The following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests— which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of MechanicalEngineers—has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question; and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the'producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. The mining district and the town of Tombstone are situated in Cochise County, Arizona Territory, at the northwest end of the Mule Pass range of mountains, in longitude 110°, and latitude about 31 40' N,, upon the right bank of the San Pedro River, from which the town is distant 9 miles east.. It is also 24 miles south of Benson station on the Southern Pacific Railroad of Arizona, and about 40 miles north of the Mexican line. Its altitude above the sen is 4600 feet. The Dragoon Mountains rise across a valley to the northeast, and the Huachuca Range similarly upon the southwest. The country is open, without timber, and the surface, where the mines are opened, is in general gently rolling, and accessible to wagons by. natural roads. The first locations were made in the pear 1878 by the Scheffelin brothers and Richard Gird, the latter being well known among the pioneers of Arizona as a surveyor and miner, who contributed largely to our knowledge of the geography of the Territory in early days,

In any discussion of steel pouring too often refractories quality assumes a high level of importance. Unfortunately when one considers the many and varied conditions to which pouring refractories are exposed, it is difficult to isolate the true role of refractories quality alone. Some of the more important, yet often overlooked, variable conditions bearing on pouring performance are heat size, tap time and temperature, steel chemistry, ladle additions, ladle height and preheat, mechanical conditions of the pouring mechanism, hot top or non hot topped ingots and, ingot size, which determine total number of shutoffs, direct or tundish pouring, ingot filling rates, metallurgical demands, etc, etc. These considerations apply for either conventional or slide gate pouring of ingots and, to a large extent, even strand casting. In any event probably the most significant factor on pouring performance in any individual shop is what is considered an "OK" pour. We find considerable variance in this qualification, not only between Republic Steel meltshops, but throughout the industry. Therefore, it is a worthless exercise to draw comparisons attributable to refractories quality alone, except for similar conditions in a single shop.

Heine's " blue test" for copper, as described by the authorities generally, calls for a set of standard colors; and there has been some discussion concerning the relative superiority, for this purpose, of sulphate and nitrate solutions. The whole matter evidently hinges on the preservation of the standard colors in well-stoppered bottles. The apparatus described by Q. L. Heath* cannot be much improved, when very accurate readings are required. The following method was devised for the purpose of doing away with preserved sets of standard colors, by making a fresh standard for each batch of assays. The solutions are prepared in the usual way, each ammoniacal solution being filtered into its separate bottle, and then filled up to the containing-mark and thoroughly mixed. A similar color-bottle, with an " S " etched upon it, to distinguish it from the other bottles, which are numbered to correspond with the samples, is kept to run the standard. About 150 C.C. of water is put into it, and then the amount of acid (sulphuric or nitric) present in each determination, followed by 30 C.C. of ammonia (s. g. 0.90), which should make the mixture strongly ammoniacal. The liquid is now made up almost to the containing-mark (200 c.c.), say within 1 C.C. The lowest assay is selected first and placed alongside the standard, which, at the beginning, contains no copper. A copper-solution is then dropped into the standard from a burette ; and after each addition the bottle is well shaken and compared with the assay-sample. This operation is repeated until the two shades match exactly, when the burette is read and the assay-result is calculated. The assay next in order of depth of color is now taken and treated in the same way, and so on, until the batch is completed. It

The use of the verb in this mood is not as common as formerly: at the time, for example, when the Bible was translated and the plays of Shakespeare were written. Nevertheless it is an essential part of literary English. In editing the 'Mining and Scientific Press' I do not insist upon the use of the subjunctive in articles that are contributed from the outside, but it is deemed proper in all our editorial writing. To speak plainly, the subjunctive is a mark of scholarship; it is ignored by those that are not particular in such matters, and unfortunately it is a source of perplexity to many that are entirely unfamiliar with the use of it. Therefore, as an editor, I think it well to allow the indicative mood to be used by contributors in sentences in which, to be strictly correct, the verbs should be in the subjunctive mood. The fact that most subjunctives are indistinguishable in form from indicatives is another cause of trouble to the uninitiated.* For example, the verbs in such phrases as "Suffice it to say", '(So help me God ", and "God save the King" are in the subjunctive. One reason why the subjunctive is becoming uncommon is the growing habit of expressing the subjunctive meaning by aid of auxiliary verbs that are coupled with the infinitive; thus: "It will sate to say" and "May God save the King". The subjunctive is common in subordinate clauses, and that is how it obtained its name, 'subjunctive', meaning

