Continued discussion of the paper Of ROSWELL H. JOHNSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1015, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February; 1915, pp. 221 to 226. (communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Johnson recognizes that connate waters must be driven, outward toward the earth's surface. He considers the ascent due to the settling and packing of the underlying sediments and to the formation of gas within the rocks, supplemented by abyssal pressures. The origin of the methane in the sedimentary strata probably is not simple. There are three possible modes of origin: (1) as marsh gas formed near the surface and entrapped in the sediments; (2) from abyssal sources; (3) by the decomposition of organic matter buried in the sediments. The abyssal source is generally negligible, and in all cases doubtful. The third origin is the most important in the gas fields. A fourth mode of origin, by the dissociation of liquid hydrocarbons, frequently has been suggested, but it is improbable, because crude oils are exothermic. Therefore they have no tendency, to split or decompose at low temperatures, as do endothermic substances, such as coal, which is geologically by the loss of methane, water, and carbon dioxide. This cannot happen to a hydrocarbon until its temperature of dissociation (" cracking point") is reached, which is over 250'.C. for the most easily cracked hydrocarbons and over 400° C. for others. Engler says that the dissociation of fats and waxes into oils is an endothermic process, thereby unconsciously nullifying his own theory of the dissociation of these substances at low temperatures. However, recently I have found reason to think that heat is liberated by the disruption of the molecules of fats and waxes, as it is in the molecular decomposition of the substances of wood, coal, etc. If this tentative opinion is correct, and Engler wrong, then it seems that the Engler-Höfer hypothesis of the origin of oil becomes not only possible, but even probable.

" Whether an iron-ore should be roasted is a question which very seldom arises ; at least, this question seldom ought to arise. With the exception of the red impalpable oxide, the whole series of ironores require roasting—even the specular iron-ore, if it is very compact—but the best oxide, if too compact, works badly in the furnace. All other ores should be subjected to calcination. Some ironmasters are in the habit of using the hydrates raw, but this should riot be done where clay-ores are smelted or where the hydrates contain either chlorides or phosphates. But in the latter case, the pig metal will be cold-short if there is too much phosphorus. Under all circumstances, however, it is best to roast the ores if we expect good metal and well-regulated furnace operations. " The object of roasting ores is to produce higher oxidation and to expel injurious admixtures. In both cases liberal access of atmospheric air is required ; we should, therefore, so arrange our roasting operations as to fulfil these conditions, from which it will appear that different ores require different treatment."* The above may be considered an extreme, and perhaps erroneous view; but there is no question as to the absence of a general appreciation concerning the value of preparing ores of iron for smelting in the blast-furnace.

The following correspondence relating to a paper bearing the above title, presented by J. F. Wolff, at the New York meeting in February, 1917, and published in the Transactions, Volume LVI, page 142, has passed between the author of the paper, and Mr. Anson G. Betts, and is interesting, although it was received much too late for incorporation in its proper place in Volume LVI. ANSON CT. BETTS, Asheville, N. C.-1. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff if he finds-from analysis of the iron formation and of the iron ore, and from the relative amounts of each in each unit area of the formation, unleached and after leaching, that the iron remains entirely insoluble and the total quantity still remains present; or whether he finds that some of the iron is removed, or possibly even added by deposition from the water passing through the formation. 2. The water that passed into the iron formation had to go somewhere; was it absorbed by underlying formations through hydration, or, after passing through the ore formation, did it come to the surface in springs at a lower elevation, or how did it escape from the ground? 3. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff whether he finds that the iron formation in the sedimentary series does not, come next to the quartzites and generally between the quartzites and slates. J. F. In common with others, you appear to have some hesitancy in accepting the fact of the removal, by solution, of the enormous quantity of silica which has been leached out of portions of the Biwabik iron formation, thus forming orebodies of merchantable iron ore. I believe that even Dr. Waldemar Lindgren once hesitated to accept this fact. However, the evidence is so simple and absolutely conclusive that the fact is established beyond all question. At the contact of orebodies with their rock walls, the bands of iron ore in the orebody can be seen in contact with the corresponding bands of original iron oxide in the rock wall, and the chert layers in the rock wall can be seen to give place to fine granular material (fine silica and iron oxide) and pore space. This is especially noticeable where slumping at the rock walls his not been so great as to displace the layers in the orebody from their contact with their corresponding layers in the rock wall.

