The literature concerning the remelting of alunlinum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the majority of the papers on this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges, and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remelt-ings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, or others, if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H², O2, H²O, co², CO, CH,, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere m = K vPH² [I] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Rijntgen and Braun4, RÖntgen and M611er5, Bircum-shaw6 and Winterhagerl have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is less than 1.000°C. One obtains: log K = - 4,702.5T + o 238 [2] Besides its usual significance, the term Ph~ represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is1 when no gas exchange Occurs between the two phases, the Pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary Occurs, the quantity of H² should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature decreases, the internal pressure of H² increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a a depending On the hydro- static pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However1 even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. THIS paper covers the operation and maintenance of Diesel locomotives underground on a portion of the Delaware River Aqueduct.[t] This part of the tunnel is r5 miles long, with shafts 14 ft. in diameter spaced about 5 miles apart. These shafts (2, 2a and 3) are 825 ft., 1551 and 840 ft. deep, respectively. The grade of the tunnel is almost level, except for the 12,100 ft. north of shaft 2, which has a grade of 2.31 per cent. The tunnel is circular, 19 to 19 ft. in diameter, It lies at a depth of 400 ft. below sea level, with a maximum overburden of 2400 feet. The tunnel driving was carried on in six headings, using 15 storage-battery locomotive each of 13 gross tons and having a [inum] speed of 8 miles per hour. The longest haul was 3 miles, which proved to be the maximum distance for which storage-battery locomotives could be employed economically for the amount of material to be moved. One locomotive was used for switching cars at each heading, one for switching cars at the bottom of each shaft and one on the main-line haul from the heading to the shaft. The maximum amount of material hoisted in one shaft from two headings when 104 ft. of tunnel was driven in 24 hr. was 1000 cu. yd., or about 2000 tons of rock in place. The total quantity excavated was 950,000 cu. yd. (1,500,000 tons of rock). The tunnel-lining operations using con¬crete presented a problem of hauling a maximum distance of 5 miles in the tunnel. The concrete-placing equipment had a capacity of about 2000 cu. yd., or 4000 tons in 24 hours. Experience had shown that storage-battery equipment could not handle this quantity of material within the time required at the distance of 5 miles, Trolley-locomotive haulage was considered dangerous and expensive, and would cause interference because transmission equipment would be required. Therefore the performance of Diesel locomotives of 160 hp., with a speed of 18 miles per hour, in comparison with that of other types of locomotives, was studied. CHOICE OF LOCOMOTIVES In deciding upon the type of locomotive to be used for the 5-mile haul, four alternatives were considered, as follows: I. To purchase additional storage-battery locomotives with the necessary batteries over the 6 locomotives and 12 batteries available. 2. To convert the existing battery locomotives to the trolley type. 3. To purchase new trolley locomotives. 4. To purchase Diesel locomotives. PROPOSITION No. I The go-hp. storage-battery locomotives available (each weighing about 12 tons), when hauling a load of 64 tons, with a drawbar pull of about 1900 lb. on a level track, developed a speed of 8 miles per hour and could make five round trips in 8 hr. with a

One of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing or the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann.' Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserves especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by P ALo plotting So = 1/A0 as a function of eo = ALr,o where A0 and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors.7'8 It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented P by plotting the average true stress, S = 2P as a function of 6 = q' = log —r = log ~9L where P, A, L, S, E, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximin load point to fracture. The construction of such curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain dificulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. Tan record of the largest magnesium plant in the country utilizing sea water as a primary raw material stands as another victory in the struggle for large-scale production of pure chemical elements from the oceans. Bromine was the first element to be economically and commercially recovered when, in 1933, a six million pound per year unit was built on the Atlantic Coast near Wilmington, North Carolina, by the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Co.1 The bromine was reacted with ethylene to produce ethylene dibromide, a necessary associate of tetraethyl lead in ethyl antiknock