Zener-Hollomon and Monkman-Grant, with the determination of the corresponding parameters in each case. The equivalence between hot tensile and creep data is also confirmed for this aluminum alloy.

Oolitic iron ores have significant economical importance because of their extensive resources in the world. However, their utilisation is often quite limited due to the high content of phosphorus inside. The phosphorus is often finely disseminated in the oolite structure and generally not liberated in the form of free particles. The iron ore used in this work is a typical oolitic goethitic iron ore with high phosphorus. The process of phosphorus removal from this ore is difficult because the phosphorus is not present as distinct minerals. As a result, no physical beneficiation process is able to separate the phosphorus from the iron bearing phases. The current concentrate contains low iron grade (Fe ~49%) and high phosphorus content (P 0.7~0.8%). The acid leaching is a potential way to dissolve phosphorus. Previous studies have shown that the thermal treatment makes the phosphorus more accessible for the acids and enables more efficient phosphorus dissolution. Some chemical additives are reported to enhance this phenomenon. A series of tests have been carried out using roasting - grinding - magnetic separation - leaching technologies to remove the phosphorus from this current concentrate. In the first stage, several tests were performed at pilot scale under the same conditions as described in some publications. The achieved results were similar to those from previous tests at laboratory scale. In the second stage, new test conditions were investigated in laboratory scale in order to achieve better result and to reduce the operational cost.

Durante 2017, a operação do AF#2 da Ternium Argentina exigiu alterações da basicidade binária em uma ampla faixa entre 2.0 a 2.7 e no teor de MgO. Esta faixa de trabalho motivou o estudo das propriedades metalúrgicas do sinter e sua interação com outros componentes materiais da carga do Alto-Forno. Além disso, foi testado e analisado a influência de duas qualidades diferentes de granulado. Para entender os efeitos da composição química, um conjunto de testes de redução-desintegração foram desenvolvidos. Aliando com perfis isotérmicos (ISO 4696-1), perfis variáveis de temperatura e composição de gás, com intuito de simular a redução no AF. As propriedades sob alta temperatura também foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de amolecimento e fusão, compondo a carga sinter, pelota e minério granulado. Utilizando amostras de sinter de diferentes basicidades e teores de MgO. Os resultados obtidos e sua influência no comportamento dos altos-fornos são analisados no presente trabalho.

Hydro generators installed in Itaipu Binacional power plant with 824/737 MVA rated output power (50/60 Hz) belong to the largest ones in the world. Among many unique features the generators are equipped with the largest hydrodynamic thrust bearings ever built (external diameter 5200 mm, axial load equals approximately 3600 t). This paper is an attempt to propose a new thrust bearing design with the use of the state-of-the-art technologies and simulation techniques that demonstrate a reduction of friction power losses generated by the thrust bearing. This paper is divided into two parts. Within the first one the original thrust bearing design which was implemented in the generators is described. Related calculation results based on a thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) calculation software used by Alstom will be presented. A comparison between measurement results gathered in the 1980’s is given. In the second part a potential solution of a more beneficial bearing design is described. The proposed thrust bearing design modification is an implementation of Alstom’s PolypadTM coating. This modern polymer (PEEK) coating material has already been used by Alstom in projects around the world for many years. This coating allows pushing the operating parameters limits toward higher temperatures and lower oil film thicknesses far beyond the limits known for the conventional bearing materials.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a influência causada pelo resíduo de Pedra Cariri após tratamento de calcinação em massas argilosas usadas para produzir tijolos de cerâmica vermelha, visando a melhoria e o barateamento dos produtos cerâmicos produzidos e mostrar outra alternativa de reciclagem desses resíduos. As matérias primas foram beneficiadas e formuladas em função do percentual de pedra cariri, caracterizadas por difração e Fluorescência de raios – X, conformadas, queimadas, sendo posteriormente submetidas a ensaio de flexão, absorção de agua, porosidade. A adição de resíduo propiciou o aumento do módulo de resistência à flexão, conforme maior temperatura. As análises de absorção de agua ficaram no limite e a porosidade diminuiu. A amostra de argila utilizada nesse trabalho demonstrou uma melhora em algumas propriedades devido a adição da pedra cariri calcinada, mostrando assim uma certa viabilidade para sua utilização na fabricação de tijolos de alvenaria, e seu uso sustentável é possível.