THE coercimeter, as its name implies, is an instrument for measuring the coercive force[+] of magnetic substances. It was developed by Davis and Hartenheim in the Special Studies Section, Metallurgical Division. A detailed description of this apparatus may be found elsewhere.2 The coercive force determinations of magnetic materials are interesting because of the relationship established by Gottschalk,4 who showed a linear relationship between the magnetization coercive force and the specific surface of comminuted particles. The value of this relationship in determining grinding efficiency has been shown by Dean.3 The determination of the surface contained in the subsieve sizes has always been a difficult problem for investigators. They made approximate measurements of the surface of coarse materials by sizing on screens, but for the determination of the surface of the sub- sieve sizes it was necessary to make detailed grain counts or elutriation tests, or to study dissolution rates. The technical literature contains many references to other methods for determining these surfaces, either by some special apparatus or by mathematical calculations based on distribution lines. Many of the methods are long and tedious, and the results of some, at least, are questionable. The turbidimeter gives quick results on ground cement. By using magnetite as the material to be ground, a simple determination of its coercive force by the coercimeter, requiring 10 minutes or less, can be transposed directly and accurately into units of relative surface. This subject has been pursued further by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and the following is a description of the results.

At the beginning of the 1960's, the Hannoversche Portland-Cementfabrik A. G. needed to open a new quarry. The land on which this quarry was to be developed was completely flat and separated from the existing quarry by a navigable canal. The area had been exploration-drilled previously, so that enough reliable data on the chemical properties of the deposit were available. From the geologic point of view, the deposit under a very moist surface belongs to the Turon (Upper Chalk) formation, soft on the surface and medium to very hard farther down. Between the 15% sloping banks of chalk (with a calcium carbonate content of 75 to 90% and running from west to east), there are numerous beds, up to 3 m deep, which are rich in alumina and iron oxide but contain only 50 to 60% CaCO3. In the old quarry-worked conventionally by deep-hole drilling, a 2-cu-m shovel, and 900-mm track with 6-cu-m dump cars-an adequate and modern crushing plant was available. The plant crushed the moist material (11 to 13% H2O content) down to 0 to 50 mm. INSTALLATION OF ORIGINAL MOBILE CRUSHER It was decided to employ a mobile crushing unit in the new quarry; the moist and soft ground did not permit the use of heavy trucks for transporting the material, and a road network would have entailed a large investment. The use of a rail system was eliminated from the beginning, since the ground would be very uneven after the quarry was developed. At that time only one prototype of a crawler-mounted mobile crushing unit existed. This unit was operating in a nearby works as a primary crusher. AMONG the main interesting developments in the coal market have been the changes that have taken place between the consumer groups. Important signs of these changes began to appear many years ago, but in a modest way, and were apparent only to the few fuel experts making broad statistical determinations. It is doubtful, however, that any of these experts appreciated the significance of their early findings, and perhaps none had the imagination to consider how extensive these changes might be eventually with respect to solid fuels sales and distribution. (Reference here will be principally to bituminous coal.) Railroad Fuel Major changes in coal use did become pronounced after World War II, and it did not take an expert to see what was taking place and how serious the impact was likely to be. First, was the case of the steam and diesel locomotives. The railroads had been considered the best coal customers; they were steady and large purchasers and usually paid a better price than most others. Railroad fuel provided the basic mine realization and it often was the source for operating cash during general market slumps. It was the outlet for 20 pct of the bituminous coal production, as much as 110 million tons in 1946.