fluid. Within eight years that plant was doubled and redoubled, and another large unit was put into operation at Freeport, Texas, taking bromine from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1940, in fortunate anticipation of the impending demand for magnesium and the limitations of the production from natural brines, the Dow Chemical Co. turned again to the sea, and designed and erected a plant at Freeport to produce 18,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year from sea water.2 In March 1941, two months after the new plant had been put into successful operation, construction of an 18,000,000-lb. Government-financed addition was started. Late in 1941, as a part of the $400,000,000 defense program intended to produce 600,000,000 t0 700,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, Dow was asked to build and operate for the Government a 72,000000-lb. plant near its original plant at Freeport. Within a few days after the Japanese made their attack at Pearl Harbor, preparation of a site was started at Velasco, Texas, for the construction of the Texas plant of the Dow Magnesium Corporation-the largest known magnesium plant utilizing sea water as its raw material. Less than six months after the first piling was driven, urgently needed magnesium was in steady production. Five months later, the plant had exceeded its rated capacity. It remained above rated production until the general magnesium curtailment was applied to Government-owned plants in September 1944. Credit for the construction and operation record of the Dow magnesium plant must be divided among the efforts of a very determined group of men, an extremely favorable location, and a simple process. It is with the two latter aspects of the plant that this article will deal. The site for the new enterprise was chosen near Velasco, Texas, on property bordering the Brazos River at a point approximately 6 miles inland from the original magnesium plant and y miles inland from the Freeport Harbor on the Gulf of Mexico. This location was far enough away from the operating units to reduce both interference from construction and the vulnerability of closely bunched manufacturing operations to the then feared air attack. Yet the distance inland was not too great for the economical construction of a barge canal from the harbor to serve both the transportation of raw

The importance of measuring the temperature of molten steel in the open-hearth furnace has been recognized for many years. Poor temperature control may be costly to steelmaking operations and lead to a lowered quality of the steel. Low or excessive temperatures may shorten the life of the furnace, ladles and molds. Rates of reactions in the furnace and efficiencies of deoxidizers are known to change materially with a change in the temperature of the metal and slag. Ladle skulls and mold and stool stickers cause steel to be scrapped instead of being converted into useful products. Finally, the structure, segregation and surface condition of ingots are affected by the teeming temperature. Mill investigations of the effect of bath temperature upon steelmaking operations have been largely qualitative in character, based upon observations by practical melting men. The physical chemist has used the empirical information available and has reached reasonable and useful conclusions with respect to the various melting processes. The introduction of a reliable direct-reading pyrometer will permit accurate quantitative evaluation of the effects of temperature and should furnish a more rational basis for study of the thermochemistry of steelmaking. The problem is not merely one of making a small numbcr of temperature measurements in the open-hearth furnace. Considerable effort by a number of investigators has been directed rather to the development of an open-hearth bath pyrometer that would be both accurate and practical for routine measurements. To be practical, the pyrometer should be inexpensive to operate; that is, the installation, operating and maintenance costs should be exceeded by the tangible benefits to the open-hearth operator. Temperatures from 2800' to 3100°F. are. encountered in the open-hearth furnace. The surface of the molten metal is covered by several inches of slag, which prevents direct observation of the metal surface for optical or radiation measurements. Both slag and metal are highly reactive at these temperatures and will attack to a greater or lesser extent any material immersed in them. Adequate protectioil of thermocouples, which of necessity must be brought to the temperature of the bath, has generally resulted in a large, heavy assembly made up of brittle materials, unsuited for handling on the open-hearth floor. The life of the equipment was short and maintenance was an important consideration. Earlier Work Any of a number of Physical Properties of liquid steel could conceivably be used a a basis for temperature measurement. Efforts to the present time, however, have been confined largely to measuring either the thermal electromotive force generated between two dissimilar materials immersed in the steel or the intensity of radiation from the surface of the steel. The curriculum presented here is an outgrowth of discussions by the Committee on Geophysics Courses of the A.I.M.E. in