ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. WHEN a mineral particle is fractured, bonds between the atoms are broken. The unsatisfied forces that appear at the newly formed surface are considered to be responsible for the adsorption of ions at the mineral surface. A knowledge of the mechanism and extent of ion sorption from solution onto a mineral surface is of interest in the development of the theory of flotation.&apos;*&apos; Study of the adsorption of sodium from an aqueous solution oftheon quartz offers a simple approach to this complicated problem. The availability of a radioisotope as a tracer element meant that accurate data could be obtained."." Three main factors which appeared likely to affect the adsorption of sodium are: l—concentration of sodium in the solution, 2—concentration of onotherof cations in the solution, and 3—anions present in the solution. Hydrogen and hydroxyl ions are always present in an aqueous solution. By controlling the pH, the concentration of these two ions was kept constant. The variation in thesethe amount of sodium adsorbed with variation in sodium concentration was then determined under conditions standardized in regard to hydrogen ion. The effect of concentration of hydrogen ions and of other cations was also measured. A few experiments were made to get a preliminary idea on the effect of anions. The active isotope of sodium was available as sodium nitrate. Standard sodium nitrate solutions were used throughout these experiments except when the effects of other anions were studied. It was found that sodium adsorption increased with sodium-ion concentration, but less rapidly than in proportion to it. Increasing hydrogen-ion concentration, or conversely decreasing hydroxyl-ion, brings about a comparatively slight decrease in sodium-ion adsorption. Increasing the concentration of cations other than hydrogen or sodium decreases somewhat the adsorption of sodium ion. It would appear as if the kind of anion is a secondary factor in guiding the amount of sodium ion that is adsorbed. Materials and Methods Quartz The quartz was prepared as in previous work in the Robert H. Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratory&apos; except for the refinement of using de-ionized distilled water for the final washing of the sized quartz, prior to drying." To minimize the laborious preparation of quartz, experiments were made to determine .whether the sodium-covered quartz could be washed free of sodium and re-used. The experiments were successful as indicated by lack of Na" activity on the repurified material and by its characteristic sodium adsorption. Table I gives the spectrographic analyses of the quartz used. The quartz ranged from 16 to 40 microns in size, averaging about 23 microns (microscope measurement), and had a surface of 1850 sq cm per g (lot I), 2210 (lot 11) and 2000 (lot 111) as determined by the Bloecher method." Radioactive Sodium Method of Beta Counting for Adsorbed Sodium: Na22, the radioisotope of sodium, possesses convenient properties.&apos; It has a half-life of 3 years, thus requiring no allowance for decay during an experiment. On decay it emits a 0.575 mev ß+ radiation and a 1.30 mev r radiation. The decay scheme is illustrated in the following equation: ß+ NaR-------&apos;8&apos;77NeZ2 3 years The /3 radiation is sufficiently strong to penetrate an end-window type of Geiger-Mueller counting tube. This, in turn, makes it possible to use external counting, a great advantage in technique. Furthermore, it permits the assaying of solids arranged in infinite thickness, while assaying evaporated liquors on standardized planchets. The equipment used was standard and similar to that employed by Chang.R The original active material was 1 ml of solution containing 1 millicurie of Na" as nitrate. This active solution was diluted to 1000 ml. Five milliliters of this diluted active solution was found to give a quartz sample a sufficiently high activity for accurate evaluation of the sodium partition in the adsorption measurements. Also, 1 ml of final solution gave a sufficiently high count for precision on the liquor analyses. The sodium concentration of the diluted active solution was 1.2 mg per liter, so that 6 mg of sodium for 60 ml of test solution and 12 g of quartz was the minimum amount used. The active solution was stored in a Saftepak bottle. Procedure for Adsorption Tests: The method consisted of agitating 12 g of quartz with 60 ml of solution of known sodium concentration for enough time to establish equilibrium between the solution and the quartz surface. The quartz was separated as completely as possible from the solution by filtering and centrifuging. The activity on the quartz and in the equilibrium solution was measured and the partition of the sodium was calculated from the resulting data. The detailed procedure for the adsorption test is set forth in a thesis by Laxen." In brief, it included the following steps: 1—Ascertainment of linearity between concentration of Na" and activity measured. 2—Evaluation of factor to translate activity on solid of infinite thickness in terms of activity on an evaporated active film of minute thickness, on the various shelves of the counter shield. 3—Taking precautions to avoid evaporation of water during centrifuging