In the present paper, a new energy balance equation was developed, considering the slag phase, in order to define the effects of jet penetration and determine a new value for the factor K. The factor K measure the resistance to momentum transference between exit nozzle and metallic bath. The experiments were performed based on the same conditions of the article used as a comparison. The results showed the same behavior between the experiments and it was possible to determine a new value for the factor K, which changed from the unit order for the metal phase system to hundredths order for the metal and slag phase systems. These results are considered unprecedented.

One of the main reasons for blast furnace reline is the loss of refractory lining, particularly in the hearth and taphole regions. Intense operation of the blast furnace can result in extensive refractory wear and deterioration. This can then affect the continuity of the operation and the furnace campaign life. Novo-Lipetsk (NLMK) and Hatch developed a systematic approach to monitor the condition of blast furnace hearth linings using Acousto Ultrasonic-Echo (AU-E), a non-destructive testing system developed by Hatch. Continuous and periodic inspections of blast furnaces revealed areas with accelerated refractory deterioration, formation of elephant foot, extent and speed of refractory wear, as well as cracks and other anomalies. Improvement in coke quality, stave washing, the addition of titania, and other changes were recommended and implemented to prolong furnace life while maintaining the intensity of furnace operation. This paper demonstrates how the coordinated efforts between NLMK and Hatch resulted in prolonging the blast furnace campaign life.

Empilhadeiras são equipamentos essenciais na movimentação de cargas em praticamente qualquer ambiente industrial e devem receber atenção especial em caso de falhas, pois podem comprometer operações e colocar em risco a saúde e a segurança de colaboradores. Este trabalho apresenta uma análise de falha dos garfos de uma empilhadeira que romperam durante uma operação rotineira de levantamento de carga. Amostras dos garfos fraturados foram submetidas à análise química, análise macrográfica, micrografia óptica, análises de dureza e microdureza e ensaios de tração e impacto. Além disso, foram analisadas as tensões as quais os garfos estavam submetidos, considerando a carga levantada, a especificação do equipamento e análises de fadiga e de tenacidade à fratura. Dessa maneira foi possível identificar o material dos garfos, suas características e também de que maneira ocorreu a fratura, resultando em recomendações que possam prever e/ou evitar ocorrências desse tipo futuramente.

HSM can be divided into different groups such as Conventional HSM with Roughing stands and HSM without Roughing stands = Mills with just finishing stands. The roll requirements for different stands are quite different. In Roughing stands the temperature of the slab is very high. Therefore the resistance against thermal wear/fatigue is the most dominating factor. Today mostly Chrome Steel, Semi HSS and HSS rolls are applied. A comparison and evaluation of such rolls will be described. In the finishing mill the tendency/wish is to use HSS rolls in all the stands. The grade HSS is defined by at least a certain amount of carbide forming elements such as V, W, Mo, Nb etc. The matrix and other precipitations can be adjusted according to the need and situation in the mill. In the pre-finishing stands the HSS is already well introduced. In the last finishing stands the original HSS tended to stick and the cobble rate increased. New development decreased the problem and gave some very promising results. In the last finishing stands beside the high performance a higher resistance against incidents is needed. Solutions in this direction including e.g. residual stresses and special core material will be discussed. Proper testing and grinding procedures can avoid losses and reduce the TCO. Data sourcing and evaluation in regards of rolling and grinding is the key for the optimization of the TCO. Several examples and comparison between different applications will be given in detail and explained. Future possibilities will be discussed as well as results of latest trials in mills.