previous years. It had to be a compromise between the desires voiced by employers of geophysicists, professional geophysicists and the possibilities at an average college. There one has to face the questions of the available teaching staff, the inertia of administrators and teachers set in their ways, and the red tape involved in modernizing antiquated curricula. It is, of course, not ideal to have colleges and universities lag Io years behind the times. Rather, instead of being prodded by industry, they should be ahead of industrial needs. There should also be a certain amount of leeway for the student in any college curriculum. All these points had to be considered in drawing up a curriculum, which, instead of being narrowly termed "geology" or "geophysics" was rather called "earth science." It gives the student a chance to specialize in one of the various branches represented by teachers on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State College, giving as options Geology (with subdivisions of Mineralogy and Paleontology), Geophysics, Geography, and Meteorology. Table iA represents the option of geophysics in the curriculum that envisages that a student may want to make his career in any of the fields encompassed by the American Geophysical Union or in geoexploration. This is, of course, only the start of an education that in most cases will have to be followed by graduate work for complete professional training. The outlined curriculum is definitely of an engineering type and is identical for all of the four options mentioned for the first two years. Specialization will start in the junior year but even thereafter the branches are kept as closely allied as feasible in order to permit a student to change from one tO the other (e.g., because of a different aspect in the mployment situation) with a minimum of additional work. Table IB shows the geophysics option according to subject matter, indicating the considerable amount of work in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and chemistry with a liberal number of geology courses, and some engineering. The courses in the field of geophysics are limited—just two lecture courses as a general introduction and one field course, to permit the student a visualization of the correlation between mathematically analyzed physical data and the geological realities. Thesis work is considered essential to teach the student, while he is still in college, some things S. F. Kelly has mentioned as desirable: (I) following of instructions for somewhat independent work; (2) organizing of material, and (3) producing a readable report. This, together with the personal contact with the advising faculty member, will help in forming a student's personality. The seminar course attempts to get the student into the habit of reading current literature, so that he can keep abreast of the times.

A procedure for determining the behavior of a reservoir under a gas or water injection program was reported by Buckley and Levertt in 1942.1 This method, which allowed the calculation of the phase saturation distribution behind the front of a displacing fluid, has been extended to apply to a more general situation. The reservoir may initially contain flowing quantities of the displacing fluid, or the fluid in the reservoir may be above saturation pressure SO that solution effects are present. Production may occur behind the front as in the case of a well which is produced after breakthrough of the displacing fluid. The calculating procedure is simplified in that the graphical integration necessary to determine breakthrough saturation is eliminated by performing a direct integration and the graphical differentiation necessary to determine saturation distribution is eliminated by representing the displacing phase fraction of the flowing stream by an empirical equation. This representation results in simple expressions for the producing gas or water/oil ratio and cumulative production. INTRODUCTION A method for the calculation of the saturation distribution behind the front (interface between the displaced and displacing phases in a gas injection or water flooding operation) was reported by Buckley and Leverett in 1942. The method leads to a curve for the saturation distribution which is double-valued; consequently, part of' the curve was interpreted to be physically meaningless. That part of the curve which has physical significance was determined by a graphical integra-tion (material balance). In this paper it is shown that the integration may be performed analytically with a resulting equation for the saturation of the displacing phase at the front. The case in which the displacing fluid is initially flowing and the case in which the reservoir is initially above the saturation pressure so that some injected gas goes into solution are included in the integration. The calculations are considerably simplified by representing the fraction of the flowing stream which is oil by an exponential function of saturation. The methods is extended to apply approximately to reservoirs in which wells located between the injection well and the front are produced. An illustrative example utilizing the methods presented is included. Single-crystal films of boron have been prepared by thermal reduction of purified BCl3 with subsequent