Continuing the increase in production of crude oil and condensate started in 1937, the oil fields of South Arkansas reached a 13-year peak with 26,570,704 bbl. for the year 1942. The stability of the production branch of the industry in the area is demonstrated by Fig. I, which reflects the fact that although the number of producing wells in the state has declined from 3280 in 1931 to 2957 at the end of 1942, total production has continuously increased since the beginning of 1937. This is because all fields discovered since Jan. I, 1937, have observed spacing patterns up to one well to each 160 surface acres, the dual completion of wells where there is more than one producing horizon Eight new pools were brought into production in South Arkansas during 1942 (Fig. 2) They increased the state's crude oil and condensate reserve by 121,000,000 bbl., bringing the total recoverable reserve figure to 450,000,000 bbl. (Table 3) as of Jan. I, 1943. Abandonment of wells in the stripper areas of the state increased by 32 per cent over the preceding year, there having been 142 wells permanently abandoned in 1942. For economic reasons 279 wells were temporarily shut down as of Dec. 31, 1942. A price increase may start these wells to pumping again and also be the incentive toward the commencing of several secondary recovery projects in the fields discovered between 1922 and 1937. The crystal structure of MoNi3 was determined by means of X-ray diffraction. This structure is isotype with that of ovgered TiCu3. The lattice parameters are: a. = 5.064A, bo = 4.224A, co = 4.448A, and zf 0.157. If the orthorhombic distortion (slight relative to the corresponding orthohexagonal unit cell) is disregarded, the structure may be described in terms of a close-packed ordered atomic layer, stacked in the sequence: abab. The structztres of ordered TiCu3 and TiAl3 are homotectic. The three types of ordered hexagonal phases, iso-structural with TiNi3, MgCd3, and VCo3, are known to occur in AB3 alloys of transition elements of the first, second, ad third long periods. It was noted1 that phases with the TiNi3 structure occur selectively in alloys of Ti-group elements with Ni-group elements. In AB3 alloys of Ti-group and V-group elements with Co-group elements the AuCu3-type structure predominates.' The vCO3 structure, which was determined very recently,' has hexagonal symmetry, but the actual atomic arrangement here, too, is rather closely related to the ordered cubic structure of AuCu3-type. However, an ordered hexagonal close-packed structure of the MgCd3-type occurs in MOCO33 and WCO3.4 Consequently, the question arises as to whether or not the crystal structure of MoNi3 is also of the MgCd3-type. Grube and winkler5 found that MoNi3 has a hexagonal close-packed structure with a = 2.54A and c/a = 1.65. They pointed out that some additional weak diffraction lines could be observed in the powder pattern, which may have been due to an ordered atomic arrangement in this phase. However, no detailed information was obtained by them and the structure was apparently not further investigated by others. The present work was, therefore, undertaken in an attempt to determine in detail the structure of MoNi3, and to investigate the possibility of ordering. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Alloys used in the present work were arc-melted in a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. Electrolytic nickel and molybdenum, both 99.9 pct pure, were used. Chemical analyses were not made, but the melting loss was not higher than 2 pct for any alloy. Ingots were first homogenized at 1200°C for 48hr, quenched, heavily cold worked, and then annealed at 820" or 860°C for 1 week, followed by quenching in cold water. Powder specimens for X-ray work were prepared by crushing the heat-treated solid specimens. In order to remove strains, the powders were reannealed in evacuated scaled fused silica capsules for 6 hr at the same temperature at which the corresponding solid specimens were annealed. X-ray photographs were taken with an asymmetric focussing camera, using unfiltered CrK or CuK radiation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys containing 20.8, 25, and 26.4 at. pct Mo, homogenized at 1200°C, showed the face-centered-cubic structure of the Ni-base a-solid solution. It was revealed, however, by micrographic examination that the 26.4 at. pct Mo alloy contained in addition very small amounts of a second phase, in accordance with the phase diagram.6 On the other hand, the 20.8 at. pct Mo alloy after annealing at 820°C gave the X-ray diffraction pattern of the ordered face-centered-tetragonal MONi4.7 In this pattern several additional weak diffraction lines were also observed, corresponding to the strongest diffraction lines of MoNi3. The alloys containing 25 and 26.4 at. pct Mo after annealing at 820" or 860°C gave X-ray diffraction patterns, as shown in Tables I and 11, corresponding to MoNi3. Each one of the reflections which could be tentatively indexed on the hexagonal close-packed cell of Grube and Winkler,5 with the exception of the basal plane reflections, was split into a doublet, as seen in Table I. Since microscopically the alloy consisted of a single phase, it seemed probable that the lattice of MoNi3 is actually slightly deformed, as compared with the tentative hexagonal unit cell. In addition to these diffraction lines, several weak lines were also present, as shown in Table 11, which could not be indexed at all on the hexagonal close-packed cell considered. Satisfactory indexing of all diffraction lines observed was found to be possible by using an orthorhombic unit cell with ao = 5.064A, ft = 4.224A, and c = 4.448A. These values, whose accuracy is estimated to approximately ± 0.008A, correspond to 95.14A3 for the volume of the unit cell, and to an X-ray density of 9.50 g per cm3. If no attention were paid to the weak reflections listed in Table II, a reduced -unit cell of half the volume (a = 2.532A, b = 4.448A, and c = 4.224A), closely related to the orthohexagonal cell, might be used. The dimensions of the orthohexagonal cell of the same volume as the reduced cell are: a = 2.562A, b = 4.437 A, and c = 4.183A. It may be seen that in the reduced cell the a axis is slightly shorter, while the b and c axes are slightly longer than those corresponding to the orthohexagonal cell of the same volume. Martensite transformations in steels and other alloys are characterized in part by the absence of composition changes during the growth of a new phase. Transformation occurs rapidly, and there is insufficient time for long range diffusion or partition of alloying elements to take place; martensite reactions in alloys thus are similar to phase transformations in single component systems. A fundamental understanding of martensite transformations in steels is impossible without knowledge of the free energy change upon transforming austenite (face centered cubic iron containing alloying elements) to ferrite (body centered cubic iron containing alloying elements) of the same chemical composition. The present paper assembles the best information available concerning the influence of temperature and composition on this free energy change. Most of the material has been taken from the work of Johansson,' Mehl and Wells,2 Zener3,4 and Smith;5 and indirectly, through these authors, from the work of Austin.6 In agreement with the generally accepted viewpoint, martensite is assumed to be an ordered solution of carbon in ferrite of the same composition as the parent austenite; only at high temperatures and low carbon concentrations is the carbon in ferrite distributed at random. The properties of the disordered solution are estimated by extrapolating the known properties of iron-carbon solid solutions into the range of supersaturation, and the free energy change associated with ordering is estimated from the theory developed by Zener. By incorporating Smith's recent thermodynamic measurements and Zener's theory of ordering, the present analysis modifies previous estimates of the free energy change associ- ated with martensite transformations. Consider a two component system consisting of a solvent A and a solute B. Let Na and Nb represent mol fractions of A and B respectively, let aa = raNa and ab = YbNb represent activities, and let superscripts 1 and 2 refer to phases 1 and 2. THE National Coal Association held its annual meeting at Cleveland on Nov. 14-16, 1928, having changed the time from the spring to the autumn to avoid conflict with the great number of meetings ordinarily held in the spring. Institute members were \\yell to the fore in its activities, the president, E. C. Mahan (who was reelected for another term!, C. E. Bockus, treasurer, and the secretary, H. L. Gancly, being A. I. M. E. members, as are many of the directors. At the first session, our past president, S. A. Taylor, presented a 1;aper which is reprinted in part herewith. At the Thurs- day session W. D. Brennan presided, Walter Barllum led the discussion on membership, and Otis Mouser led the discussion on taxation. In the afternoon, J. P. Williams, Jr., led the discussion on research. Rembrandt Peale presided at the annual dinner in the evening. At the concluding session on Friday resolutions were adopted, among them one in which the Association "reaffirms its attitude toward proposed Federal legislation affecting the bituminous coal industry by saying that it opposes legislation which would seek to single out this industry for regulatory action. This particularly applies to such bills as S4490."

