Ix the summer of 1842 my father, William Firmstone, was engaged by Charles Jackson, Jr., of Boston, to examine the conditions in the Lehigh valley as a site for blast-furnaces using anthracite for fuel. In consequence of his report, he was further engaged by Mr. Jackson to build a furnace for him and his partners on the Lehigh canal, 2 miles above the mouth of the river at Easton. Work was begun in the fall of 1842, and the first furnace blown-in in 1844. The history of the works, therefore, from 1844 to 1887, when my own connection with them ceased, covers only four years less than the whole period of the rise, culmination, and commencement of the decline in the smelting of iron with anthracite in America, the beginning of which, in a commercial sense, may be put in 1839.' Although this paper, as the title indicates, is concerned almost exclusively with the furnaces at Glendon, still what was done there was more or less influenced by current opinion in the dis¬trict, and even reflects, to some extent, the changes in opinion and practice with mineral fuel the world over. No. 1 Furnace was built of red brick, on four piers, had three tuyeres and fore-hearth and tymp, as was universal with furnaces using mineral fuel until the introduction of Liirmann's cinder-tuyere. The dimensions and profile are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The first hearth (Fig. 1) was of sandstone; all after were of fire-brick (Fig. 2). The profile was no doubt derived directly from Gibbons's furnace,2 for it appears from W. Firmstone's note-books that in October, 1840, he visited ." EACH year we gather in this auditorium to honor the memory of a . distinguished American metallurgist and educator. I cannot bring to you reminiscences of Prof. Henry Marion Howe as other lecturers have done. It was not my good fortune to enjoy the privilege of studying and ,working under his direction. As I have reflected on the published works of Professor Howe, it has seemed to me that his mind was trained on the nature of metals and on the mechanism which produced known but unexplained effects. He was interested in controlling and regulating the causes so as to produce specific effects, useful in serving mankind. I recall an afternoon in May, 1925, when, at the invitation of Mrs. Howe, I visited his former home, Green Peace at Bedford Hills, N. Y. The purpose of my visit was to receive at the hands of the widow -an engraving of Professor Howe, a reproduction of a painting from life. Mrs. Howe showed me his study. The walls of this large attractive room, brilliantly illuminated by the spring sunshine, were literally covered with the scrolls of honors and of decorations which had been conferred on Professor Howe by governments, academies, universities, societies and. institutions the world over. As we walked about the room, she pointed out the significance of each honor and recited a few details of each occasion. I sensed the pride with which Mrs. Howe, then in the late autumn of her life, told me of her husbands' achievements, of his struggles, of his disappointments and of his successes. There was a surprisingly familiar note in the recital to which I was listening. I have found the same theme running as a disconnected thread through the written accounts of the lives of most men of science. We then went to the drawing room to chat for a few minutes before I said my farewells. As we seated ourselves, Mrs. Howe turned to me and asked: "Mr. Lucas, what of this great microscope of yours? Cannot it be applied to the study of disease? What a great blessing it would be if it could be directed to relieve the suffering of mankind."

It has been shown by numerous studies that the orientations of new metal crystals are determined by the orientations of the crystals in the original matrix, whether these new crystals are formed by recrystalliza-tion, by precipitation from solid solutions, or by transitions in the solid state. The orientations of crystals formed by recrystallization of cold-worked metals that bear preferred orientations are occasionally simply related to the initial preferred orientation; often, however, the relationship is not simple, but complicated and obscure in origin.1 The orientations of crystals formed by precipitation from solid solutions have been shown by many studies in this and other countries to be determined by the orientation of the crystals of the solid solution stable at the higher temperatures, though here again complicated cases have been found and no general theory is available.2 Related to this latter class are the relationships found in crystals formed by suppressed transforma-

TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

DURING the last 10 years, several grain-growth studies have been made using zone-refined metals with controlled amounts of solute to elucidate the interaction of solute with moving boundaries. In all these studies, it was more or less implicitly assumed that the alloys used were, after recrystallization and grain growth, homogeneous within the grains with respect to solute and lattice defects. This note deals with observations made on microstructures originating from solidification of dilute alloys and from grain growth. Briefly, the experimental procedure used in these studies was the following: zone-refined cadmium and master alloys were melted and cast in Pyrex under vacuum to produce bars 14 mm in diam and about 150 mm long. These bars were cut into 8-mm-thick slices which were mechanically and chemically polished. The specimens were then deformed 30 pct in compression and given a 1-week anneal at 260°C in argon. After this anneal, a second deformation produced completely recrystallized samples 4 mm thick. The time-temperature controlled anneals were carried out in a bath of silicone oil. After the grain-growth anneal, the specimens were polished in Gil-man's' solution (33 g CrOs, 6 g NazSO, in 100 ml of water). Several etches were used depending on the alloy investigated, but mostly a mixture of concentrated HC1 and HNOj (98:2 vol) was employed. In all the alloys examined, the ease with which substructures could be revealed depended strongly on the crystallographic orientation of the surfaces of the grains. However, very frequently the microstructures to be discussed here etched up over broad areas comprising several grains. Fig. 1 is a micrograph of a Cd-0.05 at. pct Mg alloy annealed for 100 sec at 270°C. Different substructures are seen in this photograph. A denotes the now existing grain boundaries. The well-defined lines and points marked B are the remains of a solidification substructure. The lines are boundaries between cell colonies, and the points are nodes located on regular two-dimensional cells. This cellular structure has the same appearance as that found by weinberg2 for rapidly quenched Zn-Au alloys. The "ghost boundaries", marked C, are very similar in appearance to a grain boundary array in a polycrystalline sample. Repeated polishing and etching showed that all the substructures observed were three-dimensional. To date, the ghost boundaries have been clearly observed in all samples containing 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 1 at. pct Mg, and in samples containing 0.01 at. pct Zn. Attempts to outline these ghost boundaries in cadmium alloys containing 0.01 at. pct Ag and Au were only partially successful. In these alloys, parallel lines, having a resemblance to the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Mg and Cd-Zn alloys, were observed, but it was not possible to obtain complete arrays of ghost boundaries which extended over several grains. It is possible that a different etch than that presently employed would reveal the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Au and Cd-Ag alloys as clearly as in the Cd-Zn and Cd-Mg alloys. A close examination of the ghost structure showed that it consisted of linear etch-pit arrays, Fig. 2. The ghost boundaries were resolvable even in grains which showed over-all faceting due to the etching, as seen in the corner of Fig. 2. The general appearance of the ghost structure suggests that it originated during grain growth. This is supported by the observation that the mesh width in the ghost-boundary array generally increased with increasing final grain size. To test whether the ghost structure was formed during the long homogenizing anneal or during the grain-growth anneal, some as-cast samples were deformed and given a grain-growth anneal. It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. In recent investigations,1,2 the strength and thermal stability of dislocation substructures prepared by 5 to 25 pct room temperature tensile straining and recovery annealing at 120°, 160°, and 200°C have been studied in randomly oriented polycrystalline high purity aluminum. The techniques of transmission electron microscopy revealed that a major source of the strength and stability of dislocation substructures was the formation, during room temperature straining, of well-defined cells bounded by dislocation tangles which rearranged into nearly perfect dislocation networks during recovery, forming the boundaries of subgrains. The strength of such substructures increases with decreasing cell or subgrain size,2"6 and the formation of fine subgrain structures can provide thermally metastable strength at low temperatures and can favorably alter the course of primary creep at elevated temperatures.7'8 For maximum benefit, however, sub-grain growth should be reduced or eliminated. It was, therefore, decided to investigate the use of heterogeneous precipitation on dislocation networks as a means of imparting increased strength and thermal stability to subgrain structures through effective pinning. THE following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 191.0. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years ; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C. Spencer 1 has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper on The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared.3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit and to call attention to its commercial importance. LOCATION. The Moa district is situated on the north coast of the . Province of Oriente, which is the most easterly province of the island of Cuba. IN reviewing the field of mineral industry education last year reference was made to recent assertions, mostly emanating from sources not in a position to know the facts, that mining engineers as a class are disappearing. Attention might also then have been called to a statement that appeared in Engineering News, August 11, 1892 (p. 130), ". . . the great absolute decline in number of mining graduates, which last amounts almost to a complete abandonment of mining engineering as a distinct branch of study." TARNISH films on some of the common metals (particularly on copper and silver) have been of much scientific and commercial concern for a long time, but before the development of the electrical method1 of measuring film thicknesses there was no satisfactory quantitative approach by which to study the separate parts of these complex films. This method has been adapted to the measurement of duplex (cuprous-cupric) oxide films on copper .2 In the present work it has been used to measure tarnish films on copper when they were mixtures of cuprous oxide and cuprous sulphide, and also when they contained cuprous oxide, cupric oxide and cuprous sulphide, each component part being measured at a different potential value. Oxide-coated copper specimens, prepared by heating copper in air at chosen temperatures for given periods, were exposed to moist hydrogen. sulphide in air to form the various oxide-sulphide films studied. The comparative resistances afforded by (1) different thicknesses of oxide films, and also (2) equal thicknesses of oxide and sulphide films, against severe attacks of hydrogen sulphide were measured. The electrical method requires that the time be observed for the cathodic reduction of each part of the film substance, and these respective time values multiplied by the constant current give the corresponding quantities of electricity expended. Then each millicoulomb per square centimeter represents a film thickness of T= MX10 8 2D X 96,494 X 103 (a) where M is weight of oxide (or sulphide) giving one gram-atom of oxygen (or sulphur) for cathodic reduction, D is density of the oxide (or sulphide) and t is the thickness in Angström units per millicoulomb per square centimeter. The value of t for cuprous sulphide (cubical) is 14.27, and is obtained by substituting 5.78 for D and 159.20 for M in equation a. Previous values2 of t for cuprous and cupric oxides (12.36 and 6.39, respectively) were used in the present work.

