It was observed for several bcc metal crystals that the Knoop hardness anisotropy was dependent essentially on the direction of the lung axis of the indentor alone and not on the plane of indentation. The generality of this observation was tested for an fcc md an hcp metal and an ionic crystal. For cubic crystals, this observation was valid; for the hcp structure, however, the planes of indentation did have an effect on the hardness anisotropy, although this was not nearly as significant as the direction of indentation. Because the direction of indentation is the only significant crystal-lographic parameter necessary to describe the hardness anisotropy, it is possible to represent the anisotropy of single crystals on the standard stereographic triangle. THE commonly observed1, 2 periodic variation of indentation hardness with crystallographic direction on the high-symmetry planes of various single crystals has been inadequately related to the physical or mechanical properties of the crystals examined. In fact, the hardness anisotropy curves for the various planes of a particular metal crystal, as is illustrated in Fig. 1, are uncorrelated and appear in the literature3, 4 as unrelated observations. Attempts to correlate hardness anisotropy curves with specific physical properties can be generally divided into either mechanistic or nonmechanistic approaches. A nonmechanistic approach would be to devise a mathematical expression that could describe the various hardness anisotropy curves. Such a relation could then be compared with the known anisotropy of various physical properties to determine which contribute to the observed hardness anisotropy. No such mathematical expression has been found in the literature.

THE data here given were obtained by 1500 tests made, by the United Verde Copper Co. to determine the most economical air pressure for the operation of hammer drills under the varying conditions of use, and to investigate the variation in drilling speed at different air pressures Twelve models of drills were used at gage pressures ranging from 40 to 130 lb. No effort was made to harmonize theory and practice; but rather to formulate empiric rules that would cover the. average variation of the results obtained. These rules on the performance of hammer drills, based on the air pressure as the main variable, however, are not necessarily of universal application, but they apparently satisfy the results obtained in this series of tests. The drilling conditions at this property vary widely; an average of twenty-one machine shifts to a 3-ft. (0.9-m.) round has been found necessary in some of the development work, while an, advance of 56. ft. has been made in seven shifts in the "oxide" ground. This range pre-eludes the adoption of one type of drill as a standard; consequently almost every kind of hammer drill sold in this country has been tested. At present, sixteen models are in use, of which two types of the heavy (150 to 160 lb.) mounted drills, one of the light mounted drill, one stoper, and two hand plugging drills are considered as standard.

A method is described for using radioactive tracer for the direct determination of ionic mobility in a molten electrolyte. Bolivia does not yet have any production which is being marketed. It does have a potential production, however, from wells which have been completed by the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. No other company is active in drilling and development work to date. The total potential production from wells now completed is about 6000 bbl, daily. Wells Completed Completions during 1928 and their initial daily productions. if any, were as follows: Camatindi No. 1, 350 to 1000 bbl.: Camiri No. 1, 500 bbl.; Sanandita No. 3, 100 bbl.; Tatarenda No. 1, dry hole, and Bermejo No. 2, deepened 50 ft. made 1000 barrels. The most striking development of the year was the Camiri No. 1 well which, after just entering the sand, made 500 bbl. per day of 52" B. oil. This well is the northernmost good producer which the Standard has brought in to date. Oil from this well is used without refining in the tractors and trucks of the company. A small topping plant has been installed from which high-grade gasoline is obtained for use in motor cars and some is being produced for the use of air plants stationed at Villa Montes. The results for Sanandita No. 13 were somewhat disappointing since Sanandita No. 2 was rated at about 3000 bbl. Tatarenda NO. 1, located on a large unbroken structure, was drilled to 4000 ft. and abandoned as a dry hole. Bermejo No. 2 was deepened 50 ft. to 2085 ft.. and on a 10-day test averaged 1000 bbl. per day. This well is on the border between Bolivia and the Argentine. Wells Drilling The wells drilling are Camiri No. 2, Sanandita No. 5, Machareti No. I and Bermejo No. 5. FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