Since the adoption by the U. S. Bureau of Standards several years ago of specifications for standard 100- and 200-mesh sieves, frequent requests have been received that this Bureau test and certify sieves of other sizes than these. With a view to the adoption of a series of standard testing sieves which might be of use to all industries making fineness tests, this Bureau for two years has been studying the question of such a standard screen scale. Various scales that have been proposed were considered, and information was sought of representative firms in the various industries interested as to their requirements. Manufacturers of sieves have also been consulted as to the desirability of different screen scales and the practicability of their manufacture. As a result of this study of the question, a conference was called at the Bureau of Standards, Apr. 20, 1916, of representatives of various committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Water Works Association, American Institute of Metals and the American Spice Trade Association; also representatives of the Committee of Revision of the U. S. Pharmacopæia, the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering, the U. S. Office of Grain Standardization and the U. S. Bureau of Standards; also representatives of a number of private firms engaged in industries in which sieves are used, such as the glass, the drug milling, the abrasive, the asphalt, the mining, the spice, the chemical, and the graphite industries; also representatives of the firms in this country manufacturing wire cloth and sieves. In any theory of a hydrodynamic nature dealing with the vertical flow of gas-liquid mixtures in pipes, the two factors that present the greatest difficulty are the relative motion between the phases and the energy loss resulting from turbulence work. The former has generally been referred to in the literature as "slippage" and the latter as "friction." A third factor of importance is the nature of admixture between liquid and gas for both the relative motion between the phases as well as the turbulence work are functions of the type of mixture. Although much work of a general nature has been performed on the vertical flow problem, there have been very few attempts made to study experimentally the factors involved in the phenomenon individually. Of these, perhaps the most notable is the work of Moore and Wilde1 on slippage. Some writers on the subject have assumed that over a wide range of operating conditions the controlling type of mixture is one in which gas bubbles of uniform size are distributed throughout the liquid, and that the data obtained from experiments on the motion of single bubbles through various liquids may be used in evaluating the slippage. Ver-sluys2 has further assumed another controlling type of mixture in which the liquid occurs as a dispersed phase within the gas and applies data on the fall of drops of water in air to calculating the relative velocity. It was for the purpose of studying the applicability of data on single bubble motion to the slippage factor and to further observe the nature of mixtures that a research program was conducted at the University of California during 1932 and 1933. Considering the importance of the steel trade and the strategic position occupied in it by the Birmingham district, it may be surprising to many to learn that the first pig iron smelted with coke was made in Alabama on Feb. 28, 1876, although merchant pig iron had been produced in Rockwood, Tenn., in 1867 -a plant that is still in operation The heavy deposit of Clinton ore, extending from Pennsylvania into Alabama, varies greatly in accessibility, on account of geological changes such as erosion or anticlinal upthrow; it varies equally as much in thickness and in quality. The brown ores extensively scattered through the South also vary materially in quality—some are relatively low in phosphorus and high in manganese, and vice versa. The red ore varies materially in phosphorus, but the iron produced from this ore was always considered too high in phosphorus for treatment by the acid bessemer or open-hearth process and did not contain sufficient phosphorus for the basic bessemer process. Under these conditions there remained only the basic open hearth as a possible process; and for many years it appeared impossible to use this, because, with coke smelted iron, the silicon was too high to permit its use in basic lined furnaces. Various attempts were made, from time to time, to produce a low-silicon iron, by carrying high lime burdens together with harder blowing, but the blast furnaces of the South were not equipped with the blowing power of today and from 31/2to 5-lb. pressure was the normal working condition. The result of these experiments, therefore, was that a furnace would get a lime set or be hastily changed to avoid scaffolding, and engineers and superintendents were careful not to renew the experiments. After the development of the beds of dolomitic stone in East Birmingham, the carrying of sufficient lime to bring down the silicon in the blast furnace to the permissible open-hearth limit was successfully done at the Alice furnace in Birmingham, commencing July 22, 1895. In a very short time the entire output of that furnace was being sold to different Northern steel manufacturers, with a guarantee that silicon and phosphorus should run below 1 per cent.

IN a recent paper1 the authors presented information on a refinement of the Rohn type of creep test with data on pure iron that exemplified the behavior of the apparatus. The present paper extends that work to nickel and cobalt and to the examination of the comparative high-temperature properties of two widely used commercial alloys. Careful attention has been given to the effect of plastic deformation in decreas-ing creep rate, using the elementary metals iron, nickel and cobalt for purposes of analysis. In any, endeavor to develop new materials for high-temperature service one soon encounters a real problem as to the sort of test to be employed in evaluating the commercial possibilities of the alloys. At one time it was considered satisfactory to determine the tensile strengths at elevated temperatures and to use these values as a criterion for the commercial application of the alloys. More recently the proportional limit has been used as a means of classification. Data obtained from a form of bend test has also shown promise as providing a "merit index" of high-temperature serviceability.2 Koerber and Pomp3 state that since the influence of testing time is small, the high-temperature yield point of steel furnishes sufficiently reliable and concordant values up to about 350° C. The major oil discovery in 1938 for Wyoming was the General Petroleum Corporation's So. 1 Government, C.NW.SE. of sec. 21-35N-77W, on the Cole Creek structure in central Wyoming, 14 miles northeast of Casper. This well found commercial oil production in basal Cloverly sand (Lakota) at 7978 ft. and was completed on May 28, 1938, at 8019 ft., 3 ft. in Morrison shale. It had an initial produrtion of 10 bbl. of oil an hour but at the end of a 7-day test made 336 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. During 1938, the well produced a total of 23,161 bbl. of oil. It has been agitated about 10 days out of each month to provide fuel for lease and drilling operations, the balance of the time it has been shut in pending the completion of the second well on the structure. The Cole Creek oil is of intermediate base and has an A.P.I. gravity of 32.7". The record of the well contains the "tops" listed in the accompanying tabulation. IT has long been known that plain high-carbon steels may be susceptible to graphiti-zation below the A, critical, but no data have been available to indicate what factors cause and tend to inhibit graphite formation. Two recent publications1,2 have shown that the factors controlling graphitization below the A, are different from those operating above the A, inversion where commercial graphitization of malleable iron begins. Furthermore, for plain high-carbon steels graphitization below the critical point does not appear to be related to ordinary chemi-cal analyses. Many years ago it was recorded' that the rate of graphitization at subeutectoid tem-perature is not a maximum just below the A, critical, but at some lower temperature, which Austin and Norris have shown to be about 670°C. Indeed, work done in our laboratory has demonstrated that it is im-possible to spheroidize certain steels in the temperature range of 650° to 710°C. with-out the formation of considerable amounts of graphite. However, if the temperature is maintained just below the A, (720°°C,) these same steels may be completely sphe-roidized at constant temperature. In previous studies1,2,4 on 1 per cent plain carbon steels graphitization was en-countered during prolonged tempering. The limited number of steels studied did not provide sufficient data to permit adequate study of the factors controlling this graphi-tization. Accordingly, a limited statistical investigation was undertaken, utilizing 18 steels of similar chemical analyses, fur-nished by four steel companies, who also supplied information regarding the history of manufacture.