Cylindrical fatigue specimens of OFHC* copper were subjected to alternating torsion while under axial tension. The superimposed tension strongly influenced the fatigue life of the specimens as well as causing characteristic changes in the structure of the fissures that form and develop throughout the life of the specimen. A further effect of the superimposed tension is a continuous extension of the specimen throughout its life in a manner formally similar to creep at elevated temperatures. RECENTLY, studies of the structural changes leading to fracture of metals by fatigue have been made by a technique which reveals, in section, the lattice distortion arising from slip movements inside the metal and the disturbances built up by these slip movements at the metal surface.1'2 According to this approach, fatigue develops as follows: a) fine slip movements concentrate in bands, producing little strain-hardening and thus permitting abnormal totals of plastic strain before fracture and, therefore, abnormal amounts of lattice distortion along each slip band; b) both forward and backward slip movements occur in each band which, according to their distribution across the band, may build up surface disturbances that include sharp notches; c) these notches early in the life of a specimen penetrate the distorted slip zones and transform them into deep, fine fissures; d) the fissures on continued cycling locally saturate the metal and cause local collapse in the form of a microcrack. THIS preliminary report from the Committee to Study Relations Between Students and the Institute is submitted to our member- ship for consideration and discussion before the general subject comes up for action at the Annual Meeting in February. At present, the A. I. M. E. has a dual relationship with mining students, each relationship in no may connected with the other. To the individual student the Institute offers for $2 a year a Student Associateship in the Institute which carries with it a subscription to MINING AND METAL- 'LURGY, a watch fob, and the privilege of becoming a Junior Member after graduation without payment of the -first year's dues, if one's application is accepted. To the student's college society it offers the privilege, upon application, of becoming 'an Affiliated 'Society, which brings with it no specific supervision or aid, and in turn requires no specific conditions as to membership, fees, or rules. This Affiliated Society is distinctly a school organization which Student Associateship in the Institute can he given special status or ignored, is the local .society sees fit.

THE study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by studying the travel times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs at varying distances, major discontinuities in the earth's crust could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called "seismograph" exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we are dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different, in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relatively abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results.

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the 'role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by- the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the constant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.

As expected from similar crystal structures and favorable atomic size factors, titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum are completely soluble in one another above the transformation temperature of titanium. The fl phase parameters of the continuous solid solution are shown graphically. Limiting compositions for retained fl phase have been determined. VANADIUM and molybdenum both have body-centered-cubic structures at all temperatures and, from the atomic diameter comparison factor, 3.9 pct, would be expected to form a complete series of solid solutions. The existence of complete solubility has been confirmed by work' at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Furthermore, vanadium and molybdenum have favorable atomic size factors to form complete binary solid solutions with the B phase, high temperature form of titanium, which also has body-centered-cubic structure. Pietro-kowsky and Duwez' and Hansen et al." have established the existence of the complete series of solutions in these binary systems. It would be logical, therefore, to expect that p-titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum would be completely soluble in one

AN unusually interesting meeting devoted to the discussion of the ways and means of improving coal mining practice, through the larger use of machinery underground, was held in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building on March 11. The meeting was organized by the Materials Handling Division of the A. S. M. E. and held under the auspices of the Metropolitan Section of that Society and the National Coal Association. The New York Section of the A. I. M. E., which had been invited to participate, found itself unable to do so formally because of a conflicting date for its March meeting but informally did its part to aasure the success of the meeting. As a result of the discussion at and preceding the meeting, the National Coal Association, through Walter Barnum, chairman of its research committee, has asked the A. S. M. E. and A. I. M. E. to join the Association in a study of the present problems of the bituminous coal industry. Messrs. Harry L. Gandy, Calvin W. Rice and H. Foster Bain have been selected to act as a committee which shall develop plans for a joint program.