The present critical state of the supply, distribution, and utilization of coal and the necessity for pooling and zoning coals calls renewed attention to the lack of any fully adequate classification of coal. In the past coals have been classified as anthracite, semianthracite, semibitumi-nous, bituminous, subbituminous coals, and lignite, and a few special types, such as splint coal and cannel coal. But under the term bituminous coal are included a great variety of coals differing markedly both physically and chemically. The term subbituminous coal covers as great a range of chemical differences. In order to distinguish these varieties of bituminous coals it has been customary to designate coal by names derived from the place where mined, or by the name of the bed from which it is mined. Thus, in the market reports, coals are quoted as Pocahontas coal, New River or Sewell coal, Moshannon coal, Ohio coal, Williamson County coal, Jellico coal, and so on indefinitely, no limit being set as to the boundaries of the area to which a given name is applied. Nor is there any scale by which the coal from one place may be compared with the coal from some other district or some other bed. On the one hand, coals from the same district may be quite distinct and sell at very different prices or coal from the same bed may differ greatly in different districts; on the other hand, coals from different states may be so similar physically and chemically that one could replace the other in practical use without any appreciable difference in service. The following classification, arrived at after a careful review of a large number of systems of classification and of all of the recognized characteristics of coal, brings together all coals that so nearly resemble each other physically, chemically, and in heating qualities that any coal of a given type could replace any other coal of the same type and grade in use. Thus, if coals A and B are classed as of the same type and grade they have, so far as known to the writer, approximately the same heating value when burned under the same conditions, and the same character, length of flame, and properties affecting transportation and stocking; and if of the same grade, approximately the same percentage of impurities.

