EL Salvador mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., E subsidiary of Anaconda Co., is in northern Chile about 18 miles north of Potrerillos, 7825 ft above sea level. Initial production is planned for the first half of 1959. Plant capacity will be 30,000 tpd, and there are 308,835,000 tons of proven ore reserves, averaging 1.49 pct Cu. The Inca adit is being driven as part of the mine-to-mill haulageway. Because of the overburden it is planned to mine the deposit by block caving. Ore will be dropped from upper gathering levels through ore passes to the Inca adit, through which it will be transported out of the mine to the primary crushing plant located a half mile from the portal.

4.1-1. Introduction. Open pit mine planning must be correlated to all phases of a mining operation. The factors that must be considered in planning an open pit mine are numerous and must reflect the characteristics and surrounding conditions of a particular orebody. Therefore, only an outline of the subject can be presented here to aid the planning engineer in pointing out procedures that are generally applicable to pit design. The presentation is directed toward the planning of an open pit copper mine, but the procedures discussed should apply in most cases to any type of metallic or nonmetallic orebody. In planning an open pit mine the pertinent elements that must be included are: assays, geology, tonnage and areal extent of ore reserves, topography, mining equipment, economic factors of operating costs, capital expenditures, profit, types of ore, pit limits, cut-off grade, stripping ratio, rate of production, pit slopes, bench heights, road grades, ore metallurgical characteristics, hydrological conditions, property lines, and marketing considerations. 4.1-2. Sampling. Sampling must be adequate to classify the various materials to be removed from an open pit mine. Drillhole assays are plotted on sections and plan maps with ore and waste blocked out by selected bench intervals. These maps are prepared to depict the geological and other conditions existing on each mine level. The confidence factor to be applied to sampling and the resultant assays values must be given careful consideration. In uniformly disseminated de- posits, the confidence factor will approach unity. For widely fluctuating values, the average assay values should be discounted somewhat, the degree depending upon such factors as drillhole spacing. Such samples, at best, represent a very few pounds for hundreds to thousands of tons of ore

California's outstanding contribution to unit operation is the plan of development now established for the North dome of the Kettleman Hills. Beginning April 1, 1931, the Kettleman North Dome Assn. will control the unified operation and development of 10,800 acres of proven and semiproven oil land, and at the same time the Standard Oil CO. of California will operate as another unit its fee land of 9460 acres of similar character. The holdings of the two companies are in a checkerboard mile-square pattern. In addition to this, 410 acres of land may yet be included in the Kettleman North Dome Assn. unit and 530 acres of land are definitely out of both units. The owners of some of this land have expressed their intention of cooperating in a reasonable way with these two units. Cooperative agreements are now in force as to most of this field. Under the definitions of a unit pool and a near-unit pool,' the operation at Kettleman Hills will be a near-unit operation, but because of the size of the structure and its proven highly productive character, the arrangement. concluded on Jan. 31, 1931, in the approval of the Kettleman North Dome Assn. Agreement by Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur and by California State Oil and Gas Supervisor R. D. Bush is of outstanding importance to the entire oil industry. No other major unit operation plans are under way in California at the present time. There has been some little discussion of a plan in the North Belridge field and a feeling that the discovery of oil in the Lost Hills field and also in the South Belridge field would necessitate consideration of unit plans. So few data are available for these areas, as to the land that should be included in such unit plans, that little constructive action is now possible. The beginning of drilling on the Middle dome of the Kettleman Hills also makes it an area deserving consideration for unit operation. The continually growing shortage of skilled underground miners, the escalating costs of labor, supplies and equipment, and the indisputable example of "what can be done" by our friends in the space-travel field, seem to be catalysts that are accelerating improvements in underground mining technology. The search for an economic, automated continuous excavation method that would produce rock at the mining face in sizes suitable for automated transportation directly into the rod-, ball-, or autogenous grinding mills is continuing. New mining methods and techniques were devised and many improvements on old methods and techniques came forth at an increasing pace that reflected a widely spreading policy among mining men to shun the shackles of conservatism and to forge ahead and venture into newer ideas.