THE pronounced and usually deleterious effects of sulphur on all ferrous metals and the resultant necessity for its control in metallurgical processes have stimulated many investigations of the system iron-sulphur. The data required for thermodynamic study of the behavior of sulphur in molten iron and steel include the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulphur and its heat of solution. Such data are also of theoretical interest since there is all too little information available concerning solutions of nonmetallic solutes in metallic solvents. It was the purpose of this investigation to attack the problem very directly by a study of equilibrium at several temperatures in the reaction H2 (gas) + S = H2S (gas) [1] K1 = PH2S /PH2 as where the sulphur is present in the liquid iron in amounts up to several percent by weight. Such a method of attack is not new since several careful studies have already been reported. It is planned, however, to extend the study to other metallic solvents and particularly to determine the effects of the various alloying elements on the activity of sulphur in liquid iron. This paper presents the results on molten iron-sulphur alloys containing up to 4 pct sulphur in the temperature range 1530°-1730°C. Various studies have estimated that for the next few decades, about half of all new power plants will be nuclear. The other half will be fueled with coal. Pending legislation on air pollution control would require all new coal-fueled power plants to install stack gas scrubbers or other technology to reduce sulfur oxide (SO,) emissions. These regulations would require flue gas desulfurization (FGD) or other technology for SO, reduction even on lower sulfur western coals. Among the options for FGD are single or dual alkali throw away processes using lime or limestone as the major reagent. These processes are currently more economically attractive than recovery processes, such as magnesium oxide and Wellman- Lord, that produce a salable product such as sulfur or sulfuric acid. One of the major problem areas with the throw away processes is disposal of the thrown away solid wastes, primarily calcium sulfite (CaSO3) and calcium sulfate (CaS04). Coal ash also must be disposed of, even if SOx reduction is not required. This paper addresses the alternatives for handling and disposal of throw away lime, limestone, and dual alkali process solid wastes. Advantages, disadvantages, and the economics of various methods are discussed. Both large central station power plants (500-1000 MW capacity) and smaller industrial power plants (up to 100 MW capacity) are considered. High sulfur eastern coals (53% S) and lower sulfur (3 1% S) western coals are considered.

THIS remarkable and well-known district lies about 320 miles south of Salt Lake City, in Washington County, near the Arizona border of the territory. It is now reached by the Utah Southern Railroad and its extension, and the last 100 miles are run by stages. These vehicles are called "jerkies" in the West, which name conveys a good idea of the comfort they afford, and the relief experienced when you alight. Arriving at Silver Reef, the main amp of the district, one sees at once that he stands where once a surging sen had its domain, marked now by heavy sandstone deposits of a red and white color. PRACTICAL or applied geophysics-as we designate the border region between physics and geophysics on one hand and practical geology on the other-has as its object the application of physical or geophysical methods of investigation to problems of practical geology. Its field of operation comprises all methods of physical measurement that are used in the problem of determining, from the geophysical influences of the subsoil that can be measured at the surface of the earth, the special characteristics of the association of strata, faults, etc., to detect the presence of deposits and to investigate underground structures. It therefore represents an aid, a physical method of research in practical geology, and is inseparably connected with geological studies; for this reason, it is also called geophysical prospecting. Formerly research methods of practical geology were based on observation exclusively: first, on the observation of the strata and formations at accessible parts of the surface of the earth, especially in shafts, borings and mines if such were available; then on the observation of the tectonic conditions in so far as these were already known at places directly visible; and finally, by estimation of the importance of formations of the terrane. Later, there were added in special cases, analytical chemical crystallo-graphical, petrographical and similar investigations of rock samples which were taken from the places under consideration. The knowledge thus obtained is of value and is expanded by hypotheses and constructions that are supported by geological theories of origin and by laws of the sequence of formations and rock systems, which are based on long experience.

SALT bodies in the form of rolls, horses (sometimes called horsebacks), folds, wants and pinches1 have been encountered while driving entries and mining out rooms during the development of the potash mines in New Mexico. Superficially these sporadic salt occurrences appear to be much alike, but closer examination reveals individual characteristics, and after four years of observation it seems possible to divide them into three general groups that may tentatively be called "depositional," "erosional," and "structural." The data collected are not yet sufficient to permit forecasts of their probable location, so that the annoyance of having to mine salt instead of potash could be avoided or lessened. However, the information so far available appears to throw some light on the occurrence of the sylvinite2 bed now being mined, and it is as a progress report that the writer presents the results of his observations. The mines of the United States Potash Co. and the Potash Company of America are about 20 miles northeast of Carlsbad, in Eddy County, N. M. They are on the southwestern flank of the Permian salt basin, which underlies western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southeastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. The cuttings from many oil wells and the cores from the potash tests drilled in this basin indicate that this salt series approached its greatest thick-ness (about 4000 ft.) in the southeastern part of New Mexico and the adjoining portions of Texas, and that the most advanced stages of