By monitoring the capacitance of abrupt p-n junctions it is possible to follow the motion of substitu-tional impurities. A p-n junction is formed by growth of silicon from an Al-Si alloy on an n-type silicon sutstrate at a temperature in the range 650" to 750°C. The diodes are etched and sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed to various temperatltres for 10 mm and the capacitance remeasnred. For very heavily doped diodes (-1019 per cm3) observable capacitance changes occur at neutron fluences of >1015 per cm 3. The results may be interpreted in seceral ways, the simplest of which is to assume simple vacancy diffiision with small impurity -racancy interaction (at the diffiision, i.e. annealing temperature of 700°C). In this interpretation it is found that a typical vacancy makes about 1024 jumps and travels about 10-5 cm before disappearing. The required effective annihilation center density is about 1016per cm3 . Estimates of the vacancy-impurity interaction can be made and the above numbers correctecl, but for arty reasonable assumptions the number of vacancy sinks connot be much reduced. ThE complete annealing of radiation induced defects requires that the vacancies and interstitials either recombine, travel to the surface of the crystal, or travel to an annihilation center, e.g., a dislocation or a precipitate. If the interstitial is ignored except as a possible vacancy annihilation center at low temperatures,* the motion of vacancies may be followed by monitoring the corresponding motion of substitutional impurities. pfister2 has measured the enhanced diffusion of impurities in an asymmetric shallow diffused silicon structure by optically monitoring the junction movement. In these experiments we monitor instead the capacitance of a heavily-doped deep symmetric p-n junction. The sensitivity for this method is several orders of magnitude higher than in Pfister&apos;s technique, mainly for two reasons: 1) the junction capacitance of a heavily-doped junction is sensitive to impurity movements in the Angstrom range* com- and 2) the junction may be far from the surface which is a major annihilation center for vacancies. THE EXPERIMENT A p-n junction is formed by the epitaxial growth of silicon from an A1-Si alloy on a silicon substrate at a temperature in the range 650° to 750°C. The technique used is the transport of an aluminum melt through a temperature gradient.4 A 10-mil thick aluminum disc is sandwiched between two silicon wafers and the assembly raised to about 650° C with a temperature gradient normal to the sandwich. After about 8 hr the upper (hotter) wafer has been entirely transported and deposited epitaxially on the substrate wafer. The substrate and overgrowth resistivity are measured with a 4-point probe. The as-grown structure is lapped until the wafer is about 1/2 mm thick with the junction in the center. Contacts consisting of electroless nickel covered by electroplated rhodium are applied to both the p and n sides. The wafer is diced into square dice 1/2 to 1 mm on a side and the dice are etched sufficiently to remove approximately 1 mil of silicon. The following results are all for aluminum (p-side) and antimony (n-side) doped specimens with NA =3x 1018 per cm3, ND = 2-8 x 101A per cm3. The diodes are sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed and the capacitance remeasured. A special capacitance measurement method is used to insure a low sensitivity to shunt resistance. The diode is voltage driven and the current monitored by a phase lock amplifier. It is possible to adjust the detector phase to a point where shunt resistances as low as 100 O have no effect on the reading. The diodes in this study have a capacitance in the range 1000 to 5000 picofarads and a shunt resistance in the range 100 to l06 O depending on the stage of the anneal. THEORY The theoretical problem is twofold: 1) The computation of the amount of impurity diffusion and hence the impurity profile resulting from a given amount of vacancy motion, and 2) the computation of the capacitance from the impurity profile. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental capacitance (in particular the changes) yields the amount of vacancy motion. Vacancy Motion. A convenient parameter to measure the total amount of vacancy motion is Jv the total number of vacancy jumps per unit volume. Although this parameter varies with position in the crystal, owing to vacancy annihilation at the surfaces, it is approximately independent of position far from the surfaces, i.e. in the junction region. In terms of the number of vacancies per unit volume Nv and the vacancy diffusivity given by

ONE of the major uses of barium in metallic form is as a getter material in vacuum tubes. Because of the high chemical reactivity of the metal, Ba-Al alloys are extensively used. Numerous methods for the preparation of Ba-Al alloys have been published, a few of which1-4 are cited here. Most of these methods were found to be quite elaborate, involving the reduction of BaO, and not too well adapted for the close control of the final composition of small amounts of alloys prepared for laboratory use. A simple laboratory method for the preparation of Ba-A1 alloys in small batches starting from pure metals was devised, so that it was possible to control the desired compositions to within 1 pct. The pertinent features of the alloy system Ba-Al5 are 1) an intermediate compound BaAl, with the melting point of 1050°C, and 2) a eutectic between aluminum and BaAl4 at 98 pct Al. The accompanying sketch shows the experimental arrangement for the preparation of the alloys. Weighed amounts of aluminum and barium were placed in an alumina and a stainless steel crucible, respectively. According