During no similar period in the development of petroleum refining technology has so much progress been made in methods and equipment for the economical utilization of heat. Drastically severe commercial and economical conditions controlling the refining industry during 1927 gave a great impetus to improved efficiency and more economical operation in all departments. I think it is fair to say, however, that more progress has been made in the department of heat utilization than in other branches. I use the word utilization advisedly in the dual sense of better primary generation and application of heat and of saving by recovery methods. It was because of this trend that the subject, "Economical Application of Heat," was made the keynote of the refinery engineering sessions just completed. No new, outstanding elemental discoveries can be claimed for the year along this line. Some of the progress made has been in the development of better furnaces and distilling equipment embodying the more modern principles of boiler practice in obtaining complete combustion of the fuel, low excess air requirements and high transfer rates through the heating surface. Transfer rates of 3000 to 6000 B. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. were considered good some time ago in the older type of equipment. Today a transfer rate of 25,000 to 35,000 B. t. u. is an actual accomplishment in commercial installations and engineers are talking of the feasibility of 50,000, 75,000, even 100,000 R. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. Contributing most to bringing this about have been the rational use of the velocity factor on both the oil and firing side of the heating surface, and the study and application of the principles of radiant heat in furnace design. Vapor Heat Economy The principle of heat exchange, especially against oil vapors, has been applied to a greater extent than ever before. The recovery of heat from oil vapors is not new. Recently Hiller1 reported results on the impairment of the strength of quartz glass rods through wetting, indicating that there was general agreement with the prediction of the Griffith formula in that for the liquids used the rods were weakest in water i.e. the liquid which probably had the greatest free energy of immersion. The Griffith equation predicts that the tensile stress necessary to propagate a crack of length c is where ? is the interfacial free energy, E Young's modulus. Since for a solid immersed in a liquid of surface tension ?L and contact angle 8 at the solid-liquid-gas contact, ?s - ?SL = ?L cos ? where ?s is the surface free energy of the solid. Hence comparison between ?L cos 0 and strength impairment should be possible. In a study of the usefulness of the Kuznetsov pendulum2 as a means of studying rock drillability we have determined the effects of various liquids on the pendulum hardness of Bavarian limestone. The pendulum used had diamond points (Burgess Vibro-graver), a period of 1.14 sec and a total on sample weight of 1191 g. The decline of the pendulum oscillations was recorded by a light beam on light sensitive paper carried on a kymograph. Rehbinder's expression relating hardness to amplitude attenuation as a function of time can be written In A = - (1/H) t + In Ao where A, A, = amplitude at time t and initial amplitude respectively, H = hardness parameter, and t = time. The line of best fit to the experimental points was determined using the IBM 7090 electronic computer, the computer also gave A, by extrapolation to zero time. The results for the various liquids tested are given in Table I and Fig. 1. The limestone surfaces were highly polished before testing and each reported hardness value represents the average of at least ten separate determinations of the pendulum decline curve. The annual production and productivity of underground coal mines in recent years declined from 334 Mt (368 million st) and 14.5 t (16 st) per man per shift in 1969 to approximately 254 Mt (280 million st) and less than 8 t (9 st) per man per shift in 1977. Productivity is still hovering at about 7.25 t (8 st) per man per shift. According to US Bureau of Mines, the estimated US coal reserve is about 396 Gt (437 billion st), 68.65% of which is obtainable by underground mining methods. Approximately 153 Gt (169 billion st), or about 85.2% of the high Btu premium coking coal of the eastern US, would need to be extracted by underground mining methods. It is thus apparent that under- ground mining will continue to play a major role in total US coal production, which is expected to rapidly increase to about 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) by 1985, with about 606 Mt (668 million st) being contributed by underground mines. Production Potential of Continuous Mining The production potential of a continuous mining section depends primarily on the producing ability of the miner, transporting ability of the face haulage, and the matching of the two systems. The producing ability of the continuous miner depends on its actual cutting ability and the time available for cutting coal. The performance of 10 continuous miners operating in coal seams of various thicknesses were monitored in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, using continuous electrical power analyzers and time studies. The recordings on current and power strip charts yielded an accurate analysis of the cutting, trimming, and idle times of the machines on a full shift basis. Continuous miners of various models and sizes from 112-298 kW (150-400 hp) were monitored. The Palo Pinto limestone pools of Jones and Shackelford Counties were defined and almost fully developed during the year. A new Palo Pinto limestone pool was apparently discovered when the K. B. Nowels NO. 1 Pardue, S.F.I. and W. survey, south central Haskell County, was completed for a small well in Palo Pinto limestonc at 3395 to 3421 feet. In Haskell County, Amerada Petroleum Corporation's C. J. Kleiner, J. M. Cass survey, drilled to the Ellenburger with a total depth of 5607 ft., where it was abandoned. A Bluff Creek sand field of undetermined size was discovered by the Fain-McGaha No. 1 Dawson-Conway, P. G. Holcomb survey, which was chompleted for 37 bbl. at 1496 feet. The Cook field was extended by the Roeser-Pendleton B-113 Cook in sec. 113, E.T.R.R. Co. survey, the well being completed for 510 bbl. from Cook sand encountered at 1545 to 1568 feet. Several shallow pools of minor importancc mere also discovered in Shackelford County during the year. In Jones County the Lewis and the Steffens fields, in block 15, T. and P.R.R. Co. survey, were further developed during the year but the limits of the Steffens field were not definitely defined. The most, important discovery in Jones County was the Guitar field, where most of the wells that had been producing from the Cook sand were deepened to the Hope limestone, a new producing horizon. In Taylor County, the Bowles field, see. 28, B.A.L. survey, was defined arid proved to he of minor importance. The Goldsboro and Novice area, ill northwest Coleman County, continued to hold considerable interest because of the developments near the town of Novice, where new Ieases continued to be opened for production. The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus became citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil.