IN OPERATING the Alpha mine of the Consolidated Coppermines Corp., Kimberly, Nev., it was necessary to pump out approximately 1200 gallons of waiter per minute to prevent the mine being flooded. There were three levels in the mine at which water accumulated and from which it was pumped, the 1200, 1400 and the 1800- ft. levels. At each, the pumping equipment was installed in duplicate so that if for any reason one unit was out of commission the other would be available to prevent flooding. The two centrifugal pumps at the 1200-ft. level were 600 hp. each; at the 1400-ft. level, 100 hp. each; and at the 1800-ft. level, 300 hp. each.

GERMANY'S recent collapse and the occupation by the Allies of the coal fields of the Ruhr, the Saar, Silesia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia have focused attention on the postwar coal problems of Europe. American coal operators are interested deeply in what is happening in Britain, particularly in the discussion of plans to rehabilitate and reorganize the entire British coal mining industry, as such reorganization will probably determine the place Britain will occupy in the European coal markets for the next few decades. The continuing decline of British out-ut per man-shift, particularly during wartime, has resulted in a most serious effort to determine whether this unfortunate trend is due to the physical condition of the coal seams, poor management, poor engineering and planning, inadequate use of power and machinery, or failure of labor to co-operate with management.

GROUND movement and subsidence is an important matter from several points of view and it is regrettable that more papers have not been written on this subject in the past year. Damage may be done to surface buildings or to the higher workings of a mine, and a study of the subject gives valuable in- formation on hanging-wall or roof control. The latter objective is strikingly shown in a recent paper presented by Jack Spaulding on Oct. 21, 1937, before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, of Great Britain, entitled "Theory and Practice of Ground Control in the Kolar Gold Field, India." All may not agree with some of his theories that were deduced from studies of the many violent rock bursts at depths of 5000 to 7000 ft., but the data obtained are of great value. His theories of symmetrical ring stresses and symmetrical domes which are pictured as perfect are rather hard to understand as such uniformity is un- likely in view of the irregularities in the formation due to folds and fractures of various kinds. All will agree in principle with this idea of domal effects, which have been observed in many countries, but they are generally irregular.

THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

The manganese deposits of the Embree Iron Co., Embreeville, Tenn., are thought to be fairly typical and representative of the East Tennessee type of deposit, and so to warrent rather detailed description. The methods used by the Embree Iron Co. for prospecting and mining, and to a lesser extent for milling; should therefore be applicable to other East Tennessee manganese deposits, as yet' undeveloped. Early History and Discovery of Manganese Brown iron ore (limonite) was mined by the Embree Iron Co. at various times from 1890 to 1910. The early method was simply pick-and-shovel mining in open pits. Later hydraulic giants were used and sluice lines carried the ore down the mountain slopes to log washers.. During this phase of mining, manganese ore was discovered under the iron ore in some of the pits. In other areas oxidized zinc ore was found under the iron. It thus happened that the valuable zinc deposits were discovered in 1914. During the World War period, from 1914 to 1918, there was sporadic prospecting for manganese ore among the abandoned iron workings, but the main activity then centered around the recently discovered lead and zinc deposits. It was not until 1934 that manganese mining began in earnest, under the supervision of R. D. Pritchett, Mine Superintendent. Geology of the Manganese Deposits United States Geological Survey Folios 151 (Roan Mountain) and 118 (Greeneville show that Bumpass Cove is a synclinal structure thrust faulted along the southeast flank, but with normal sequence of strata along the northwest flank. Fig, l. shows the areal geology of Bumpass Cove as taken from the folios superposed on the U.S.G.S. -T.V.A. 1/24,000 topographic maps of the Erwin and Telford 7 ½ minute sheets. The manganese mines occur near the contact of the unfaulted Shady dolomite and the Erwin quartzite. This contact zone is deeply weathered, with overburden averaging 40 to 60 ft. thick. The material overlying' the bedrock along this normal contact is a very tough, plastic clay, termed "buckfat" or "ocher" by the miners. It is not a true ocher, however, in the sense of having commercial value. The manganese deposits occur along this "ocher" band. Fig. 1 also shows how the manganese deposits occur along the broad topographic terrace between the 2100 and 2200-ft. contour lines. This terrace lies at the foot the Erwin quartz ridge. Apparently it is the topographic is expression of the deeply weathered zone along the Shady-Erwin contact.

A LL over our great country I have been privileged to see, during the last six weeks, the manifestation of a new spirit among engineers. Partly under the inspiration of leaders whose influence has been felt not only nationally, but internationally, - partly through the recognition of the service that engineers have been able to render to the nation during the recent crisis, a new self-consciousness has been acquired by the individuals, and now this self-consciousness seeks expression in opportunities for service and participation in public affairs. The engineer . no longer sees himself a mere reservoir of information to be tapped when some one is in need of cold facts, no. more an administrator of mere material things, but a potential administrator of- public affairs, a citizen and a human being, with the responsibilities, as well as the privileges of citizenship.