to the supplier&apos;s specification, the purity of the metals used in the alloys is as follows: a) aluminum rods—99.9 pct Al, and b) barium rods—99.5 pct Ba. The stainless steel crucible, tapered at the bottom and having a 1/16 in. diam hole, rested on top of the alumina crucible. The assembly was placed inside a graphite sleeve which rested on a refractory platform. The platform moved the assembly up and down through the field of a radio frequency coil. A glass bell jar was placed between the crucible assembly and the radio frequency coil to maintain a steady flow of helium around the melt. A small window was cut out on the wall of the alumina crucible to observe the progress of the re- action and to record the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The platform was first raised high enough to move the barium out of the radio frequency coil field in order to allow only the aluminum to melt. The assembly was then lowered so that the barium began to melt and flow out through the small orifice into the molten aluminum. In order to keep the violence of the exothermic reaction under control, the rate of flow of barium was carefully regulated by raising or lowering the crucible assembly. All the samples prepared by this technique were examined by a Norelco X-ray diffractometer using CuKa radiation, The diffraction specimens were prepared by placing the finely powdered samples in flat specimen holders. The Ba-Al alloys prepared with a high barium content were found to consist mainly of BaAl4. The structure of BaAl4 has previously been reported by Alberti and Andress.8 They found that BaAl4 was body-centered-tetragonal with an a0 = b0 = 4.530Å and c0 = 11.14Å. An alloy whose composition was found by chemical analysis to be almost 100 pct BaA1, was used to determine the relative intensities. The d-spacings were obtained from the same alloy to which a small amount of tungsten had been added as a calibrating material. Accurate values for a, and c, were calculated according to the method proposed by Taylor and Floyd.&apos; The calculated values are: a, = b, = 4.566Å and c0 = 11.250Å. The measured d-values for BaAl4 are shown in Table I along with relative peak intensities above background and hkl indices. Acknowledgment The authors are grateful to L. J. DUE to its location in the Atacama Desert, one of the most barren of the earth&apos;s surfaces, Chuquicamata&apos;s water supply presents unusual problems. Yearly rain-fall averages less than one tenth of an inch at the plant. However, there are summer showers above 12,000 ft in the Cordillera to the east, the resulting run-off flowing through old river valleys buried beneath more recent volcanic formations, to be impounded within sediment-filled basins. This water emerges at springs where the outlets of these basins are blocked by lava flows, and here are formed the small streams which feed the only important river of the region, the Rio Loa. Chuquicamata&apos;s water is obtained from these springs and rivulets. [ ] The map above indicates four pipe lines from which potable and industrial water are supplied. Potable water, amounting to 4500 metric tons per day, is conveyed in the Toconce pipe line from springs 59 miles due east of Chuquicamata. This water is used not only for drinking, but also for boilers and other needs requiring high quality. For industrial water at the oxide plant, there are two 12-in. pipe lines from the Rio San Pedro, carrying a total of 17,000 metric tons per day of slightly brackish water. This water is at present used mainly for leaching and for hygienic purposes. Water Source Found For the present and future needs of the sulphide plant, it was calculated that at least 32,000 metric tons per day of make-up water would be required. For this purpose, a pipe line of 44 miles length was constructed to bring in the entire flow of the Arroyo Salado, one of the eastern tributaries of the Loa. The salt content of this water is so high (over 5000 parts per million of solubles, mostly chlorides) that it is highly detrimental to farming, and the Chilean Government had been studying projects to separate these waters from others of the Loa system in order to improve agricultural conditions in the fertile valley of Calama. So it happened that the Government was willing to award rights to the Arroyo Salado waters under agreement whereby the Mining Company removes waters from the Rio Loa system above Calama for all time. The outlet of these waters, after serving their purpose at the new concentrator and leaving the plant in tailing, is the Salar de Talabre, an old salt lake which presents fully ten square miles of surface to serve as an evaporating pan, the outlets having now been blocked by dams. Here the dry climate of Chuquicamata is a favourable factor, evaporation averaging slightly above 1/4 in. per day. The Toconce and San Pedro pipe lines have been functioning from 26 to 34 years, and through the use of special cleaning tools which were developed at the plant, as well as deaeration of the more active Toconce water, these pipes are now maintained at capacities which do not diminish as years go on. Constructing the Dam The Arroyo Salado pipe line design and construction involved certain special and interesting features, and inasmuch as this line and its intake works are solely for the needs of the new sulphide plant, more detailed description is given. The waters are impounded at a gravity dam constructed of concrete to a height of 100 ft above the river bed, keyed