deposition of boron onto oriented silicon substrates. The structural properties of films prepared under various experimental conditions have been determined by light microscopy and "grazing-" angle electron-diffraction analysis. An orientation relationship is proposed for silicon and a-rhombo-heclral boron which can be described as: (111)Si (112)B; [110]Si [110]B ElEMENTAL boron is known to have a high energy gap* and consequently has potential value as a high- *Energy gaps of 1.35 to 1.55 ev1-3 and 2.0 ev4 are reported for ß-rhombohedra1 and a-rhombohedra1 boron, respectively. temperature semiconductor.5 Exploitation of this property, however, has been hampered by the unavailability of pure, single-crystal boron. Two recent symposia6,7 have treated the subjects of purification, crystallization, crystal structure, and properties of boron and provide a foundation for further investigation in these areas. The structure, lattice constants, and observed ranges of stability for four reported polymorphs of boron8°12 are listed in Table I. The rhombohedral structures are generally accepted as true polymorphs whereas the tetragonal structures are believed to be transient. Most currently available single crystals of boron are grown by Czochralski and floating-zone methods. Unfortunately, these crystals generally contain numerous defects and are highly strained as a result of the polymorphic transformations and thermal contractions which accompany cooling. Recently, Armington, Potter, and Tanner13 have reported the formation of single-crystal films of boron on silicon single-crystal substrates through thermal reduction of BC13 by hydrogen. Boron E. T. PETERS, Junior Member AIME, is Senior Scientist, ManLabs, Inc., Cambridge, Mass., and W. D. POTTER is Research Chemist, Air Force Cambridge Research Loboratories, L. G. Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass. formed at temperatures near 1000°C was identified as the a-rhombohedra1 form, consistent with expectation. The present paper describes a continuation of this work with specific reference to characterization of the structural features of the deposited boron films. The ultimate goal of this program is to produce large-area single-crystal films of a-rhombohedra1 boron to be used for electrical and optical studies by other workers. PREPARATION OF BORON FILMS The experimental procedure of preparing thin films is similar to that described by Theuerer14 for the epitaxial growth of silicon by thermal reduction of SiC14 and has already been described as applied to the preparation of boron thin films.13 Briefly, a mixture of BCl3 vapor and dry hydrogen is passed over a heated silicon substrate. Thin foil electron microscopy techniques have been used to study the micros tructure of a Ti- 7.5 wt pct vanadium alloy in the quenched and aged cond_itions. Selected area diffraction has identified a (1011) twinning mode accompanying the martens ite t9.an.sfo?rn~ation. Precipitation of the 0 phase during the aging of quenched alloys has been obsevced to occuv in the form of plates and needles with preferential growth along the (1120) direction in the a' matrix. In the present work, the micro structures of quenched and aged alloys of the 0 isomorphous Ti-V system have been investigated by means of thin-foil electron-microscopy techniques. Most of the previous studies of martensitic phases in titanium-base alloys have utilized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The application of transmission electron microscopy is more recent, and only a few such studies have been reported.1-5 This paper is concerned particularly with the crystallographic nature of substructures formed in the martensitic a' plates. The early stages of aging or tempering have also been examined to determine the modes of precipitation from the martensitic solid solutions. Such information is essential in studying strengthening mechanisms and in determining the feasibility of high-strength rnartensitic alloys based on titanium. Liu and Margolin6 reported several types of substructures within the martensitic plates of quenched Ti-Mn alloys. It was later suggested by Liu7 that the structure of martensitic plates might be very complex and not single crystals as normally assumed. The sub-markings could not be identified with the two possible habit-plane orientations {334}ß and {344}ß, and it was not positively determined whether they are associated with mechanical twinning. The recent studies by Armitage5 on titanium martensites in a variety of commercial alloys have indicated that twinning does not generally accompany the transformation. This observation is in accordance with the Mackenzie and Bowles model for the transformation in pure titanium8 which suggests that twinning is not to be expected. However, a number of other recent investigators have reported twinlike substructures in the martensitic plates of several titanium systems including commercia1 titanium,2,3 Ti-Cu,5,9 Ti-Ta,1 and the commercial alloy Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V. Blackburn* has reported that the structure of quenched Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V depends on the prior solution temperature. He identified two types of martensitic structures, one of which is described as a heavily faulted hcp or twinned fcc