In any open pit, some slope instability can be expected, varying from bench sloughing to large-scale slope movement. Major slope displacements are preceded by small, but measurable, displacements and by other indicators of instability, such as tension cracks, rock noise, and changes in groundwater levels. A comprehensive monitoring pro- gram, capable of measuring and assimilating displacement related data, is essential for sound pit operation. The objectives of a pit slope monitoring program are 1) to maintain safe operational procedures for the protection of personnel and equipment; 2) to provide advance notice of instability so that mine plans can be modified to minimize the impact of slope displacement; and 3) to provide geotechnical information for analyzing the slope failure mechanism, for designing appropriate remedial measures, and for conducting future re-design of the slope. Surface displacement measurement using conventional survey equipment and extensometers has been the most widely used method, and it is still the most cost-effective. Tiltmeters and borehole inclinometers are also useful tools, and there are promising developments in micro- seismic monitoring. A monitoring system should have redundancy in both type and number of measurements, and be capable of rapid and effective dissemination of displacement information to those affected.

1. Introductory Remarks.—The Haile Gold Mine is in Lancaster county, South Carolina, 3 1/2 miles east of Kershaw station on the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railway. It was first opened about, the year 1832, and since that time has passed through various fortunes. Many different operations have been practiced here for extracting the gold : panning, grinding in Chilian mills or arrastras, stamping, the Designolle process, dry-crushing, and finally the Thies process of barrel-chlorination, which has now been in successful use for 2 1/2 years, and by which 36,000 tons of ore have been treated profitably. The Thies process is in brief the treatment of dead-roasted auriferous concentrates (pyrite, sometimes also chalcopyrite, as at the Phœnix mine, Cabarrus Co., N. C.) with nascent chlorine, without ' artificial pressure or exhaust, in lead-lined iron cylinders; the throw-

J. L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-If a nickel anode is cast under commer-cial conditions, will it contain nickel oxide? Will the nickel oxide affect the rate of corrosion in a double sulfate solution; or will the nickel oxide dissolve in a double sulfate solution? I would also like to ask whether a 98 per cent. pure nickel anode will corrode as fast as a 96 per cent. nickel anode; whether electrolytic nickel will corrode less rapidly than nickel containing a small amount of carbon; and whether the materials some-times used in coating molds for casting nickel anodes will affect the rate of corrosion of the anode? In other words, whether an electrically non conducting coating is likely to be present that will prevent the nickel anode from corroding rapidly. JOHN F. THOMPSON.-The nickel oxide will not dissolve in the double sulfate solution, as far as we know. We do not make the ordinary nickel anode of commerce, but we supply nickel to the nickel anode makers. Those makers almost invariably buy a high-carbon nickel shot, ranging around 0.45 per cent. carbon. In their process, they even further, car-burize it so as to get nickel that will melt easily and be fluid enough to fill the mold, so that the ordinary cast anode on the market is unquestion-ably oxide free. The only time that such an anode will have oxide will be through an error in melting. Some cupola makers of anodes have had trouble with oxidation, but as a rule the anodes are thoroughly carburized; so much so that they probably carry a couple of per cent. of carbon of which around. 1.6 per cent. is graphite.

The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids. The brief contribution of Mr. West* furnishes a text for the present paper, which will, however, take a wider range, warranted by the writer's somewhat unusual opportunities for the study of the practice of the foundry as well as the blast-furnace, and especially of the production of satisfactory castings from iron of a composition altogether unsuitable, in the opinion of the average foundryman, for that purpose. Mr. West has observed that plates cast from direct-metal of a certain composition could be planed, whereas this would have been impracticable with cupola-metal of like composition; that furnace-metal has more " life " (i. e., fluidity, or a higher temperature) than cupola-metal; that it throws out much " kish," etc. And he suggests that blast-furnace managers may throw further light on the greater softness of direct-metal castings. Perhaps such light may be furnished to some extent by the present paper. The difference between cupola-metal and furnace- or direct-metal is, first of all, in the lower average sulphur-content of the latter. It has been proved by experiment that iron increases in its content of sulphur to a considerable extent with each remelting. Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 12.50 mj/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 m or more as far as 1500 m from the mine. No wells have yet become nonproductive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures of ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand,