THE oil and gas lease is the basic contract of the oil and gas industry; it is the foundation stone upon which the producing industry, particularly, is based. As the industry is precarious and highly speculative, the foundation contract should be of the utmost integrity and certainty. But right there an anomaly exists; the oil and gas lease is the most obscure, most uncertain, doubtful contract in the realm of law today. That is a condition that must be considered when taking oil and gas leases, and when buying, selling, and holding them. It may fairly be asked why should this industry rest upon so insecure a foundation. Why should not the oil industry rest upon the contract that is the basis of all industry, the warranty deed? There are many contributing reasons, but the principal one is business expediency. The Anglo-Saxon idea of ownership of land is that every land owner owns from the center of the earth to the sky all that is above and all that is below-consequently the oil and gas are owned by the person who owns the surface. That idea is not exactly true with reference to oil and gas, for many states have adopted the doctrine that oil and gas are like wild animals; they are fugacious and migratory and belong to the man that traps them. But, except for that doctrine, we believe that oil and gas are owned by the owner of the surface, wherein we differ from the Latin-American countries where the mineral rights are owned by the government. The United States was settled largely by homesteading. The owners of land were, in the main, farmers, who did not have the means or the faith to drill for oil or gas. The operators or speculators did not want to buy the land on the mere possibility of finding oil; hence a compromise resulted by which the land owner gave the speculator or the operator what he called an oil and gas lease, or a right to go upon his land and drill for oil and gas. What is supposed to be the first oil lease placed on record reads as follows: Agreed this 4th day of July, A.D. 1853, with J. D. WITH rapidly diminishing oil reserves: a great percentage of which are uneconomical at present prices, some of the existing methods of development and production will have to undergo radical re- visions to meet the changes continually taking place in the petroleum industry. Imagination in an engineer is a great asset. The fancy of today is found to be the realization of tomorrow, and with this thought in mind, there is here presented a more or less imaginative picture which, to my mind, has a meritorious basis. Directed drilling has reached a stage of accuracy sufficient to allow the prediction that this art will be used in the future development of oil structures, especially those \\,it11 thin sand bodies 'and steep dips. Directional drilling in a number of fields in California has gratifying results. Wells which practically laid pipe lines through the oil sands have enjoyed a greater drainage radius with a consequent greater initial and cumulative production. In one field where the vertical thickness of sands was approximately 550 ft., wells drifting at an angle as great as 55 deg. fro111 vertical had over 1100 ft. of perforated pipe in contact with these sands. CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

Charcoal-iron is quantitively so unimportant compared with coke-iron, that its qualitative importance for many industrial purposes is entirely unkriown to many coke-furnace-men, and to the great majority of the inembers of this Institute. To explain this qualitative importance, and explain some of the fact,ors that affect the quality, are the objects of this paper. A brief review of' the commercial conditions governing the charcoal-iron industry is a necessary preliminary to any adequate treatment of the subject. The advent of coke-iron, which transformed the whole iron industry commercially, left intact a limited production of charcoal-iron in the East and South, which has been conducted almays on the basis of high cost and high quality, with correspondingly high selling-price. In the Northwest, particularly in the Lake Superior district, the development has been along totally different lines, for which the close proximity of the great iron-ore deposits and the great forests of that region mere responsible. When the great white-pine forests were removed there were left behind large areas of hardwood and hemlock, to which little attention was paid in the prosperous years of the white-pine industry. But when the latter declined, the demand for lumber, and the presence of lumber-men, probably more skilled than any others in the world, caused the gradual introduction of these woods into commercial use. It was a matter of ancient knowledge that hardwood made an excellent charcoal, and to utilize the cordwood left after the saw-logs were removed, by converting it into charcoal and using it to smelt ore from the adjacent mines, mas an obvious step. AT the meeting on Engineering Education on Mon- A day afternoon E. A. Holbrook, of the University of Pittsburgh and chairman of the Committee, presided as chairman with W. B. Plank acting as vice- chairman. About sixty members of the educational fraternity were present. Dean Holbrook, after a few introductory remarks, introduced the first speaker of the afternoon, Charles Y. Clayton, who then presented his paper, "Why Do So Few Elect Metallurgy?" in which he stressed the fact that ,one of the things the study of metallurgy ,now needs is publicity and public education on what metallurgy is and 'does. Another thing he brought out is that the study of metallurgy has been looked on for many years merely as a branch of other departments. He gave tables showing past and present enrollment in the course of metallurgy in various schools.

THE better control of production was made the topic for a special program of the annual meeting of the Institute last February. In the discussion at that meeting it was brought out that in many branches of the mineral industry (as in other industries), there was faulty industrial coordination. Those who were best informed by reason of their intimate connection with coal, copper, oil, iron, lead and zinc, and almost all other of the essential minerals pointed to a condition of chronic over-capacity, to the dissipating use of irreplaceable minerals, to an unstabilized price structure, and to over-stimulatecl production and the destruction of some mineral resources over and above what is thought to be the needs of prudent cur- rent consumption. The discussion went far enough to point out the existence of various problems, and the question then raised was "what can be done by way of self-coordination of industry?" by "production control from within?" or in other words, "how can the mineral industry protect its resources against waste and at the same time protect both the producer and consumer against loss from prices that are too low or too high?"