structure and the other an hcp structure with a high internal dislocation density. The latter type exhibited some twinning with a (1011) twin plane. A few years ago Marsal published a method of predicting oil recovery as a function of time for an edge-water-drive reservoir with several rows of wells.' The method is based solely on oil- and water-production data obtained during a short period for the first row of wells and the gross productions (past and future) of all wells. This paper presents a streamlined version of the original publication and experimental evidence showing the reliability of this version. For this purpose scaled experirnents were performed in a large model (750 X 500 X 23 cm, 24.4 ft X 16.2 ft X 8.9 in.) in which edge-water-drive reservoirs with three rows of production wells were simulated. From the results of the experiments it is concluded that the method gives a fairly accurate prediction of the future production behavior of the reservoir and enables us to select the most profitable production plan. Results obtained with the method were always slightly conservative. INTRODUCTION The calculation method developed by Marsal aims at forecasting future reservoir behavior.' It can be applied to floods in which a number of down-dip wells are rapidly going to water. Essentially it is a method for predicting the future behavior of the up-structure wells on the basis of the observed behavior of the down-structure wells. As such, the method is especially useful for predicting behavior of edge-water drives toward several rows of wells. The requirement to be met for justifying the approach is identity of production mechanism in all regions of the reservoir. The attraction of the method then lies in the fact that it applies even when we have no complete description of the prevailing production mechanism. The original publication was in the German language and for this reason, perhaps, did not attract widespread attention. In our opinion it deserves to do so because it does offer in a simple way results which are in fair agreement with observed data. The aim of the present paper is to bring the method to the attention of a wider audience. The method in its most simplified form is reviewed and experimental data in support of it are presented. PRINCIPLES To show Marsal's principle. we will first write the continuity equation for very simple conditions, linear flow (in the positive x-direction) in an incompressible porous body [cross-section A(x), porosity +(x)], saturated with incompressible fluids (oil saturation S). When the oil in this formation is displaced by water, injected at x = 0 (inlet face), we get where q(t) is the total gross displacement rate and f the fractional oil flow. The equation can be solved if we make the assumptions: (1 ) that the fractional oil flow (f) is a univalent function of saturation (S); and (2) that the function is the same throughout the porous medium. In 1856 Henry Darcy described in an appendix to his book, Les Fontaines Publiques de la Ville de Dijon, a series of experiments on the downward flow of water through filter sands, whereby it was established that the rate of flow is given by the equation: q= - K(h2- h2)/I1 in which q is the volume of water crossing unit area in unit time, I is the thickness of the sand, h1 and h2 the heights above a reference level of the water in manometers terminated above and below the sand, respectively, and K a factor of proportionality. This relationship, appropriately, soon became known as Darcy's law. Subsequently many separate attempts have been made to give Darcy's empirical expression a more general physical fornzulation, with the result that .so many mutually inconsistent expressions of what is purported to he Darcy's law have appeared in published literature that sight has often been lost of Darcy's own work and of its significance. In the present paper, therefore, it shall be our purpose to reinform ourselves upon what Darcy himself did, and then to determine the meaning of his results when expressed explicitly in terms of the pertinent physical variables involved. This will be done first by the empirical method used by Darcy himself, and then by direct derivation from the Navier-Stokes equation of motion of viscous fluids. We find in this manner that: q = (N4(p/p)[g - (l/p) gradPI = WE, is a physical expression for Darcy's law, which is valid for liquids generally, and for gases at pressures higher than about 20 atmospheres. It is found also that Darcy's law is valid only for flow velocities such that the inertial forces are negligible as compared with those arising from viscosity. In general, three-dimensional space there exist two superposed physical fields: a field of force of charucteristic vector E, and a field of flow of vector q. The force field is more general than the flow field since it has values in all space capable of being occupied by the fluid. IN most reactions involving solids the transformation kinetics may be represented by the combination of two processes-those of nucleation and of growth. For example, Mehl and his coworkers 1,2 in their studies on the transformation of austenite to pearlite in steels have been able to describe the kinetics in terms of the rates of nucleation and of growth. By micrographic examination of their specimens