THE Sullivan concentrator has completed 20 years of operation. During this period a considerable amount of data has been accumulated concerning the characteristics of several types of flotation machines in their application to the problem of the differential separation of the lead sulphide, zinc sulphide and, in more recent times, iron sulphide, in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is the author's intention to sketch briefly experiences encountered when the several types of flotation machines were introduced into the flow. ORIGINAL FLOTATION EQUIPMENT AND ORE The original flotation equipment consisted of four 18-cell lead-roughing machines, whose concentrate was cleaned in an 8-cell and recleaned in a similar 8-cell machine. Zinc concentration was carried out in four 18-cell machines. One 8-cell zinc re-treatment machine received the reground zinc middling. The 168 cells handled some 3000 tons of original daily feed. These cells were of the standard Minerals Separation type, equipped with 24-in. impellers. Spindles were driven through geared line shaft at a speed of 255 r.p.m. The impellers were the 45° type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling 90 per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent marmatite, 1 per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between 15 and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. SPECIAL FEATURES OF FLOTATION AT SULLIVAN Sullivan flotation differs greatly from customary practice. The very heavy return of lead rougher middling and lead cleaner tailing, totaling at times 125 per cent of the new feed tonnage, has been the subject of much investigation. The practice is still employed.

Theoretical calculations for the decline of pressure and the variation of instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio with increased cumulative production have been made for reservoir systems under various producing drawdown values and for various spacings. These variables have been included by a modification of previously Published techniques. This consists essentially of utilizing a radial system flowing gas and oil in a succession of steady state calculations. The results of the calculations do not show any variation in the predicted behavior of the internal gas drive reservoir when either the drawdown or the spacing are changed. The prediction of performance on an internal gas drive reservoir has been presented by various authors. ',"' These predictions are in the form of a pressure decline and an instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio as a function of cumulative oil withdrawal. In making these predictions a basic assumption has been that the saturation of the reservoir is uniform throughout at any time, or that the pressure differential imposed on the reservoir system is zero. Because of these assumptions the validity of such predictions has been questioned. Their application to actual systems, where saturations are not uniform and where producing differentials exist, has been a hazardous procedure. The authors cited have used different methods of approach to the derivation of equations for making their predictions and for arriving at a solution of both equations, but basically the same relationships are utilized in each case. In all instances the instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio is calculated from the equation: In utilizing this equation an average reservoir pressure and an average reservoir saturation must be known, the former to define ß, v, s, and uo/ug and the latter to define kg/ko. Predictions can be made, therefore, only for the conditions of a uniform reservoir saturation and a uniform reservoir pressure. This restriction of requiring a uniform oil saturation can be resolved by applying two-phase steady state flow for the radial system to the reservoir's history. All the tunneling machines discussed in this chapter are Calweld machines. I have divided the machines designed for soft-to-medium formations into three groups, correlated with typical formations and estimated compressive strengths: 1) Running sand and silt requiring blade cutters. 2) Chalk and clay, requiring drag-type cutters, for compressive strengths ranging from 0 to 2000 psi. 3) Sandstones, hard clays, and limestones, requiring disk cutters, for compressive strengths ranging from 2000 to 20,000 psi. All of the soft-to-medium-formation machines are powered by electric hydraulic or diesel hydraulic pumps. The pumps in turn drive hydraulic motors for the torque reaction. The soft-to-medium-formation machines are enclosed in a 360º shield with a cutting shoe, a center portion of the shield housing the mechanical equipment, and a tail shield. Tunnel supports are usually required, and the supports are normally erected in the tail shield. Our first machine was built in 1963, and all but five of the machines illustrated in the figures with this chapter were built in 1966 and 1967. Some of the machines manufactured will be discussed in the following sections; specific features as development has progressed will be pointed out. HARD-ROCK MACHINE The Calweld hard-rock machine has been designed along basic and accepted principles for a hard-rock mechanical borer. The features of this machine are as follows: 1) Direct electric motor drive through a planetary gear reduction ring and pinion gear, and then to the cutting head through a hollow drive shaft.