Numerous papers have been published on the use of graphic methods for determining the best curve for estimating the production decline of oil wells but, as far as the writer has been able to ascertain, nothing has been published showing how curves may be worked out mathematically that will conform most closely to the production data under consideration in any given instance; hence the writer has endeavored to show just how such application can be made. Among the valuation engineers, two types of curves are in current use for the representation of the decline in production of oil wells. One may be represented by the equation, y = krx; this is sometimes known as a percentage curve, for the production for any period is multiplied by a constant rate or percentage to obtain the production for the succeeding period. It appears as a straight line on semilogarithmic cross-section paper. The other curve may be represented by the equation, y = kxn, and is shown as a straight line on logarithmic cross-section paper. In each equation, y represents the number of barrels produced in a given period of time, and x the successive periods of time. The other letters are constants to be determined for each well, or group of wells considered in arriving at the most probable curve to represent the rate of production for a given property. From this the underground reserves may be estimated by extrapolation, or by extending the curve beyond the last known period of production to show the most probable production values for the future. Application to the Burbank Pool Fig. 1 relates to a property in the Burbank Pool, Osage County, Okla. The production is shown as an average per well per month, is plotted to the vertical scale of barrels on the left-hand margin and to the horizontal scale of months at the bottom of the chart. In column y, the number of barrels is listed beginning with May, 1922, as the first month on which to base a decline curve. The type of curve used is of the form, y = krx, or, expressed in logarithms, log y = log k + x log r, in which log k and log r are constants to be determined so that the curve will most closely approximate the production data given.

Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

This paper aims to put into useful form the information, at hand regarding temperatures of molten steels, covering all carbon contents up to 1.5 per cent., in the hope that if the assumed ideal temperatures tabulated are incorrect the right ones may . be brought to light. THE finishing and casting temperature of steel is a subject concerning which there is so much to learn that some temerity is required to write about it. This paper is, therefore, suggestive rather than dogmatic, though the views expressed seem now to the writer to be correct; nevertheless, they may be modified by future developments or discoveries but until then may be of some utility, particularly to beginners in the making of steel. Consideration is limited to the temperatures of simple steels, also called carbon steels,, which are those in which carbon is the only element introduced for the purpose of conferring desired physical properties. Alloy steels will receive attention later. Three things largely determine what a batch of steel really will be; viz., composition, casting temperature, and rate of teeming. Each has its advocates as being the most important; but they are so interrelated that each must conform to or be right for the, other two. When one is claimed to be the most essential to have right, that, probably, was the one that it was found had to be of a certain description, within narrow limits, to suit the already adopted variations of the other two; that is, it was the last of the three to be brought into line.