into the precipitous Dacite walls of the narrow canyon (barely 6-ft wide at the bottom, only 25-ft width at 50 ft above). A small secondary dam was built 100 ft down stream from the main dam, providing a pool of 15-ft depth to protect the main structure from flood flows over the spill-way during the rainy season. A system of four 36-in. syphons was designed for discharging these flood waters from the lower depths of the lake, in order to avoid eventual sedimentation behind the dam. The lake has a length of 3300 ft, and its water level is controlled by an adjustable spillway permitting draw-down of eighty inches, amounting to 41,000 metric tons of available capacity. This regulation is necessary because of wide fluctuations in stream flow between day and night due to freezing of feeders. During the construction of the dam the entire river flow was handled within a 36-in. pipe line some 2000 ft in length. As the excavations proceeded

The Australian continent possesses significant reserves of a wide range of minerals, including bauxite, coal, copper, diamonds, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands, nickel, phosphate, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. Australia&apos;s identified economic resources of many minerals are very large as indicated in Table 1. A sophisticated and highly experienced mineral industry is now an established feature of the Australian economy and Australia is the world&apos;s largest exporter of iron ore, alumina, mineral sands and refined lead and amongst the leading suppliers of many other commodities such as coal, lead and zinc ores/concentrates, nickel, refined zinc, tungsten concentrates and bauxite. The industry exports 70% of its production. This is reflected in the value of Australian mineral exports which have grown from about $200m in 1960/61, comprising 10% of total export receipts, to about $1265m or 29% of export income in 1970/71 to around $7061 representing 37% of Australia&apos;s total export income in 1980/81. AUSTRALIA&apos;S MINERAL RESOURCES POLICIES Federal and State Governments&apos; Responsibilities Australia has a federal system of government comprising six States, a self-governing Territory and a Federal Government. Under the Australian federal system the Constitution sets down the powers of the Federal Government. All powers not assigned to the Federal Government in the Australian Constitution reside automatically with the States. Certain of these broad powers result in the Federal Government having a significant influence on resources development. For example, in being responsible for economic management, the Federal Government&apos;s fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Federal Government is of direct importance to decision-makers in the resources industry. The Federal Government is responsible also under the Constitution for external trade matters; and international trade and commodity matters are increasingly important in Australia&apos;s international relationships. Foreign investment is another area where the Federal Government has a role to ensure that national interests are protected. This foreign investment power flows from the Federal Government&apos;s control of foreign exchange movements into and out of Australia. However, before enlarging on these and others of the Federal Government&apos;s powers and policies, it should be emphasized that the State governments, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within their own boundaries, are more directly involved in the day-to-day administration and regulation of mining operations. For instance, the powers of the State governments include the responsibility-for the granting of exploration rights and mining leases, the approval of mining operations and the levying of royalties and other like charges. Administrative arrangements covering the granting of minerals and petroleum exploration and development titles vary from State to State. Before development rights are granted, State governments consider environment protection and rehabilitation aspects of development proposals. The provision of infrastructure within State borders is a matter primarily of State government responsibility. It is usual practice in Australia for State governments to construct and operate infrastructure services such. as railways, ports and electricity generation and transmission. The States may also provide certain public services such as electricity. and water, port and loading facilities, communications, health and education services which form part of the infrastructure of mining operations. In remote areas the mining companies themselves usually are expected to provide much of this infrastructure. However, the Federal Government is primarily responsible in some fields, such as telecommunications and parts of the railways network. State governments carry out preliminary exploration and geological mapping and some are directly involved in the mining of coal for power generation. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT POLICIES The continued sound development of the minerals and energy resources sector is regarded by the Federal Government as being of very great importance. However, the Government does not seek to participate directly in resource developments. It sees its role rather as that of establishing a sound economic and policy climate in which private companies can identify opportunities, seek out customers and marshall the necessary capital for the development of resource projects.