Since Bohler discovered, in 1903, on cooling certain alloy steels, the phenomenon of a new and lower temperature transformation than the usual Ar 3-2-1 obtained by increasing the maximum temperature to which the material was heated, much has been published1 connecting this phenomenon with a large number of dissimilar steels of high alloy content. From the fact that the transformation divides itself, taking place at two widely separated temperatures, it has been called a "split transformation." The significant facts established by recent investigators2 are: that when the transformation occurs at the higher temperature Ar1, troostite or a decomposition product is formed, and that when the transformation occurs at the lower temperature Ar", the resulting structure is martensite. The terminology Ar' and Ar" adopted here is that of Portevin. Previous Investigations Reviewing the work on this subject published in a recent issue of Revue de Metallurgie and referring in particular to his statement that martensite is a solution of carbide in alpha iron, Le Chatelier says :4 "How then can a theory already 20 years old demand new investigations? The reason for it is that we have not succeeded in proving directly the real presence of the transformation of iron during the very short duration of the quenching. During the course of some magnetic investigations which the authors have under way, six bars of 0.43-carbon steel were tested, a permeameter designed after the Hopkinson yoke type being used. The results obtained were of some interest and although far from complete serve at least to show the necessity for a careful investigation of the previous history of the samples under study as well as the chemical composition. A steel of given chemical composition may assume a great variety of structures, depending on its treatment. Professor Sauveur has devised a very clear and effective means of illustrating this point. The accompanying microphotographs show some of the possible structures assumed by a 0.30 carbon steel (Fig. 1). It is now a well-established fact that a structural change is accompanied by changes in the tensile strength, elastic limit, hardness, etc., and it seems reasonable to assume also, a change in the magnetic properties. Six bars of a 0.43-carbon steel were used, all the bars being taken from the same rod and treated as follows: Bar 1. Heated to 1,100° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 2. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 3. Heated to 900° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 4. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in air. Bar 5. Heated to 900° and cooled in air. Bar 6. Untreated. The bars were then turned to 13 mm. diameter and tested by the Hopkinson yoke method. After testing, three specimens were taken from each bar, one from each end and one from the middle. The homogeneity of the bars was tested in this manner and in no instance could any difference in structure in the three specimens1 be detected. Bars 1 to 3 inclusive are pearlitic in structure. A method is presented for predicting the character of gas or water displacement in a radial system, which can be either horizontal or inclined. The latter case would comprise cone-shaped or dome-shaped symmetry. The method conriders the one dimension of radial distance, taken parallel to the bedding planes. Approximate allowance can be made for segregation of the two fluids perpendicular to the bedding planes. A complete saturation history can be obtained in about a day's time with the use of a desk calculator. Results of an example calculation agree well with the performance of simulated gas drive in a large model representing a section of a cone. This pie-shaped, sand-packed model was 8-ft long and 4-in. thick. The method of solution is useful in handling other partial differential equations of first order and first degree. INTRODUCTION A new analytical method has been developed for predicting the performance of gas or water drive in a reservoir having radial or cone-shaped symmetry (see Fig. 1). In addition, this new development offers a general method of handling partial differential equations of first order and first degree. This work extends those methods developed previously'- "or predicting the displacement of oil by gas or water in linear systems. The method of calculating oil recovery in a radial system involves two major parts. The first part is a calculation of the distribution of saturations at various times of depletion. The second part is the calculation of oil recovery and producing gas-oil or water-oil ratios through volumetric balance on the saturation distributions obtained in the first part. This second part differs only slightly in principle from similar calculations made with linear systems, for instance. The basic assumptions used in the calculations are as follows. 1. One-dimensional radial flow. An approach is explained later for approximating a second vertical dimension. (With- drawals of oil, and of the driving fluid after breakthrough, are assumed uniform around the periphery of the dome.) 2. Constant-volume fluid flow. Thus, in a gas drive there is no change in gas solubility, or in oil or gas volume due to viscous and gravity pressure drops. 3. Capillary forces are negligible. 4. Constant rate of injection. A program has been written for carrying out the calculations needed on a digital computer. However, a prediction can also be arrived at using a desk calculator; this latter method of work requires about a day's time for each prediction made. CALCULATION OF SATURATION DISTRIBUTION For definiteness, we describe the development of our method for the case of gas drive from the crest of the structure. As director of the Division of Metallurgy of the Technical Section of the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, from August, 1917, to January, 1919, I devoted much time to the study of the steels best suited to the construction of aircraft. It became apparent at a very early stage of my investigation that the practice of builders varied greatly in regard to the number of different steels to be used, to the kinds of steels, and to their treatment. Some manufacturers employed as many as fifteen steels while the builder of one of the newest motors, favorably passed upon in the United States, assured me that two or, at the most, three kinds of steel was all he needed to produce satisfactory results. In the matter of treatment, the manufacturers were also greatly at variance.. Some