PROBLEMS dealing with the movement or ,migration of fluids through porous beds have been the subject of much research. The subject is not peculiar to the production of oil and gas, as many investigators have studied the nature of this movement and its relationship to the problems of other industries. Darcy1 conducted a series of experiments relating to the percolation of water through filter beds. King2 carried on an extensive series of laboratory experiments with the object of formulating some conception of the rate of movement of water through soils and sand strata in the drainage of surface water into underground channels and subsequent recovery of this water through wells drilled into the source beds for irrigation purposes. Slichter3 undertook a study. of the same problem from a mathematical standpoint, and more recently Furnas4 has investigated the flow of gases through beds of broken solids with particular reference to blast-furnace operation. With specific reference to gas production, Muskat and Botset5 of the Gulf Research Laboratory undertook an experimental study to establish quantitatively the characteristics of and laws governing the flow of gases through consolidated and unconsolidated porous materials of fine texture with a view of predicting the performance of gas in an underground reservoir. There seems to be a general agreement that many of the relationships between the numerous factors influencing the flow of fluids through porous materials are far too complicated to be attacked by analytical methods based upon a knowledge of hydrodynamics. As part of an ongoing research program, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is monitoring surface subsidence over six longwall panels at three Utah coal mines. These sites are characterized by mining depths of 244 to 610 meters (800 to 2,000 ft .), thick and massive sandstone layers in the overburden strata, multiple seam mining, extraction heights of approximately 1.8 to 3 meters (6 to 10 ft.), and rugged surface topography. Maximum subsidence, angle of draw, timing relative to mining, horizontal strain, and rate of subsidence development are being determined and correlated with mining and geologic variables. Results to date indicate the maximum vertical subsidence over the monitored panels ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 meters (2 to 3 ft.). The major factors controlling the amount of subsidence are the panel dimensions and the status of adjacent panel mining. Only minor surface cracking at the panel ends was evident at any of the sites. In all cases, there was a time lag of several months between the start of mining and subsidence at the surface. As subsequent panels are monitored and additional data become available, better estimates of the effect of various site characteristics on the subsidence will be possible. Ultimately, improved prediction capabilities will allow mine operators in the West to evaluate the potential for subsidence-related damage which could affect the current or future land use above the mine.

Many large high-grade manganese deposits occur in marine-transgressive sedimentary sequences deposit fed on stable platforms, although the manganese mineralogy varies from carbonate to oxide facies and host lithologies vary from carbonate- to clay-dominated sections. Examples include the Nikopol and related deposits of the Soviet Union and Groote Eylandt, Australia. Recent work has shown that high sea-level stands are synchronous with stratified and stagnant oceans. We suggest that during transgressions and consequent anoxic events, the anoxic deep waters rich in dissolved manganese were dilute ore-forming fluids. Manganese was precipitated on the oxidized side of oxidation and alkalinity interfaces on shallow shelves. Where the precipitate was preserved, manganese ac- cumulated into ore deposits. Sedimentary manganese deposits have not been widely explored for in North America, nor are they always obvious in outcrop. Large areas of North America are underlain by rocks that we consider broadly favorable for such manganese deposits, and the disparity between the high potential but significant reserves of the United States is difficult to reconcile. Important undiscovered deposits seem likely. An area of Cretaceous rocks in South Dakota is presented as a possible location for a United States deposit analogous to foreign deposits described herein.

During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. Production and Proration The district produced 175,053,729 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) which is a decrease of 4.0 per cent from the 182,369,484 bbl. The Eagle mine is situated in the Kerber Creek mining district, Bonanza, Saguache County, Colo. The climate and topography of this district arc similar to those of mining camps of the Rocky Mountain region that lie 9000 to 12,000 ft. above sea level. The district is at the northeasterly edge of the San Juan volcanic region, in which successive Tertiary lavas have built up a high plateau resting upon earlier sedimentary formations, or the underlying pre-Cambrian complex. The latter was exposed in places by erosion previous to the eruptions. In the Bonanza district, proper, only volcanic formations, andesites and latites, are found. Dr. H. B. Patton,1 in his survey of the district, discriminates between several varieties of lavas and maps these as distinct flows. They are local variations within the same lava and it is impossible to determine any distinct line of demarkation between them. Structurally they are members of the same flow. There are three general types of vein occurrences: 1. Lead-zinc-copper-silver-gold veins in well-defined fissures with a quartz gangue; ill these, the various sulfides show a zonal arrangement. 2. Massive gray copper ores high in silver, in irregular fractures in the form of small lenses and pockets, in which little or no quartz is found. 3. Manganiferous quartz veins very low in silver and gold at the surface which, with depth, become important silver veins containing subordinate amounts of gold. These veins have a quartz gangue with an abundance of Phodochrosite. The silver is associated with small amounts of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite; fluorite also is present. The Eagle is the only mine that has been developed in the manganiferous quartz type of vein.