The Tintic mining districts of central Utah com- prise one of the major silver-lead producing areas in the United States. Ore valued at nearly $450 million has been produced from these districts since the initial discoveries, in 1869, of veins cutting the Silver City monzonite stock. Subsequent production from the famous manto-type "ore runs", which characterize the Main Tintic district, was followed during the past 40 years by discovery of the blind orebodies of the East Tintic district, including the famous Tintic Standard mine and the most recent discovery, the Burgin mine, currently being brought to full production by Kennecott Copper. The occurrence of blind orebodies of exceptional size and grade in both the Main and East Tintic districts has made this area a field laboratory of major importance for the study of geochemical dispersion halos and alteration features associated with known ore, and has led to the discovery of additional concealed orebodies. The larger share of the basic data-gathering and interpretation has been done by members of the U.S. Geological Survey who have been studying the Tintic mining areas since before the turn of the century. These studies have been supplemented and expanded by the geological staffs of the local operating mining companies, by exploration geologists and by students.

HERCULANEUM, MO., about thirty miles south of St. Louis on the Mississippi River, is the site of the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The lead concentrates come by rail from the Flat River district and from three properties in Madison County, Missouri; from the Balmat division in St. Lawrence County, New York; a small tonnage from the Tri-State district; and occasionally from the Aguilar property in Argentina. The average grade is 67 to 68 percent lead and 1 to 3 oz of silver. The bulk of the material is flotation concentrate, with some gravity or table concentrate. No secondary metals, outside drosses, or any materials high in bismuth, arsenic, or antimony are treated. All concentrate is received in box-caps and is unloaded directly from a trestle into the concentrate bins at the roaster plant. Flux, coke, and any miscellaneous lead-bearing material is either unloaded directly into bins or unloaded with a locomotive crane. All moving and switching of cars is done with two thirty-ton steam locomotives. Shipping facilities for the plant are provided by the Missouri-Illinois Railroad. Water for the plant and for fire protection is obtained from a dam built in a near-by creek. Drinking water both for plant and town is obtained from

In June, 1893, while I was with the Old Dominion Copper Co. at Globe, Ariz., I received an offer to take charge, as manager, of the Baltimore Electric? Refining Co. which had recently built a plant at Baltimore, Md., having a capacity of about 1200 tons of electrolytic copper per month, using the Hayden series system. This was a very large output, for in those days the plants were small and the art was in its infancy. At the beginning of 1893 there were 11 electrolytic refineries in the United States, most of them using the multiple system. The Hayden series system was used at Baltimore and Bridgeport and the Smith series system was in operation at the Electrolytic Copper Co. at Ansonia, COM., and at the Pennsylvania Salt Co. at Philadelphia. In the latter system the plates were placed in a horizontal position, but the operating difficulties were so numerous it was soon discarded. The total production of these 11 plants in 1892 was very small; I have not been able to discover reliable figures of production. MEASUREMENTS of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for com-prehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be, illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as ele-mentary form as possible. A description of calibration methods con-stitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 2 will be used in equations throughout the paper.