It is a well-known fact that under similar conditions a ton of pig iron can be made from any ore with less fuel when charcoal is used than when coke or anthracite is employed for heating. The cause of this superiority is entirely undiscovered, and no explanation has yet been offered which has won even temporary acceptance. Such as they are the hypotheses heretofore presented are of two general kinds, and they come from those two divisions of the working force which are so often antagonistic in all professions, the scientific and the practical men. The theory of the scientific men is drawn from the chemical reactions which are known to go on in the furnace, and it is well expressed in a recent paper by Prof. Akerman, of the Stockholm (Sweden) School of Mines. It makes the superiority of charcoal as a fuel in the blast furnace to depend upon its quick and thorough reduction of carbonic acid. This property belongs to charcoal in virtue of its porous structure. Its cells have a diameter of only one twenty-four hundredth of an inch, and one grain of charcoal has been computed to have a surface of two and four-tenths square feet. According to the theory in question, carbonic acid is formed by the first impact of the air upon the fuel; but in charcoal furnaces the acid is immediately reduced to oxide by taking the necessary amount of carbon into combination, and the gas reaches its highest reducing power even in the near vicinity of the tuyeres. Coke, being harder, does not produce so strong a reducing gas in that part of the furnace. Dissolution of a ferric oxide in acid solution is divided into two different types In the accelerated type dissolution proceeds in three stages 1) an inittal reaction during which the dissolved amount of oxide is nearly proportional to the cube root of time ; 2) an accelerated reaction: and 3) a final stage during which dissolution approaches completion. This course of dissolution gives an S-shaped curve in the above sequence OH a log weight percent of dissolved oxide against log time graph. In the parabolic type dissolution proceeds in four stages: first and second stages similar to those of the accelerated type; 3) parabolic-rate dissolution during which the dissolved amount of oxide is nearly proportional to the square root of time: and 4) a final stage. The effect of the kind of acid, the temperature of solution, and the concentration of acid was investigated. The results are discussed and a rate equation is proposed. AN attempt has been made to obtain some information on dissolution of a ferric oxide in various acid solutions. In view of hydrometallurgical processes the dissolution of ferric oxide is of less importance than that of zinc oxide or copper oxide in general. One of a few processes which intend to dissolve ferric oxide is an elimination of iron impurity from acid-insoluble materials. However, most leaching processes of oxide ores and cinders are accompanied with more or less dissolution of iron. According to Pryor and Evans1 the rate of dissolution of a ferric oxide in various acids decreased in the order of hydrofluoric acid > hydrochloric acid > sulfuric acid > perchloric acid. PRODUCTION statistics show that during the period of emergence from the depres¬sion the coal industry was becoming increasingly cognizant of the economic and competitive necessity for mechanizing. About 1935 many of its leaders were becoming aware also of the alarming scarcity of men properly trained to cope with the new problems of mechanization. In order to get a factual statement of this problem, a special AIME Coal Division Committee + was requested to survey the condition. Its investigation disclosed that graduates of mining schools going into coal mining numbered 16 in 1939 and 15 in 1938. With this as a background, Pittsburgh Coal Co. foresaw that a comprehensive program was necessary if it was to enlist the services of trained technical men, who were an indispensable part of a mechaniza¬tion program. The purpose of this paper is to review the program set up, to comment on the successes and failures and to outline the future course of action. SUMMER WORK An inescapable conclusion from the mechanization statistics was that the opportunities in coal mining were good. Not only was there a void in technical skill to fill from past years, but the ac¬celerating rate of mechanization indicated an increasing demand for technically trained men for the future. The remedy lay primarily in presenting facts con¬cerning the coal industry to the under¬graduate engineers before they made their professional occupational choice. Based on this idea, one of the key points in the program - was summer vacation work for the undergraduate, which, through the inducement of summer earnings, brought men into the mines to take a look at the prospects. This was more successful than statistics indicate because the war badly scrambled the orderly working of the program, but it could not obscure the value of a summer work program. A decided advantage was that it gave the company a preview of the graduate. An observation on this part of the program is that it is extremely hard to gauge lower classmen, and we found it wise to give them the benefit of the doubt, as the last two years in college bring about surprisingly rapid develop¬ment in some men. Comminution devices such as rod or ball mills are characteristically nonselective in their operation in that all material fed to a mill is ground to some extent. This is unfortunate when the object of comminution is liberation, for not only is energy expended in breaking pure gangue particles wasted, but, since gangue is frequently the predominant phase, the opportunity for such loss is great. Ideally, in this application a comminuting device should develop fracture only in locked particles. In the present investigation an attempt was made to use the large density difference which may exist between minerals to prevent comminution of one while grinding the other. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT The two minerals used in this work were -8-mesh galena and -8+ 20-mesh quartz. All tests were made on 2000-g charges containing 50 pct by weight of each mineral. Heavy media suspensions consisted of -100-mesh ferrosilicon in water. For grinding, a laboratory mill 10 in. diam by 12 in. long was filled to about 30 pct of its volume with either a ball or a rod charge. The balls ranged in size from 3/8 to 1 1/8 in. in diam; the rods ranged from 5/8 to 1 1/4 in. diam by 11 in. long. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In all tests employing heavy media, the ground pulps were treated as follows: 1) After recovering the ground charge from the mill but before drying, the pulp was wet screened on 200 mesh. 2) After drying the + 200-mesh product from step 1, the ferrosilicon was removed magnetically. 3) The nonmagnetic quartz and galena product from step 2 was sized on 10-mesh through 200-mesh screens. 4) The mineralogical composition of each screen fraction was determined by measuring its specific gravity. (communication to the Secretary): The importance of carbon in pig-iron, as well as the desirability of buying, for some purposes, irons which are high in carbon, has always been recognized. Mr. Summers, I think, has given undue weight to the carbon-determinations. The combined carbon often decreases materially as the center of the pig is approached, with a corresponding increase in the graphite. Even the determination of total carbon, to be of service, must he supplemented by that of other elements. By it alone, the softness of a foundry-iron cannot be determined. Car-wheels and No. 5 iron, for instance, frequently contain 3.75 per cent. of carbon. This is the percentage specified by Mr. Summers for his No. 1 iron, " with the silicon about anywhere the furnace-man wants it." It is true that, other things being equal, the higher the carbon the softer the iron for foundry-use. But to introduce any given percentages of graphitic and total carbon into a pig-iron specification would but make the specification more complicated, without increasing its value in a commensurate degree. Mr. Summers does not believe in the governing of mixtures by the silicon, and, in support of his views, gives several tables. It seems to me that both his conclusions and his tables are somewhat unsatisfactory. He comments on the irregularity in carbon, but fails to note the significance of the irregularity in silicon..The variation of 0.7 per cent. in silicon, for example, is too great to be accounted for by difference in blast. It might better be attributed to bad grading at the furnace, unsystematic sampling, or irregular charging. Deductions drawn under such conditions are of little value. During colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still functioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned prospects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investigate the validity of the reports. According to the reports of Baron Eschwege, he succeeded in extracting some 30,000 Oitavos (about 105 kg.) during the first few years, but the production costs exceeded the value of the gold obtained.