treated their steel with considerable refinement, while others paid but scant attention to this feature. Some manufacturers case-hardened many parts, while others used the case-hardening process sparingly, if at all. Nickel-chromium steels were used at some works for case-hardening while at other plants this treatment was applied exclusively to carbon steels. Air-hardening nickel-chromium steel was used extensively by some and not at all by others. Considerable variance existed likewise in regard to the steels used for admission and exhaust valves. The conclusion was obvious, that no two manufacturers of airplane motors held like opinions as to the steels to be used or as to the treatment they should receive. Was it to be inferred from this that the many committees and associations that had been created, in part at least, for the standardization of aircraft steels had failed to make proper recommendations or that the manufacturers had ignored their recommendations? Confining our inquiry to the committees and associations that had dealt with this question in England, France, and the United States, it was found that in Great Britain the British Engineering Standards Committee, now the British Engineering Standards Association, had devoted much time to the problem of satisfactory standards for aircraft steels. The first sintering of zinc ores was done at the Bartlesville plant of the National Zinc Co., under the auspices of the late Otto Rissman. Mr. Rissman, who had had a long experience in the treatment of zinc ores, well realized all the difficulties of satisfactorily roasting zinc concentrates, which were becoming finer and dustier as each year went by—thus increasing the difficulties of roasting them in the existing forms of roasters, which were furnaces of the Ropp, Hegeler or similar types. Mr. Rissman's idea of the advantages of sinter was expressed in this way: in a zinc ore dead-roasted in a mechanical furnace there are many particles that are just like an egg; that is, they have a hard and impervious film of fused material on the outside, and in the retorting this completely cuts off access of the reducing gases to the center of the egg until a temperature has been reached at which this shell of the egg can be broken down through fusion. A particle of sintered zinc sulphide, on the contrary, is exactly like a piece of sponge. The moment the retort reaches the temperature at which the reactions can take place, they begin, because the reducing gases have ready access to the interior of the particles by means of the pores of the '" sponge." His faith in the advantages of sinter was amply borne out by the results obtained at the pioneer sintering plant for zinc ores installed by the National Zinc Company. Early Method of Sintering The method of procedure at Bartlesville was to roast the zinc concentrates down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 per cent residual sulphide sulphur; to cool these, then to wet them down to the proper moisture and mix them in the mixer of the sintering plant; then to sinter them by means of the heat available from the residual sulphides. The sulphur contents of the roast varied considerably, of course, as it was difficult with the furnaces in use to control the roasting exactly at any point short of dead roast. Hence at times the concentrates were roasted a little too low to sinter readily, and at such times the lack of sulphur was made up by the addition of raw concentrates to the sintering-machine charge in suitable amount.

The technologist who has devoted much attention to the foundry-business will perhaps have noticed that the present scientific development of foundry-practice is in a condition similar to that of the steel-business some twenty years ago. In many cases chemistry is looked upon with suspicion, and the old cutand-try-methods are still in vogue, especially in the smaller foundries. The larger works have laboratories and more extensive means for applying science, and have devoted considerable time and attention to the improvement of foundry-practice. This is more especially true in the East, although in the West there are numerous firms devoting considerable attention to improving their metllods through the application of chemistry to work in the iron-foundry. It is hardly necessary to dwell extensively upon the effects of the different metalloids associated with iron, in pig- or castiron, in the way they are given in most text-books. The writer has thought proper to consider more particularly new developments in eupola-practice, particularly those pertinent to the discussion of the physics of cast-iron. In this connection some new ideas which recent practice has developed will be mentioned, and some results of practical tests along the same line will be described. Yet it has been deemed advisable also, by way of introduction, to outline the effects of the metalloids as they are described in most text-books, without going into detail. The question is sometimes asked, What is the most important element governing the quality of cast-iron 'for any particular purpose ? The spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° 17' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1—the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous mica-chlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, litho-margic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. Method of Survey and Apparatus Employed The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area. INTRODUCTION Fifteen years ago a distinguished electrochemist referred to electrochemistry as an "underdeveloped science " In the article in question, Professor Bockris (1) stated that many areas of.natura1 phenomena and applied technology are not perceived as being electrochemically based At that time, this was especially true for much of non-ferrous extractive metallurgy and was a particularly accurate description of hydrometallurgy During the last decade, there has been considerable advancement in applying the theory of electrochemistry to our know1 edge of hydrometallurgical processes and in understanding the mechanisms of underlying electrode reactions. Impressive as these advances are, there is still a growing need for electrochemical research of mineral systems and electrochemical engineering to apply this work in practical situations In a broad sense electrochemistry is defined as the physical chemistry of ions in solution and of phenomena which occur at the electrified interface. Bockris and Reddy (2) refer to electrochemistry as being divided into two fundamental domains, ionics and electrodics ionics is restricted to the behavior of ions in solutions, examples being many familiar redox processes Electrodics represents the main part of electrochemistry, and is the study of charged interfaces and the conditions governing charge transfer reactions across them. The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroel and Richards12 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,' and Hayden8 (to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions) and by Schu1z,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867)) reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's metheds, may arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

