GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south.

THE results of a research and development lab- oratory and pilot-plant mineral-dressing investigation by the Bureau of Mines of the complex copper-lead-cobalt-nickel ores of southeast Missouri are reported in this paper. This investigation, in cooperation with the National Lead Co., showed that separate concentrates of lead, copper, and cobalt-nickel could be made by fine grinding and flotation. An industrial plant built subsequently by the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Div. near Fredericktown, Madison County, Mo., produced such concentrates during the war years. Present commercial production at the mill is limited to lead and copper concentrates, but research to permit economic utilization of the cobalt and nickel values is continuing.

GeophyGical prospecting by earth-resistivity methods is frequently applied to investigation of structural problems in geology. Fig. 1 indicates a scheme of the general arrangement used in these methods of measurements. The battery (or generator) E is connected with two "current electrodes" I1 and I2. The current of intensity J, supplied by this battery, passes through the earth between these elcc- trodes. A potential difference U will be measured between two other electrodes V1 and Vz, called "potential electrodes." During the past twenty years, and especially in the last decade, hydraulic cyclones have found increasing application in metallurgical processing as classifiers and, under special circumstances, as thickeners. To a more limited extent cyclones have been used to extend heavy, or dense, medium separation into the finer size ranges, and several attempts have been made to separate dispersions of immiscible liquids with a view to use in the field of liquid- liquid extraction. Before considering several aspects of conventional application, less conventional applications and some potential uses of modified cyclones, the mechanism of separation within a cyclone and the effect of the, major variables will he summarized.

The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. There have been some problems associated with hot coal, defined as oxidizing coal heating toward ignition temperature, in shipments from the US to overseas markets. This paper will provide, first, a brief review, together with a selective bibliography. Second, a thorough discussion of coal oxidation is covered. Third, potential effects of storage are presented and, lastly, methods are suggested for the safe storage and bulk transfer of coal. The scope includes coal storage for power plants.

.I. S. Huckaba (Western Machinery Co., Spokane, Wash.)—It has been my pleasure and privilege to be able to follow this work with the H.M.S. pilot plant very closely. This has been a very thorough and painstaking piece of work and will be of great value to the dense-media operators and manufacturers. Unfortunately time was not available to make an accurate comparison between this pilot plant and the commercial plant at Bellingham Coal Mines, both plants having Wemco drum separators. Briefly I would like to point out what I consider the most interesting finding of this work. Capacity: Very good results were obtained at a feed mte of 5.2 tons per hr in a 30-in diam by 24-in. long drum separator. The maximum capacity of this drum is not known but it is something over 5.2 tons per hr for the available area of 2.08 sq ft. During 1938 and 1939, an extensive series of geophysical surveys, employing both resistivity and magnetic methods, have been carried on in the Hawaiian Islands by the Section of Geophysics of the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Ground-Water of the Survey and the Division of Hydrography of the Territorial Government (see Fig. 1). During this time, surveys have been conducted on the islands of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui. Two distinct types of ground-water occurrence are being investigated: (1) The basal fresh-water lens floating on underlying salt water in obedience to the Ghyben-Herzberg principle (Fig. 2); and (2) perched ground-water (Fig. 3).

The rational exploitation of deposits for cement manufacture requires evaluation of the material, the planning of the quarrying and the right choice of quarry machinery. By using a computer for all evaluations and planning work the optimal recovery of material is arrived at and a quarry layout - and machinery is decided upon. The result will be uniform production throughout the lift of the deposits using a rationally chosen quarry equipment.

Conventional roof bolting may be giving ground to a new technique that utilizes only the ground itself to stabilize mine openings. This newly developed stress control technique (SCT) has initially been used in sedimentary ore bodies that are both overlain and underlain by weak strata. The technique is also suited to the design of production panels and main entry systems, and is readily adaptable to room and pillar as well as total- extraction mining, including both shortwall and longwall coal mining. In applications where the technique has been used, the requirements for roof bolting and floor renewal were virtually eliminated. The SCT comprises three basic methods and covers a wide range of problems associated with failing roofs and heaving floors in underground mines (see Table 1).
