The Highlad underground uranium mine is located in the southern Powder River Basin, Converse County, Wyoming. Development by Exxon Minerals Company began in 1973 and average production from the complex roll- front deposit ranges from 500 to 600 stpd. A staff of six eight grade control technicians work within the Geology Department to guide and monitor production, to minimize waste and to account production to reserve estimates. A thorough knowledge of the complex roll- front deposit aids in accounting production to reserve estimates. Grade control technicians assist the mine geologist in making geologic cross sections, in estimating reserves, and in predicting monthly and quarterly production grades.

A series of organic collectors has been developed which successfully float synthetic secondary uranium minerals, such as autunite, carnotite, and torbernite. Recoveries up to 97 pct have been obtained. With cleaning of rougher concentrates, ratios of concentration as high as 15:l are possible on head assays of 0.10 to 0.50 pct U308. Additions of certain base metal salts aid in recovery and materially in- crease the rate of flotation and selectivity of the collectors for the synthetic minerals. Flotation tests on natural uranium minerals have not yet equaled results obtained on the synthetics, although these collectors do give better results than conventional collectors for nonsulfide minerals.

North Carolina is the leading state in the US in lithium mineral production. Spodumene is mined in open pits and concentrated by flotation by the two companies, Lithium Corp. of America and Foote Mineral Co. North Carolina State University has a mineral research laboratoy in Asheville, N. C., with trained personnel, batch and pilot plant facilities to assist in the state's mineral development. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory assisted both lithium-producing companies with spodumene concentration problems and has lately worked closely with Lithium Corp. of America to develop the best flowsheet for spodumene and byproduct recovery. The concentration of North Carolina spodumene and byproducts from pegmatites is presented and illustrated with figures.

Understanding of in situ rock mass behaviour has taken a step forward with the advent of the refined rock mass classifications of Wickham, Bieniawski and Barton et al. In this paper six case studies are given in brief showing how Barton's classification could be used in mining situations. The cases cover stability of roadway junctions under shallow covers, support pressure estimation in roadways in intact and failed rock conditions, determination of the safe unsupported span of a wide stope and estimating the stability of roadways in two contiguous seams standing 011 small pillars against puncture of the parting rock.

Essential features of the system include three main modules: production, reclamation, and impact analysis. Using an adsorption-column technique the partition of dodecylamine between quartz and water has been determined at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 4000 mg per liter. The adsorption varies as the square root of the concentration. Attachment of dodecylamine to quartz is reversible. The amount adsorbed in a flotation operation giving almost complete recovery is under 5 pct of the amount required for a monolayer.

THE Juniper Prospect is in Carleton County, N. B., at approximately 46º 31' north latitude, 67º 20' west longitude. During the summer of 1955 an area in west-central New Brunswick was selected for aerial electromagnetic prospecting with American Metal Co.'s helicopter-mounted equipment. Generalized, small-scale government geologic maps had suggested that this area was located along the western border of the northeast-trending granitic backbone of northwestern New Brunswick and might be underlain by the Ordovician-Silurian sediments and volcanics that are the host rocks for the recently discovered sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle district.

Expanding markets and technological investigations now in progress for commercial production of titanium metal and alloys, as well as expanding uses for the oxide, have resulted in greater production, increased prices, and accelerated search for additional commercial occurrences of titanium minerals. For more than 50 years rutile has been used in moderate quantities in ceramics, in the production of ferrotitanium, as well as nonferrous titanium alloys. During the early 1930's, use of pure titanium dioxide was introduced as an ingredient of coatings for electric welding rods. For technical and economic reasons rutile was soon found to be as good or better for mild steel welding rods, and this use continues to account for a good share of the rutile sales in the U. S.

THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known outcrops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. S. border. Steel mills are also located in the North, and finished products must travel 600 to 800 miles to the area of consumption in central Mexico. The beneficiation of a scheelite ore by flotation was investigated with emphasis on determining optimum conditions for obtaining maximum grade and recovery in the rougher concentrates. Variables such as pH, time, temperature, and pulp density during conditioning were plotted against the grade and recovery of the rougher concentrates. Several gangue regulators were tried, and several methods of cleaning rougher concentrates are described.