AT the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17, 1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal-Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompressed-descriptive remarks were made as follows ; " A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. Under ordinary conditions, so little information is obtained from the ingot in individual cases that practically none of importance is acquired. These remarks have particular reference to the state of physical and structural soundness of the steel. Questions of chemical composition, segregation, piping and the grosser cavities have frequently been given attention. Defects of continuity of structure, which manifest themselves in the working; of the metal, and at the final stages cause distrust in the finished forging, have generally been neglected. ? Paul, Chairman of the Special Committee on Divisional Relationships, presented the interim report of his Committee which was published in the September, 1945, issue of MINING AND METALLURGY and a copy of which is incorporated in the official minutes of this meeting. The following specific actions were taken by the Board of Directors in relation to the six recommendations in the Summary of the Report as published: (1) Mr. Haider, Chairman of the Petroleum Division, presented the formal request of his Executive Committee that the headquarters of the new Secretary of the Petroleum Division be established in Dallas, Texas. After lengthy discussion in which the point was made that the success of this program would depend upon effective co-operation between the Chairman of the Division, the Secretary of the Petroleum Division, and the Secretary of the Institute, the request was approved. The new secretary will be selected by the Division and will be employed by the Institute in the capacity of an Assistant Secretary. (2) The following item in the report was approved:

Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe&apos;s Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. MUCH has been said and written about deep mine shafts and deep drill holes as man in his search for mineral wealth digs deeper into the earth&apos;s crust. Each year some new extra depth is heralded as a record, but with unlimited possibilities of going still deeper. In contrast to "digging deep," "mining high" is limited by the height of the mountains (Mt. Everest being the maximum with its 29,000-ft. elevation) and also by the extent of human endurance. An ex- ample of what might be called near- stratosphere mining in what is probably the highest mine worked by compressed air in the world is seen in a recent project in the Andes mountains of southwestern Bolivia.

THE adiabatic elastic deformation of a body is accompanied by a change in temperature. This phenomenon is known as the thermoelastic effect. Under adiabatic conditions the temperature of a metal bar is decreased by an elastic elongation and is increased by an elastic compression. All materials which elongate on heating behave in this manner. The sign of the thermoelastic temperature change is reversed for the few materials which have a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. The following equation for the thermoelastic effect can be derived from fundamental thermody-namic theorems, as shown in the Appendix: dT8 =-a1/cs T dss [1] Cs In this equation, T is the absolute temperature, S is the entropy, a, is the coefficient of linear thermal expansion, cs&apos; is the heat capacity per unit volume at constant stress and s is the stress (positive in tension). Eq 1 can be applied to small, but finite changes in stress in the following form: ?Ts =- a1/cs T?ss [2] The sign of the temperature change AT is opposite to that of the change in stress s for materials which have a positive coefficient of thermal expansion. Eq 2 has been verified for many different materials and stresses at room temperature. No previous publication appears to have been devoted to an in- vestigation of the thermoelastic effect over a range of temperatures. Review of Literature Lord Kelvin (W. Thomson) presented a general theory of the thermoelastic effect in 1851&apos; and later applied it to a solid, subject to an arbitrary system of stresses&apos;. His analysis was based on a cycle of isothermal and constant-strain transformations and led to Eq 2 above. Even today, one of the clearest expositions of the thermoelastic effect is found in Lord Kelvin&apos;s article on elasticity in the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (1878). R. The device here described has been found useful in sampling foundry-iron, and there is no reason why it should not be equally useful in sampling other metals, which are not too hard to be drilled with a breast-drill. It consists, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of an ordinary plumber&apos;s gas T (without bead) of about 1/2-inch in internal diameter, over the leg of which is snugly fitted a small tin cup, about If inches deep, to catch the drillings which are made by use of a breast-drill with a 1/4-inch twist bit, working through the arms of the T. The forward arm of the T is filed down to a blunt edge, over which is stretched a short piece of rubber tubing projecting a little beyond the