THE coal-fields of Missouri, situated hi the northern and western portion of the State, are distributed, in whole or in part, over 57 counties, embracing an area estimated by Mr. Broad-head to be practically 23,000 sq. miles, including small detached beds and outliers in St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties in the eastern part of the State. This area includes about 8,000 sq. miles of Upper or Barren Measures, 2,000 sq. miles of exposed Middle, and 12,420 sq. miles of exposed Lower Measures. In a general way, the Missouri coal-field is bounded on the east by an imaginary line entering the northern part of the State just east of the 92c1 Meridian and passing across the State in a southwesterly direction to a point on the Kansas-Missouri line a little below the southern boundary of Barton county. An important part of the field overlaps this line and extends down the northern side of the Missouri river, under¬lying the greater part of Randolph, Howard, Boone and Audrain counties. In all, 34 counties produced coal during the year 1903. Fig. 1 shows the position of the coal-fields in Missouri. GEOLOGICAL FEATURES. The Coal Measure formations, all of the Carboniferous age, rest unconformably upon the rocks of the sub-Carboniferous or Mississippian series, and, in some cases, upon the rocks of the Devonian and Silurian ages. From their outcrop on the eastern and southeastern borders of the field, the Measures dip west to northwest at the rate of 10 ft. per mile, reaching a maximum thickness estimated by

TWENTY years or so ago I wrote an article on management which consisted mostly of a chart similar to thousands of others of that day showing line functions, staff functions, and the chain of command in a typical mining organization. Since hen we have been "bossing" from the faces to the swivel chair and we have made many errors of no little expense to our companies. We have kept the chart in mind but many times we have changed the functions to fit the people we have had to work with. Good management after all is getting results with the people, the equipment, the supplies, and the natural conditions of the coal seam or seams and adjacent strata present. We have made, with little effort, a good showing with average people and equipment in good natural conditions. We have made a miserable showing (although expending every personal effort) with better than aver- age people and equipment in bad natural conditions. In the latter case many of our stockholders felt that better management would have found some way to save their investment. Perhaps they were right.

IN both Sweden and England rapid progress is being made in metallurgical development, and the steel industry in both countries is distinctly on the mend. There has been some industrial trouble in Sweden in the iron mines and the wood pulp mills, but at the same time all the steel works have a sufficient stock of pig iron and ore to continue their operations for many months to come. Consequently the strike, unless long protracted, will not affect the output of steel in Sweden. Several of the steel manufacturers in Sweden, most notably Forsbacka and Sandviken, have been very suc-cessful recently in securing large orders, particularly from the continent, for ball-bearing steel, both hollow and solid. Whereas some years ago they ran into-se-rious competition with the German mills, the quality of the steel from these Swedish mills is such that they are now firmly established, and are selling some of the lead-ing manufacturers of bearings on the Continent, as well as automobile manufacturers. The secret of their success seems to lie in a better selection of ores, in more careful control of blast-fur-nace operations and better equipment. Rule of thumb in steel making is taboo, and strict reliance is placed on the laboratory. They are constantly experimenting, and metallurgists and chemists are sent to different countries for study and investigation. In their native ores they have, of course, a unique advantage in pos-sessing iron ores extraordinarily free from phosphorus. At Forsbacka, they are not content with the ordinary chemical analysis of the ingot; but also test the physical properties, as well as make metallographic investiga-tions for slag inclusions, segregations and oxides. In both England and Sweden they watch the nitrogen con-tent of the steel very carefully, a feature which does not appear in the ordinary analysis. In testing carbon, they do not use the color test, but employ an electric .induction device.