Nowhere in the world has cone classification in closed-circuit grinding with tube mills reached as high a state of development as on the Wit-watersrand. In the development of the Far East section the necessity of fine grinding to obtain satisfactory residues gave rise to a situation with which the cone could cope only at a great sacrifice in efficiency of tube-mill grinding. H. A. White1 recognized the limitation of the cone in his study of the theory of tube milling as early as 1915, but it was not until Ewing, Davis and Willey2 carried out their tests at Springs Mines during 1920 that the advantages of mechanical classifiers were demonstrated. During the fall of 1924 the writer supervised a series of tests with Dorr classifiers undertaken by Mr. White, Consulting Metallurgist, at the mill of the Geduld Proprietary Mines, Ltd., Dersley, Transvaal (Far East Rand). The importance of classification to obtain efficient tube-mill grinding was thoroughly demonstrated. The installation of classifiers of the above type that followed the test confirmed the results of the experimental work. Tests with Cones, Straight Type and Bowl Classifiers The test at the Geduld mill was made to determine the relative grinding efficiency of a tube mill when grinding in closed circuit with cones, straight type Dorr classifier and Dorr bowl classifier. The efficiency of a tube mill, as expressed in this article, is based on the tons of minus 200-mesh material produced by the mill. The efficiency is also expressed in terms of tons of minus 90-mesh material produced by the mills to correspond to the standard practice on the Witwatersrand. IN NOVEMBER 1933 I had the pleasure of receiving an autographed copy of a small brochure entitled "Birth of the Porphyry Coppers." The author, James Colquhoun, a distinguished British mining engineer, had been the dominant figure in the Arizona Copper Company, Limited, which, until its acquisition by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1921, had been the principal producer of copper in the Morenci district. In addition to the highly productive Humboldt and Longfellow mines it owned the Clay property, which, of course, has now become Arizona's No. 1 copper mine. Except for Utah Copper it is the premier Porphyry copper enterprise in the United States. Mr. Colquhoun's little volume was inspired by THE PORPHYRY COPPERS which had appeared early that year. In a most courteous and friendly way he adduces data to show that "we (Arizona Copper Company Limited) were successfully treating low-grade porphyry ores in quantity for at least four years (1901 to 19W) before the Utah Copper Company did anything at all." This last remark is based on the figures in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS showing that Utah's first production came from the Copperton pilot plant in 1905. Mr. Colquhoun traces the story of Morenci beginning in 1883 when he first arrived there. He tells how the rich self-fluxing ores (containing lime- stone, silica, and iron in proportion to permit direct smelting to produce black copper) were gradually exhausted. High-grade siliceous ore could be mixed in limited quantity with the self-fluxing ores; and oxidized ores were leached to contribute substantially to the production of the district. But