end. The bottom of the inside of the front arm of the ? is filed down to a slope, to facilitate the passage of drillings into the tin cup. The rear arm of the T is fitted with a tin ring, projecting about 1/4-inch, for the purpose of holding in place a stiff spiral brass spring, which serves to press the sampler firmly against the metal to be drilled. The other end of the spring is supported against a shoulder of the breastdrill. The projecting rubber prevents the loss of any drillings, and also the falling of sand from above into the sampler. With ordinary care there need be no risk of getting particles of rubber into the sample. It is, of course, not possible to get a fair average sample of drillings, representing a pile of foundry-iron, by taking drillings from any one or two pieces, because of the frequently mixed character of the iron. This observation applies more particularly to the sampling of iron as it is broken and piled at the foundry, than to sampling at the works, where, if the furnace is working regularly, a few pigs may fairly represent a whole cast. IN 1923 Desch¹ pointed out that the grains in a metal which is anisotropic with respect to its thermal coefficient of expansion would contract differently upon cooling, and that the stresses developed might approximate the plastic strength of the metal. More recently Boas and Honeycombe2-5 studied the behavior of several metals upon thermal cycling and observed that the stresses developed in arlisotropic metals are great enough to produce slip lines in individual grains and a roughening of the specimen surface. This phenomenon they have named "thermal fatigue." The mechanism they propose involves essentially a kneading of the grains, the deformation being alternately in compression and tension in a given grain as the temperature is changed in one direction and then the other. The present work was undertaken to investigate the possibility that an additional mechanism might operate to produce plastic deformation during thermal cycling—a "thermal ratchet" that depends upon a combination of grain boundary flow to relax the stress that develops between differently oriented grains upon raising the temperature and transcrys-talline slip to relax the oppositely directed stress which develops on lowering the temperature. Thus, thermal cycling should produce a nonreversible distortion such that certain grains will change shape differently from their neighbors with a simultaneous displacement being produced at the grain boundary. Temperature Dependence of Grain Boundary and Grain Strength The critical resolved stress for the initiation of slip in metal grains is only mildly affected by temperature." For example, in cadmium it decreases from 0.15 to about 0.05 kg per sq mm when the temperature is increased from 20° to 458°K and further temperature increase causes little further decrease. On the other hand, the work of KG1 indicates that the grain boundaries behave in a viscous fashion that can be described8 by the expression: t = BVexp(Q/RT) [1] t is the shearing stress on the boundary; B, a constant; V, the flow rate at the boundary; Q, the activation energy for grain boundary flow; R, the gas law&apos;s constant; and T, the absolute temperature. Eq 1 indicates that the stress necessary to cause a given grain boundary flow rate, V, decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. The value of the constant B is such that at sufficiently low temperature and ordinary strain rates deformation will occur preferentially by slip rather than by grain boundary flow. There is considerable evidence to indicate Consider the bicrystal shown in Fig. 1. In grain 1 the slip plane lies 45 " to the boundary while in grain 2 the slip plane is 90" to the boundary. The coefficients of expansion of the grains in a direction parallel to the length of the crystal are a1 and a, with a, > a2 for the orientations shown. The sequence of events that can occur upon heating and cooling this specimen is illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. Initially there is assumed to be no stress in the specimen (A). Upon heating, grain 1 attempts to become longer than grain 2, but is constrained by grain 2. Thus grain 1 is loaded in compression and grain 2 is loaded in tension, and a shearing stress is present across the boundary (B). As the temperature is increased, the stress will build up, and finally grain 1 will be plastically deformed by slip, since the greater stress is resolved on its slip planes. Any further heating will result in more slip and the stress will remain constant until some temperature T* is reached where the stress can be relaxed by grain boundary flow.† At this relaxation temperature (C) a step will appear between grain 1 and grain 2. Further heating above T* will cause grain 1 to become relatively longer, but no stress will appear because the grain boundary is too weak to support the stress (D). Upon cooling again, at T* (E), the grain boundary will again be able to support a shearing stress, and upon cooling further, grain 1 will be loaded in tension and grain 2 in compression (F). When the decrease in temperature below T* is sufficient to impose the critical shear stress upon the slip plane of grain 1, it will be stretched by slip.

Activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys have been dctermined by equilibrating mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide at known oxygen Pressures in a thermobalance at 1300°C. Conzpositions and iron activities of the oxide phase at equilibrium are known from previous work, and compositions of the Fe-Pt alloy phase formed at equilibrium were detcvt?zined from the observed weight changes of the samples. The activity curve obtained shows a strow negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law. THE present investigation was undertaken as part of a research program dealing with phase equilibrium relations existing among the oxides of iron and titanium at 1300°C. At low oxygen pressures of the gas phase in equilibrium with these oxides, the iron activity of the system is high, and considerable alloying of iron with the platinum used as a container material takes place. Thermodynamic data for Fe-Pt alloys at 1300°C are needed in order to evaluate quantitatively the extent of such reactions. Larson and chipmanlhave determined activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys at 1550°C by equilibrating platinum metal with CaO-iron oxide-SiOzmelts in which the iron activities were known. Compositions of the resulting Fe-Pt alloys were determined by chemical analysis. Mundiath and Gerassimov2 have studied thermodynamic properties of Fe-Pt alloys by electromotive force measurements in the temperature range 550" to 1000°C. The experimental method used in the present investigation is a slight modification of that used by Grube and Ratsch3 in studies of NiCr-alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General. Mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide were equilibrated at 1300°C in atmospheres of known oxygzn przssures, and the course of the reactions was followed by measuring the weight changes of the mixtures. The principles involved in the derivation of composition-activity relations from these measurements are illustrated by the composition triangle for the system Fe-FeZO3-Pt shown in Fig. 1. Take as an example a mixture of FeZO3 (hematite) and platinum such that the total composition is represented by point T. If this mixture is heated to 1300c in air (poz = 0.21 atm) and the oxygen pressure is then reduced gradually, the oxygen content of the oxide phase decreases and increasing amounts of iron enter the metal phase. As the oxide phase and the metal phase for all practical purposes are insoluble in each other, their compositions are represented by points moving toward Fe along the joins Fe-Fe,03 and Fe-Pt, respectively. The total composition of the mixture during this process also changes, but only with respect to oxygen content, because the vapor pressures of iron and platinum are negligible at 1300°C. Hence the change in total composition is described by a straight line (constant Fe/Pt ratio) radiating from the 0 apex of the composition triangle Fe-Pt-0, of which the triangle in Fig. 1 is a part. Only one such line ("oxygen reaction line", T-T",) is shown in Fig. 1. The total composition of the alloy-iron oxide mixture at any instant must, in addition, be located on the straight line (conjugation line) connecting the two points representing the compositions of the two coexisting phases. It therefore follows that the total composition of the mixture at any instant is represented by the point of intersection between the conjugation line and the oxygen reaction line. An example of the situation prevailing at a chosen oxygen pressure, po2, is shown in Fig. 1 by points a&apos; (alloy composition), b&apos; (oxide composition) and T&apos; (total composition). Point b&apos; is known from the work of Darken and Gurry,4 and point T&apos; is experimentally determined by the observed weight change of the mixture (distance T-T). Hence, point a&apos;, the composition of the alloy, is determined from the above data as the intersection between the join Pt-Fe and the extension of the straight line bl-7&apos;. The various ion exchange reactions occurring during restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column wing lime saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500-3 mg/L (29- 0.18 gr per gal). The essence of NaCl in the restoration fluid at levels in formation water is beneficial in improving the selectivity of the system for NH4+ removal and reducing Ca + + ion consumption