they determined the nucleation rate (rate of appearance of pearlite colonies) as a function of time, of percent transformation, and of temperature. They observed that after an incubation period in which no nuclei are observed, the number of nuclei appearing per unit time per unit of untransformed grain boundary area, increases at an increasng rate with time. When recrystallization rates have been interpreted in terms of rates of nucleation and growth and the rate of nucleation determined, an incubation period followed by an increasing rate of nucleation has also been reported. Among the studies in which this phenomenon has been observed are those of Kornfeld and coworkers3 on cold-drawn aluminum wire, of Anderson and Mehl4 on the recrystallization of aluminum sheet, and of Stanley and Mehl5 on the recrystallization of silicon ferrite sheet. The existence of an incubation period during which no nuclei are observed does not appear to have been reconciled with the generally accepted Volmer-Becker theory of nucleation in condensed systems. This theory ostensibly requires the rate of appearance of nuclei to be independent of time. VOLMER-BECKER THEORY In order to form a stable nucleus of a new phase B in a mother phase A, the molecules or atoms of the mother phase must surmount a free energy barrier whose height is determined by the volume free energy change accompanying the transformation and the energy of the surface separating the two phases. The free energy difference between nuclei of various sizes and the molecules or atoms of the mother phase is plotted schematically in Fig I as a function of the radius of the nucleus r. This free energy difference is plotted for two values of the change of free energy per atom, (fB - fA) accompanying the transformation when the volumes of the two phases are infinite. One of these values of (fa-fA) corresponds to a temperature above the temperature To at which the phases A and B are in equilibrium, and the other to a temperature below To. In order for a nucleus of phase B to be stable at a temperature T2 < To, its radius must be equal to or greater than the critical value r* for which the free energy of formation of the nucleus is a maximum, ?f*. Aggregates of phase B having radii equal to or less than r* will be called embryos. Mehl and Jetter,6 in discussing the kinetics of nucleation in solid systems, suppose that embryos of critical size are formed

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties. Many of these small companies don&apos;t have the financial resources to pay for development costs from their own funds and frequently they do not even have the financial strength to permit them to borrow the money needed for development. A project financing can sometimes be arranged in such a way as to solve this dilemma. A typical project financing will not provide the answer to the "little guy&apos;s" problem because most project financings require that the sponsors of the project provide completion undertakings and sometimes other undertakings. These undertakings are often a prerequisite to obtaining financing, and if the sponsor is not financially strong enough to provide the comfort that the lenders require, then the sponsor will have difficulty obtaining financing no matter what undertakings are offered. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a project financing can sometimes provide the solution to the small mining company&apos;s problem. The Strathcona Sound Project is unusually suited as a case study because the sponsor, Mineral Resources International Limited,(MRI) was able to arrange a project financing for the development of the project even though the lenders probably would not have been willing to loan a similar amount of money direct to MRI based on the full faith and credit of MRI&apos;s balance sheet. The way that MRI was able to arrange this financing makes for an interesting story. THE CASE In early 1974, MRI owned 100% of a small to medium sized zinc - lead - silver massive sulfide deposit (Property) located 475 miles north of the Arctic Circle less than two miles from deep water on Strathcona Sound which is a shipping zone in the Canadian Arctic. The Property was situated at a desolate location except for an Eskimo settlement (Arctic Bay) which was about 20 miles west of the Property. In other words, the project required that complete infrastructure would need to be installed in this far northern location. Independent reserve and feasibility studies (Study) had been completed on the Property which confirmed a total of 6,825,000 tons of reserves classified and summarized as shown below on Table I: [ ] These reserves were based on 229 diamond drill holes totalling 58,909 feet and were established on a cut-off grade of 7% zinc and a minimum mining height of seven feet. The overall mining recovery rate was estimated at not less than 85% and not more than 90%. The feasibility study indicated that it would cost an estimated $45,044,000 to develop an underground mine, a concentrator, a town-site, a power plant, storage facility, loading dock, a tailings disposal area and an airstrip on the Property with an annual capacity of 525,000 tons of ore per year. The construction period was expected to take two years and projected capital costs were broken down as set forth below on Table II:

The method of Caldwell and Babbitt for detennining Bingham plastic rheological constants from engineering pipe flow data has been erroneously used in many previous applications. A reanalysis of extensive pipe flow data from the literature is performed. Critical Reynolds numbers corresponding to the laminar-turbulent transition calculated from these data are found to agree with theoretically calculated values for the entire flow range studied. Similar agreement is found for the authors&apos; own data&apos; for flow of 10 slurries between parallel plates. The Bingham plastic model is shown to be a reliable representation of the flow of non-Newtonian slurries provided it is properly applied. If the Hedstrom number He = pD2 t0/?2 > 104, then the linear approximation method of Caldwell and Babbitt is invalid for pipe flow data obtained in systems of ordinary engineering interest, and the complete nonlinear form of the pipe flow Bingham plastic equation must be used in determining rheological parameters. INTRODUCTION Many materials of engineering interest must be handled and transported as slurries or suspensions of insoluble particulate matter in a Newtonian liquid. These suspensions frequently exhibit non-Newtonian rheological behavior which is reasonably well described by the simple Bingham plastic rheological equation1 Using this particular equation to describe the laminar flow characteristics of slurries was discussed at length by Caldwell and Babbitt2-4 who considered the flow of various clay slurries and sewage sludges. The model has since been used by many others.5-7 More recently the problem of predicting the laminar turbulent transition Reynolds number for Bingham plastic fluids has been treated8 for the case of flow in pipes. This paper points out errors which have existed in the analysis of Bingham plastic flow since the work of Caldwell and Babbitt2-4 and presents a reanalysis of the laminar turbulent transition calculatiod for Bingham plastic flow in pipes. In addition, new data obtained for flow of Bingham plastic slurries between parallel plates, both in laminar flow and in the laminar turbulent transition region, will be presented and compared with the theoretical analysis of laminar turbulent transition for flow between parallel plates. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS PIPE FLOW The mathematical analysisl-4 of laminar flow of a Bingham plastic fluid leads to the following equation. where q = <v>/R is a pseudoshear rate, rw is the wall shear stress Eo = r0/rw, r0 is the yield stress and 1 is the coefficient of rigidity or plastic viscosity from Eq. 1. In studying the possibilities of a continuously recording magnetometer for use along the surface of the earth and in an airplane, the Federal Bureau of Mines was led to a study of the theoretical resolving power of magnetic observations, both in the variation of the total magnetic intensity and in each of the two cornponents ordinarily measured. Along with this general study, an attempt was made to determine the relative worth of the total intensity anomaly and the vertical anomaly in geophysical prospecting. Genera1 considerations led to three conclusions: I. In the northern magnetic hemisphere of the earth, the total intensity anomaly is offset to the south of the vertical anomaly, for a positive anomaly (see Appendix, note 1). 2. The resolving power of magnetic observations decreases rapidly with distance from the disturbing body. 3. The horizontal anomaly has little value in prediction of the disturbing body but might be useful in making a choice between bodies suggested by the vertical or total anomaly. Some of the considerations leading to these conclusions were: I. The normal intensity and the anomalous intensity are vectorially additive; hence for a positive anomaly in the northern magnetic hemisphere the total intensity will be a maximum at some point south of the disturbing body and north of the point at which the line to the disturbing body is parallel to the normal earth&apos;s field. The anomaly itself has a maximum value directly above the body. For a positive anomaly of constant magnitude, the total intensity will be a maximum when the anomaly vector is parallel to the normal vector. This is shown schematically in Fig. I (not to scale) for a magnetic distribution not restricted to a relatively thin sheet in the magnetic meridian. The normal field has a magnitude 10 with vertical component V0 and horizontal component Ho. Six station points along a traverse across the body from south to north are shown at M to S. At each of these stations the normal magnetic field vector terminates at F. At each of these stations the magnetic field vector due to the disturbing body B terminates at A. The line through the station point and the point A passes through B. The magnitude of the anomaly, indicated by the length of the vector terminating at A, is proportional to some power of the distance from the station point to the disturbing body. If the disturbing body B is a concentrated point of magnetic material, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse second power of the distance. For a uniform magnetic distribution over a line perpendicular to the observed traverse, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse first power of the distance.