DESPITE the fact that centrifugal fans were first developed for ventilating mines and that artificial ventilation was first practiced in mines, the lack of knowledge of mining men on mine ventilation in general, and on fan performances and characteristics in particular, is very much in evidence today. While it is true that mines are much better ventilated now than they were 20 to 30 years ago, we have made very little progress in the study of mine ventilation, or in mine ventilating fan design. Today the average mine operator is woefully dependent on the engineers of mine fan manufacturers when he is in the market for a fan, and this situation works to the disadvantage of both the operator and the manufacturer. The former may be imposed upon by an unscrupulous sales engineer and induced to buy a fan which is not the proper one for the mine; when it is operating it may be wasteful of power and even accessory to a serious mine disaster. More often, however, it is the fan manufacturer who is imposed on. If the operator asks the manufacturer to build for him a fan that will deliver a certain quantity of air against a certain specified pressure and requiring a specified number of horse power when operating under these conditions, the manufacturer may build a fan that will comply with these specifications to the letter. When the fan is installed it is frequently found that it is delivering a greater quantity of air against a lesser pressure or a lesser quantity of air against a greater pressure, and is requiring more horse power than specified in the first case and less than that specified in the second. In either case the operator usually upbraids the manufacturer for not meeting specifications, and refuses to pay for the fan. The trouble in either case outlined above is that the pressure necessary to force the specified quantity of air through the mine has been estimated incorrectly by the operator or his engineers. When a fan is designed and built to deliver a certain quantity of air against a certain specified resistance it will operate at its maximum efficiency only when it is operating under

In a previous paper1 a method for the measurement of the comparative desulphurizing power of slags was described and data were presented covering the range of likely slags containing up to 10 per cent MgO. In the present work the range is extended to include slags containing up to 20 per cent MgO, and the effect of temperature on 5 per cent and 15 per cent MgO slags over the range 1475' to 1525' C. is included. The method used was that described in the previous paper except that some of the temperature measurements were made with a noble-metal thermocouple instead of a tungsten-graphite thermocouple. Twelve-gram charges of 0.8 per cent sulphur-metal and 5-gram charges of slag were subjected to heating for 30 min. at a prescribed temperature. The charges were analyzed for sulphur content. For purposes of comparison, desulphurizing power is defined as the ratio of the percentage of sulphur found in the slag to that found in the metal. Six slag and metal charges were made coincidentally in 5/8in. holes in a section of an electrode graphite rod. One slag and metal charge was used as a control by means of which adjustment in the desulphurization value could be made for small variations in temperature and other factors. For convenient presentation of the data, the slags are arranged in groups in each of which one of the four main slag components is constant. Thus, the 15 per cent MgO slags are presented separately from those containing 20 per cent MgO. Slags with Magnesium Oxide Constant 15 Per cent Mg0.—The data on slags containing 15 per cent MgO cover a composition range of 24 to 50 per cent SiO2, 5 to 27 per cent A1203 and 24 to 53 per cent CaO. Variation in composition has been in steps of 2 per cent over much of the area. An article on the subject of electrolytic zinc no longer needs to be preceded by an apology. The production of zinc by electrolysis is past the laboratory stage and has become an economic factor of considerable importance in the total production of zinc in the United States. The various methods of procedure to be followed fa the greatest economy of manufacture are fairly well known, consequently a detailed description of any method is no longer necessary or desirable. In this paper I shall endeavor to lay down some of the governing conditions in this industry, the relation of methods to ore deposits, freight rates, and sources of power supply. Power Points Assuming for a moment that, for the present at least, the electrolytic production of zinc will be confined to Those localities having developed water power, a glance at these powers so developed in the United States, with their relation to known zinc orebodies of economic size, will not be without interest. Northwest In the Northwest we have water powers, developed and undeveloped, . in Washington and Montana. These must, of course, bear a close relation to the rapidly growing zinc production of the Coeur d'Alenes and of the Butte districts. In general, the power of the territory in question is relatively low-priced, at least as compared with the cost of developing power from coal, and the near neighborhood of large bodies of more or less complex zinc ores makes these water powers of more than usual interest. The same remarks may be applied equally to the developed water powers of the Canadian side of the line in the Northwest, where we have again commercially available complex ore deposits such as are being exploited today at and near Trail. Since most modern metallurgical plants are operated continuously and on a large scale, successful operation at maximum efficiency demands that an accurate knowledge