The effect of coiling temperature on selective oxidation behaviour of binary and ternary iron-based model alloys containing different contents of Si or Mn were investigated by SEM and SIMS. The experiments were carried out with a temperature ranging from 450 °C to 700 °C, under N2-5%H2 gas flow with a Dew Point of -3.3°C, for different durations. SEM images of binary iron-based model alloys revealed a decrease of grain boundary oxidation depth with increasing Silicon or Manganese content. At 530°C and 600°C SIMS results showed no Silicon diffusion toward surface, contrary to the results analyzed for Fe-x%Mn. Tests results and Wagner’s theory application (specific cases Fe-0.2%Si and Fe-0.5%Si) showed that grain boundary oxygen diffusion coefficient “DoGB” is almost 60 to 70 times faster than oxygen bulk diffusion coefficient. These results helped to broaden knowledge of single-element effects on grain boundary oxidation, in addition, will contribute of the future works in new steels with complex alloy compositions.

This paper call attention to increasing ratio of oxygen depletion from atmosphere besides the global worries about CO2 concentration increase in the atmosphere. It highlights the big mistake in considering Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS, as a way to reduce the increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. As a hypothetical example it presents an existing pseudo-ecosystem of manufacturing that has real windows of opportunity to increase its share in the global materials production industry, even in highly industrialized countries. As a suggestion and example the author point out possibilities to almost fulfill the proposed simple rules to be considered inside an ecosystem of manufacturing utilizing the production of steel via biomass versus fossil coal. A relevant and difficult rule to be attained in a quasi-ecosystem of manufacture is to be a near zero atmosphere oxygen depletion integrated process. The industrial alternatives that utilizes the actual photosynthesis are the ones that can reach a higher ecosystem of manufacture’s index. It is presented an ideal integrated steelmaking process where the gaseous, liquids and solid residues generated in one part of the system are or can be utilized in the other parts of the same system. A potential ecosystem of manufacture to produce primary iron is illustrated in the paper.

Increased worldwide highly competition in steel market imposes innovative measure for the steelmaker targeting cost reduction and climate-friendly steelmaking process in order to have the ability to withstand the pressure of the market. At the same time the demand for high purity and highest quality steels continues to grow from year to year, especially in the sector automotive in transportation of oil and gas, in the construction Industry and in the manufacture of heavy plate. As they allow producers to be up to the requirements while allowing expanding their product mix, new secondary metallurgical treatments have become a must additionally to standard equipment elements of steel plants modern. Most of these treatments occurs in the steel ladle increasing the pressure to ensure a reliable and as possible neutral reactor. Intelligent solutions for refractory lining ladles should integrate better adaptation to the operational process parameters and the high reliability/availability at the best cost/performance. This challenge has conducted Refratechnik to develop new concepts to overcome the frontier between shaped and unshaped materials and that’s what will be covered in this paper.

A siderurgia gera grandes volumes de escória de aciaria como coproduto e precisa incrementar o aproveitamento desse material em novos processos para evitar a disposição em aterros, aumentando a competitividade do setor. Este estudo tem como objetivo caracterizar a escória de aciaria LD da Usiminas em Ipatinga-MG, buscando avaliar o seu potencial para uso como corretivo agrícola e fonte de nutrientes para agricultura. Foram utilizadas técnicas analíticas tradicionais e microscopia para determinar suas principais características. Os resultados mostraram que uma etapa a mais de separação por peneira (2 mm) no processo rotineiro de remoção de metálicos é possível produzir um produto com características químicas e granulométricas estáveis para se constituir um corretivo agrícola comercial. O material apresenta características superiores aos corretivos tradicionais, pois além de corrigir o pH, fornece nutrientes importantes para a agricultura. O processo mais lento de hidratação dos silicatos e de liberação dos nutrientes pode ser interessante para o fornecimento progressivo desses compostos dando longevidade ao corretivo, reduzindo potencialmente o custo de aplicação.