NI-CR and some Ni-Cr-Fc alloys, when used as electrical resistance heating elements in reducing atmospheres, at times suffer rapid breakdowns due to so-called "green rot." These reducing atmospheres are most frequently used in bright annealing and heat-treating furnaces which are kept for long periods of time at 1500' to 1800°F. The green rot is a preferential oxidation of the chromium in the alloy to such an extent that the remaining metal frequently becomes ferromagnetic. The Curie point (magnetic transition point) at room temperature for a pure Ni-Cr alloy is known to be at about 7 pct Cr.¹ This represents a severe loss in chromium for one popular grade of resistance alloy, which is nominally 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr. The formation of oxides along the grain boundaries makes the ribbon brittle and gives the fracture a green, earthy appearance—hence the name. The authors have studied this phenomenon, simulating the industrial conditions by heating resistance ribbons in various reducing atmospheres, such as moist hydrogen or the atmosphere specified in the ASTM test.² This atmosphere contains 16 pct H2, 10 pct CO, 4 pct C02, 1 pct CH1, 1.5 to 2.5 pct H2O, balance N2. Little success was had in producing severe corrosion with the commercial 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys. It had been noticed, however, that 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy wires deteriorated very rapidly when placed in the bottom of narrow thermocouple protection tubes. The bottoms of the tubes with the wires were heated in air. This took place both in porcelain tubes and in Inconel* tubes either with the cold end open or loosely stoppered with asbestos. On examination the wires showed microstructures which would be classified as green-rot corrosion. Subsequent investigations with various alloy wires confirmed the observation that corrosion occurred in some wires, including 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys, much more rapidly in such tubes than had occurred previously in test atmospheres mentioned above. When 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloys are oxidized with an abundant air supply, the oxide coat consists of both nickel and chromium oxides. In this case thermodynamic equilibrium between the oxides is not established. However, when oxidized 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy specimens were heated to 1500" to 1800°F inside small diameter tubes, the oxide coat transformed to a bright metallic outer layer of nickel or nickel-rich alloy, beneath which appeared a green oxide, followed by intergranularly attacked metal. The obvious explanation is that in the narrow tubes, thermodynamic equilibrium is being established according to the equation NiO + Cr (in alloy) ? Ni + Cr2O3 This reaction is favored due to the fact that the oxygen pressure over nickel oxide is more than 10"' times the oxygen pressure over the green chromium oxide. The initial oxygen in the tubes is depleted very rapidly by oxidation of the wire and of the tube, if it is metallic. A confirmation of the occurrence of the reaction, reduction of NiO by the chromium in the alloy, was obtained by putting oxidized nickel foil into an evacuated quartz tube along with a piece of bright 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy ribbon, and heating the tube at 1820°F for a number of hours. The nickel oxide on the foil was completely reduced to pure nickel, leaving a bright foil. The 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy became strongly magnetic and showed the typical green-rot structure. Weights of the samples before and after testing showed the weight loss of the foil to approximately equal the weight gain of the ribbon. Evidently the bottom of long, narrow protection tubes, stoppered or not, may under certain conditions act just as the sealed quartz tubes in respect to being a confined space in which oxygen is not freely replenished. This condition of oxygen depletion can be prevented by introducing a small amount of air into the bottom of the tube. Many conditions becloud the green-rot phenomenon, such as carburization, sulphidization, and the presence of other corrosive agents. However, these experiments have shown that the basic reaction is a case of internal oxidation which can occur simply by adjusting the oxygen pressure to a low enough level so that the atmosphere will leave the nickel intact and oxidize the chromium. The action of the other agents in commercial atmospheres can then be taken up as individual cases. From these and numerous other tests completed to date or still in progress, it is believed that a more critical evaluation of electrical resistance alloys for their resistance to green-rot corrosion can be made. A much better understanding of the mechanism for this type of corrosion should also result. A more complete report on these experiments will be published later. A high temperature calorimeter designed for use up to 1500°K is described and the theory of its operation presented. This calorimeter was used to measure the heats of formation of Na-Sn alloys ranging in composition from tin to Na2Sn. The values tend to support those reported by Kubaschewski and Seith. ONE method of obtaining the heat of formation of an alloy is to measure the heat of mixing of the elements at high temperature. The principal advantage of this method is that the desired quantity is measured directly, while in conventional room temperature methods the differences of the heats of solution of the elements and the alloy in a suitable solvent are measured. A method of improving the accuracy of the high temperature measurements, when the precision of the measurement is lower than that of the heat capacity values for the elements, is to add one component at room temperature to the other at the high temperature, so that part of the heat of reaction is dissipated in heating the cold component to the high temperature. Thus, only a fraction of the heat of reaction is measured, and a result of higher precision is obtained. The limitations of the high temperature technique are that volatile systems cannot be studied, and that many alloys melt at temperatures higher than those at which the calorimetric apparatus operates readily. Nevertheless, a calorimeter operating at 1500°K would be useful in investigating many of the lower melting alloy systems and the low melting mixed oxide systems. A unit designed for these applications was built and is described here. The Na-Sn system was chosen for investigation because the temperature involved, 880°K, would adequately test the operation of the calorimeter. Further, the data reported in the literature for the various alloys of sodium and tin differ markedly, and it was hoped that this investigation would help to fix the values of the heats of formation in this system. Design of Apparatus A detailed discussion of the considerations involved in the calorimeter design is given by Mc-Kisson and Bromley,' and a brief summary follows. Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of the calorimeter. The inner graphite chamber is maintained at constant temperature by means of the circulating molten tin bath in which it is submerged. The tin is contained in a graphite vat. This unit comprises a thermostat whose heat capacity is about 7000 cal per "C. The main heating element consists of a machined graphite spiral with a room temperature resistance of about 1/2 ohm. These parts are separated from the powdered carbon external insulation by the cage, a cylindrical graphite chamber. The electrical insulators and separators, the auxiliary heater spool, and the loading tube liner are made of sintered alumina. The tin vat stirrers, the sample stir-rer, the melt thermocouple well, and the power leads are made of molybdenum. The auxiliary heater is wound with molybdenum wire and serves to compensate for the heat loss up the loading tube. All of the individual components in the high temperature region of the calorimeter will withstand at least 2000°K, and the various contacting materials should easily withstand 1500°K. The external container for the insulating carbon powder is a copper shell upon which copper tubes are soldered to serve as cooling coils.

