INTRODUCTION Mount Isa mine is a major producer of both copper and lead-zinc- silver ores. During the 1975/76 year, 4.3 million tonnes of copper ore were extracted at an average grade of 3.4%, and 2.4 million tonnes of lead-zinc-silver ore at average grades of 7.0%, 6.7% and 173 grams per tonnes respectively. Systematic lead-zinc mining has continued for just over 45 years and copper mining for just over 30 years. Virtually all mining is underground. The composite and somewhat schematic longitudinal section of Figure 1 shows the overall distribution of ore at the Mount Isa mine. The mine can be roughly divided into two parts about a central shaft complex: to the north there is predominantly lead-zinc ore and to the south there is copper ore. Underground operations are serviced by three shafts in the central shaft complex (P61, R62 andU62) and another to the south in the copper mining area (X41). Mining is spread over a total strike length of 2.9 km and extends to a depth of 960 m. Currently, lead-zinc ore is being extracted between 15 and 11 levels and is hauled to the central ore-hoisting shaft on 13 and 15 levels. Copper ore is being extracted between19 and 13 levels and is hauled to the central shafts on 19 level. The principal lead-zinc mining methods used now, as they have been over the last ten years, are sublevel open stoping and cut-and- fill stoping, with about equal tonnages of ore from each (Figure 2). Since about 1970, there have been several interesting developments in lead-zinc mining methods and procedures, principally: • the development of an effective method for the recovery of pillars between open stopes and • the evolution of safer and more productive cut-and- fill methods. The safety data presented in this paper are based upon replies to a Questionnaire sent out to representative mining companics. The authors feel that it is a fair cross section of the milling industry, in that the 17 companies, of the United States and Canada, reporting on 22 mills, are scattered from the Hudson Bay to the Mexican border and from coast to coast. These data concern the accident records of the various plants from 1939 to 1944, inclusive and the six years are divided into two periods. The first period (1939, 1940 and 1941) represents something of a normal operating condition. The second period (1942, 1943 and 1944) represents the period of time that was most affected by war conditions. During the second period there was a high labor turnover, inexperienced workers were numerous, women replaced men in many kinds of work, a labor shortage existed more or less throughout the industry, and supervision was pushed for peak production. All of the companies reporting compiled their accident experiences for these six years in accordance with the standards set up by the American Standards Association (New York, N. Y.), consequently the tabu lated data presented herein are comparable. The authors of this paper feel that the industry as a whole is greatly indebted to the personnel of the companies that furnished these data, which make this study possible for presentation. This survey covers a total exposure of 74,528,880 man-hours, with 105,471 man-days of lost time from 870 accidents. Safety Records In Table I, the safety record is shown of the various mills reporting. The severity rate is usually conceded to be the most vital statistical figure in safety parlance, therefore the participating companies are listed in order of their severity rate for the combined six-year period, under size of organizatiori. The table also shows the frequency rate as well as the frequency-severity ratio (F/S). As noted in Table I, most of the companies suffered an increase in both severity and frequency rates during the second period; only six of the 22 enjoyed an improvement. From correspondence with the various plants, it seems that a few had very little labor shortage or turnover, and these were not greatly affected. A few plants, anticipating the situation, strengthened their training facilities and actually were able to show a better experience during the second period. This gives great credence to the value of organized training in any safety program. The frequency-severity ratio (F/S) shown in the last column of Table I offers

