Chalcocite flotation is affected by agitation intensity during conditioning. Sodium sulphide in minute quantity may activate or depress, depending on conditions. Oxygen is a depressant while oxygen and sulphide neutralize each other by re-action at the mineral surface. Diffusion across a stagnant film at the surface governs reaction rates, while film thickness is reduced upon increase of agitation intensity.

EARLY in the month of August, 1877, a miner in Gold Hill, Nevada, made the unlucky remark that, according to his observation, that month was usually quite free from accidents in the mines. Never was presage wider from the truth. When the month closed twelve mishaps had occurred, killing six and wounding nine persons, and for the rest of that year the Comstock mining communities were kept in a ferment by the frequent occurrence of appalling disasters. There was a real tidal wave of calamity sweeping over the mines, which has not been repeated since, and according to common report was never known before on the Comstock. I was much interested in studying the character of these misfortunes, which also aroused concerted action on the part of the miners, and I have collected a list of the accidents which took place from July, 1877, to May, 1879. Availability of large-scale high field/high gradient magnetic separators during the past five years allows applications of magnetic separation to feebly paramagnetic materials which have been considered nonmagnetic in the past. Technology is now available for magnetically attracting not only feebly magnetic compounds of iron such as hematite and pyrite, but also hundreds of compounds of nonferromagnetic elements such as copper, tin, uranium, vanadium. Besides enabling novel separation of industrial minerals, metallic ores, and coal, the new technology also can be used in effluent treatment, catalyst cleanup, and purification of chemicals.

A successful engineering structural design often depends upon a thorough understanding of the material properties of the structure. It is no exception when designing a supporting system for stable underground openings. For this reason, studies were made in the deep mines of the Coeur d'Alene mining district to obtain engineering properties of rocks and rock masses immediately surrounding underground openings. In this paper, data concerning laboratory tested physical properties of rocks and in-situ deformation behavior of rock masses from the Galena, Lucky Friday, and Silver Summit mines of the district are presented. Interpretations of the data so obtained and suggestions for the use of the results of the investigations as design criteria are also outlined.

In August 1957, a cutter suction dredge started the removal of overburden from a bauxite deposit near Paranam, Surinam (formerly Dutch Guiana), South America. This event marked the climax of a program of investigation, design and construction which lasted almost five years. Cutter-suction dredges are used predominantly for harbor and river work, and land reclamation. While they have been utilized to remove overburden from ore bodies, notably at Steep Rock, Ontario, and Black Lake, Quebec, the conditions under which one is being used for this purpose in Surinam are unusual. Paranam is a mining town built by Suriname Aluminum Company, a subsidiary of Aluminum Company of America. It is located on the Surinam River, about 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The bauxite mining, drying and shiploading facilities have been in operation since 1941.

In a report upon the geology of Ledville and vicinity, which is till in the hands of the Public Printer, I hare given, at some length, my conclusions as to the genesis of the remarkable silver-lead deposits of that region, and the data, gathered during a long and careful consideration, upon which my views were founded. In the brief abstract of this report, published in 1881, the bare conclusions are given, with but few of the facts upon which they were founded. Since that time, these conclusions have been variously criticized, and it has even beer] assumed that the views I expressed with regard to these deposits were intended as a theory of ore-deposits in general.

Those who have observed the influence of various elements upon cast-iron will be interested in the methods used by us to form the several series of test-bars, which form the basis of the conclusions presented in this paper. We found that we could not, by adding ordinary white stickphosphorus to molten iron, produce bars which would exhibit to the eye the peculiar influence of phosphorus. By melting wrought-iron drillings with red phosphorus, Mr. H. S. Fleming produced in his laboratory 10 pounds of phosphide of iron, containing 10.22 per cent. of phosphorus. With this we made two series of test-bars, the first with our white-base iron, and the second with our FLM gray-base iron. INTRODUCTION Direct reduction of iron ores has unquestionably become established as an important step in the worldwide steelmaking industry. The history of this development has been long and fraught with difficulty. In 1800, Champlain suggested the direct reduction concept using carbon and a shallow hearth vessel. Roughly 100 years later, Jones attempted a commercial process using carbon and producer gas in a rotary kiln. During the early years of this century, numerous attempts were made to start commercial direct reduction plants using such processes as Hoganas, Wiberg, Krupp-Renn, and others. Most of these were short lived, being abandoned due to a variety of technical and economical factors. Today, however, a new generation of direct reduction processes has emerged. We enter 1977 with at least 40 commercial plants in operation using 15 processes in 14 countries. These plants have combined total annual capacity of roughly 10 million tonnes of direct reduced product. Many articles have been written, and projections made, concerning the future growth potential for direct reduction. As is al- ways the case with projections, the numbers vary, but the outlook does not. Anyone who participated in the years of effort that have gone into this field of endeavor should be excited and justly rewarded by noting the shape of the curve in Figure 1.

The performance of the nine 5.5 m diameter x 6.4 m mills (18 x 21 ft) initially installed at Bougainville Copper Ltd. did not meet the laboratory and pilot plant derived design expectations as measured by Bond Work Index. During the post-commissioning period, inefficient grinding of coarse material resulted in a build-up of large circulating loads and led to reduced throughputs because of pump and cyclone overloading. Installation of larger pumps and cyclones and development of an improved circuit control philosophy alleviated materials handling problems and permitted higher tonnages to be attained. Since 1977, plant throughput has been increased by installation of three additional mills. These are 0.9 m (2.9 ft) longer than the other nine and have a higher capacity. Developments in classification and mill speed-up, together with a finer ball mill feed size and substantial improvements to mill availability (99% in 1982) have further increased plant capacity. There is a continuing emphasis on improving grinding circuit efficiency in terms of throughput/grind. Current development work includes trials of graded ball charges, different liner profiles, and assessment of scalping/regrind proposals.

Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]