GRAVITY surveying with the torsion balance or the pendulum for ore prospecting purposes has generally not been considered practical or even possible. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensi-tive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal-roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instru-ment is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods.

The molybdenite deposits at Climax, Colo., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 141/2 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. The climatic conditions are severe, and snow can be expected during any month of the year. Winter sets in not later than Nov. 1, the snowfall is very heavy, and the ground remains covered with snow until June 1, and sometimes even later. From June 1 to Oct. 1, there is much rain and a little snow falls in the late afternoon nearly every day. In October, 1917, there was one of the biggest snowstorms and blizzards of the year. Being just on the divide, constant strong winds blow the fine, dry snow with such force that, during most of the winter, outside work of any kind is accomplished under most trying conditions. Within a few miles of Climax, some of the richest gold placers of Colorado occur. One of them, McNulty Gulch, was just across on the northeastern flank of Bartlett mountain. This mountain, therefore, was well prospected, and the presence of a bluish mineral and a yellowish one resembling sulfur was known to the old prospectors. They thought for many years that the blue mineral was graphite, and it is difficult to say when it first became definitely known that it was molybdenite. Claims had been staked as early as 1896, but it is evident that the prospectors at that time were looking for gold. In 1902, several claims were acquired by H. Leal, who drove a tunnel about 900 ft. (274 m.) long, probably to intersect a fault, which shows on the surface, and was thought to be a possible gold carrier. Gold was not found in paying quantities, but throughout its length the tunnel passed through a fractured silicified granite, showing a fairly uniform distribution of a fine-grained bluish mineral, which was finally determined as molybdenite. Relatively few data have been collected on the rates of diffusion in ternary solid solution systems. In general it does not seem worth while to gather extensive data for such systems until the factors that determine the rates of diffusion in binary systems are better understood. But the rates of diffusion in a ternary system of limited solid solubility, in which the terminal solid solution is in equilibrium with an intermediate phase and may thus be represented as a quasibinary system, represents a case of special interest. In this case, where by reason of the association of the two solute metals in an intermediate phase a special attraction of the two solute atoms may be safely assumed, some interaction of these atoms during simultaneous diffusion in the solvent lattice might be expected. It has frequently been proposed that molecular solid solutions exist in quasibinary and in other ternary (and binary) solid solutions. There is no direct evidence for such solid solutions; arguments based upon the supposed anomaly in certain physical properties1 are hardly important; unexpected density relationships have proved deceptive;2 suggestions of molecular solid solutions have been made on the basis of solution laws in their application to certain systems, but without result;3 attempts to find lattice parameters in the solid solution Al-MgZnz, which cannot be calculated from the separate effects of magnesium and zinc and might therefore be taken as evidence for a molecular aggregation, have given negative results.* Fundamentally, methods for the determination of the state of molecular aggregation in solution depend upon the kinetic behavior of the particles constituting the system. If it could be shown that the two solutes in a quasibinary ternary system diffuse in molecular proportions, despite a radical difference in the separate rates of diffusion of each solute when diffusing alone in the solvent lattice, some basis for the concept of molecular solid solution would be afforded. Manganese-ores are known to exist in the Caucasus in a number of localities, viz., in the government of Kutais, near the village of Chiaturi; in the same goverilment near the Choruk river, southward from Batum; and in the governments of Erivan and Tiflis. In smaller quantities they are found in various other places also. The first-mentioned deposits are by far the most important; the others being not only less extensive, but remote from present means of communication, and, from their character, expensive to work, although in some cases the ore is of a superior quality. All the manganese-ore now known in the market as a Caucasian " ore comes from Chiaturi, no other deposits in the Caucasus having been worked commercially; movements have been made, however, towards the exploitat,ion of some of those on the Choruk river. The Manganese-Ore District of Chiaturi. General Remarks, Statistics, Etc.—No other known deposit of manganese-ore can approach that of Chiaturi in capacity for producing large quantities of high-grade ore at a low cost. The deposit is said to have been discovered in 1848, by the geologist Abich, but the first shipments were not made until 1879, when 871 tons* were produced. Since that time, the production has steadily increased, until now the world relies on this deposit for about one-half its supply of manganese-ore. The industry is also of great importance locally, and aftords a livelihood to a considerable proportion of the population of the district in which the deposit is situated.

The safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because- the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must. pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. his fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossmentin earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

The year 1936 in Illinois was marked by considerably increased activity in drilling, both wildcat and proved territory, in leasing, and in seismic and geologic exploration. Of the 92 oil and gas wells completed during 1936 in Illinois, 49 were oil wells, 3 were gas wells and 40 were dry holes. This compares with but 34 completions in 1935. The total of the daily initial productions of the new oil wells was 1755 bbl., or an average of 36 bbl. per well. One new field was discovered, the Bartelso field in Clinton County. The leasing of some large blocks of acreage in Clay, Marion, and other counties by the Carter Oil Co. in the late fall of 1935 was followed in 1936 by extensive leasing in southern Illinois by 10 major companies and many smaller companies and individuals. It is estimated that 2½ million acres were under lease by the end of 1936. Seismograph surveying has been carried on by about seven companies, and the number of seismograph parties operating in Illinois has varied from six to eight throughout most of 1936. It is estimated that approximately two million dollars has been spent in the state in seismic and geologic exploration and in leasing during the last quarter of 1935 and all of 1936. ARTHUR KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬On p. 2275 I find a quotation from Mr. Thompson regarding the fountains of the Baku field. I have seen a large number of these gushers or fountains. In every case where unusual amounts of sand were produced the wells caved in and shut off in a few clays and were an absolute loss Very often the formation had caved so far up as to allow the water to enter the oil strata, and not only was the well lost but the ground for many acres around the well was useless for drilling purposes because the disturbed ground had allowed the gas and oil to dissipate and the water to enter. On p. 2268, Mr. Thompson is again quoted regarding the Balakhany field. If the text is consulted further, it will be found that the oil at Balakhany is heavy only in contradistinction to the Bibi Eibat, field. The gravity of the oil at Balakhany is from 28 to 32. Also, it must be noted that the illustration is taken from the conditions in the older part of the field. This field was first chilled 40 years ago, and was a worn-out field 15 years ago. The wells which produce sand are wells in which the casings are practically gone and the formations are full of water. The sand must be bailed from these wells because the clays from the upper stratum have caved into the wells and are obstructing the passage of oil. On p. 2262 is the statement that the Russian wells cannot be pumped on account of the large amounts of free sand produced. They have never tried pumping in the Baku field to any extent. Wherever tried, it has proven a great success. If we take the author's theories as correct and wish to put them into practice, it would first be necessary to consider a few figures. Let us assume that we produce oil and sand together in the proportion in which they exist in the productive strata. It is not uncommon to have wells in the California field which are not gushers, but which, by pumping, produce 1,000 bbl. per clay the first 100 clays.

FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gan-gue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective miner-als; and as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface proper-ties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

THERE is very little useful material in the litera-ture on the construction of manometers, so each experimenter must devise his own instrument. I have experimented for a number of years and have finally built one that is satisfactory. If we are to obtain accurate friction factors in mine-ventilation problems we must use accurate instruments. The most simple and convenient instrument for the mea-surement of small pressures is the inclined manometer or U-tube. By changing the angle at which the tube is set, any desired magnification of the pressure reading may be obtained. The first question in regard to the manometer is: What liquid shall be used? Alcohol, in my opinion, is the best. It does not cling to the glass and it does not attack the rubber tubes. The next problem is the setting of the instrument at the proper angle. One method is illustrated in Fig. 1. The base plate AC is made horizontal by a level bubble. The plate AB, which carries the U-tube, is hinged at A. The angle z which AB makes with the horizontal may be made any value by pinning the end B at the calculated position on the arm CD. Such an instrument may be designed to read directly in inches of water if a liquid of constant specific gravity is used. If the specific gravity varies, a calculation is necessary to convert the reading into inches of water.