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals throughout the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data from test site and laboratory indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. These low order or "transient" velocities were believed to originate because of inadequate primer strength or a primer diameter to column diameter mismatch. However, the nature of this experimental work was generally confined to small diameter column charges detonated in iron pipe simulated bore-holes. It was questionable whether the smaller scale laboratory data was applicable to large 12 1/4 and 15-in. boreholes.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a process for removing SO2 from stack gases. The process comprises absorption of SO2 in an. aqueous solution of sodium citrate, citric acid, and sodium thiosulfate, followed by reaction of the absorbed SO2 with H2S to precipitate sulfur and regenerate the citrate solution for recycle. A pilot plant was operated at The Bunker Hill Co. lead smelter in Kellogg, Idaho, to assess the feasibility of using the process for flue gas desulfurization. Nominal capacity of the pilot plant, which treated .tail gas from the lead smelter sintering furnace, was 1699 standard meters cubed per hour (15 degrees celsius) of 0.3- to 0.7-percent-SO2 gas yielding about 272 net kilograms of sulfur per day. The pilot plant was operated for about 4500 hours and produced more than 45 net tonnes of sulfur. The operation demonstrated that (1) more than 95 percent of the SO2 could be removed from the lead smelter sintering furnace tail gases, (2) regeneration of the citrate solution with H2S and precipitation of sulfur in conventional stirred vessels was readily controlled and highly efficient, (3) the precipitated sulfur could be continuously recovered as a 99.5-percent-pure product by kerosine flotation and melting, and (4) the 77- to 79-percent-H2S gas used for sulfur precipitation could be readily produced from pilot plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam. Projected operating costs, including capital charges, for a citrate plant, installed at a 118 000-tonne-per-year lead smelter and treating 49 271 standard meters cubed per hour of lead smelter sintering furnace tail gas, are estimated to be $384 per tonne of sulfur.

Being a portion of the President's Address at New Haven, February 23d, 1875. As I have attempted briefly to show you, gentlemen, the present position of the mining and metallurgical industries of this country offers in several respects most important indications of radical change. This is an epoch for more than one branch of these industries. We are commencing again to export copper; we have shifted the main production of lead from the Mississippi Valley to the far West, besides developing a new production of that metal in Missouri; we have seen the price of quicksilver go up, and the price of iron go down to such an extent as to affect profoundly, on the one hand, the great business of extracting silver by amalgamation, through the Washoe process in this country and the patio process in Mexico, and, on the other hand, the various manufactures employing iron as a raw material ; above all, the manufacture of steel. But the epoch which has occurred in the relative value of gold and silver, in consequence of causes which I shall attempt to explain, and among which the extraordinary increase in the silver product of Nevada is not the least ; this epoch is, perhaps, the most striking feature in the review of our situation. Since my official duties in connection with the mining industry of the Pacific slope and the Great Interior Basin have led me to pay particular attention to this subject, I have thought it not inappropriate to lay before you a somewhat extended account of its history. It is a topic of peculiar interest, because of the general use of these two metals as standards of value in the exchange of commodities. Petroleum has been found in Russia in various localities from north to south, as may be seen from the list given below: (a) In the basin of the Petchora river, Northern Russia. (b) In the basin of the Volga river, in the governments of Samara and Saratoff. (c) In the government of Astrakhan and in the Uralsk territory, close to the northern and eastern coast of the Caspian sea. (d) At Grozny in Northeastern Caucasus. (e) In the Daghestan territory, Eastern Caucasus, on the Caspian sea. (f) On the Apsheron peninsula (Baku and other districts) close to the Caspian sea shore. (g) On the island of Tcheleken in the caspiah sea, also on the island of Sviatoi. (h) In the Transcaspian territory on the Neftianaia Gora (Oil hill) and on the surrounding hills. (i) In the Ferghana valley in Russian Central Asia. (j) On the Kertch-and Taman peninsulas on the Black sea. (k) In Siberia it has been discovered in the Transbaikal territory and on the island of Sakhalin.. ' ' In the above-mentioned districts petroleum has been found to exist under different geological conditions and to vary in its chemical and physical properties. At the present time petroleum is produced in Russia at Baku, Grozny, on the island of Tcheleken, in the Ferghana district, and in the Uralsk territory. The yearly production in 1912 throughout the Russian Empire amounted to 69,400,000 barrels, of which the Baku fields were responsible for 52,000,000 barrels. This shows that the Balm fields on the Apsheron peninsula are the chief oil-producing centers in Russia, being at the same time the oldest of all our oil fields. In this paper I shall discuss the Baku fields only, leaving all the others until a later date. The Apsheron peninsula in the Eastern Caucasus protrudes into the Caspian sea in the shape of a triangle some 47 miles long covering a total area of some 750 square miles. Several disastrous and a great number of near-disastrous mine fires have been started by igniting the combustible conductor insulation and outer covering of trailing cables. Those who have had experience in fighting such fires know that they are extremely difficult to combat and extinguish owing to the irritating and noxious gases, fumes and vapors evolved from evaporation, distillation and combustion of the sundry compounds used in the construction of cables. When electric-motor-driven coal-cutting machines were first introduced in coal mines, the electricity was transmitted to the apparatus by two single-conductor trailing cables. Later, two-conductor parallel and concentric types were developed. These early cables were made with the materials available at that time with relatively little thought given to using new materials or utilizing the old to the best advantage. The copper conductors were stranded to give flexibility, but there were too few strands and the method of laying them was such that they did not endure well the stresses of twisting and pulling, to which trailing cables used in mines are usually subjected. The rubber insulating compounds used were not satisfactory in resisting water, high temperature, and the crushing stresses encountered in mine service. The outer coverings were cotton or jute braids saturated with tars or asphalts having relatively no abrasive resistance. In fact, the only consideration given to trailing cable design because of its extremely short life, was to construct it at the lowest possible cost. With increased electrification and mechanization, more serious problems were encountered. Cables used in mines were exposed to more severe conditions than in any other industry. The excessive overload currents, poor heat dissipation, severe abrasion, crushing loads from falling material, runovers, and any of the other things that tend to destroy cable, called for vast improvement in trailing cable design for mine use. About 1918, one manufacturer who recognized the need for improving the toughness of cables in order to obtain greater safety and longer life, developed a special rope-stranded conductor, a superior rubber insulation compound and a tough rubber sheath or jacket compound. As a result of this type of construction, broken conductor strands were practically eliminated, the insulating material withstood high temperature without undue disintegration, and the jacket, similar to that used for automobile tire tread, had high abrasion resistance, high tear resistance, and was waterproof. While the initial cost of these cables was higher than the jute-filled braided types, this disadvantage was more than offset by increased safety and longer service. Cables with these improved characteristics were first installed in mines in 1920. Since 1930, the use of braided trailing cables in coal mines has been almost completely supplanted by the more superior types, employing high-grade rubber compounds for insulation and sheath. A preceding paragraph treats of the irregular manner in which ore deposits occur and the complex factors that control their distribution; the occurrence of metals in oreshoots in individual deposits is equally irregular, and the factors that control such segregation are equally complex. While the dimen¬sions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combina¬tions who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low¬grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well ¬defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. The lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnecessary drilling.' While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a technique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. Economic equilibrium in petroleum refining is a dual concept. It embraces both the over-all balance between total storage and total demand for major products and the internal balance between the demands and inventories of the various products. The latter is the more complex of the two for it is concerned with proportionating the supplies of the several products stemming from the joint source to the demands for the individual products which are subject to wide variations. All the products are essentially nondurable goods, and they are used both by producers and consumers but in varying proportions. Motor fuel is very largely a consumer's good, while residual fuel oil is almost entirely a producer's good, the other products falling between these extremes. The peculiar-