Continuous thickeners can be sized from previous experience, continuous pilot-scale test results, or batch settling tests. It is relatively simple to size full-scale thickeners when previous experience or pilot-scale operating data are available. But batch testing is often the only realistic method for sizing thickeners due to time restrictions, budget limitations, and availability of sample material. Many authors have, therefore, suggested means of running batch tests and analyzing the resulting data. Fundamental thickening theory began with the work of Coe and Clevenger (1916). In order to determine the size of the thickener settling area, they proposed that a series of batch settling tests be run at various initial concentrations. The solids handling capacity at each concentration can then be determined and the lowest capacity (maximum area requirements) used to size the thickener. Kynch (1952) developed a mathematical analysis in which the relationship between solids concentration and settling rate can be obtained from a single batch settling curve. In speaking of the economic geology of southeastern Ontario, W. G. Miller and C. W. Knight1 say that "there occurs in southeastern Ontario a variety of minerals and rocks of economic value, probably as great as in any district of like size on the North American continent. Some of these deposits, including marble and trap, are inexhaustible. Others, including talc and iron pyrites, have proved to be of considerable economic importance. From time to time, during the last 50 years, the following minerals and rocks have been mined or quarried with varying success: gold, iron pyrites, zinc blende, copper pyrites, galena, mispickel, magnetite, hematite, talc, actinolite, mica, marble, ophicalcite, feldspar, fluorite, apatite, corundum, graphite and sodalite. All of the economic materials, with, the exception of fluorite, appear to be of pre-Cambrian age. The fluorite veins penetrate the Ordovician, Black River, limestone." Accompanying that report was an article by the writer on the Queens-boro Pyrite Area which includes one of the two working pyrite properties in southeastern Ontario. In the present paper will be given a brief description2 of all the known pyrite deposits in the area which may at some time possess an economic value, with fuller descriptions of the two working mines—The Canadian Sulphur Ore C,o.'s mine near Queensboro, and the Nichols Chemical Co.'s property at Sulphide. DURING 1914 and 1915 extensive experiments were conducted at the concentrator of The Detroit Copper Mining Co. of Arizona, at Morenci, Ariz., in order to test the relative grinding efficiencies of the Marathon, the Chilean and the Hardinge Mills. The Marathon mill used in the experiments was the first one ever built by the manufacturers; and since this was the first time that it was given a thorough tryout, with such remarkable results, the data have been, assembled in the following paper and submitted in the interests of the milling profession.

During the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of " lime-roasting " of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,'and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art.

Direct Reduced Iron is a product obtained during solid state reduction of iron oxides into metallic iron. General chemical and physical characteristics of all direct reduced iron materials result in a noticeable reoxidation tendency and a relatively low ignition temperature. As most of the chemical reactions are exothermic, normally heating occurs and if water is present hydrogen evolves. Dry direct reduced iron deactivates quickly in air but is still reactive if it comes into contact with moisture. Because of these characteristics, special requirements are necessary for safe storage, shipment, and handling. In an effort to improve this situation passivation techniques were and still are being developed. The paper discusses the properties of direct reduced iron, presents past experience with storage, shipment, and handling of MIDREX® Iron, a direct reduced iron material produced in the MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process, and evaluates benefits derived from different passivation techniques.

In the course of a return flight from Olympia, Wash., to Laramie, Wyo., an airborne magnetometer profile was recorded continuously. The level of flight was controlled at barometric levels along segments of the flight. Barometric altitude was changed from 3000 ft to a maximum of 12,000 ft above mean sea level to take care of topographic variations. Terrain clearance varied from 800 to 7300 ft. Horizontal positions were obtained by recording and tying to cities, towns, airports, river crossings, and other landmarks in the course of the flight. Figs. 1-6 show the course of the flight and the general geologic and tectonic features traversed. The flight line begins south of Olympia, Wash., and proceeds south across the Puget-Willemette depression to the Columbia River. Thence it proceeds eastward along the Washington-Oregon border across the Cascade Mts. and lava flows and the Umatilla basin to Pendleton, Ore. From Pendleton it traverses the Blue Mts. uplift of Oregon in a southeasterly direction, and then to the Boise basin of southwestern Idaho. The flight line swings in an easterly direction as it passes over the Snake River downwarp to the south of the Idaho batholith. It then passes over the northern portion of the Great Basin and the heavily overthrust area at the intersection of the Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming borders. The flight then assumes an easterly course to cross the series of basins and uplifts of southern Wyoming and terminates near the western flank of the Laramie uplift.

Dubbed "Freeport's Mission Impossible" by the trade press, the company's Ertsberg mine in West Irian nevertheless shipped its first concentrates in December 1972, ahead of schedule. This is a new and great chapter in the history of Freeport Minerals Co. and its contractors. Exploration and construction were only possible by moving equipment and supplies by helicopters. This work was carried out by Petroleum Helicopters, Inc., of Lafayette, La. At the peak of operations six machines were in service manned by 11 pilots and supported by 10 mechanics. During the month of August, with work in full swing 1,604 tons were moved, including 3 DC-6 tractors requiring 18 trips each; flying hours for the month were 636.

CRUSHING has always been a major operation in the chemical and metallurgical industries, yet little is known about the theory of crushing, and today, the design of crushers is still based almost entirely on empirical knowledge and accumulated practical experience. In view of the increasing national need for the economic working of poorer grades of ores, the lack of a fundamental under- standing of this unit operation hardly presents a satisfactory situation. Basic investigations of crushing have been concerned mainly with three phases of the problem, 1-the mechanism of the fracture process itself, 2- the particle size distribution of the crushed product, and 3-the relationship between the energy input and the amount of new surface produced. Probably adequate information on these phases will be required for a comprehensive understanding of the process of crushing. A bibliography covering these phases will be given as well as a review of the work done in recent years at the University of Minnesota on the relationship between the energy input for crushing and the amount of new surface produced.