In the quantitative interpretation of the SP logs, the electrochemical component is generally taken equal to — K log Rm /Rw where K has the theoretical value corresponding to solutions of pure sodium chloride. This method may be misleading when relatively large quantities of salts other than NaCl are present in form-rrtion waters—as is generally the case for low salinities —or in gyp-base muds. In such cases recourse is made in the field to changing the K value or to adding a correction term to the equation on the basis of local experience. An investigation has been made in the laboratory of the influence of HCO3, SO4=, Ca++, and Mg++ on the amplitude of the SP deflection, which included in par-ricular determinations of the activity coefficients of Ca++ and Mg++. The theory, the experimental techniques and a tentative method for applying the results are described. So far, applications to actual field cases where chemical analyses of waters were available have provided an excellent confirmation of the proposed method. The case of the SP in very salty brines is also considered and it is shown that the use of activity data for sodium gives satisfactory results. HISTORICAL In early times of electrical logging, the SP curve was used exclusively as a tool for the location of permeable beds and the definition of their boundaries. Later, with the introduction of methods of quantitative analysis, attention was called to the possibility of deriving from the SP log some information on the formation water resistivity, which constitutes one essential element for the computation of water saturation from log data. The first laboratory experiments' in 1932 had shown that, as a result of electrochemical phenomena arising at the contact of the niud and the formation, the amplitude of the deflection of the SP curve was, at least partly, a function of the salt concentration of interstitial water and accordingly of its resistivity. It was indicated that the amplitude of the electrochemical component of the SP should be equal to K log R1/R2, R1 and R2 being the resistivities of the mud and of the formation water respectively. However, the exact value of the K coefficient was not determined at that time because the surface clay used for a laboratory model was far from an ideal shale membrane. Consequently, the way was not yet open towards quantitative interpretation. In the early forties, Tixier reported2, on the basis of field log observations, the following equation for the case of NaCl solutions, SP = -71 log f1c1/f2c2, c1 and c2 being the concentrations and f1, f2 the mean activity coefficients. The local variations observed in the empirical values of K, chiefly in the Rocky Mountains, led him to advance the opinion that, besides the relative amounts, the nature of the salts present in the solutions had a bearing on the magnitude of the SP. At about the same time Mounce and Rust- ad published laboratory results which emphasized the part played by the shale in the generation of the SP. THE only asbestos mine in the Middle East is on the Island of Cyprus, high in the Trodos Mountain village of Amiandos. The mine is owned by the Tunnel Asbestos Cement Co. Annual output is some 18.000 tons of short fibre in the 4-T. 4-Z, and 5-R grades.

In 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northwest of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and LUX. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J. Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Hard as the Revett quartzite are conditions governing the deep mines of the Coeur d'Al6ne. In fourscore years of mining, heat and pressure have been the rewards of preseverance. Such obstacles are the natural concommitant to search for ore at depth. But high cost and shortage of miners is a creeping frustration of the decade. These grim observations were made on a trip to the mines of the Coeur d'Al6ne in the first week of May. But the bouncy optimism of competent mining engineers and geologists overrides by far the tough conditions. This is the story of what they are doing. I think they are setting the stage for the wonder mines of tomorrow. I didn't meet all the people or see all the mines, so there are unfortunate gaps in the story. Then too, sometimes the muck and water blotched my notes, or I couldn't write fast enough or I was too tired. No matter. There is much to tell and, because it is basically a human story, I am flouting the rules of technical journalism and couching it in the neglected "I" person. First then, a little history . . . .