WHEN F. Heusler1 found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.3 All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys" the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intelligently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. PREVIOUS WORK In the original work of F. Heusler1 and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for Cu2MnA1 of I = 443 was early measured. Ross and Grays found a second maximum at the composition Cu2MnSn, which was much more magnetic than Heusler's original alloy. F. Heusler6 then reinvestigated the system, confirmed their results,

The Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steams-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Clifis Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7½-hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼-hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7½-hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). when treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. During the last several years many papers have appeared dealing with the structure of highly polished metal surfaces. The awakening of interest in this subject is due to the applicability of the electron diffraction technique to the study of surfaces. The original theory of Beilbyl considered the surface of polished metals as of the nature of a supercooled liquid or a vitreous, amorphous solid. The electron diffraction effects from polished metals have been interpreted by rnany to be a direct experimental proof of the correctness of the Beilby theory. This interpretation has been strongly opposed by others, so that at the present time the subject is in an uncertain and controversial state. In the present paper new, and hitherto unpublished, electron diffraction effects from polished zinc are desrribed. These observations indicate that the polished surface of zinc is crystalline. Published Work Many papers2""10 have interpreted the electron diffraction evidence as proof of the Beilby amorphous theory. All investigators agree that highly polished metals give rise to two diffuse diffraction haloes, similar to those obtained by the diffraction of X-rays in liquids and vitreous solids. It is this similarity that leads to the amorphous-layer interpretation of polished metals. Strangely, the interatomic distances calculated from these haloes are very similar for the various metals investigated, in spite of a rather wide range of such distances in the crystalline and liquid states. The calculated atomic sizes are, furthermore, smaller than are experienced in the normal states of the metals. In spite of these anomalies, the amorphous-layer interpretation has been adhered to by many. One investigator, S. Dobinski," differs from the others in his experimental results. By polishing under benzene in order to avoid the possibility of oxidation, Dobinski obtains diffuse haloes of radii different from those previously obtained. He thus obtains a more rational quantitative correlation of the diffuse haloes with the amorphous-layer theory.