THE increased service demands on some of the products of the National Malleable Castings Co. prompted it about eight years ago to investigate the electric furnace, both in America and in Europe. The process bad' already been sufficiently developed in Europe to lead us to believe that the electric furnace would most nearly meet our requirements. After further investigation and consultation with the highest authorities on the subject, we decided upon the Heroult type as the simplest and most practicable. In 1910, we built a furnace of this type, of 300 lb. capacity, for experimental purposes, and although it was crudely constructed the quality of the material we were able to make justified the installation of a 6-ton Heroult furnace in 1912. This furnace has three electrodes, 17 in. in diameter, uses three-phase, 60-cycle current, and is equipped with Thury regulators, which give us good regulation and a uniform load on the line even when cold melting. The power factor of the furnace is 94 per cent. Since July, 1912, the furnace has been in continuous operation, producing up to the present time, over 20,000 tons of both carbon and alloy steels of varying analyses and of exceptional quality. Both cold-and hot-metal charges have been used, with a power consumption of about 150 kw-hr. per ton in the case of hot-metal charges and from 500 to 600 kw-hr. per ton in the case of cold charges. The electric energy consumed varies according to the final analysis of the steel and the amount of refining required. Too much cannot be said about the refining possibilities of the electric furnace, for no other method of steel manufacture can compete with the electric in this respect.

Many a geologist or driller has wished he could somehow climb into a borehole to see for himself what fractures looked like. Or why recovery was poor. Or how the bit was actually lost. Now it is possible to do the next best thing to climbing into the hole. TV cameras are being used for a close-up look at borehole conditions. Ever since television was invented, geologists and others interested in subsurface conditions have wanted a TV camera that could be used in the narrow confines of a borehole. But development of such a camera was slow, mainly because of the need for compact size. Not until the late 1950's did the technology of electronic miniaturization develop to a point where a camera satisfactory for the purpose could be put together.

All acid mine drain waters, regardless of source, share certain characteristics; but they do differ in exact chemical composition, degree of acidity, and total solids content. Any serious program to treat such waters must recognize these differences and apply to each specific case the technique which offers the best promise of each specific case the technique which offers the best promise of technical and economic success. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Mines and Mineral Industries has originated and funded studies of many different treatment means. Neutralization with lime is now being used on 200 different polluted streams in Pennsylvania, and multistage flash evaporation has been selected for a particularly large and troublesome outfall near Wilkes-Barre, Pa. A 5 x 106 gpd plant for this latter site is now being designed by Westinghouse Electric Corp. which developed a concentration process based on multistage flash evaporation as part of the State's research program.

The two-phase distributed-parameter kinetic model for flotation has been wed as the basis for a digital simulation of flotation plants of arbitrary configuration. Ores that contain any number of minerals can be handled. The effects of incomplete liberation and particle-size distribution are specifically allowed for. The simulator allows the investigation of variations in throughput and in the slurry density of the feed, and of variations in stage volumes and aeration rates. It can handle cell behavior even under conditions of hindered flotation. The requirements for data preparation are completely documented so that the computer program is suitable for general-purpose use. The program is written in Fortran. The output from the simulator consists of the complete material flows in the plant, as well as the grade, recovery, and particle-size distribution in each stream.

In the concentrator of Kamioka Mine, lead-zinc bulk differential flotation is practiced. It results in three kinds of thickener over- flow, namely; tailing, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate, which are discharged as wastewater. Since these three kinds of overflow differ from each other in water quality, they are separately recycled to appropriate processes based on their water quality. The tailing and the lead concentrate thickener overflow are directly recycled to their respective suitable processes. However, as the zinc thickener overflow contains Cu(CN)3--, ZnS, CdS, CN-, xanthate and frother, the total zinc thickener overflow cannot be recycled at one time to any one process without creating harmful effects. Consequently, all the ingredients in the zinc thickener overflow other than CN- are floated by Ion-Precipitate-Ultrafine-particle flotation, using Nagahm flotation machine. After this treatment, the zinc thickener overflow, containing only CN-, is effectively recycled to the lead-zinc differential flotation circuit. Thus the integrated recycling of waste-water greatly reduces environmental problems, and in addition it generates a sizeable profit by improving overall mill recovery, and permitting the reduction of reagent consumption.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic indus-tries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. INTRODUCTION The overall importance of the minerals industry during the next 20 years was highlighted In "The Global 200 Report to the President" (Barney, 1982) in the following terms: "The industrial and agricultural processes that are taken for granted today would be severely disrupted of any one of dozens of critical minerals ceased to be available in dependable, reasonably priced supply. Supply in turn has become highly energy intensive and international In scope ...... because resources are not uniformly distributed geographically, political considerations (also) become an Important determinant of price and trade patterns." In attempting to determine Australia’s contribution of bauxite raw materials to the world of the future, this paper necessarily also concerns itself with the alumina and aluminium industry to which it supplles the raw material. It is an industry which is energy intensive, International in scope and heavily influenced by political considerations. The aluminium industry has shown a remarkably rapid growth during the past 20 years (Fig. 1).