of the performance at each stage of the process be available at all times. Quantitative analyses provide the most practical process guides, and it is essential to have analytical procedures that combine accuracy and speed. In continuous plant operations, large losses may occur if the time interval between the development of trouble at any stage and its recognition and correction is great. Many metallurgical plants are using rapid colorimetric and spectrochemical methods of analyses for control purposes. So-called "color coppers" may be cited as an example of the colorimetric methods, in contrast with- the routine use of the ultraviolet spectrograph for the analysis of steels.42 By means of this more refined spectrochemical procedure, a complete quantitative analysis of the molten metal is obtained every few minutes. During the past two years the Physics Division and the Ore Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Company's Stamford Research Laboratories have collaborated in a study of the use of spectrochemical methods for the analysis of various metallurgical products. New methods have been developed, which have proved of practical value in plant operation. The following pages give a general review of the principles of spectrochemical methods and also the details of several specific analyses. Principles of Spectrochemical Analysis In general, it can be said that a visible light spectrochemical analysis can be performed for any ion or molecule that is naturally colored, or that can be made to react with another to produce a colored salt or complex. Whereas transmission measurements in the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the spectrum are most useful for the analysis of organic molecules, * visible light measurements are of particular value for metal salts. Such elements as copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel, iron, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, phosphorus, mercury, zinc, lead, and a great many others, can now be determined with a high degree of sensitivity, accuracy and dispatch. From the simplest of qualitative determinations, color analyses have been improved to such an extent that, at the present time, through the use of recording spectrophotometers, hundreds of accurate quantitative analyses can be performed by a single analyst during an 8-hr. day after the standardization curves have been established for the ions to be determined.

Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract, including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors.2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.³ The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but the product is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. OPEN-HEARTH refractories are not merely an accessory to the furnace. They are the furnace, to all intents and purposes. The steel work of the main structure is merely an open frame which helps to support the refractories; and the regenerators, a necessary part of the furnace system, consist almost entirely of refractories. Not only do refractories constitute the essential part of the furnace, but they also carry the liquid steel all the way 'to the point where it begins to solidify. On leaving the furnace the liquid passes through a refractory runner into a refractory-lined ladle, then through a refractory nozzle closed by a refractory stopper on the end of a rod protected by refractory sleeve bricks. The liquid is sometimes sent through an additional refractory- lined tundish, a supplementary ladle, or a refractory runner for bottom pouring, until it finally enters the iron mold in which it solidifies. Even in the mold, refractory materials are sometimes used to provide a nonconducting "hot top." This series, from runner and ladle to hot top, inclusive, is often referred to collectively as the "pouring-pit refractories." REFRACTORY RAW MATERIALS The raw materials available are best classified into basic and acid types. The principal basic raw materials are magnesite, dolomite, and chrome ore. The principal acid materials are silica in various natural forms, and fireclay. Magnesite. Austria was the principal source of magnesite (MgC03) until recent years, when the Province of Quebec, in Canada, and the states of Nevada and Washington became important sources for the American steel industry. More recently these natural sources have been supplemented by the so-called "sea-water magnesite"-which is the name somewhat incorrectly given to magnesium hydroxide obtained as one of the products

A NOTABLE amount of fossil resin exists in many of the bituminous coal beds of Utah. The upper part of these show a marked concentration of resin, which occurs primarily in the fracture seams. In general, these seams are less than 1/8 in. thick, but it is not uncommon to find coal with areas as thick as 3/8inches. The resin is of the hard kauri variety, with coloration varying from deep blood red to lemon yellow and almost colorless. There is also an almost black variety, which is not readily soluble in the same solvents as the lighter colored resins. These resins are valuable for many industrial purposes. When refined, they are suitable for uses similar to those for which lac resins are usually employed. They are particularly desirable for preparing dielectric varnishes. They are also desirable in preparing printing inks, waterproofing agents, special synthetic rubbers and rubber cements. They are especially suitable as an admixture in synthetic rubbers and cements, as they supply the essential tackiness the synthetics lack. Completely soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Insoluble in alcohols, ethyl acetate and other commonly used alcohols and esters. Compatible with natural and synthetic rubbers, chlorinated and cyclized rubbers, waxes, vegetable oils, mineral oils, rosin, ester gum, phenolic and modified phenolic resins and other natural and synthetic resins of like solvent solubility. The recovery and refining of these fossil resins has been the subject of much research work and has intrigued many investigators. Broadly speaking, the problem involves separation of the resin from the coal into a very high-grade concentrate, and subsequent treatment of this concentrate to produce an acceptable refined resin for its various usages. Obviously it is also desirable to recover the residual coal without excessive size degradation. The late W. D. Green, concentration engineer for Combined Metals Reduction Co., obtained U. S.