Extensive progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,l the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, L'slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to desecriptive names, have adopted the name of sprilzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. In the earlier paper mentioned, the author also emphasized the fact that the definition given for die castings indicated clearly that the satisfactory operation of the process must comprise three factors, all of which must be considered of vital importance to the successful operation of the die-casting process:

DURING the past three years the Surface Preparation Committee of the American Mining Congress Coal Operators' Committees has been collecting data on dewatering and drying washed coal, and on screening coal in representative plants in the Eastern and Central bituminous fields. Because of wide variations in bed moisture, such data can be compared only after deducting the bed moisture. It was found that practically every company used a different routine for moisture sampling and determinations. Some reported the moistures as total moistures, others as surface moistures, cur-dried moistures, or oven-dried moistures. For most of the reports it was necessary to esti-mate, from a consideration of the bed moisture and other data available in a given case, corrections to be made in order to obtain surface-moisture figures as a common basis for comparison. At any plant, and regardless of bed moisture, the percentage of surface moisture remaining in a product when the dewatering, or a given stage of the dewatering, has been completed, is the real measure of what has been accomplished. The descriptions and data given with Fig. 1 show that surface-moisture figures show relationships that would not be shown by total moistures. Therefore bed moisture should be deducted, or, if more practicable, the surface moisture of the. products should be meas-ured direct. A preparation engineer finds one per cent, or even a part of one per cent, of surface moisture a very important consideration in the results of his efforts to find the most effective and economical methods of reducing and controlling the surface moisture in his products within the required limits. Therefore it is important for him to have accurate measurements of surface moisture with minimum uncertainty as to whether they some-times include less than the surface moisture and at others all of the surface moisture plus an unknown part of the bed moisture.

ALTHOUGH the open-hearth charge contributes CO, C02, H2, A and water vapor to the combustion gases and absorbs oxygen from them, in the main the thermal effects in the melting charge and molten bath can be considered independently of those in fuel combustion; the latter then is regarded simply as the source of the net heat required to finish a heat of steel. First of all, it should be remembered that a large percentage of the heat supplied to the bath is furnished by oxidation of the various elements in the charge itself. If this charge consisted of 80 to 100 per cent of hot metal and the oxidation were accomplished by blowing in air or oxygen, as in the bessemer converter, the net heat absorption would be negative; that is, the bath would contribute part of the heat required to keep the melting chamber hot, in addition to that contained in the finished steel and slag. In actual open-hearth practices, probably the nearest approach to this is in the duplex furnace, charged with bessemer-blown metal and some hot metal, where very little heat is required to complete the refining and nearly all the heat energy from fuel combustion is used to keep the roof and walls of the melting chamber up to around 2900 to 3000 F (1600 to 1650 C), so that the bath will not cool off during the refining. The other extreme is with all-cold charges containing around 80 per cent steel scrap and 20 per cent cast iron or cold pig iron, in which case a very large proportion of the heat in the bath at tap is supplied from the fuel combustion. THERMAL EFFECTS IN MELTING In a typical heat, the fuel furnishes about four million British thermal units per ton of steel produced. The heat required, for the metallurgical processes is not easily defined in useful manner but it ranges downward from about one million Btu, depending not only on the charge but on the manner of calculation. The Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steams-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Clifis Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7½-hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼-hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7½-hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). when treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. THE remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a mis-understanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combus-tion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publica-tions have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

A MAJOR difficulty in the experimental study of precipitation-hardening is the measurement of particle sizes too small to be easily resolved with the microscope. It has been shown recently, however, that magnetic measurements on copper-cobalt al- loys in the aged state can be used to determine the average volume, total volume, volume distribution, and shape of the ferromagnetic cobalt-rich particles, even though the particles are submicroscopic in size. r' These alloys also are known to exhibit considerable precipitation hardening. This paper reports some results on the dependence of the mechanical properties of such an alloy on the particle size, determined magnetically. It further illustrates the use of other magnetic measurements in interpreting structure changes occurring during deformation.
